7/29/18 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 1 Roadster (Final Odd 0.80*) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 2 Poster Girl (GB) (17.80) - No Selection
Race 8 - The Fleet Treat - # 7 Just Grazed Me (3.20) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 2 Raven Creek (5.00) - "B" Selection

When you use every runner in the field just to watch the Morning Line / Post Time Favorite win for fun, as I did in Sunday's opening leg, then you know that your tickets were not optimally constructed.  Couple that with having too little respect for Just Grazed Me coming off an impressive debut victory, as well as showing no love at all for Poster Girl (GB), and you have the recipe for a day where your tickets will turn into trash.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  1 / 2 / 7 / 2  were rewarded with a payout of $1,351.00 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Three year old California bred fillies going as far you can on the main track while making just one turn; that's Sunday's featured race in Southern California.  I'll be taking a look at that contest below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

Parsimony took the Place at this class level last time out, with Jefe taking the Show behind him.  Parsimony has disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of his two career starts; not exactly the best way to begin a career; but the talent is clearly there, and Parsimony looks to be clearly best here.

Roadster is a first time starter trained by Bob Baffert, who tends to do well with such.  View Magic and Gunmetal Gray are both trained by Jerry Hollendorfer; and while I could end up looking very foolish after this race is run, I think View Magic, with the much higher Morning Line Odds, will run much better than his stablemate on Sunday; so Gunmetal Gray joins everyone else in the backup "C" Selection pile.

Cheekaboo missed victory by just a neck at this class level last time out, and Cheekaboo has run well in the past over this turf course.  Painting Corners could improve with the stretch out.  The Tulip (Ire) has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of her last three starts.  Causeway Carolyn is two-for-twenty-six lifetime, but one-for-three over this turf course; so maybe Causeway Carolyn will exceed expectations today.

Indian Mantuana took the Show behind The Tulip last time out.  Quebec projects to be an early pace presence.  Miss Sugars (GB) could improve with the stretch out.

Loving Lynda, Spiced Perfection, and One Fast Broad filled out the Trifecta in the Melair last time out.  I gave the edge to Spiced Perfection in today's contest because I think she'll best handle the reduction in real estate.

If this contest was for either six or six and and a half furlongs, I would probably have made Show It N Moe It my "A" Selection.  But it seems that each time Show It N Moe It has had to go seven furlongs in the past she has thrown in a sub-par effort.  So while it may end up costing me today, I'll going to use Show It N Moe It as a backup "C" Selection, along with the rest of the field.

Six Point Race has run well over this turf course in the past.  Senator Robert could improve with the move back to the lawn.  Unpossible could move up with a return to the flats.  California Journey projects to be an early pace presence.

7/28/18 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - The California Dreamin' - # 7 Fly to Mars (Final Odds 4.60) - "C" Selection

Positives regarding Saturday's play include the decision to single Broome in the second leg on the big ticket, as well as the decision not to single # 4 Pee Wee Reese (2.10*) in the opening contest.  Unfortunately including Fly to Mars in the first leg on the big ticket was not among Saturday's positives, as I had the Peter Miller trained runner as a backup "C" Selection only; and for that reason, Saturday was a day to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Pee Wee Reese looks to be in top form, and if I was more courageous I would make the five year old horse a single here.  But I just couldn't pull the trigger on going solo in the opening turf contest; so onto the big ticket go B Squared, Well Developed, and Ashleyluvssugar, the runners who filled out the bottom three slots of the Superfecta  in the Crystal Water Stakes back in May at Santa Anita.

What a View got to the line a length in front of Pee Wee Reese in the 2017 running of the Crystal Water Stakes.  Grecian Fire could be vying with Ashleyluvssugar for the distinction of which entrant will be running best late Saturday.  Fly to Mars ran well enough in his last start for Trainer Peter Miller to suggest that he could handle the class rise here.

