10/30/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 9 Sense of Glory (Final Odds 3.20) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 10 Avanti Bello (3.70) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Lure - # 2 A Red Tie Day (4.80) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 5 Tiz Love (15.20) - No Selection

Since our Late Pick Four play was knocked out prior to reaching the nightcap, it matter not that Tiz Love was nowhere to be found on our tickets.  But perhaps this is one to keep in mind for future reference and recall.  Tiz Love was going third off the layoff, as well as going two sprints to a route; both potentially powerful angles.  In addition, Tiz Love's last victory was for this same claiming price, but against N2L company; so today's entry at the N3L level was a natural progression up the class ladder.  Finally, Tiz Love had the fewest career starts of any of the runners in today's field; meaning, of course, that he had a better career winning percentage than any of his opponents today.

This is not to say that we should have considered Tiz Love the most likely winner of today's finale.  But all of the above adds up to a horse that stands a very good chance of outrunning his odds; especially when those odds are of the double digit variety.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  9/ 10 / 2 / 5  were rewarded with a payout of $1,452.65 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/30/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The $70k Lure is Sunday's featured race at Santa Anita; and while there is rain in the forecast, we're going to proceed on the presumption that that contest will remain on the turf.  So with that let's get to it, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - Md $75k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Picture Tube (Morning Line 5-1)
# 8 Westwood's Wizard (ML 6-1)

B's

# 9 Sense of Glory (ML 9-2)

C's

# 2 Zealous Tale (ML 6-1)
# 7 Chiksika (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 1 Uninvited (ML 5-2) and # 4 Is Trevor Clever (ML 8-1)

Picture Tube took the Show against non-Claiming Maidens last time out.  Westwood's Wizard and Sense of Glory are in for a tag for the first time in their respective careers.

Zealous Tale has disappointed as the Post Time Favorite against cheaper in all three of his career starts; but Zealous Tale has also consistently run his race each time, and he could move forward off the freshening.  Chiksika is a first time starter sired by Notional, whose progeny tend to do well at first asking.

RACE 7 - OC 62k/N2X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Semper Fortis (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 1 Rockport Kat (ML 6-1)
# 3 Howdy (ML 12-1)
# 8 St. Joe Bay (ML 5-2)

# 10 Avanti Bello (ML 3-1)

C's

None

Semper Fortis was within a length of the winner at the wire in each of his last two contests, both against stakes company.  Rockport Cat won at this class level last time out; but that was around just one turn.

Howdy missed the Winner's Circle by less than a length at this class level last time out; but Howdy was well behind Avanti Bello at the wire in his two starts prior to that.  Avanti Bello took the Place at this class level last time out.  Avanti Bellow and St. Joe Bay, who seems to carry his form from turf course to main track, appear to be the quickest in this field.

RACE 8 - The Lure $70k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 4 Twentytwentyvision (ML 9-5)

B's

# 8 Little Curlin (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Perfectly Majestic (ML 4-1)
# 2 A Red Tie Day (ML 3-1)
# 5 Drummer (Ger) (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 9 Touching Rainbows (ML 30-1) who does not draw in off the Also Eligible List

In his last five races, Twentytwentyvision has won one listed stakes and finished in the Trifecta in four Graded Stakes.  Little Curlin looks to be quickest in this field (since Touching Rainbows does not draw in) and could steal this one on the front end.

Perfectly Majestic could be the one running best late, provided he doesn't get caught in traffic.  A Red Tie Day could move forward with the cutback in distance.  Drummer (Ger) is Group Stakes placed in Europe.

RACE 9 - Clm $16k N3L - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Profound Visionary (ML 4-1)
# 4 Look Twice (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 1 Bluegrass Bronco (ML 5-1)
# 6 Thunder Basin (ML 7-2)

C's

# 3 What We Doing (ML 6-1)
# 7 Captain Akers (ML 8-1)

Profound Visionary took the Place against unconditioned $10k Claimers two starts back and now goes first off the claim for Trainer Robertino Diodoro, who tends to do well with such.  Look Twice appears to be rounding into top form.

Bluegrass Bronco is taking a huge class drop; but Bluegrass Bronco is also getting off the grass, which is where he seems to do his best running.  Thunder Basin goes first off the claim for Trainer Bob Hess Jr, who tends to do well with such.

What We Doing could be the one running best late.  Captain Akers may be more relaxed with the removal of the hood.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,8 with 6 with 4 with 2,4 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,8,9 with 1,3,6,8,10 with 4,8 with 1,2,4,6 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,7 with 6 with 4 with 2,4 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 3,8 with 6 with 1,2,5 with 2,4 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 3,8 with 6 with 4 with 3,7 $2.00

Total: $74.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EDT / 3:00 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/29/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 10 Weirdhaircut Seth (Final Odds 7.60) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - # 5 Show Me Da Lute (6.10) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Autumn Miss - # 4 Cover Song (30.70) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 7 Ann Arbor Eddie (1.20*) - "A" Selection

When your single doesn't win, little else usually matters; even more so when the actual winner isn't on your backup ticket.  But as it turns out it was just as well, as our failure to either include Weirdhaircut Seth on our big ticket or switch which Baffert first time starter we made our "A" Selection in the second leg meant that our play was already finished before the featured race was run.  And the less said about the nightcap, where we hit the "ALL" button just to land on the 6-5 Post Time Favorite, the better.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  10 / 5 / 4 / 7  were rewarded with a payout of $5,848.60 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/29/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The Grade 3 Autumn Miss for three year old fillies is Saturday's featured race at Santa Anita.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - Clm $12.5k N2L - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Triple Clown (Morning Line 7-2)

B’s

# 2 Dr. Crabby (ML 6-1)
# 8 It's Just Bob (ML 4-1)

C's

# 9 Trump Diesel (ML 5-1)
# 10 Weirdhaircut Seth (ML 6-1)
# 11 Rideo (ML 4-1)

Triple Clown took the Show two starts back against $25k N2L Starter Allowance company at today's distance.  Dr. Crabby was within a length of the winner at the wire against open $32k claimers last time out; but that was back in December.  However, Dr. Carbby did win his career debut, so he is capable of finding the Winner's Circle off just works.

