4/30/16 Golden Gate Fields Golden Pick 6 - Results

Race 5 - # 3 Mesquite Dancer (Final Odds 0.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 6 - # 7 Bananappeal (11.10) - No Selection
Race 7 - # 7 Stipend (2.90) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The San Francisco Mile - # 11 Alert Bay (3.70) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 10 Air Nashoba (89.10) - No Selection
Race 10 - # 6 Winning Causeway (1.60*) - "A"  Selection

We used six of the nine runners in the Race 6 field, and yet still managed to miss the winner.  In our defense, it had taken Bananappeal eleven tries to get his first victory, and he had to drop to the Maiden $8k level in order to graduate; so it was fair to wonder if he could compete at this level.  Still, Bananappeal's form does look much better if you focus only on his races on the synthetic; plus he did have that sharp work over this track this past Sunday.  So perhaps we should have given stronger consideration to Bananappeal's chances.

But Air Nashoba?  If you had Air Nashoba in the top spot on any of your tickets, for any wager, te salut.  I hope you profited well from that decision.

Anyway, I think our biggest sin was trying too hard to beat the favorites in the opening and closing legs of the sequence.  Trying to beat legitimate favorites is a good way to burn through your bankroll, and singling Mesquite Dancer and Winning Causeway in their respective contests would have gone a long way towards increasing our chances of collecting instead of contributing.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Golden Pick Six sequence of  3 / 7 / 7 / 11 / 10 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $22,499.64 for their twenty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

4/30/16 Golden Gate Fields Golden Pick 6 - Preview

It's the last Saturday in April; the Kentucky Derby is close enough that you could shake hands with it.  But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves; there's still the here and now, and for now the here that we'll be looking at is upstate California, where the featured race is the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile, and the jackpot Pick Six pool is just under half a million dollars.  So with that as background, let's take a run at The Golden Pick Six at Golden Gate Fields.

RACE 5 - (F) Md $8k - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 3 Mesquite Dancer (Morning Line 8-5)

B's

# 2 Desert Smoke (ML 6-1)

C's

# 6 Beach Please (ML 5-1)
# 10 Saucy Babe (ML 20-1)

Scratch # 5 Meaningless Banter (ML 9-2)

Mesquite Dancer took the Place at this class level last time out, and now goes first off the claim for Trainer John Martin, who wins with approximately 40% of such.  Desert Smoke returns to one turn racing and drops in class.

Beach Please showed brief early speed against more expensive last time out.  Saucy Babe is a first time starter sired by Informed, whose progeny have done well at first asking, in a limited sample size.

RACE 6 - Clm $12.5k N2L - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 10 Wise Tale (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 6 Bornatthetrack (ML 5-1)

C's

# 2 Badasmywifeletsmeb (ML 5-2)
# 3 Don'tsellhimshort (ML 6-1)
# 4 Merle (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 1 Compratore (ML 7-2)

Wise Tale took the Show against more expensive last time out.  Bornatthetrack missed victory by just a neck the last time that he competed at this class level around just one turn.

Badasmywifeletsmeb and Don'tsellhimshort both fit at this class level; they are also, however, a combined career two-for-forty-two.  Merle has finished in the Exacta in each of his last two contests, both at this class level.

RACE 7 - [S] (F) MSW - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Doris Johnson (ML 7-2)

B's

# 1 Unusual Sky (ML 10-1)
# 4 Ish (ML 10-1)
# 7 Stipend (ML 2-1)

C's

# 6 Starring Role (ML 12-1)

Doris Johnson's two prior turf routes, both at this class level, were both solid efforts.  Unusual Sky could improve in her second career start.  Ish took the Show against open non-claiming maidens at today's distance last time out.

Stipend took the Show at this class level last time out.  Starring Role is a first time starter sired by Vronsky, whose progeny tend to do well on the grass as well as at first asking.

RACE 8 - The San Francisco Mile (Grade 3) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 12 Bal a Bali (Brz) (ML 2-1)

B's

# 13 Gabriel Charles (ML 3-1)

C's

# 7 G. G. Ryder (ML 8-1)
# 11 Alert Bay (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 2 Home Run Kitten (ML 10-1)

Bal a Bali (Brz) has finished in the Trifecta in each of his last three races, all Graded Stakes.  Gabriel Charles won the Grade 1 Eddie Read last time out; but that last time out was over nine months ago.

G. G. Ryder, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, won last year's running of this contest.  Alert Bay shows a slowly declining form since winning the Grade 2 City of Hope Mile last September; but the sharp work last Saturday may be a sign that he's ready to deliver a sharp effort.

RACE 9 - [S] MSW - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Country Road (ML 8-5)

B's

# 11 Zoristo (ML 12-1)

C's

# 2 Vow to Be Tops (ML 6-1)
# 5 He Could (ML 9-2)
# 9 The Big Train (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 1 Son of a Royal (ML 20-1)

Country Road ships upstate after taking the Show in each of his two prior career starts, both at this class level.  Zoristo tries the grass for the first time after hitting the board several times against open non-claiming maidens on the synthetic.

Vow to Be Tops ships upstate and goes for the first time for the barn of Trainer Tim McCanna, who tends to do well with new arrivals.  He Could took the Show at this class level charging down the hill at Santa Anita last time out.  The Big Train drops into state bred only company while getting on the grass for the first time.

RACE 10 - Md $20k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Troyes (ML 6-1)
# 6 Winning Causeway (ML 9-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Ace Deuce (ML 5-2)
# 8 Meeting in Heaven (ML 20-1)
# 9 Prince of Prague (ML 9-2)

Troyes took the Show against non-claiming maidens two starts back at today's distance, albeit on the synthetic main track.  Troyes is sired by Lemon Drop Kid, so the surface switch should not be a problem.

Winning Causeway took the Place against non-claiming maidens in each of his last two starts on the grass.  Ace Deuce and Prince of Prague should be forwardly placed early.