Roy H, trained by Peter Miller, returns to states after taking show in the Dubai Golden Shaheen back in March.  American Anthem, trained by Bob Baffert, crossed under the wire first in the Grade 2 San Carlos last time out, and could benefit from the reduction in real estate.

Ransom the Moon won last year's running of this contest by over a length in front of Roy H.  St. Joe Bay was just a head behind American Anthem at the line in the San Carlos last time out.  Edwards Going Left took the Show in the Grade 1 Triple Bend last time out.

Stallwalkin' Dude could improve going third off the layoff.  American Pastime had a sharp workout over this main track Sunday the 22nd.

More Ice took the Show behind Tariq last time out.  Ocean Fury could improve with a cleaner trip this go 'round.  Forloveofcountry took the Show at this class level in his debut last time out, and could move up with the shift to the lawn.

King of Speed could improve with the surface switch.  Biz Nasty is a first time starter who seems well bred for the turf.  Saltarin is trained by Victor Garcia, whose runners tend to show significant improvement in their second career start.

My original plan when writing up my play was to go "ALL" on the Eddie Read on the big ticket, and then single If You Like It in the nightcap.  But I didn't like the fact that If You Like It was just one-for-ten in her career on Fast dirt tracks entering Sunday's contest.  As I've written many times in the past, few things in this game will make you feel more foolish than using multiple runners in a single leg just to watch the Post Time Favorite win for fun; and the nightcap proved to be just one more example of that principle.  But all that is just a thought exercise as to what might have been; because no matter how I played the final three legs of the sequence I wasn't going to cash Sunday, because there was no way I was finding Double Touch (GB) in the Wickerr.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Big Score has finished in the Trifecta in each of his last four races since returning to the West Coast, and could benefit from the class relief.  Isotherm took the Show behind Belvoir Bay in the Grade 3 San Simeon two starts back.

Colonist missed victory in the Grade 3 American by just a neck two starts back.  Conquest Tsunami took the Place sprinting in the Grade 2 Jaipur last time out.  Bombard, Cistron, and Perfectly Majestic filled out the Trifecta in the Silent Lure last time out.

Hunt (Ire) won this event last year, and appears to be entering this contest in good form.  Next Shares was half a length behind Hunt in the Shoemaker Mile last time out.

Bowies Hero, winner of the Grade 1 Kilroe Mile two starts back, has run well in the past over this turf course.  Sharp Samurai missed by a length in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby of entering this contest with a six race winning streak.  Multiplier and Fashion Business (GB) are exiting the Grade 1 Manhattan, where they both finished well.

Itsinthepost (Fr) won the Grade 2 Charlie Whittingham by daylight last time out.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

7/21/18 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - The San Diego - # 1 Catalina Cruiser (Final Odds 1.30*) - "B" & "C" Selection*
Race 8 - The San Clemente - # 10 War Heroine (5.90) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 10 Rowayton (0.80*) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 8 Camino Song (Ire) (2.80*) - "A" Selection

* # 8 El Huerfano, a backup "C" Selection, was a late scratch from The San Diego, so I received Catalina Cruiser, the Post Time Favorite, in his place.

Few things will make you feel more foolish in this game than using several runners in a leg that winds up being won by the Post Time Favorite, as was the case in three of the four contests above.  Conversely, this game will make you feel smarter than you probably should those times that you leave the Post Time Favorite off your big ticket and still catch the winner, as I did in the San Clemente; as Post Time Favorite and backup "C" Selection # 2 Ms Bad Behavior (2.50*) could do no better than third.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other three runners to which I would have cashed in the nightcap:

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct Late Pick Four sequence of  1 / 10 / 10 / 8  which paid $100.20 for a fifty cent wager.  That makes for a profit of $19.70 on my initial $80.50 investment, or approximate odds of 0.24-1.  And while that sure ain't much, one thing you will never see me do here is turn my nose up at profit.

Opening weekend at Del Mar!  Sing it, Bing!




