Race 11 - # 3 Facts Matter (3.50) - "B" Selection
Gregorian Chant (GB), winner of the second leg of the sequence, is an entrant that would usually have find his way onto my main ticket, by virtue of having taken the Show at Saturday's class level his last time out.
However, Gregorian Chant had finished behind # 2 Maestro Dearte (9.10) in each of Gregorian Chant's last two starts, as well as finishing behind # 4 Order and Law (11.40) in his most recent start prior to Saturday. But the betting public was able to discern what I did not, which was that of that trio Gregorian Chant would be the one to run best; and Saturday became another day for me to contribute instead of collect.
Oh well; onto the next race.
Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of 1 / 1 / 5 / 3 were rewarded with a payout of $158.75 for their fifty cent wager. May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

The Grade 2 Pat O'Brien, a seven furlong contest for runners three years old and up, is Saturday's featured race in Southern California. I'll be taking a look at that contest below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

But misses are misses, regardless of their level of reasonableness; and their presence in my play made Saturday a day for me to contribute instead of collect.

Warren's Showtime took the Show behind Laura's Light last time out in the Grade 2 San Clemente; and while Warren's Showtime also finished behind Guitty (Fr) in that contest, I think Warren's Showtime stands the better chance of moving up with the added distance. The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

Anyway, a strong case could be made that Maximum Security should be the top selection here. Indeed, a strong case could be made that Maximum Security should be a big ticket single here. And later this evening, I may find myself wishing that I had made that case.
I certainly think that the added distance today will help Maximum Security increase his advantage over Midcourt, who was just a nose behind Maximum Security at the wire in the Grade 2 San Diego last time out. But I also think that Higher Power, Show finisher in the aforementioned San Diego, and winner of last year's running of this event, could very much benefit from the stretch out to ten furlongs; so much so that I like Higher Power's chances of winning today more than I like Maximum Security.
So that's how I'm playing this leg of the sequence; two deep on the big ticket, Higher Power over Maximum Security; with all others being used as backup "C" Selections.

8/15/20 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Results
Race 8 - # 5 Forest Caraway (Final Odds 11.90) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - The Solana Beach - # 5 Pulpit Rider (11.40) - "C" Selection
Race 10 - # 6 Pyron (0.60*) - "A" Selection
Race 11 - # 6 Mithqaal (8.00) - "B" Selection
Leaving Solana Beach winner Pulpit Rider off the main ticket was an undeniable error. Pulpit Rider was coming off a strong third place finish against open company over this turf course; additionally, Pulpit Rider was going third off the layoff for Trainer Mike Puype, who tends to do well with such. But looking objectively at the first leg of the sequence, I don't see how I can get Forest Caraway onto the main ticket without going at least six deep in that nine horse field. So even if I had played the Solana Beach correctly, Saturday was most likely still going to be a day for me to contribute instead of collect.
Oh well; onto the next race.
Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of 5 / 5 / 6 / 6 were rewarded with a payout of $1,668.85 for their fifty cent wager. May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

8/15/20 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Preview

The Solana Beach, a turf contest for California bred fillies and mares, is Saturday's featured race at Del Mar. I'll be taking a look at that contest below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.
RACE 8 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

These are juveniles, with Mandragora Seeker the only experienced runner in the field. Illumination and Kalypso are both trained by Bob Baffert, whose debut runners tend to be successful. Park Avenue is trained by John Sadler, who often does well with his first time starters.
As mentioned above, Mandragora Seeker is the only runner here with a race under her belt; and, quite frankly, Mandragora Seeker didn't show much in her debut last time out. But Mandragora Seeker is trained by Luis Mendez, whose runners tend to improve significantly in their second career tries. The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

Zimba Warrior ran well while winning over this main track last time out, albeit for different connections. It's Tiz Time fits well here with the contenders, and could be the one running best late.
Tobacco Road ran well in his first try over this main track last time out, which was also Tobacco Road's first start for Trainer Kristin Mulhall, who has been having a fine 2020 campaign. The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

Contagion has finished in the Exacta in both of his career starts over this turf course, and Contagion is the only runner in this field to have finished in the Trifecta last time out. Mr. Roary looks to be the most consistent entrant in this field, and Mr. Roary could be the one running best late.
The Hunted can be expected to improve with the added distance. Mithqaal, shipping in from upstate for Trainer Jonathan Wong, has run well in the past over this turf course. Acker could move up with the return to grass. The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.