It's Just Bob was within a length of the winner at the wire against slightly more expensive two and three starts back.  Trump Diesel returns to a more realistic class level today, while Rideo and Weirdhaircut Seth took the Place and Show, respectively, last time out at this class level.

RACE 7 - MSW - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Sports Reporter (ML 8-1)

B's

# 2 Bobby G (ML 4-1)
# 5 Show Me Da Lute (ML 6-1)
# 7 Sonneteer (ML 5-2)

C's

# 6 Troublewithatee (ML 6-1)

Sports Reporter and Show Me Da Lute are a pair of first time starters trained by Bob Baffert.  I give the edge to Sports Reporter because progeny of Harlan's Holiday (Sports Reporter's sire) tend to do better at first asking than those of Midnight Lute (Show Me Da Lute's sire).

Sonneteer took the Place at this class level last time out, with Bobby G crossing under the wire less than a length behind him.  Troublewithatee was much improved last time out in his first stat with blinkers on; perhaps Troublewithatee can build off that effort.

RACE 8 - (F) The Autumn Miss (Grade 3) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 10 Belvoir Bay (GB) (ML 5-2)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Danilovna (Ire) (ML 7-2)
# 3 Lady Valeur (Ire) (ML 8-1)
# 5 Barleysugar (Ire) (ML 5-1)
# 9 Dreamarcher (ML 12-1)

Over the course of her last four races, Belvoir Bay (GB) has picked up three stakes victories; one on the Del Mar main track, one charging down the hill, and one going two turns over this flat turf course.  With those victories, Belvoir Bay has demonstrated not just her versatility, but also the ability to consistently win versus stakes company.  It's the latter trait that sets hers apart from the rest of this field, and is one reason why Belvoir Bay will be a single on our big ticket.

The other reason why Belvoir Bay will be a single on our tickets is because I don't see a clear second and/or third choice among the rest of this field that I can cite as the main threat to Belvoir Bay today.  That's not to say that I think no one in this group can defeat Belvoir Bay; indeed, I am very far from saying that.  But what I am saying is that the rest of this field appears to be so evenly matched that, were I try to spread in this leg on our big ticket, there would be no reasonable way I can see to add just one or two other contenders, unless I was to just randomly stab among a group of similarly talented runners.  Or, to put it another way, were Belvoir Bay not in this field, this would be a contest where hitting the "ALL" button would probably be the best strategy.

The "C" Selections that I have added are those that I think could possibly move forward today off their most recent efforts.  But I say again that you could pick any or all of the rest of the field for that spot on our tickets.  Perhaps the best way to sum up how I feel about this contest is to say that I think Belvoir Bay has a small but clear advantage over the rest of this field, with everyone else breaking from the gate tied for second best.

RACE 9 - [S] MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Amodei (ML 6-1)
# 4 If Ur Not Early (ML 4-1)
# 7 Ann Arbor Eddie (ML 9-2)

B's

# 2 Cupid's Beau (ML 12-1)
# 3 Dickie (ML 20-1)
# 5 He's All That (ML 6-1)

# 8 Dr. Troutman (ML 6-1)
# 10 Woodfox (ML 20-1)
# 11 Iron Curtain (ML 6-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 6 Loud Stalker (ML 20-1) and # 9 Close to Midnight (ML 6-1)

Amodei took that Place at this class level two starts back.  If Ur Not Early disappointed as the Post Time Favorite at this class level last time out while taking the Place.  Ann Arbor Eddie is a first time starter sired by Square Eddie, whose progeny tend to do well at first asking, especially in contests restricted to California breds.

The "B" Selections are everyone else, as this one looks to be quite contentious.  Good luck to those playing the Super Hi Five here, as I expect the payout, despite the shortened field, to be well worth your while.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 1 with 3 with 10 with 1,4,7 $3.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,8 with 2,3,5,7 with 10 with ALL $54.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 9,10,11 with 3 with 10 with 1,4,7 $4.50
$0.50 P4: 1 with 6 with 10 with 1,4,7 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 1 with 3 with 1,3,5,9 with 1,4,7 $6.00

Total: $69.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EDT / 3:00 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/23/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 6 Joe'sgoldenholiday (Final Odds 5.90) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - # 7 Image of Joplin (6.80) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - # 10 Freedom Journey (2.80*) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 Serbian Syclone (13.90) - No Selection

Miss by a little, miss by a lot; it's all the same to the bottom line.  We've had our fair share of close calls where we just missed cashing; today was a day for us to miss big, as we whiffed with all our "A" Selections, and saw only one of our "B" Selections cross under the wire first.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  6 / 7 / 10 / 4  were rewarded with a payout of $3,131.45 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/23/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The Anoakia Stakes, a contest for two year old fillies that was once won by the great Landaluce, is Sunday's featured event on the Santa Anita card.  As that contest will take place during the early portion of today's program, we won't be analyzing it below; however, what we will be looking at are the final four races on the card, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) MSW - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 7 Go Argento (Morning Line 2-1)

B's

# 2 Americana (ML 7-2)
# 5 Adler (ML 10-1)

C's

# 1 Laura's Babydoll (ML 12-1)
# 3 Paddy Jean (ML 6-1)
# 4 Go baby Run (ML 5-1)
# 6 Joe'sgoldenholiday (ML 4-1)

This contest is for juvenile fillies; but there are no first time starters in this field, and six of the nine runners have tried the grass at least once previously.

Go Argento took the Place in her debut on the turf two starts back after leading most of the way.  Americana tries the turf for the first time; Americana looks to have the breeding for the lawn, and she could be the quickest early in this field.  Adler took the Show on the turf upstate at this class level last time out.

Laura's Babydoll is making a pretty big leap up the class ladder, going from state-bread maiden claiming to open non-claiming maidens.  But Laura's Babydoll looks like she could be speed on the rail on a turf course that's been favoring those who are quick early.

Paddy Jean adds the hood for her second career start.  Go Baby Run is the "other" Hollendorfer.  Joe'sgoldenholiday should be close up early, and may improve with with the move to two turn racing.