The good people at Del Mar have greatly expanded their wagering menu this Summer.  Among the changes is a doubling of the number of Pick Fours on the card, which is why you'll notice that there is a qualifier in the headline of today's post.  Saturday's card also features a pair of Graded Stakes, both of which are among the final four races to be run.  So with all that let's get to it, as I take a run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - The San Diego (Grade 2) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

To say that the entire complexion of this race changed with the scratch of Accelerate would be the understatement of the Summer.

Harlan Punch ships in from the east for Trainer David Jacobson after taking the Grade 3 Philip H Islen at Monmouth Park last time out.  Catalina Cruiser, stablemate of Accelerate for Trainer John Sadler, is undefeated in two career starts and could move up with the stretch out in distance.

Dr. Dorr, trained by Bob Baffert, took the Place in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita behind Accelerate two starts back.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

These are juveniles, with only two experienced runners (# 2 Pirate's Punch and # 7 Synthesis) in the field.

Synthesis has taken the Show at this class level in each of his two career starts.  Dueling and Rowayton are both trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, and both have been working well for their respective debuts.

Pirate's Punch didn't show much in his first try last time out; but the experience may help him improve this go round.  Frosted Grace had a nice work over this main track Monday.  Magnificent McCool and Truck Salesman are both trained by Doug O'Neill, who began this meet about as hot as any trainer possibly could.

Camino Song (Ire) has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of her last two turf starts.  Resolu closed well in her debut two starts back.  Innocent took the Place at this class level at Churchill Downs last time out, and took the Show at Keeneland in her turf start prior to that.  Party Dancer could improve off the freshening.

Dearborn ships in from the east, and could improve with the change in coasts.  Ten Count Out could improve going second off the year long layoff.  Amuse is a first time starter for Trainer Richard Mandella, and is well bred for the grass.  Take a Leap closed well enough in her debut last time out to suggest that she could handle the class rise.

7/15/18 Sacramento Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - # 5 Dancing Harbor (Final Odds 4.80) - "B" Selection
Race 6 - # 6 Jens de Ville (4.10) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 6 Shylock Eddie (0.70*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 7 Lucky Outcome (1.20*) - "A" Selection

While having the Post Time Favorite win the nightcap wasn't exactly the lucky outcome that I was hoping for, the fact that the play was salvaged from total defeat by just a neck and a head in the middle two legs means that I have little to complain about (it's worth noting that Dancing Harbor's victory in the opening leg was also by just a neck; but the Place finisher in that contest was backup "C" Selection # 4 Oh Jerry (6.20), so the play would still have cashed even if that result was reversed).

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other five runners to which I would have cashed in the nightcap:

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct Late Pick Four sequence of  5 / 6 / 6 / 7  which paid $60.45 for a fifty cent wager.  Since my initial investment was $80, I cash at a loss of nineteen dollars and fifty-five cents; and while that certainly beats not cashing at all, it definitely wasn’t what I had in mind when I placed my wagers.

It's day two of a two day weekend; and, seriously, I have absolutely nothing by way of introduction.  So let's just get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at Sacramento.

El Chavo Del Ocho returns after an extended vacation, and goes first time for the barn of Trainer Jonathan Wong, who tends to do well with both those angles.  Major Implications and Dancing Harbor were less than a length apart at the wire while filling out the bottom two rungs of the Trifecta last time out.

Union Rebel took the Place at this class level last time out.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

This contest is open to runners three years old and upward which have not won two races in 2018.  It's worth noting that in this field of seven, three of the runners are racing above their conditions.  # 2 On Fire (ML 8-1); # 3 Stocked (ML 6-1); and # 4 Yes I’m Wild (ML 10-1) have won zero races in 2018; meaning that they’re eligible to compete in races for horses which have not won any races in 2018 (for example, Clm $3.2k N1Y).  In fact, Stocked has only one Win in his career, meaning that he’s still eligible to compete in races with a N2L (non-winners of two lifetime) condition.