OK, that's the analysis.  While this is a jackpot wager, we won't be putting all our selections on one ticket.  While we still hold out hope that this could be the luckiest day of our lives, budgetary constraints must be respected.  I think it's also safe to presume that our "A" Selections won't form the basis of a unique ticket, so we should be safe in pressing those up.  So with that, playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P6: 3 with 10 with 3 with 12 with 8 with 2,6 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.20 P6: 2,3 with 6,10 with 1,3,4,7 with 12,13 with 8,11 with 2,6 $25.60

A's with One C

$0.20 P6: 6,10 with 10 with 3 with 12 with 8 with 2,6 $0.80
$0.20 P6: 3 with 2,3,4 with 3 with 12 with 8 with 2,6 $1.20
$0.20 P6: 3 with 10 with 6 with 12 with 8 with 2,6 $0.40
$0.20 P6: 3 with 10 with 3 with 7,11 with 8 with 2,6 $0.80
$0.20 P6: 3 with 10 with 3 with 12 with 2,5,9 with 2,6 $1.20
$0.20 P6: 3 with 10 with 3 with 12 with 8 with 1,8,9 $0.60

Total: $32.60

Post Time for Race 4 is 7:15 EDT / 4:15 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/28/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - # 6 Armored Car (Final Odds 1.10*) - "A" Selection
Race 6 - # 5 Shiny Nugget (2.10*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 9 Johns Journey (1.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 7 Jonny's Choice (3.50) - No Selection

Last week, Thursday, April 21, our Late Pick Four play lost when Jonny's Choice did not deliver as the Post Time Favorite in the final leg and finished fifth.  Today, our Late Pick Four play loses because of our failure to include Jonny's Choice on our tickets.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 1 Dustin’s Passion (1.20*) - $32.20 Finish: 3rd
# 2 Macho Sox (9.60) - $180.40 Did Not Finish
# 4 Valentine Boy (9.10) - $127.95 Finish: 5th
# 6 Warren’s Rail Bird (13.20) - $253.30 Finish: 4th
# 8 Deputy’s Command (6.70) - $99.45 Finish: 6th
# 10 No Surrender (20.80) - $373.05 Finish: 7th

But such was not to be.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  6 / 5 / 9 / 7  were rewarded with a payout of $66.30 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/28/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

It seems that I have once again found myself with some spare time on my hands; perhaps not so coincidentally, it also seems that I have once again found myself with a full list of household chores waiting to be completed.  But those will have to wait, as we have a little mid-week fun by taking another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 5 - Md $20k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Spirit World (Morning Line 5-2)
# 6 Armored Car (ML 2-1)

B's

None

C's

# 2 Cheap O Charlie (ML 3-1)
# 5 Proud Fighter (ML 10-1)
# 7 Chanito (ML 8-1)

Spirit World has taken the Place in four of his seven career starts, all at this class level.  Spirit World disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of his last two starts.  In my opinion seven starts is way too few to decree that a horse has seconditis; but Spirit World's record does suggest that some caution is advised.

Armored Car, who has failed in each of his last three contests as the Post Time Favorite, continues his drop through the class ranks for Trainer Doug O'Neill.  Armored Car is also cutting back in distance to his first one turn race, which should help as he has backed up in the stretch in each of his eight prior career starts.

Cheap O Charlie adds the hood as he seeks to return to the form that he showed in his first two career starts before going on the shelf for thirteen months.  Proud Fighter returns from an extended layoff and moves to the barn of Trainer Justin Clark, who has enjoyed success when sending out newly acquired stock for the first time.  Chanito drops in for a tag for the first time, though Chanito's recent efforts suggest this isn't so much a class drop as it is an acceptance of reality.

RACE 6 - Clm $16k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Shiny Nugget (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 3 Last One Standing (ML 7-2)
# 7 Ready Cat (ML 5-1)
# 8 Cherokee Dynasty (ML 4-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 2 Courageous Dave (ML 6-1)

Shiny Nugget won at this class level last time out.  While that win came for a different barn, new Trainer Steve Knapp does quite well (in a limited sample) when sending out runners first time off a claim.

Last One Standing drops in class while cutting back to just one turn racing.  Note also the bullet work from the gate last Thursday.  Ready Cat defeated more expensive two starts back.  Cherokee Dynasty took the Show at this class level in each of his last two starts.

RACE 7 - Clm $8k N1X - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 9 John's Journey (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 1 Senator Bob (ML 6-1)
# 7 Mr. Itkins (ML 7-2)

C's

# 3 Hawk's Eyes (Brz) (ML 12-1)
# 4 Bound for Heaven (ML 20-1)
# 8 Crazy Al (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 5 Zippingaroundtown (ML 8-1)

The "X" in the race description above should probably be a "Y", as the conditions limit this contest to those which have not won a race in 2016, excluding Maiden, Claiming, and Starter Races for $6.25k or less.

John's Journey took the Show at Santa Anita at this class level two starts back.  The concern with John's Journey is that you have to go back a dozen starts to July 5, 2014 to find the last time that he visited the Winner's Circle.

Senator Bob has been successful competing over this track of late during the nighttime hours, and did take the Show against non-conditioned $10k claimers at Del Mar last Summer.  Mr. Itkins has finished in the Trifecta four of the five times that he has competed on this track during daylight hours.

Hawk's Eyes (Brz) goes second off the layoff for Trainer Lorenzo Ruiz, has does quite well with such (in a limited sample).  Hawk's Eyes also gains the services of Jockey Tiago Pereira, who has been having a quality meet.

Bound for Heaven has been in the Exacta four of the five times that he has competed on this track with the lights off.  Crazy Al could benefit from losing the hood.

RACE 8 - Clm $10k N1X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Dustin's Passion (ML 5-2)
# 4 Valentine Boy (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 8 Deputy's Command (ML 5-1)

C's

# 2 Macho Sox (ML 12-1)
# 6 Warren's Rail Bird (ML 8-1)
# 10 No Surrender (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 3 The Gold Monkey (ML 5-1), but don't bring in # 11 Bluegrass Reward (ML 6-1) off the Also Eligible list, as that one will not run either.

As with Race 7 above, the "X" in the race description above should probably be a "Y", as the conditions limit this contest to those which have not won a race in 2016, excluding Maiden, Claiming, and Starter Races for $8k or less.

Dustin's Passion has finished in the Trifecta each of the four times in his career that he has competed at this distance.  Valentine Boy took the Show against non-conditioned claimers in each of his last two starts around two turns.  Deputy's Command could be the one running best late in this contest.