RACE 7 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Overcomer (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 2 Storm Comin Thru (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Dr. Go (ML 5-1)
# 6 Tribal Tribute (ML 7-2)
# 7 Image of Joplin (ML 4-1)

Overcomer lost all chance when he stumbled at the start last time out.  Two starts back Overcomer took the Place against open (non-state bred restricted) Optional Claiming company.

Storm Comin Thru took the Show at this class level last time out.  Dr. Go took the Place at this class level two starts back.  Tribal Tribute goes first off the claim for Trainer Chris Hartman, who tends to do well with such.  Image of Joplin, who has been turf only of late, has had prior success over this main track.

RACE 8 - [S] (F) MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Beau Square (ML 4-1)
# 4 Li'l Green (ML 10-1)

B's

# 5 Divine Spark (ML 4-1)
# 6 Decoded (ML 7-2)
# 10 Freedom Journey (ML 6-1)

C's

None

Beau Square and Li'l Green (trained by Doug O'Neill and Steve Miyadi, respectively) are a pair of first time starters by sires whose progeny tend to do well at first asking.  Divine Spark is a first time starter trained by Bob Baffert, and must be considered for that reason; though Divine Spark hasn't shown the quickness in the AM that you expect from a Baffert trainee.

Decoded has had troubled starts in each of her two prior outings; if she can break clean, she could make a nice move forward.  Freedom Journey could be the one running best late.

RACE 9 - OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 3 Zinvor (ML 7-2)
# 8 Tribal Fighter (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 1 Eddie Haskell (ML 12-1)

C's

# 7 Forest Blue (ML 7-2)
# 10 Gutsy Ruler (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 11 Zuri Chop (Fr) (ML 6-1), who does not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

Tribal Fighter and Zinvor took the Place and Show, respectively, at this class level charging down the hill last time out, crossing under the wire approximately a half length apart from each other.  Eddie Haskell could be quickest early on a course that has been favoring those who get the early lead.

Since winning his debut, Forest Blue has settled for the Place or Show in nine of his last ten races.  The talent is certainly there for Forest Blue, and he therefore must be respected; but he seems determined to avoid the Winner's Circle at all cost.  Gutsy Ruler took the Place at this approximate class level two and three starts back while sprinting on the Del Mar lawn.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 7 with 5 with 2,4 with 3,8 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,5,7 with 2,5 with 2,4,5,6,10 with 1,3,8 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,3,4,6 with 5 with 2,4 with 3,8 $8.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 1,6,7 with 2,4 with 3,8 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 5 with 2,4 with 7,10 $2.00

Total: $65.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EDT / 3:00 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/22/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 10 Highly Acclaimed (Final Odds 3.90) - No Selection
Race 7 - # 5 Success Rate (2.50*) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - # 1 Moonlight Drive (Ity) (1.00*) - "A" Selection & "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 And Then Some (2.60) - "B" Selection

# 3 Fueled by Bourbon, a "C" Selection on our tickets, was a late scratch from the third leg of the sequence.  By rule, we were given the Post Time Favorite, Moonlight Drive (Ity), in his place, thus giving us two winning selections in that contest.

But all of the above is for record keeping purposes only, as our day was over early when # 4 Avalanche (5.80), one of our "A" Selections in the opening leg, was a bit too late in his charge from being ninth at the half, crossing under the wire a half length behind the winner, Highly Acclaimed.  And as you can see from the above, that half length was the difference between us cashing or contributing, as we had the other three winners on our big ticket.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  10 / 5 / 1 / 4  were rewarded with a payout of $143.20 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/22/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The California Flag is Saturday's featured race at Santa Anita; and while we won't be analyzing that particular contest down the hill, we will be looking at a different pair of hill charges, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 3 Tally Mo (Morning Line 12-1)
# 4 Avalanche (ML 9-2)
# 6 South Americain (ML 7-2)

B's

None

C's

None

Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 11 Cut (ML 5-2); # 12 Conscripted (ML 10-1); # 13 Dixie Pistol (ML 9-2); # 14 Bitte (ML 6-1)

Seven of the ten juveniles that are set to break from the gate in this contest are first time starters; and none of the three experienced runners have ever competed on turf, let alone charged down the hill.  So your guess is at least as good as mine as to how any of these runners are going to handle the trip.  For those with bigger budgets, the "ALL" button looks very inviting here; but rather than go that route, I've selected the three competitors in this field (all three of whom are debut runners) whose breeding I believe gives them the edge in a field where everyone is trying the turf for the first time.

RACE 7 - Hcp 10000s - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Adair (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 5 Success Rate (ML 9-2)
# 7 Aperfectdaytofly (ML 7-2)

C's

# 1 Madelyn's Wild Max (ML 9-2)
# 4 Royal F J (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 6 Outthink 'em (ML12-1)

Note for future reference that there is no lifetime Win restriction for entrants in this contest.  So any runner three years old an upward that has started for a claiming price of $10k or less since June 1, 2015, is eligible to run here.

Adair goes first off the claim for Trainer Ruben Gomez, who tends to do well with such.  Adair is three-for-five lifetime over this main track.

Success Rate goes first off the claim for Trainer Mark Glatt, who tends to do well with such.  Aperfectdaytofly has been showing steady gradual improve over his most recent starts.  Madelyn's Wild Max and Royal F J are a pair of re-claims, rejoining the barn of a trainer from whom they had been recently claimed away.

RACE 8 - OC 62k/C - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 1 Moonlight Drive (Ity) (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 4 Bottle Rocket (ML 7-2)

C's

# 2 Secreto Primero (ML 9-2)
# 3 Fueled by Bourbon (ML 8-1)

# 5 Banze No Oeste (Brz) (ML 6-1)

Moonlight Drive (Ity) tries the hill for the first time; and while Moonlight Drive hasn't shown the front running style when routing on the flats that I like to see on runners charging down the hill for the first time, Moonlight Drive has proven to be quick enough for my tastes; and Moonlight Drive's Show finish two starts back in the Grade 3 LaJolla suggests that he may have the class edge over this field that will allow him to overcome any other deficiencies that may stand in his way today.