Now, sometimes things of this nature (having horses race above their conditions) are done by trainers as a favor to the racing secretary in order to get the race to go.  After all, if you take these three runners out of this contest you’re left with a field of four before scratches; which almost certainly means that the race would be dropped from the card.  And, of course, racing above their conditions does not mean that none of those three horses can win.  After all, lightweights have been known to occasionally defeat middleweights.  It’s just that there is rarely a compelling reason to take on a battle where the odds are stacked against you in this manner.

I mention all this to point out one of the reason why some trainers seem to visit the Winner’s Circle so much more frequently than others.  Yes, having better horses is the key component in that equation; but a lot of that is also that trainers with high Winning Percentages tend to put their runners in spots where they have a legitimate chance to compete, rather than needlessly forcing them to swim in the deep end of the pool.

Jens de Ville ran well over the dirt at Pleasanton while winning last time out.  He's a Tiger took the Place at this class level last time out.  Mesa Jones defeated open claimers with a more expensive price tag on their heads two starts back, albeit on the synthetic main track at Golden Gate.  Royal Alexei goes first off the claim for Trainer Quinn Howey, who tends to do well with such.

7/14/18 Sacramento Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 3 We Will Re Joyce (1.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 7 Courtship (3.10) - "B" Selection

As mentioned in the preview, Mirror Image was victorious in his only other try over this track; in retrospect, that should have been sufficient to warrant Mirror Image's inclusion on the big ticket.

Sill, the addition of Mirror Image by itself would not have been enough to keep the big ticket from becoming trash, as Nap Lajoie was not a part of my play; and, in retrospect, does not seem to have deserved to be a part of my play.  In his most recent start prior to Saturday, Nap Lajoie was defeated by less expensive stock; and in his two most recent tries on a Fast dirt track, Nap Lajoie had finished 8th and 7th, a combined fifty-nine lengths behind the winner.  It's difficult to imagine Nap Lajoie finding his way onto the big ticket under any scenario that does not involve the "ALL" button.

Oh well; onto the next race.

It's the final weekend of the Los Alamitos Thoroughbred Meet, along with their twice as expensive Late Pick Four; therefore my action these next two days can be found in Northern California, as the State Fair meet moves to the state capital.  So with that let's get to it, as I take a run at The Late Pick Four at Sacramento.

7/7/18 Oak Tree At Pleasanton Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 7 Daddysprize (Final Odds 0.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 3 Belligerent (3.10) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Everett Nevin - # 7 Luck's Royal Flush (9.70) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 Uncle Hal (3.40) - "B" Selection

Among the many features that handicapping shares with chess is that, even when you win, you could have done better.  Saturday, I could have done much better.

My initial inclination when putting my play together was to single Daddysprize on the big ticket ("All A and All B Selections") in the opening leg.  Instead, I chose to hedge and include # 3 La Waun (5.40) as well.  La Waun took the Show.

# 9 Excentra (11.20) in the second leg, originally intended to be a backup "C" Selection, was a late addition to the big ticket.  I thought Excentra could return to the form that she showed two starts back.  Instead Excentra did very little running, and finished 7th.

# 1 Ride Into the Sky (7.10) in the nightcap was another late addition to the big ticket.  This one was a tough call, for while Ride Into the Sky was dropping in for the lowest claiming price of his career, Ride Into the Sky really hadn't shown much in his four races since graduating back in April.  As it turned out Ride Into the Sky, who had broken well in each of his last three starts against more expensive stock, had no speed Saturday and finished fourth.