Macho Sox defeated N1X Allowance company in New Mexico two starts back, and is one for three in his career over this track during the daytime.  Warren's Rail Bird was victorious over this track last Summer when going from two sprints to a route.  No Surrender took the Show against non-conditioned claimers last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,6 with 5 with 9 with 1,4 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 3,5,7,8 with 1,7,9 with 1,4,8 $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,5,7 with 5 with 9 with 1,4 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 5 with 3,4,8 with 1,4 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 5 with 9 with 2,6,10 $3.00

Total: $52.00

Post Time for Race 5 is 6:58 EDT / 3:58 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/24/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 3 Commander Lute (Final Odds 1.40*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 4 Star of Munster (4.00) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Surfside - # 2 Uptown Twirl (4.60) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 7 Indygo Holiday (17.10) - "C" Selection

# 4 Broadway Nika (7.30) was certainly game in the finale, leading the field after six furlongs, and then battling Indygo Holiday in the stretch to the wire, even after being bumped by the eventual winner as he bore in; but it wasn't quite enough, neither the battling nor (in the opinion of the stewards, after an inquiry) the bumping.  So, for the second time this weekend, our big ticket holds three winners and one Place finisher; which means that we again contribute, instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 4 Broadway Nika (7.30) - $398.50 Finish: 2nd
# 5 Pulmarack (4.30) - $307.90 Finish: 4th
# 8 City State (2.30) - $214.55 Finish: 7th

But such was not to be.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  3 / 4 / 2 / 7  were rewarded with a payout of $734.30 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/24/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

It's the middle Sunday of the three weekend Los Al Thoroughbred Spring meet, and The Surfside is the featured race.  And that's all I've got as far as an introduction, so let's get to it as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 6 - Clm $12.5k N2L - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Commander Lute (Morning Line 8-5)
# 5 Line of Doom (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 2 Litigation Road (ML 10-1)
# 6 Gato Pimiento (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Italian Mirage (ML 20-1)
# 4 He's a Real Keeper (ML 9-5)

Commander Lute has done most of his best racing in Washington and Oregon; but he showed good early speed last time out in his return to California while racing above his conditions.  Line of Doom graduated in his only prior try on this track, and drops today to a more realistic class level.

Litigation Road makes his second start off an extended layoff; it's fair to say that he needed his last race.  If Litigation Road can return to the form that he showed in 2015, then he can win today.  Gato Pimiento was within two lengths of the winner at the wire at this class level two starts back.

He's a Real Keeper has managed to miss the Winner's Circle in twenty-seven of his twenty-eight career starts; but He's a Real Keeper has finished in the Trifecta in all three of his starts on this track, and he could be the only one still running at the end.  Italian Mirage is on the ticket because I won't use "ALL but one" in any leg of a multi-race wager.

RACE 7 - (F) Clm $50k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Nine Point Nine (ML 9-2)

B’s

# 1 Ok Doll (ML 7-2)
# 4 Star of Munster (ML 4-1)

C's

# 2 Spicy Blonde (ML 8-1)
# 5 Sooner Time (ML 3-1)

Nine Point Nine was victorious at this class level the last time that she competed on dirt, two starts back.  Ok Doll drops into a more realistic class level after showing good early speed last time out against more expensive stock.

Star of Munster has shown  the ability to win at this approximate class level.  Spicy Blonde graduated last time out in her first start on a fast dirt track; perhaps dirt is her preferred surface.  Sooner Time has proven to be competitive at this class level.

RACE 7 - (F) The Surfside $75k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Code Warrior (ML 4-1)

B's

# 1 Surfside Tiara (ML 8-5)
# 2 Uptown Twirl (ML 3-1)

C's

# 3 My Dynamo (ML 6-1)
# 5 Moment Is Right (ML 5-2)

Code Warrior's form looks much better when you eliminate her tries around two turns.  Surfside Tiara may need a race before she's back in top form; but she may not need top form to win today.  Uptown Twirl should improve with the return to dirt.

Moment Is Right, winner of last year's Astoria Stakes at Belmont Park, will lose the blinkers for her California debut.  My Dynamo is on the ticket because I won't use "ALL but one" in any leg of a multi-race wager.

RACE 9 - [S] OC 20k/N$Y - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 City State (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 4 Broadway Nika (ML 8-1)
# 5 Pulmarack (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Zip the Monkey (ML 3-1)
# 2 Hunted Guy (ML 8-1)
# 7 Indygo Holiday (ML 12-1)

City State took the Place at this class level two starts back, and defeated open company at today's distance on this track last time out.  Broadway Nika won by open lengths against open company last time out.  Pulmarack is stakes placed versus state bred company.

Zip the Monkey took the Place at this class level two starts back.  Hunted Guy has won half of his six career starts on a fast dirt track, and more than half of his overall career seventeen starts; so he knows how to find the Winner's Circle.  Indygo Holiday graduated last time out; Trainer Sean McCarthy tends to do well when placing his last out winners.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,5 with 3 with 4 with 8 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,5,6 with 1,3,4 with 1,2,4 with 4,5,8 $54.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,4 with 3 with 4 with 8 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 3,5 with 2,5 with 4 with 8 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 3,5 with 3 with 3,5 with 8 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 3,5 with 3 with 4 with 1,2,7 $3.00

Total: $64.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:28 EDT / 4:28 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/23/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 3 Sivali (Final Odds 7.50) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 5 Changing Karma (8.50) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Great Lady M - # 7 Finest City (8.80) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 10 Secret Chords (0.40*) - "A" Selection

my single in The Great Lady M, # 2 Fantastic Style (0.50*), was leading at the top of the stretch when she got hooked in the middle of the drive by # 3 Lost Bus (8.80); but Fantastic Style was game, battling Lost Bus from that point forward until the Finish Line, where Fantastic Style hit the wire a head in front of that rival.  Too bad it was all for naught, as Finest City had blown passed both of them, crossing the wire a length and a quarter in front of that pair in the process of setting a new track record.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  3 / 5 / 7 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $1,163.00 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/23/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

“In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein

The featured race Saturday at Los Alamitos is the Grade 2 Great Lady M Stakes, an event which for the past couple of decades had been held in the early summer, sometime between late June and mid July.  Indeed, you have to go back to 1997, back when this race was known as The A Gleam Handicap and run on the dirt at Hollywood Park, for the last time that this event took place in April (Trivia Question: Which horse won The A Gleam Handicap back on April 26, 1997?  Answer below).  We'll be taking a look at The Great Lady M Stakes below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 6 - Md $30k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Captain Akers (Morning Line 2-1)

B's

# 1 Asian Sun (ML 4-1)
# 2 My Son John (ML 8-1)
# 3 Sivali (ML 4-1)

# 7 Jason X L (ML 5-2)

C's

None

Captain Akers took the Place at this class level last time out.  The concern with Captain Akers is that he has lost ground in the stretch in each of his nine prior career races; which is the reason why we're spreading a bit wide in this leg.