Bottle Rocket was victorious at this approximate class level two starts back while sprinting at Del Mar.  Secreto Primero lost all chance early last time out in the Grade 3 Eddie D; but Secreto Primero has performed well in prior tries down the hill.

Fueled by Bourbon runs at his best when charging down the hill.  Banze No Oeste (Brz) moves up in class after closing well last time out to win in his first try navigating the hill.

RACE 9 - Md $20k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 11 Pop Pop's Pizza (ML 3-1)

B's

# 1 Lucky Days Ahead (ML 5-1)
# 2 First Heir (ML 6-1)
# 4 And Then Some (ML 4-1)
# 6 Runbrorun (ML 7-2)

C's

None

Pop Pop's Pizza showed great improvement since joining the barn of Trainer Phil D'Amato.  Pop Pop's Pizza now returns from a thirteen month layoff; D'Amato tends to do well with such.

Lucky Days Ahead took the Show behind Runbrorun at this class level last time out.  Runbrorun actually crossed the wire first in that contest, but had his number taken down due to causing interference.  And Then Some took the Place at this class level last time out.

First Heir is a four year old first time starter sired by Candy Ride who is being offered for sale here at a significant discount over the $175k for which he was purchased at auction as a yearling.  While that's typically a red flag, Trainer John Sadler tends to do well with this move.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,4,6 with 3 with 1 with 11 $3.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,6 with 3,5,7 with 1,4 with 1,2,4,6,11 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,4,6 with 1,4 with 1 with 11 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3,4,6 with 3 with 2,3,5 with 11 $4.50

Total: $55.50

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EDT / 3:00 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/16/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 4 Stormy Liberal (Final Odds 2.60*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 10 Marvelous Max (2.60*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 4 Accelerant (5.90) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 6 C. C. Zipp (3.50) - "A" Selection

We had no part of the winner of the third leg, Accelerant, who out-battled our "A" Selection in that contest, # 7 Jonny's Choice (3.00), down the stretch to win by a neck; and that neck was the difference today between us cashing or trashing our tickets.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  4 / 10 / 4 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $210.95 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/16/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Half of the final four events on the Santa Anita program Sunday are charges down the hill; races which tend to be exciting, and which are nearly always a challenge to figure out.  Did we get it right today?  Well, we'll know in a few hours, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - Clm $40k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 4 Stormy Liberal (Morning Line 4-1)
# 9 Chips All In (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 5 Rangi (GB) (ML 5-1)
# 12 Bluegrass Bronco (ML 12-1)

C's

# 6 Wildfire Kid (ML 15-1)
# 10 Zuri Chop (Fr) (ML 8-1)

Scratch 2 Anthonysgotgame (No Line)

Stormy Liberal has finished in the Exacta in each of his last three trips down the hill, all against classier competition.  Chips All In takes a drop down the class ladder after disappointing as the Post Time Favorite in three of his last four starts.

Rangi (GB) missed by just a neck last time out on the flats at Del Mar.  Bluegrass Bronco runs with a price tag on his head for the first time in his career.

Wildfire Kid was a winner on the Del Mar turf at this class level two starts back, while Zuri Chop (Fr) was victorious at this class level on the Del Mar grass last time out.

RACE 7 - Md $20k - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 10 Marvelous Max (ML 3-1)

B's

# 9 Global Event (ML 2-1)

C's

# 2 Johann's Command (ML 12-1)
# 6 Resistanceisfutile (ML 5-1)
# 12 Little Mustard (ML 9-2)

Scratch # 1 Pinellas Pride (NL) and # 14 Sure Luck (NL)

Marvelous Max took the Show in each of his last two races, both against more expensive competition.  Global Event makes his second career start after being on the shelf for more than a year following a disappointing showing against non-claiming maidens.  The bullet work that Global Event tossed out over at Los Alamitos on Sept 20 suggests that he's ready to run today; while the fact that Global Event is trained by Bob Baffert pretty much guarantees that he will be over-bet today.

Johann's Command took the Show the last time that he was in this cheap.  Resistanceisfutile has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of his last four starts.  Little Mustard missed graduation by just half a length at this class level last time out.

RACE 8 - Clm $8k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Jonny's Choice (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 2 Tiz Jolie (ML 4-1)

C's

# 3 Celebrity Status (ML 8-1)
# 9 Alltheleavesrbrown (ML 12-1)
# 10 Black Tie (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 1 Broadway Nika (NL)

Jonny's Choice defeated more expensive at today's distance two starts back, with Tiz Jolie just a neck behind.  Celebrity Status is a re-claim for Trainer Peter Miller, for whom Celebrity Status won at this class level back in June.  Alltheleavesrbrown missed a trip to the Winner's Circle by just a nose at this class level three starts back.  Black Tie has taken the Place at this class level in two of his last three starts.

RACE 9 - (F) MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 6 C. C. Zip (ML 4-1)
# 10 Could Be Magic (ML 7-2)

B's

# 2 Angel Eria (Ire) (ML 6-1)
# 4 Georgia Blue (ML 12-1)
# 7 Lori's Attitude (ML 4-1)
# 8 Special Gal (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Sassy Ashley (ML 12-1)
# 3 Fabulous Lady (ML 12-1)
# 5 Curricula (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 12 Blame the Weather (ML 12-1) who does not draw in off The Also Eligible List

C. C. Zip has taken the Place at this class level in each of her two prior turf races, both routes on the flats.  Could Be Magic took the Place in her debut last time out at this class level.

Angel Eria (Ire) may improve with the cut back in real estate.  Georgia Blue took the Place in her only prior try charging down the hill.  Lori's Attitude was within a length of the winner at the wire in each of her two prior charges down the hill.  Special Gal disappointed as the Post Time Favorite last time out, and could improve with the turn back in distance.

