10/2/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Opening Weekend continues at Santa Anita, with the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship anchoring the card as Sunday's featured race.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - The John Henry Turf Championship (Grade 2) - Ten Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Ashleluvssugar (Morning Line 3-1)

B's

# 1 El Huerfano (ML 20-1)
# 8 Messi (Ger) (ML 4-1)
# 10 Texas Ryano (ML 12-1)

C's

# 3 Flamboyant (Fr) (ML 5-1)
# 7 Metaboss (ML 7-2)

Ashleyluvssugar won the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap last time out with a front running style, a repeat of which should get him back into the Winner's Circle today.  El Huerfano looks to be the quickest early in this field, and he draws the rail; maybe he can steal this one.  Messi (Ger) won the Grade 2 Sky Classic at Woodbine last time out by being up on the pace; look for him to be forwardly placed today as well.

Texas Ryano shows a steadily improving form, and he has shown the ability to hit the board while using a variety of running styles.  Flamboyant (Fr) and Metaboss look to be the ones that will be running best late.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Jilly (ML 6-1)
# 5 Viva Vegas (ML 3-1)

B's

# 6 True Testament (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Bernina Star (ML 6-1)
# 4 Marley's Freedom (ML 12-1)
# 9 Americana (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 10 Rosie Bear (No Line)

Jilly removes the hood for her second career start; runners for Trainer Bob Baffert tend to do well when making that move.  Also note how much sharper Jilly was in her most recent work; though I don't know if that work was with or without the blinkers.

Viva Vegas, also trained by Baffert, has disappointed in her first two starts as the Post Time Favorite.  Expect Viva Vegas to be the early leader today.

True Testament, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, closed well in her debut last time out, and could benefit from the added real estate to be covered today.  Bernina Star took the Place at this class level last time out; but the concern with Bernina Star is that runners for Trainer James Cassidy don't often move forward in their second career try.

Marley's Freedom is a first time starter sired by Blame, whose progeny tend to do well in their initial tries.  Americana may benefit from the hood removal in this, her second career start.

RACE 8 - OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Silent Bird (ML 5-1)
# 7 Schillairess (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 4 Rocket Fuel (ML 5-1)
# 5 Forest Blue (ML 5-2)

C's

# 2 Handful of Stripes (ML 12-1)

Silent Bird won at this class level last time out; but that last time out was nearly nine months ago.  Still, the value should be there for Silent Bird, as natural maturation for this four year old should guarantee his ability to remain competitive at this class level.

Schillairess took the Show at this class level last time out, and should be the one in front early.  Rocket Fuel gave his career worst performance last time out, which was followed by two months on the bench.  Rocket Fuel took the Place at this level two starts back, so he can definitely compete here; but I suspect that he may need a race to get back into top form.

Forest Blue may be the best in this field, but Forest Blue seems to settle for too many minor awards.  Handful of Stripes was an easy winner when graduating last time out; perhaps he finally gets what this is all about.

RACE 9 - (F) OC 75k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Ok Doll (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 2 How Unusual (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 Sutton's Smile (ML 4-1)
# 6 Do the Dance (ML 12-1)
# 11 Dashin Ashen (ML 8-1)

Scratch #12 Lynne's Legacy (NL), # 13 Fevent Femme (NL), and # 14 Mrs. Norris (NL)

Ok Doll took the Place at this class level last time out and projects to be leading the pack early.  How Unusual, who was about a length behind Ok Doll at the wire in that contest, should be more forwardly placed early today with the addition of blinkers.

Sutton's Smile fits well here on class, but seems to settle for too many minor awards.  Do the Dance defeated older on the turf at today's distance two starts back.  Dashin Ashen tries the turf for the first time today; and while the breeding doesn't suggest grass, Dashin Ashen's early quickness should insure that she is at least a pace presence.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 2,5 with 3,7 with 8 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,6,8,10 with 2,5,6 with 3,4,5,7 with 2,8 $48.00

$0.50 P4: 6 with 1,4,9 with 3,7 with 8 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 2,5 with 2 with 8 $1.00

Total: $66.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EDT / 3:00 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