Asian Sun drops in for a tag for the first time while moving from state bred restricted to open company.  So it's not much of a drop; but it is a step down the class ladder.  My Son John runs back fresh and cuts back to just one turn racing; his first one turn contest since his debut over this track last December.  Will it help?  Can't hurt.

Sivali took the Place at this class level last time out.  Jason X L adds the hood for his second career start; a move with which Trainer Peter Eurton tends to do well.

RACE 7 - Clm $6.25k N1X - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Saint Adalbert (ML 6-5)

B’s

# 3 Cold Bay (ML 12-1)
# 5 Changing Karma (ML 10-1)
# 6 Preacher's Bluff (ML 5-2)

C's

# 9 Znelle (ML 20-1)

Scratch # 7 Soul Crusher (ML 6-1).

The "X" in the race description above should probably be a "Y", as the conditions limit this contest to those which have not won a race in 2016, excluding Maiden, Claiming, and Starter Races for $5k or less.

Saint Adalbert has finished in the Trifecta in each of his last two races, both against more expensive stock upstate.  The concern is that neither of those contests were run on real dirt; one being on the turf while the other was on the synthetic.  However, Saint Adalbert has won on the dirt previously, so he should keep his form even with the surface change.

Cold Bay took the Place against more expensive over this track back in December.  Cold Bay also had a fine work over this track last Saturday.  Changing Karma goes first off the claim for Trainer Kelly Castaneda, who tends to do well with such.

Preacher's Bluff was a winner at this class level the last time that he competed on a fast dirt track.  Znelle has had success in the past when competing on this track in the daylight.

RACE 8 - (F) The Great Lady M (Grade 2) - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Fantastic Style (ML 7-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Thirteen Arrows (ML 12-1)
# 3 Lost Bus (ML 7-2)
# 5 Ben's Duchess (ML 4-1)

Fantastic Style, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, won the Grade 3 Las Flores last time out, as well as the 2015 running of this event.

Thirteen Arrows. one of three here trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, looks to be the quickest in this field; so despite starting on the rail, Jockey Martin Garcia could have his choice of lanes.  Lost Bus won the Grade 2 Santa Monica two starts back.  Ben's Duchess took the Place behind Fantastic Style in the Las Flores last time out, and had a nice work over this track on Monday.

RACE 9 - (F) Clm $6.25k N2X - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 10 Secret Chords (ML 8-5)

B’s

# 1 Gracee Hunny (ML 6-1)
# 2 Thames Valley (ML 9-2)
# 6 One Bye Two (ML 15-1)

# 4 Easter Lillian (ML 7-2)

Unlike Race 7 above, the "X" in the race description is here used in the more traditional sense of referring to career Wins, while also excluding Maiden, Claiming, and Starter Races for $5k or less.

Secret Chords defeated more expensive stock over this track last time out.  Gracee Hunny has finished in the Trifecta all three times that she's competed over this track during daylight hours.

Thames Valley has been showing a steadily improving form while winning three straight over this track under the lights.  If One Bye Two can return to the form that she showed last Fall, she could win by the length of the stretch.  Easter Lillian was victorious the last time that she competed on a fast dirt track, albeit against cheaper stock.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4 with 2 with 2 with 10 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,3,4,7 with 2,3,5,6 with 2 with 1,2,6,10 $40.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4 with 9 with 2 with 10 $0.50
$0.50 P4: 4 with 2 with 1,3,5 with 10 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 4 with 2 with 2 with 4 $0.50

Total: $43.50

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:28 EDT / 4:28 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Answer to Trivia Question above: The 1997 A Gleam Handicap was won by Toga Toga Toga, trained by Eduardo Inda, ridden by Gary Stevens.

4/21/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - # 1 Espirito Bueno (Final Odds 1.50*) - "B" Selection
Race 6 - # 6 Lily (1.10*) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 3 Justin Squared (2.00*) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - # 5 Runaway Wildcat (16.00) - "C" Selection

Okaad (3.10) was certainly game in the finale, charging hard through the stretch only to fall a neck short of victory.  And that neck was the difference between us cashing or trashing our tickets, as we had all three of the other winners on our big ticket.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 4 Jonny’s Choice (1.10*) - $74.70 Finish: 5th
# 6 Okaad (3.10) - $144.45 Finish: 2nd

But such was not to be.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  1 / 6 / 3 / 5  were rewarded with a payout of $677.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/21/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

Found myself with some spare time today, so decided to have a little mid-week fun by taking another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 5 - Clm $8k N2L - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Templar (Morning Line 2-1)

B’s

# 1 Espirito Bueno (ML 5-1)
# 3 Dance the Waltz (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 Ebony Gold (ML 3-1)
# 5 Senor Pegasus (ML 10-1)
# 6 Outthink 'em (ML 5-2)

Templar drops in class while cutting back in distance; either of those moves should be sufficient to spark an improvement; the combination just might land Templar in the Winner's Circle.

Espirito Bueno showed good early speed against more expensive last time out after spending a year and a half on the sidelines.  Dance the Waltz returns to daylight racing after graduating here under the lights last time out.  Ebony Gold, Senor Pegasus, and Outthink 'em have a combined career record of three Wins in seventy-six starts; but someone has to win this race.

RACE 6 - (F) MSW - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Caradini (ML 3-1)

B's

# 2 Crayon (ML 6-1)
# 5 Goodlookinwife (ML 4-1)
# 6 Lily (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Holiday Movie (ML 7-2)
# 4 Gust (ML 5-1)

Caradini took the Place at this class level last time out.  Caradini's form looks much better once you toss the one turn efforts as well as the two back start where they made her wear the hood.