Sassy Ashley has shown good early speed when routing on the flats; such tend to do well when they try the hill.  Fabulous Lady tries the turf for the first time after showing good early speed on the main track.  Curricula makes his first start for Trainer Bill Spawr, who tends to do well with such.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4,9 with 10 with 7 with 6,10 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

10/15/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 7 Matriculate (Final Odds 4.40) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - # 1 He Will (2.00*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 2 Got Even (12.70) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 8 Sundar Creek (11.70) - "C" Selection

Yes, once again we had 'em all, but not all on any one ticket; but, quite frankly, when half of your winning picks were "C" Selections, you really didn't come that close to collecting (especially when the margin of victory in those two contests was quite definitive).

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of 7 / 1 / 2 / 8  were rewarded with a payout of $1,019.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/15/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The California Distaff is Saturday's featured race at Santa Anita; a contest which we will not be previewing, as it will be run during the early portion of today's card.  What we will be analyzing are the final four events on the program, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - Clm $25k N2L - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Sleepwalker (Morning Line 3-1)
# 9 Nuke Laloosh (ML 7-2)

B’s

None

C's

# 4 Wrightwood (ML 4-1)
# 5 Dreamy Martini (ML 8-1)

# 7 Matriculate (ML 7-2)

Scratch # 1 Jet Seeker (ML 50-1)

Sleepwalker competes with a price tag on his head for the first time in his career.  Sleepwalker took the Show against classier opponents over this main track three starts back.  Nuke Laloosh didn't much care for the grass last time, and should improve with the return to the main track, as well as the drop in class.

Wrightwood took the Place at this class level two starts back; though I suspect Wrightwood is better suited to two turn racing.  Dreamy Martini was victorious is his one prior try over a Fast dirt track.  Matriculate moves up from state bred to open company for the first time in his career; but is also making his first career start with a price tag on his head.

RACE 7 - OC 40k/C - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 1 He Will (ML 3-1)
# 4 Fabozzi (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 6 American League (ML 7-2)
# 9 Reflected Star (ML 4-1)
# 12 Fritz Johansen (ML 4-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 10 Oso (ML 30-1).  Bring in # 12 Fritz Johansen (ML 4-1) from the Also Eligible list, but scratch the other three: # 11 Lamaan (ML 15-1); # 13 Sawyer's Hill (ML 8-1); # 14 Rye Patch (ML 5-1)

He Will just missed at this approximate class level last time out.  Fabozzi fits well against this level of competition.  American League was a daylight winner last time out in his first career start routing on the grass.

Reflected Star could be the one running best late.  Fritz Johansen goes first off the claim for Trainer Peter Miller, who tends to do well with such.

RACE 8 - OC 40k/C - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Spud Spivens (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 2 Got Even (ML 8-1)
# 8 Street Moxie (ML 4-1)
# 9 Saint Dermot (ML 3-1)

C's

# 4 China Girl Lover (ML 5-1)
# 10 Gangster (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 7 Brimstoned (ML 8-1)

Spud Spiven and Got Even look to be the quickest here, and it's to their advantage that they drew the rail and the number two slot, respectively.  Got Even hasn't been able to find the Winner's Circle since January of 2015; but if Spud Spiven should falter early, Got Even could be gone before the others get started.

Street Moxie took the Show at this class level last time out, about a length behind Saint Dermot at the wire.  Saint Dermot has finished in the Trifecta eight of the ten times that he has competed over this main track; so perhaps the change in venue will allow him to make up the six and a half furlongs by which he lost to Spud Spivens last time, while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite for the third straight time.

China Girl Lover looks like he'd rather be competing on some California grass; but Trainer Dan Hendricks tends to do well when his runners switch from turf to dirt.  Gangster has been working well for his west coast debut for Trainer Doug O'Neill after spending the past twelve months on the bench.

RACE 9 - (F) Md $20k - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 10 Yavrig (ML 5-2)

B's

# 2 U Go Gal (ML 6-1)
# 7 Prowling Around (ML 9-2)

C's

# 1 Correlation (ML 10-1)
# 8 Sundar Creek (ML 8-1)

Yarvig has finished in the Trifecta in each of her last six contests and could move forward with the return to one turn racing.  U Go Gal took the Place at this class level last time out.  Prowling Around has taken the Show in each of her two career starts.

Correlation could be speed on the rail as she makes her second career start with the blinkers on.  Sundar Creek could improve with the return to one turn racing.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2,9 with 1,4 with 1 with 10 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,9 with 1,4,6,9,12 with 1,2,8,9 with 2,7,10 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4,5,7 with 1,4 with 1 with 10 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 2,9 with 1,4 with 4,10 with 10 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 2,9 with 1,4 with 1 with 1,8 $4.00

Total: $75.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EDT / 3:00 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/9/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 5 Ward 'n Jerry (Final Odds 7.90) - No Selection
Race 7 - # 11 Caiifornia Clone (0.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The L. A. Woman - # 5 Gloryzapper (4.60) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 9 Mr. Roary (5.60) - "A" Selection

As we had anticipated, our "A" Selection, # 6 Glory Bound (2.50), had the lead in mid-stretch in the opening leg of the sequence.  As we had not anticipated, Glory Bound was unable to hold said lead, having to settle for the Show, a length and three quarters behind the winner, Ward 'n Jerry; who, unfortunately for us, was nowhere to be found on our tickets.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  5 / 11 / 5 / 9  were rewarded with a payout of $367.75 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/9/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The Grade 3 L. A. Woman, a one turn sprint on the main track for fillies and mares, is Sunday's featured race at Santa Anita.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Glory Bound (Morning Line 4-1)

B’s

# 2 Contemplate (ML 12-1)

C's

# 1 Red White and Dine (ML 30-1)
# 3 Temple Keys (ML 3-1)
# 9 Over Par (ML 7-2)

Scratch # 8 Anatolian Heat (No Line), as well as the following Also Eligibles: # 12 Junior Gilliam (ML 6-1; # 13 Royalist (ML 15-1); # 14 Plain Wrap (ML 15-1)

Glory Bound missed by just a nose at this class level two starts back.  Contemplate stretches out to two turns on the flats for the first time in his career; that, as well as this being his third start off the long layoff, suggests that Contemplate could upset today.

