1/7/17 Turf Paradise Pick Five - Preview
It's a big day of racing at Santa Anita Saturday, with three Graded Stakes. Unfortunately, the rains have made a mess of the track, making playing the card in Arcadia unappealing (at least, to me). So for that reason we're going to shift our Saturday action to the east; but not too far east, as we take a run at The Pick Five at Turf Paradise.
RACE 4 - Clm $4k - Five Furlongs Dirt

Cozy Bar will be going for his third win in a row; and while he's in top form, it's fair to question how Cozy Bar will handle the stretchout combined with the move up in class. Inexcess Time has disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of his last three races, and his form seems to be declining as he makes his way down the class ladder in search of victory. Still, Inexcess Time cannot be totally dismissed, as a return to the form that he showed in the Fall would make him a top contender here.

So we come to the second day of 2017, a holiday in the US courtesy of the first of the year having fallen on a Sunday. As such, there's a holiday card for us to enjoy at Santa Anita. And while the exact condition of the track as I type this is unknown, a check of the overnight weather and current conditions tell me that the track should be in much better shape than it was the first two days of this weekend. Arrogate was scheduled to run Sunday in the Grade 2 San Pasqual at Santa Anita, but his connections did not like the condition of the main track; and to be quite honest, neither did I. As you can tell, I think this contest is pretty wide open, and would not blame anybody for choosing to punch the "ALL" button for this leg.
Sexy Code took the Place at this class level last time out, a length in front of the Post Time Favorite in that contest, Azure Dream. Sundar Creek is a solid contender here if she can carry her dirt form over onto the fake stuff.
Heart's Melody missed victory by less than a length last time out against more expensive stock. Call My Bluff tries winners for the first time after pacing herself last time out instead of trying to run on the lead.

Esperanza's Mobile took the Show at this class level last time out. The concern is that "last time out" was over a year ago; but if Esperanza's Mobile is ready to go, then she could get her picture taken today.
Pray Anyway took the Place at this class level last time out, and will try to smoke the grass and steal this one on the front end. Tricked Again, Better in Leather, and Padawon were all within a length and a quarter of the winner at the wire at this class level last time out (albeit on a contest that had been taken off the grass); though Padawon did have to settle for a lower placing due to a DQ.
Deep Thought returns to the grass, which seems to be her preferred surface. Gold Finga will be trying grass for the first time; Trainer Frank Lucarelli has had some success with such.