Crayon and Goodlookinwife go from turf to dirt for trainers (John Shirreffs and Phil D'Amato, respectively) who tend to do well when making that move.  Lily took the Show at this class level last time out.

Holiday Movie may take a less scenic route around the track than she did in her debut last time out.  Gust ran best two starts back when she had the price tag on her head; but it could be that she just didn't like being on the lawn last time out.

RACE 7 - OC 40k/N$Y - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Seventh Sense (Tur) (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 1 Roy H (ML 5-1)
# 3 Justin Squared (ML 9-2)
# 7 American Pride (ML 5-1)

C's

# 10 Gutsy Ruler (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 5 One More Roll (ML 15-1) and # 9 Dead Easy (No Line).

Seventh Sense (Tur). trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, graduated last time out in his second career start after having disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in his debut.  Roy H missed by just a head at this approximate class level last time out, after leaving the gate as the betting Favorite.

Justin Squared and American Pride are a pair trained by Bob Baffert, whose runners seem to excel at disappointing when competing at this track.  Gutsy Ruler moves up in class to open company after enjoying some success against state bred competition.

RACE 8 - Clm $10k N1X - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Jonny's Choice (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 6 Okaad (ML 7-2)

C's

# 3 Tripski (ML 3-1)
# 5 Runaway Wildcat (ML 12-1)
# 9 Hope 'n Pray (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 1 Pulla Train (ML 9-2) and # 2 Changing Karma (ML 20-1)

The "X" in the conditions limit this contest to those have yet to visit the Winner's Circle in 2016, not counting Maiden, Claiming, and Starter races for $8k or less.

Jonny's Choice gets some much needed class relief after defeating more expensive stock three starts back.  Okaad returns to the barn of Trainer Paul Aguirre, for whom he won twice in six starts during the previous Fall and Winter.

Tripski returns to dirt and a more realistic class level.  Runaway Wildcat won under the lights last time out in his return from an extended layoff.  Hope n' Pray has finished in the Trifecta in half of his career starts on a fast dirt track.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2 with 3 with 2 with 4 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,3 with 2,3,5,6 with 1,2,3,7 with 4,6 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4,5,6 with 3 with 2 with 4 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 2 with 1,4 with 2 with 4 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 2 with 3 with 10 with 4 $0.50
$0.50 P4: 2 with 3 with 2 with 3,5,9 $1.50

Total: $53.50

Post Time for Race 5 is 6:58 EDT / 3:58 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/17/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - # 1 Westbrook (Final Odds 9.50) - No Selection
Race 6 - # 1 Moments Notiz (5.50) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 7 Second Summer (3.00) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - # 5 Destroyer Escort (0.90*) - "A" Selection

Having identified the one experienced runner in the opening leg, # 4 Horsty (17.90) as a non-contender, I focused on the first time starters, using four of the five debuters on our tickets.  Needless to say, it was the first time starter that wasn't on our tickets that crossed the finish line first in Race 5.  But I can't be to hard on myself here, because if I had used Westbrook it would have been (as with # 5 Dynamic Scoring (23.20) and # 6 He's a Knockout (15.20)) as a "C" Selection; which would have just left us where we've been so many times before: with all the winners, but not all on any one ticket.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  1 / 1 / 7 / 5  were rewarded with a payout of $643.00 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/17/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

The field for Sunday's featured race at Los Alamitos Race Course contains an Illinois Derby winner as well as an Illinois Derby runner up.  They're both trained by Bob Baffert, and they'll both be making their LRC debut.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 5 - MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Accelerate (Morning Line 8-5)
# 3 Arrogate (ML 6-5)

B's

None

C's

# 5 Dynamic Scoring (ML 10-1)
# 6 He's a Knockout (ML 12-1)

Accelerate and Arrogate are a pair of first time starters whose trainers (John Sadler and Bob Baffert, respectively) tend to do well when sending out debut runners.  Accelerate and Arrogate are also by a pair of sires (Lookin At Lucky and Unbridled's Song, respectively) whose offspring tend to do well at first asking.

Dynamic Scoring and He's a Knockout are another pair of first time starters who (in my opinion) do not rate as highly as our "A" Selections, but deserve consideration based upon their respective breeding and the way that they've been working towards this contest.

RACE 6 - Alw 25000s - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Giant Ego (ML 2-1)

B’s

# 1 Moments Notiz (ML 5-1)
# 2 Pray Hard (ML 3-1)
# 4 My Secret Affair (ML 6-1)
# 5 Too Fast to Pass (ML 5-2)

C's

# 6 Swiss Minister (ML 10-1)

Note that there's no lifetime Win restrictions to being a part of this field.  The conditions state that this contest is open to all three year olds and upward that have started for a claiming price of $25k either this year or last, and since that race have not won a claiming, starter, or optional claiming race exceeding $25k.

Giant Ego goes first off the claim for Trainer Kristin Mulhall after defeating $20k Claimers at Santa Anita last time out by as many as he wanted.  Moments Notiz goes first off the claim for Trainer Bill Spawr, who wins with over a third of such.

Pray Hard goes first off the claim for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.  My Secret Affair and Pray Hard filled out the Exacta at this class level in the only prior race for each runner over this track.

Too Fast to Pass has finished in the Exacta five of the six times that he has competed at today's distance.  Swiss Minister is on the ticket because I won't use "ALL but one" in any one leg of a multi-race wager.

RACE 7 - OC 62k/N$Y - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Whisky Ticket (ML 9-5)

B’s

# 2 Just Kidding (ML 3-1)
# 6 Midnight Hawk (ML 6-1)
# 7 Second Summer (ML 4-1)

C's

None

Whisky Ticket, winner of last year's Illinois Derby, goes second off the layoff for Trainer Bob Baffert.  Whisky Ticket missed by just a head at this approximate class level last time out.

Just Kidding has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in four of his last five starts.  Midnight Hawk, the "other" Baffert, multi-times Graded Stakes placed, makes his third start of 2016 after spending most of last year on the bench.  Second Summer has been been showing steady improvement since keeping off the grass, and could be the one running best late.

