12/15/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

When a jockey of the caliber of Mike Smith (and, trust me, there are extremely few jockeys of the caliber of Mike Smith) comes to the track to ride just one mount, and that mount is a first time starter, you have to figure that mount is live.  And while I did have that mount (Ahimsa) on the big ticket, not fully appreciating just how well regarded she was by her connections was a pretty big mistake on my part.  Sadly, that was just one of many mistakes that I made with Friday's play.  So let's just say that, based upon the results, I needed one over the track, and that I should improve next time out.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  1 / 2 / 4 / 1  were rewarded with a payout of $2,120.30 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

12/15/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

Last weekend it was Golden Gate that wrapped up their Fall season; now this weekend it's Los Alamitos' turn, as they enter the home stretch of their Fall Meeting.  So with these being the final days for California Thoroughbred racing until after Christmas, I thought it would be a good idea to squeeze another day of fun from the proceedings; which is why Friday I'll be taking another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 5 - (F) Alw 12500s - Eight Furlongs Dirt

Note for future reference that, unlike many Starter Allowances run in California, this event has no lifetime Win restrictions for entry; but it does have a class/recency Win restriction.  So in addition to the requirement that the filly or mare seeking to be entered must have started for a claiming price of $12.5k or less, either this year or last, she must ALSO have not won a claiming, starter, or optional claiming race exceeding that $12.5k price tag in the time period after competing in that $12.5k claiming contest.

So the two questions to answer if you wanted to run your filly or mare here are:

1)  Did she run for a claiming price of $12.5k or less in 2016 or 2017?  If "Yes", then proceed to:

2)  Has she won since, in a race where she was entered for more than that $12.5k tag?  If "No", then you're good to go.

So in this field, # 3 Exactamente (ML 3-1), # 4 Backintheacademy (ML 4-1), # 5 Jill Madden (ML 6-1), and # 6 Sheswildnfree (ML 6-1) all ran for a $12.5k or less claiming price last time out.  Since that was their most recent race, they obviously have not won since that race, heading into Friday.

# 1 Tizway That Way (ML 5-2) won while competing with a $5k price tag on her head two starts back, at Arlington Park.  Since Tizway That Way failed to win the next time out, the only race between the running for the $5k claiming price and today, then she's good to go here.  # 7 Ryder's Starlight (ML 4-1) ran for a claiming price of $12.5k back on September 16, 2016; and while Ryder's Starlight has visited the Winner's Circle twice since that contest, both of those Wins came when she was competing in a $12.5k Starter Allowance (much like Friday's event).

Which leaves # 2 Fly Far Away (ML 15-1); which is somewhat problematic.  See, Fly Far Away ran for a claiming price of $12.5k back on September 27, 2015, and she hasn't won since.  But September 27, 2015 wasn't in either 2016 nor 2017; at least, not on my calendar.  So how did Fly Far Away sneak into Friday's contest?

Well, while I can't know for sure, I think the answer lies in Race 3 at Emerald Downs on August 15, 2016; a contest in which Fly Far Away took the Place.  That race was a $15k Waiver Claiming contest; but runners could get a three pound weight allowance by entering the gate with a $12.5k price tag on their head.  Now, according to the Equibase chart of the race, Flay Far Away did not run for the $12.5k price tag; indeed, Fly Far Away didn't run for any price tag because, having been inactive for nearly eleven months at that point (and thus making her 2016 debut), she was eligible to compete without threat of being claimed (hence the "Waiver" in the Waiver Claiming title above).

So the Los Alamitos stewards either choose to look the other way at that one, deciding that having a $12.5k claiming price in the conditions for that race was close enough; or the connections of Fly Far Away simply slipped one past them, as those in the racing office who are supposed to check such things just had something else to do.  Anyway, whatever the reason, Fly Far Away will be running in this contest Friday.  At least, as I type this.  EDIT: Fly Far Away has now been scratched.

Okay; enough with the conditions.  Backintheacademy and Jill Madden were each convincing winners in their respective contests last time out.  Tizway That Way and Ryder's Starlight both fit well here with the contenders as far as talent goes; but neither Tizway That Way nor Ryder's Starlight have done well in the past when competing over a Fast dirt track.

Pat the Bear took the Place against more expensive two starts back.  Quantum Force could romp here if he could return to the form that he showed two starts back in his debut.  But that contest was back on Independence Day, 2015; and if Quantum Force's connections thought that he could return to that form, they wouldn't be running him here for $6.25k.