Red Wine and Dine tries the turf for the first time, and with his speed on the rail Red Wine and Dine could smoke the grass today.  Temple Keys and Over Par are top contenders at this class level that may deserve higher consideration than I am giving them here; but the way the new turf course at Santa Anita has been playing to speed so far this meet, in my opinion, puts Temple Keys and Over Par at too great a disadvantage.

RACE 7 - [S] MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 10 Sunday Nap (ML 4-1)
# 11 California Clone (ML 9-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Fandarel Dancer (ML 30-1)
# 3 Close to Midnight (ML 12-1)
# 6 P Town Titan (ML 12-1)

Sunday Nap showed good early speed while taking the Show in his debut at this class level last time out.  California Clone has finished in the Trifecta in each of his two career starts, both at today's class level.

Fandarel Dancer was quick early in his debut last time out, and could be speed on the rail.  Close to Midnight ran reasonably well at this class level two starts back, and now will run for the first time as a gelding after showing minimal interest last time out.  P Town Titan is a first time starter sired by Warrior's Reward, whose progeny tend to do well at first asking.

RACE 8 - (F) The L. A. Woman (Grade 3) - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Luminance (ML 9-5)

B's

# 2 Indriya (ML 15-1)
# 5 Gloryzapper (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Wild At Heart (ML 9-2)
# 3 Perfect Pic (ML 3-1)
# 6 Juno (Brz) (ML 10-1)

Luminance, trained by Bob Baffert, defeated Bendable in an OC $62k/N2X last time out.  Since that contest Bendable has gone on to win the $75k Bob Lewis and take the Show in the Grade 2 T. C. O. A. Stakes at Keeneland.

Indriya, a Group Stakes winner in Brazil, makes her North American debut in this contest today, as well as trying the dirt for the first time.  If  Indriya can handle the surface switch, then she should do well here today.

Gloryzapper has finished in the Exacta in all six of her career dirt starts.  Wild At Heart took the Show in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks back in April 2015 behind Luminance.  Perfect Pic regressed last time out in her second career start, and could return to the form that she showed in winning her debut.  Juno (Brz), a Group 1 Stakes winner in her native Brazil, took the Show in the $75k Desert Stormer II two starts back.

RACE 9 - OC 75k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 7 Letithappen (ML 15-1)
# 9 Mr. Roary (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 3 Tiz a Billy (ML 6-1)
# 4 Spanish Hombre (ML 8-1)
# 5 Mittersill (Ire) (ML 4-1)
# 6 Diplodocus (ML 4-1)
# 10 Alaskan Son (Ire) (ML 7-2)

C's

None

Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 11 Rye (ML 4-1); # 12 Gabo's Macondo (ML 20-1); # 13 Defiantly (ML 5-1); # 14 Fabozzi (ML 8-1)

Letithappen took the Place at this approximate class level upstate on the grass last time out.  Mr. Roary, winner of the $85k Rainbow the last time that he competed on this turf course, gets some much needed class relief today.

Tiz a Billy should improve with the stretchout today.  Spanish Hombre was within two lengths of the winner at the wire at this approximate class level two starts back.  Mittersill (Ire) missed by a half length at this class level last time out.  Diplodocus and Alaskan Son (Ire) fit well here on class but could be disadvantaged by their late running style, based upon the way that this turf course has been playing.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 10,11 with 4 with 7,9 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,6 with 10,11 with 2,4,5 with 3,4,5,6,7,9,10 $42.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,3,9 with 10,11 with 4 with 7,9 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 1,3,6 with 4 with 7,9 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 10,11 with 1,3,6 with 7,9 $6.00

Total: $61.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EDT / 3:00 PDT.  Good luck to all.

10/8/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 9 Exemplar (Final Odds 6.20) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The City of Hope Mile - # 10 Vyjack (4.30) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 9 Westmont (1.30*) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 10 Partyinthepaddock (1.20*) - "A" Selection

Including Vyjack on our big ticket as our single instead of # 8 Obviously (Ire) (1.00*) (who took the Show in The City of Hope Mile) is an idea only possible with the use of 20-20 hindsight; and including Vyjack with Obviously on the big ticket would have completely blown up the budget, or required gutting our selections in the other legs; which, again with 20-20 hindsight, may not have been that bad an idea.  But realistically the fault in today's play was the failure to give more consideration to Westmont as an "A" Selection, at the very least alongside our other two "A" Selections in that leg, # 2 Iron Curtain (27.70) and # 11 Downside Up (4.70) (who took the Place and Show, respectively, behind Westmont).  But we didn't, and for that reason today was a day for us to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  9 / 10 / 9 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $155.10 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/8/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

There're a trio of stakes on the Saturday card at Santa Anita; one of which, the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile, has made it into the final four events on the day.  So we'll be looking at that contest below as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 7 - Clm $12.5k N2L - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 9 Exemplar (Morning Line 5-1)
# 10 Redneck Crazy (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 1 H R Express (ML 30-1)
# 3 Unbridled Rocket (ML 8-1)
# 5 Curly Road (ML 8-1)
# 6 Rideo (ML 7-2)
# 8 Weirdhaircut Seth (ML 12-1)

C's

# 2 Boompa (ML 4-1)
# 4 My Son John (ML 20-1)
# 7 Etailer (ML 6-1)

Needless to say, I considered this race to be extremely contentious, as every runner is being used in some shape or form; so if you can do so and stay within your budget, you might want to give serious thought to just hitting the "ALL" button on your big ticket here.

Exemplar took the Show at this class level last time out.  Redneck Crazy finished in the Trifecta in each of his last two races against more expensive.

H R Express has shown good early speed in each of his last two contests and could be rounding up to a new best effort.  Unbridled Rocket took the Place against more expensive last time out.  Curly Road and Weirdharicut Seth both drop in for the lowest price tag of their respective careers.

Rideo was over-matched against more expensive last time out and should improve with the class drop.  The "C's" are everyone else.