RACE 8 - (F) Md $20k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Destroyer Escort (ML 5-2)

B's

# 3 Saratoga's Excess (ML 20-1)

C's

# 4 Charlie My Love (ML 3-1)
# 6 Warren's Super Cat (ML 5-1)

Scratch # 1 Lookinforadanger (ML 2-1)

Destroyer Escort hops all the way down the class ladder after spending nearly a year on the bench.  Yeah, that's usually a pretty big red flag; but Trainer Eric Kruljac tends to do well with those returning from an extended layoff, and a repeat of either of her two prior career efforts would probably be enough to get Destroyer Escort into the Winner's Circle today.

Saratoga's Excess showed good early speed in each of her two prior starts.  Charlie My Love took the Show against more expensive in her debut two starts back.  Warren's Super Cat missed by just a length at this class level two starts back.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2,3 with 3 with 3 with 5 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3 with 1,2,3,4,5 with 2,3,6,7 with 3,5 $40.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 5,6 with 3 with 3 with 5 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 2,3 with 6 with 3 with 5 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 2,3 with 3 with 3 with 4,6 $2.00

Total: $46.00

Post Time for Race 5 is 6:58 EDT / 3:58 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/16/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - The Los Angeles - # 6 San Onofre (Final Odds 2.70) - "C" Selection
Race 6 - # 7 Deputy Dane (1.30*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - The Bertrando - # 4 Boozer (3.00) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - # 8 Sheswildnfree (1.50*) - "A" Selection

After winning the Grade 3 Midnight Lute back in January, San Onofre lost his next two races by a combined margin of over seventeen lengths.  For that reason, I felt that San Onofre, while capable of winning, was not in sufficient form to be included on our big ticket.  And that decision, combined with # 7 Soi Phet's (1.50*) inability to get past Boozer in the stretch of The Bertrando, made this a day for us to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  6 / 7 / 4 / 8  were rewarded with a payout of $71.00 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/16/16 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

It's the first Saturday of the "We need to rest the grass at Santa Anita" meet at Los Alamitos, and they're running the transplanted Grade 3 Los Angles as the featured race.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take a run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 5 - The Los Angeles (Grade 3) - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Wild Dude (Morning Line 2-1)

B's

# 2 Yiannis (ML 7-2)
# 5 Raised a Secret (ML 3-1)

C's

# 4 Sir Kip (ML 20-1)
# 6 San Onofre (ML 7-2)

Scratch # 1 W. Giles (ML 9-2)

Wild Dude, the classiest runner in this field, goes second off the layoff for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who does quite well with such.  Raised a Secret and Yiannis took the Place and Show, respectively, last time out in a $75k Optional Claimer at Santa Anita.  A repeat of that effort by either runner could be good enough to land him in the Winner's Circle today.

San Onofre won the Grade 3 Midnight Lute back in January, so he fits on class; but the concern is the diminishing returns San Onofre has experienced since that contest.  Sir Kip is on the ticket because I refuse to use "ALL But One" in any leg of a multi-race wager.

RACE 6 - [S] Md $50k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Starship Samurai (ML 2-1)
# 5 Jet Seeker (ML 10-1)
# 7 Deputy Dane (ML 9-5)

B's

None

C's

None

Starship Samurai drops in for a tag for the first time in his career.  Starship Samurai took the Show against non-claiming state bred maidens two starts back.

Jet Seeker returns to competition after spending over a year on the bench.  Jet Seeker showed good early speed in his debut last time out, and has been working well over this track for this contest.  Deputy Dane goes third off the layoff for Trainer Phil D'Amato.

RACE 7 - [S] The Bertrando $100k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Soi Phet (ML 2-1)

B's

# 1 Avanti Bello (ML 3-1)
# 4 Boozer (ML 5-2)

C's

# 3 Awesome Return (ML 5-1)
# 5 Poshsky (ML 8-1)
# 6 Neveradoubt (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 2 Zip the Monkey (ML 15-1)

Soi Phet and Avanti Bello are the only runners in this field with multiple lifetime Wins on a fast dirt track.  I give the edge to Soi Phet as he is the only runner in this field to have previously won at this track.

Boozer, Awesome Return, and Poshsky are all better suited to the grass; but any of the three could win today if they can carry their form over to the dirt track.  I give an edge to Boozer based upon his early speed, which might allow him to steal this one on the front end.  Neveradoubt is on the ticket because, like with Sir Kip in Race 5, I refuse to use "ALL But One" in any leg of a multi-race wager.

RACE 8 - (F) Md $20k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Sheswildnfree (ML 5-2)

B's

# 2 Blue Chat (ML 9-5)
# 3 Lob City (ML 2-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 7 Jacque (ML 30-1)

Sheswildnfree missed by just a neck at this class level last time out.  Blue Chat drops a rung on the class ladder after taking the Place against more expensive last time out.  Lob City has finished in the Trifecta in each of her four career starts where she ran with a price tag on her head.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3 with 3,5,7 with 7 with 8 $3.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,5 with 3,5,7 with 1,4,7 with 2,3,8 $40.50

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4,6 with 3,5,7 with 7 with 8 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3 with 3,5,7 with 3,5,6 with 8 $4.50

Total: $51.00

Post Time for Race 5 is 6:58 EDT / 3:58 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/10/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 8 - The San Juan Capistrano - # 8 Quick Casablanca (Chi) (Final Odds 1.90*) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 Shh She's Ours (1.40*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 4 Chromium (15.70) - No Selection
Race 11 - # 4 Seattle Salt (6.90) - "B" Selection

We used them all in one form or another in the opening leg just to see the Post Time Favorite break his two year losing streak and win by daylight.  Meanwhile, despite using half the field in one form or another in the third leg, we had absolutely no part of the winner there.  So today was certainly not one of our better days of handicapping.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  8 / 4 / 4 / 4  were rewarded with a payout of $1,323.35 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/10/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

It's the final day of The Winter/Spring Meet at Santa Anita, with the Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano highlighting the card (though, as you'll see below, they changed it up a bit due to the weather).  So until they come back to town in May, we'll take one last run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 8 - The San Juan Capistrano (Grade 3) - Fifteen Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Cardiac (Morning Line 20-1)
# 6 Generosidade (Uru) (ML 4-1)

B's

# 3 Energia Fribby (Brz) (ML 4-1)
# 4 Kenjisstorm (ML 8-1)
# 8 Quick Casablanca (Chi) (ML 7-2)

C's

# 9 Life's Journey (ML 20-1)
# 10 Generoso (Uru) (ML 20-1)

Scratch # 1 A Red Tie Day (ML 6-1); # 5 Bourbon Soul (ML 6-1); and # 7 Blingo (ML 6-1).