Johns Journey won by daylight against classier foes back in July.  Warren's Cole may be the one running best late.  My Secret Affair is getting some significant class relief here; but My Secret Affair may need this race to get back into shape off the layoff, as she faded badly in her return last time out.

Plane Lucky looks to be the speed of the speed here; perhaps Plane Lucky can last 'til the wire today.  Dreamy Gal had a rough go of it last time out; perhaps she improves with a cleaner trip today.

Be a Lady goes first off the claim for Trainer Mark Glatt, who tends to do well with such.  Tuscany Beauty could benefit from the cutback in distance.  The "C" Selections are everyone else, as there's no notable standout in this field, and three of the four runners on the big ticket failed as the Post Time Favorite in their most recent contests.

These are juveniles, with only three experienced runners in the field: Star Dreamin, D D's Lute, and Jazzy.  None of the three has ever left the gate as the Post Time Favorite; indeed, of the three, D D's Lute is the only one to have gone to the post at single digit odds.  In addition, none of the three has ever finished in the Trifecta.  For that matter, D D's Lute is the only one of the three to have been as good as third at the stretch call.

But these are juveniles; so there's no telling who's grown up since the last time that they competed.  There are also several first time starters whose breeding suggests that will run well at first asking.  So I'm just going to take the easy way out in this leg and punch the "ALL" button on the big ticket and hope that I catch a price.

Sunday marks the end of the Fall meet at Golden Gate, meaning everything must go; and a big part of everything that is going is the carryover pool in the Jackpot Golden Pick six.  Well, maybe not that big a part, as the pool going into Sunday is just $3,861; but that's what'll happen when your pool gets scooped the Friday before your closing Sunday.  So with that as backdrop let's get to it, as I take another run at The Golden Pick Six at The Bay's Best Bet.

RACE 5 - Alw 12500s - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

Broken Up, a winner with a $40k price tag on his head last time out, has run well in the past over this turf course, and should have enough pace to chase in this contest.  Dixie Pistol looks to be quickest here, and he could take this field all the way.

Monsajem Accrete, ambitiously placed last time out, should appreciate the class relief.  Taelyns Prince could be running well late; but the rail draw means Taelyns Prince may have to fight through traffic to get to the line first.

This contest is restricted to fillies and mares four years old and upward which have never won two races OR fillies which are three years old.  So if your distaff runner is four years old or older, then she must have fewer than two wins in her career.  However, if your filly is three years old, then she can have as many wins as she pleases, and still be eligible to run here.  Note that there are no qualifiers for the win totals (that is, no exceptions for maiden victories, or wins where the purse was less than a certain dollar amount).

She Sang, a three year old filly with four career victories in thirteen tries heading into Sunday. won by daylight under these conditions last time out.  Our Favorite City, a three time winner in ten attempts, has failed as the Post Time Favorite in two of her last three starts; but Our Favorite City could be quickest early.  Our Renee, a three year old with just one lifetime Win, is racing above her conditions here.  Our Renee is talented enough where she could get her picture taken today; but she does not appear to have been well severed by being entered in this contest.

RACE 7 - (F) Miss America $50k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

Lady Valeur (Ire) disappointed as the Post Time Favorite last time out, crossing under the wire a little more than three lengths behind Dreamarcher; but that was a contest moved off the turf.  With Sunday's race being run on some California grass, Lady Veleur should regain her edge.

Kathy's Song ships in from downstate, and seems well meant here.  Central Heat has run well in the past over this turf course.  Coachwhip may be outclassed here; but seeing how Coachwhip had little trouble finding the Winner's Circle in each of his two prior career races, perhaps Coachwhip is something special.

RACE 8 - ALW N1X - Six Furlongs Synthetic

Sweet River Baines is the new shooter here, moving up in class after winning last time out with relative ease.  Most of the rest of this field is the N1X Allowance class in this circuit that seems to just take turns finishing in front of each other.  It's difficult to pick one from that group without using them all, as they are all pretty much evenly matched, as evidenced by their blanket finish in trying to grab the minor placings last time out.  I landed on Brownie Finale as a "B" Selection because I like the angle of using a runner that won the duel but lost the race last time out; but, really, if you have the budget, just use them all.