RACE 8 - The City of Hope Mile (Grade 2) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Obviously (Ire) (ML 9-5)

B's

None

C's

# 4 Om (ML 2-1)
# 10 Vyjack (ML 4-1)

Obviously (Ire), winner of the Grade 3 Poker on the east coast last time out, looks in good position to wire this field today.  Om, like Obviously a multiple Graded Stakes winner over this turf course, will hope to stay close and overtake Obviously in the stretch.  Vyjack, the "other" Phil D'Amato, could be in good position to get up late before the closers have a chance to get into gear.

RACE 9 - [S] Md $50k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Iron Curtain (ML 15-1)
# 11 Downside Up (ML 4-1)

B's

# 9 Westmont (ML 7-2)

C's

# 3 Joshuas Glory (ML 50-1)
# 6 Enter the Code (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 4 Loud Stalker (ML 6-1)

Iron Curtain showed good early speed in his debut last time out with the apprentice rider on his back.  Downside Up took the Place at this class level two and three starts back.  Westmont finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of his last two starts.

Joshuas Glory had a hard work early this week at Los Alamitos, after not showing much last time out in his debut.  Enter the Code finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of his last two starts.

RACE 10 - (F) MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 10 Partyinthepaddock (ML 5-2)

B's

# 4 Diva La Mousse (ML 5-1)
# 6 Go Baby Run (ML 8-1)
# 7 Munny Spunt (ML 12-1)
# 8 Settle Down Eileen (ML 12-1)
# 9 Gio's Lady (ML 6-1)
# 11 Grand Prix (ML 6-1)

C's

None

Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 12 Street Love (ML 6-1); # 13 Ciao Bella Rosa (ML 3-1); # 14 Laura's Babydoll (ML 10-1)

Partyinthepaddock showed good form in her debut on dirt last time out, and having Harlan's Holiday as a sire suggests that she'll handle the turf well.  Diva La Mousse has shown good early speed in each of her two prior career starts, both on the main track.

Munny Spunt is a first time starter sired by Munnings, whose progeny tend to do well in their debuts.  Settle Down Eileen and Grand Prix have both shown good early speed sprinting on the dirt, while Gio's Lady and Go Baby Run showed some early quickness last time out while routing on the grass.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 9,10 with 8 with 2,11 with 10 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,3,5,6,8,9,10 with 8 with 2,9,11 with 4,6,7,8,9,10,11 $73.50

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,4,7 with 8 with 2,11 with 10 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 9,10 with 4,10 with 2,11 with 10 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 9,10 with 8 with 3,6 with 10 $2.00

Total: $86.50

Post Time for Race 7 is 6:30 EDT / 3:30 PDT.  Good luck to all.

10/2/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - The John Henry Turf Classic - # 6 Ashleyluvssugar (Final Odds 3.40) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 11 Tapped (3.90) - No Selection
Race 8 - # 3 Silent Bird (8.00) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 2 How Unusual (5.60) - "B" Selection

Tapped's victory in the second leg came by virtue of winning the head bob over our "A" Selection in that contest, # 2 Jilly (3.50*); and the nose difference that separated those two runners at the wire was the difference between us cashing or trashing our tickets today.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of 6 / 11 / 3 / 2 were rewarded with a payout of $702.80 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/2/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Opening Weekend continues at Santa Anita, with the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship anchoring the card as Sunday's featured race.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - The John Henry Turf Championship (Grade 2) - Ten Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Ashleluvssugar (Morning Line 3-1)

B's

# 1 El Huerfano (ML 20-1)
# 8 Messi (Ger) (ML 4-1)
# 10 Texas Ryano (ML 12-1)

C's

# 3 Flamboyant (Fr) (ML 5-1)
# 7 Metaboss (ML 7-2)

Ashleyluvssugar won the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap last time out with a front running style, a repeat of which should get him back into the Winner's Circle today.  El Huerfano looks to be the quickest early in this field, and he draws the rail; maybe he can steal this one.  Messi (Ger) won the Grade 2 Sky Classic at Woodbine last time out by being up on the pace; look for him to be forwardly placed today as well.

Texas Ryano shows a steadily improving form, and he has shown the ability to hit the board while using a variety of running styles.  Flamboyant (Fr) and Metaboss look to be the ones that will be running best late.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Jilly (ML 6-1)
# 5 Viva Vegas (ML 3-1)

B's

# 6 True Testament (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Bernina Star (ML 6-1)
# 4 Marley's Freedom (ML 12-1)
# 9 Americana (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 10 Rosie Bear (No Line)

Jilly removes the hood for her second career start; runners for Trainer Bob Baffert tend to do well when making that move.  Also note how much sharper Jilly was in her most recent work; though I don't know if that work was with or without the blinkers.

Viva Vegas, also trained by Baffert, has disappointed in her first two starts as the Post Time Favorite.  Expect Viva Vegas to be the early leader today.

True Testament, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, closed well in her debut last time out, and could benefit from the added real estate to be covered today.  Bernina Star took the Place at this class level last time out; but the concern with Bernina Star is that runners for Trainer James Cassidy don't often move forward in their second career try.

Marley's Freedom is a first time starter sired by Blame, whose progeny tend to do well in their initial tries.  Americana may benefit from the hood removal in this, her second career start.

RACE 8 - OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Silent Bird (ML 5-1)
# 7 Schillairess (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 4 Rocket Fuel (ML 5-1)
# 5 Forest Blue (ML 5-2)

# 2 Handful of Stripes (ML 12-1)

Silent Bird won at this class level last time out; but that last time out was nearly nine months ago.  Still, the value should be there for Silent Bird, as natural maturation for this four year old should guarantee his ability to remain competitive at this class level.

Schillairess took the Show at this class level last time out, and should be the one in front early.  Rocket Fuel gave his career worst performance last time out, which was followed by two months on the bench.  Rocket Fuel took the Place at this level two starts back, so he can definitely compete here; but I suspect that he may need a race to get back into top form.

Forest Blue may be the best in this field, but Forest Blue seems to settle for too many minor awards.  Handful of Stripes was an easy winner when graduating last time out; perhaps he finally gets what this is all about.