Note the change in distance above from the more customary fourteen furlongs for this event.  Due to the wet weather in SoCal, rather than charge down the hill and then circling the course, the runners will confine themselves to the flats, with an added furlong tossed in.

Generosidade (Uru), Quick Casablanca (Chi), and Energia Fribby (Brz) formed the Trifecta in last month's running of the Grade 2 San Luis Rey.  Generosidade took a big step forward in winning last time out; so it would not surprise if she was to regress off that effort.  Quick Casablanca looks well meant here; but caution is always advised when looking at a runner with an eleven race losing streak who hasn't seen the Winner's Circle in nearly two years.  Energia Fribby could step up; but if so, then you have to wonder why he didn't last time out.

Cardiac and Kenjisstorm are the only two runners in here with any speed; so it's possible one of them gets loose and puts the others to sleep (and I think that one could be Cardiac).  Life's Journey and Generoso (Uru) are on the ticket because this looks like a race where pretty much anything can happen.

RACE 9 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 My Fiona (ML 8-1)
# 4 Shh She's Ours (ML 4-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 6 Back Beauty (ML 6-1)
# 7 Discatsonthesquare (ML 6-1)
# 9 Conquest Flatterme (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 3 Calm the Sea (ML 5-2).

My Fiona has taken the Show in each of her last two starts at this class level.  Shh She's Ours moves up the class ladder after winning easily last time out.  Back Beauty tired after doing all the heavy lifting last time out; perhaps she'll improve with the reduction in distance.

Discatsonthesquare returns from an extended vacation after having hit the board at this class level in each of her last four starts.  Conquest Flatterme lost all chance last time when she bobbled at the break, after having finished in the Trifecta at this class level in her two starts prior to that.

RACE 10 - Clm $12.5k N2L - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Where's Bubba (ML 7-2)
# 12 Inexcess Time (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 3 Rolo Tamaci (ML 3-1)

C's

# 10 Blue Law (ML 4-1)
# 11 Boompa (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 5 Coyote Fly (No Line); # 8 Peach Arch (NL); and # 13 Ladies Man (NL).

Where's Bubba missed by half a length at this class level last time out, and may prefer the shortened distance.  Inexcess Time disappointed as the Post Time Favorite at this class level last time out, but now goes first off the claim for Trainer Robertino Diodoro, who does well with such.

Rolo Tamaci missed by half a length at this class level last time out, but may not appreciate the cut back in distance.  Blue Law drops down to a more realistic class level.  Boompa missed by just a neck at this class level last time out; but that was back in October, and Boompa's work tab suggests that he may need a race.

RACE 11 - [S] (F) Md $50k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Watch Me Now (ML 5-2)

B's

# 2 Stylistic (ML 3-1)
# 4 Seattle Salt (ML 8-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 1 Golden Squeeze (NL); # 5 Don't Tell Judy (ML 6-1); # 9 Wondrous Cat (ML 4-1); # 10 She's Moja (ML 30-1).

Watch Me Now took the Show at this class level two starts back, and just didn't belong against non-claiming maidens last time out.  Stylistic drops in for a tag for the time, as well as competing on dirt for the first time.  Seattle Salt took the Show at this class level last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2,6 with 1,4 with 2,12 with 6 $8.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,4,6,8 with 1,4 with 2,3,12 with 2,4,6 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 9,10 with 1,4 with 2,12 with 6 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 2,6 with 6,7,9 with 2,12 with 6 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 2,6 with 1,4 with 10,11 with 6 $4.00

Total: $67.00

Post Time for Race 8 is 7:17 EDT / 4:17 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/10/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 9 - The Thunder Road - # 12 What a View (Final Odds 0.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - The Echo Eddie - # 2 Tough It Out (5.10) - "C" Selection
Race 11 - The Evening Jewel - # 4 Pacific Heat (1.20*) - "A" Selection
Race 12 - # 10 American Freedom (1.90) - "B" Selection

As sometimes happens, we had 'em all, but not all on any one ticket.  I felt that Tough It Out's inability to finish in the money in either of his two prior races around one turn was a valid enough reason to keep him off the big ticket; while American Freedom's status as a first time starter in a contest with runners who had previously hit the board precluded him from being considered a top contender in the finale.  Had we used Tough It Out as a "B" Selection, or American Freedom as an "A" Selection, we would have cashed today.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here is the $0.50 Will Pay for the runner to which we were alive in the finale:

# 4 Giant Expectations (1.70*) - $37.15 Finish: 3rd

But such was not to be.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  12 / 2 / 4 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $52.90 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/9/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

It's Santa Anita Derby Day Saturday, with plenty of stakes and plenty of rain in the forecast.  While neither the SA Derby nor Oaks will be a part of our play, we will still be looking at three stakes below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 9 - The Thunder Road $100k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 7 Twentytwentyvision (Morning Line 5-1)
# 12 What a View (ML 5-2)

B's

# 3 Si Sage (Fr) (ML 12-1)
# 6 Decisive Edge (ML 15-1)
# 8 Texas Red (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 2 McHeat (ML 20-1) and # 14 Ohio (Brz) (ML 4-1).  Bring in # 13 Play Hard to Get (ML 15-1) from the Also Eligible List.

As I type this, this contest is still on the grass; so that's how I'm going to analyze it, though I think we're still good even if this race gets moved to the main track.

Twentytwentyvision took the Place in the Grade 1 Eddie Read two starts back.  Twentytwentyvision has yet to finish out of the Trifecta in his eight race career, and Trainer Richard Mandella does just fine when bringing runners back from an extended vacation.  If this race is taken off the grass, Twentytwentyvision has previously won over this main track, and having Carson City as grand sire suggests that Twentytwentyvision would not be disadvantaged by an off track.

What a View, winner of the Grade 1 Kilroe Mile last time out, looks like he could be all alone up front in the early going of this contest, and may remain that way right on up to the wire.  Si Sage (Fr), winner of the Grade 3 Last Tycoon last time out, has been working well for this contest.

Decisive Edge has done well in the past when the turf has been softened.  Texas Red has the back class to compete here, though his turf pedigree credentials are less than solid.