Well Caught ships in from downstate and gets some much needed class relief.  Sparkly Shine could be the one running best late.  Brookes All Mine took the Show against classier foes two starts back.

Note for future reference that this one is for horses which have not won two races in their career; but with one exemption, as runners get a pass by having one (and just one) win not considered, if one of their two career wins was for $16k or less.  For the record, # 1 Country Road (ML 9-2) and # 9 One Son of a Chief (ML 10-1) are the only two runners in this field to have visited the winner's circle more than once.

Out At Eight and Twice as Fast filled out the bottom two slots in the Trifecta at this class level last time out.  Country Road was much improved last time out with the cutback in distance; perhaps he can do it again.

Royal Opera House (Ire) could be well placed early with the addition of blinkers.  Hello Bourbon, despite having never crossed under the wire first in his career, seems to fit well with the contenders here.  The "C" Selections are everyone else because in my opinion this one looks to be very wide open.

Macalla had finished behind both # 10 Pequena Maty (6.60) and # 7 Exciting Dixie (31.10) last time out, so there was little reason to expect her to finish in front of those two today.  And she didn't; well, she did finish in front of Exciting Dixie; but Pequena Maty was comfortably ahead of her at the Finish Line.  But because Pequena Maty had interfered with  # 3 Lady Chrome (33.60) in the stretch,  which in turn created a chain reaction involving several runners, including Exciting Dixie, it was Macalla's number that got put up as the winner of Race 9.

Not that any of that really mattered to my play; as my only chance to collect Saturday was to have # 6 Chocolate Goddess (9.00) win Race 9.  So once Chocolate Goddess faded in the stretch after having led the field through the opening half mile, my last remaining ticket turned into trash.

Oh well; onto the next race.

12/9/17 Golden Gate Fields Late Pick Four - Preview

I'm sure by now nearly all of you are aware of the devastation caused by the Lilac fire, which consumed the San Luis Rey Downs Training Center this past Thursday.  Allow me please to express my deepest sympathies to all those who have suffered loss from this tragic event.  I pray that all who are now mourning will be comforted, that all who have been injured will be healed, and that all those that have perished will forever be remembered fondly.

Dis Smart Cat and Cuddle Alert are both trying the synthetic surface for the first time; but despite the change in footing, these two shippers from downstate seem well meant here.  Spring Heat and Fast and Foxy can be expected to be prominent early; and while it's expected that they will wear each other down prior to the wire, it's possible that one breaks free from the other and has things all her own way right to the Winner's Circle.

RACE 8 - Clm $32k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

Saxon Lord and Unusually Green are a pair of class droppers exiting the same contest; they both seem to be evenly matched, and either could prevail simply by replicating their most recent turf performance.  Anythingscookin has found the Winner's Circle often enough against classier foes this year that I think that Morning Line of 10-1 is a mirage; but you never know.

Belisarius (Ire) looks like the one that will be running best late.  Freedom Hill may be outclassed here; but Freedom Hill has enough tactical speed that he can't be easily tossed.  Hay Dude (GB) showed an affinity for this turf course last time out; perhaps he can repeat.

Chocolate Goddess goes first off the claim for Trainer Aggie Ordonez, and looks capable enough to handle the step up in class. Pequena Maty took the Place at this class level last time out, with Exciting Dixie grabbing the Show behind her.  Missionelle has finished in the Trifecta in each of her last two races, both at this class level.

Vronilla Parfait has been showing steady improvement since beginning her 2017 campaign.  Bella Luma returns from a nine month vacation; and while Bella Luma is classy enough to win at this level, it's fair to presume that this contest is to just prep her for her next start.  Propeppy could be the one running best late.

So as long as a runner has fewer than four career Wins, he's eligible to run in this race.  If a horse has four career Wins or more, then none of those Wins could have come since the end of August (note that Claiming and Starter Races for $3.5k or less don't count when computing the Win totals).  For the record, # 3 Silver Jester (ML 12-1), # 8 Burger and Fries (Fr) (ML 10-1), and # 10 Union Legend (ML 15-1) are the three runners in this field with fewer than four career Wins.

Sizzlin' Joe could move up with the drop in class.  Zorrito took the Place at this class level last time out, with Lucky Shoes to Win grabbing the Show behind him.  Abbey Vale (Ire) could improve with the change in surface.

Silver Jester could steal this one on the front end.  Union Legend could contend if he can rate early.