RACE 9 - (F) OC 75k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Ok Doll (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 2 How Unusual (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 Sutton's Smile (ML 4-1)
# 6 Do the Dance (ML 12-1)
# 11 Dashin Ashen (ML 8-1)

Scratch #12 Lynne's Legacy (NL), # 13 Fevent Femme (NL), and # 14 Mrs. Norris (NL)

Ok Doll took the Place at this class level last time out and projects to be leading the pack early.  How Unusual, who was about a length behind Ok Doll at the wire in that contest, should be more forwardly placed early today with the addition of blinkers.

Sutton's Smile fits well here on class, but seems to settle for too many minor awards.  Do the Dance defeated older on the turf at today's distance two starts back.  Dashin Ashen tries the turf for the first time today; and while the breeding doesn't suggest grass, Dashin Ashen's early quickness should insure that she is at least a pace presence.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

10/1/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 8 - The Rodeo Drive - # 4 Avenge (Final Odds 5.20) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - The Zenyatta - # 5 Stellar Wind (2.00) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - The Chandelier - #2 Noted and Quoted (7.40) - "C" Selection
Race 11 - The Unzip Me - # 3 Belvoir Bay (GB) (6.40) - "B" Selection

You all already know how this works: we had 'em all, but not all on any one ticket.  A little tinkering here or there with our selections might have altered that result; but lacking as we do a time machine, today will have to stand as a day for us to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here is the $0.50 Will Pay for the runner to which we were alive in the finale:

# 10 Swift Lady (3.30*) - $385.05 Finish: 12th

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of 4 / 5 / 2 / 3 were rewarded with a payout of $770.95 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

10/1/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

It's Opening Saturday at Santa Anita Park, and they've put together a huge card filled with Graded Stakes, including several Breeders' Cup Win And You're In contests.  Three of those Grade 1's have found their way onto the final four slots in the program; so we'll be taking a look at them below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 8 - (F) The Rodeo Drive (Grade 1) - Ten Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 4 Avenge (Morning Line 6-1)

B's

# 8 Fresh Feline (ML 20-1)
# 12 Zipessa (ML 7-2)

# 13 Elektrum (Ire) (ML 5-1)
# 14 Sobradora Inc (Arg) (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Keri Belle (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 3 Queen of The Sand (Ire) (ML 20-1) and # 10 Nancy From Nairobi (ML 10-1)

Avenge and Zipessa project to be the front runners in this field; a nice advantage when you have a dozen runners leaving the gate, as it means you won't have to skirt through traffic late.  Advantage to Avenge for her victory last time out in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee.

Fresh Feline just missed victory by a neck in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon two starts back.  Fresh Feline has demonstrated the ability to win at this distance over this course in the past.

As mentioned above, Zipessa, winner of the Grade 3 Dr. James Penny Memorial two starts back, should be forwardly placed early.  Elektrum (Ire), who was a neck behind Avenge at the wire last time out in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee, could be the one running best late.  Sobradora Inc (Arg) and Keri Belle are two that could improve with the added distance.

RACE 9 - (F) The Zenyatta (Grade 1) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Beholder (ML 3-5)
# 5 Stellar Wind (ML 8-5)

B's

# 3 Vale Dori (Arg) (ML 10-1)

C's

None

There's not much I can tell you about Beholder and Stellar Wind that you don't already know.  Vale Dori (Arg), a Grade 1 winner in her native Argentina, projects to be the early leader; so all Vale Dori will have to do to win is hold off Beholder in the stretch and Stellar Wind at the wire; what could be easier?

Somewhat more seriously, Vale Dori acquitted herself quite well against the males in the Grade 2 UAE Derby earlier this year, and could be ready to move forward just due to natural maturation.  Perhaps the challenge today is too much too soon for the Bob Baffert trained Vale Dori; and while that's certainly a valid opinion, if Vale Dori does step forward in the way that I believe that she can today, even if she should fall short, this will mark the last time that you'll be able to get her at double digit odds.

RACE 10 - (F) The Chandelier (Grade 1) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Champagne Room (ML 4-1)
# 4 Zapperkat (ML 9-2)
# 5 American Cleopatra (ML 7-2)

B's

None

C's

# 1 With Honors (ML 9-2)
# 2 Noted and Quoted (ML 6-1)
# 8 Mistressofthenight (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 9 Princess Coco (ML 15-1)

Champagne Room is the only Graded Stakes winner in this field of juvenile fillies, having gotten her picture taken two starts back after the Grade 2 Sorrento.  Champagne Room and American Cleopatra took the Show and Place, respectively, in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante last time out.

Zapperkat was most impressive winner her debut last time out, and she could improve with the added distance.  With Honors will be tough if she can handle the surface switch.  Noted and Quoted is the "other" Baffert.  Mistressofthenight is the one that could be running best late.

RACE 11 - (F) The Unzip Me $70k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 10 Swift Lady (ML 9-2)

B's

# 3 Belvoir Bay (GB) (ML 6-1)
# 4 Nine Point Nine (ML 20-1)

C's

# 6 Nodiac (Ire) (ML 10-1)
# 9 Cheekaboo (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 8 Lady Valeur (Ire) (ML 12-1).  Bring in # 13 Cover Song (ML 15-1) off the Also Eligible List.

Swift Lady is two-for-three lifetime charging down the hill, and has yet to finish out of the Exacta when not competing against So Sweetitiz.  Belvoir Bay (GB) is a stakes winner on both turf and dirt, and the front running style that Belvoir Bay has demonstrated when routing on the grass is a trait shared by those that tend to do well when shifting to the downhill course.

Nine Point Nine should improve with the move back to turf sprints.  Nodiac (Ire) and Cheekaboo are both fine horses that fit well here on class, but who may be disadvantaged by the cutback in distance.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4 with 2,5 with 3,4,5 with 10 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,8,12,13,14 with 2,3,5 with 3,4,5 with 3,4,10 $67.50

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1 with 2,5 with 3,4,5 with 10 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 4 with 2,5 with 1,2,8 with 10 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 4 with 2,5 with 3,4,5 with 6,9 $6.00

Total: $85.50

Post Time for Race 8 is 7:09 EDT / 4:09 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