RACE 10 - [S] The Eddie Echo $200k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Tough But Nice (ML 3-1)

B's

# 7 Gold Rush Dancer (ML 9-2)

C's

# 1 Demonslayer (ML 8-1)
# 2 Tough It Out (ML 4-1)
# 5 Brandofthebartender (ML 6-1)

Tough But Nice has visited the Winner's Circle each of the two times in his career that he has competed against state bred only company.  Gold Rush Dancer showed some nice early speed last time out before throwing in the towel against open stakes company.

Demonslayer wanted no part of two turns last time out, and should improve with the turn back in distance.  Tough It Out is stakes placed against state bred company, but may need more distance to perform at his peak.  Brandofthebartender has the breeding to handle a rain soaked track, and the addition of blinkers should see him more forwardly placed early.

RACE 11 - [S] (F) The Evening Jewel $200k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Pacific Heat (ML 9-5)

B's

# 1 Later My Love (ML 12-1)
# 5 Be a Lady (ML 4-1)

C's

# 8 Roo's Valentine (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 6 Run Like the Boss (ML 30-1).

Pacific Heat is a two time stakes winner against state bred company, and has been proven proficient regardless of conditions, be it turf or dirt, or sprint or route.

Later My Love should be speed on the rail, and may steal this one on the front end.  Be a Lady has been showing steady improvement while climbing the class ladder during her four race winning streak.  Roo's Valentine, winner of The Soviet Problem last year, shows a good work tab in preparation for this contest.

RACE 12 - MSW - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Giant Expectations (ML 5-2)

B's

# 10 American Freedom (ML 3-1)
# 11 Mucho Chrome (ML 8-1)

C's

# 7 Street to Indy (ML 12-1)
# 8 Brown's Baby Boy (ML 6-1)
# 9 The Lieutenant (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 1 Super Touch (ML 30-1).

Giant Expectations took the Place at this class level last time out.  American Freedom is a first time starter for Trainer Bob Baffert who shows a decent worktab, despite the gap between March 5 and March 28.  Mucho Chrome has finished in the Trifecta in each of his last two starts at this class level, and should be forwardly placed early.

Street to Indy, Brown's Baby Boy, and The Lieutenant are all second time starters who showed enough life in their debut and have enough wet track breeding in their pedigree to warrant consideration here.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 7,12 with 6 with 4 with 4 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,6,7,8,12 with 6,7 with 1,4,5 with 4,10,11 $45.00

4/3/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 6 Beach Patrol (Final Odds 1.90) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The Tokyo City Cup - # 1 Big John B (1.50*) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 10 Rocket Fuel (0.90*) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 5 So Sweetitiz (1.30*) - "A" Selection

Multi-race sequences don't come much more formful than the one above.  And while we had 'em all, we didn't have 'em to full advantage, as we considered only half of them to be "A" Selections.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other three runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 4 Pearl De Vere (5.30) - $63.35 Finish: 6th
# 9 Entrechat (5.90) - $86.15 Finish: 3rd
# 10 Queenofthepalace (NZ) (8.30) - $133.45 Finish: 4th

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct Pick Four sequence of  6 / 1 / 10 / 5  which paid $44.10 for a fifty cent wager.  As our investment was $64.00, we cash at a loss.  Which, while significantly preferable to not cashing at all, was not our goal when we placed our wagers.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

4/3/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Moving our action back downstate today, where the featured event is the Grade 2 mile and a half Tokyo City Cup.  That's Race 8 on the card, so we'll be looking at it below as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 7 - OC 80k/N1X - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Beach Patrol (Morning Line 5-2)
# 10 Arcature (ML 3-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 3 Undeniable U (ML 7-2)

Scratch # 1 Opportunistic (ML 8-1); # 2 Taima the Hawk (ML 30-1); # 4 Canada (ML 12-1); # 7 Marqula (ML 15-1); and # 8 Diplodocus (ML 8-1).

Beach Patrol graduated by as many as he wanted to last time out in his first start after switching to the Phil D'Amato barn.  Arcature was within two lengths of the winner at the wire in The Pasadena last time out.  Arcature will be adding blinkers today; runners for Trainer Simon Callaghan tend to do well when he makes that move.  Undeniable U is the only runner in this gutted field with a Win at today's trip.

RACE 8 - The Tokyo City Cup (Grade 3) - Twelve Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Class Leader (ML 7-2)
# 7 Lieutenant Colonel (ML 5-2)

B's

# 1 Big John B (ML 2-1)
# 5 China Girl Lover (ML 9-2)

C's

None

Class Leader gets some class relief along with what looks to be a pace scenario that will be kinder to closers.  Lieutenant Colonel has been showing steady improvement since moving to the West Coast and the barn of Jerry Hollendorfer.

Big John B is a Graded Stakes winner on the dirt at today's distance.  China Girl Lover has demonstrated in the past the ability to carry his form from the turf to the main track.

RACE 9 - [S] MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Worldwide (ML 3-1)

B's

# 9 Ree O Kerr (ML 8-1)
# 10 Rocket Fuel (ML 9-5)

C's

None

Scratch # 4 Snitched On You (ML 15-1) and # 8 Easter Morn (ML 10-1)

Worldwide has hit the board in each of his three career races, all at this class level.  Ree O Kerr ships in from upstate after taking the Place in his debut against open company non-claiming maidens.  Rocket Fuel took the Place in his debut last time out at this class level.

RACE 10 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 4 Pearl de Vere (ML 4-1)
# 5 So Sweetitiz (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 9 Entrechat (ML 5-1)
# 10 Queenofthepalace (NZ) (ML 8-1)

C's

# 7 Holograeme (ML 12-1)
# 11 Little Treasure (Ity) (ML 12-1)
# 12 Hundi (Ire) (ML 10-1)

Pearl de Vere won charging down the hill against classier foes two starts back.  So Sweetitiz took the Place in her first try charging down the hill last time out.  Entrechat took the Place charging down the hill against Allowance company two starts back.

Queenofthepalace (NZ) has taken the Show in each of her two prior tries down the hill.  Holograeme should appreciate the turn back in distance.

Little Treasure (Ity) took the Show charging down the hill last time out.  Hundi (Ire) took the Place at this class level charging down the hill back in January.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6,10 with 2,7 with 2 with 4,5 $8.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

Total: $64.00