Of course, it's always going to be much easier to know which horses should be tossed after the race is run than it is prior to them crossing under the wire.  But the point is that, even when you win, there are still lessons to be learned.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other four runners to which I would have cashed in the nightcap:

7/4/18 Oak Tree At Pleasanton Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 6 Special Season (Final Odds 1.10*) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - # 1 Sir Vronski (2.80) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The Oak Tree Sprint - # 2 Annie's Candy (7.10) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 6 Acrimonius (2.10*) - "B" Selection

In the featured 8th race, my big ticket single, #3 My Friend Emma (0.80*) crossed under the wire first, well clear of Annie's Candy.  Unfortunately, My Friend Emma did so while riderless, having tossed Jockey Ricardo Gonzalez off his back shortly after the break (fortunately, Gonzalez popped right back up on his feet after the incident, and all indications are horse and rider are okay).  It was just one of those racing luck things that you can't do anything about, other than shrugging your shoulders and saying,

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  6 / 1 / 2 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $165.80 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

7/4/18 Oak Tree At Pleasanton Late Pick Four - Preview

Happy Birthday USA!  Here's hoping that all Americans, as well as all freedom-loving people everywhere throughout the world, spend the day enjoying life and liberty while pursuing happiness.  For me, the pursuit of happiness leads me to Wednesday's races at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, where the Oak Tree Sprint is the featured event on the card.  So with that let's get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at Oak Tree at Pleasanton.

RACE 6 - Clm $3.2k N2X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

Night's Watch has finished in the Trifecta six of the twelve times that he has raced over a Fast dirt track, and is the only entrant in the field with a victory while competing over real dirt.  Burger and Fries (Fr) was within a length of the winner at the wire last time out over this main track.

Capes Hot Rocket and Sojurn appear on paper to be over matched; but these two are a combined three-for-eleven lifetime, demonstrating an ability to find the Winner's Circle in relatively few tries; unlike many others here that seem to go all out to avoid getting their picture taken.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 7 - Clm $40k - Six Furlongs Dirt

Sir Vronski, winner of half of his eight career starts over a Fast Dirt track, misses by just a length of entering this contest with an eight race winning streak, going back to last Fall.  Awhitesportscoat took the show in the $50k Albany last time out, and could move up with the change of surface.

Awesome Anywhere has finished in the Exacta all three times that he has competed on a Fast dirt track.  Karma King, two lengths back of Sir Vronski at the wire last time out, goes first off the claim for Trainer Samuel Calvario, who tends to do well with such.  Pure Comedy has been a notch below a couple of these of late; perhaps that will change with the surface switch.

Pepperino took the Place against more expensive stock two starts back.  Acrimonious, Mon Camo, and Gold and Guns filled out the bottom three rungs of the Superfecta at this class level last time out.

Full Flask drops in for a tag for the first time.  Soul Obsession took the Place in his debut last time out.  Kona Breeze looks best on paper, but may be camera shy.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

7/1/18 Oak Tree At Pleasanton Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 1 The Spiral Jetter (Final Odds 2.90) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - # 2 Fullbridled Jet (7.70) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 3 Touched by Autism (3.80) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 Desert Express (2.80) - "A" Selection

And that's why you play backup tickets.

Actually, it might be more fitting to categorize today's victory as, "I'd rather be lucky than good."  My big ticket single, # 6 Smiling Ann (2.10*) showed little in the opening leg and finished fifth; while I got my "A" Selection home in the second leg, a leg which had confounded me so much that I went "ALL" on the big ticket.  Go figure.

For the record, here is the $0.50 Will Pay for the other runner to which I would have cashed in the nightcap (which was the Post Time Favorite due to my other "A" Selection, # 5 Moonlight Blue, being a late scratch):

# 7 Native Chieftain (2.30*) - $289.35 Finish: 4th

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct very easy to remember Late Pick Four sequence of  1 / 2 / 3 / 4  which paid $355.50 for a fifty cent wager.  That makes for a profit of $300.50 on my initial $55 investment, or approximate odds of 5.46-1.

7/1/18 Oak Tree At Pleasanton Late Pick Four - Preview

It's Sunday at the Alameda County Fairgrounds; and that's pretty much all I have today by way of introduction.  So let's just get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at Oak Tree at Pleasanton.

RACE 6 - (F) ALW N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A's

Smiling Ann won by enough last time out to suggest that she can handle the rise is class.  The Spiral Jetter fits well at this class level, and ran reasonably well last summer on the dirt at Del Mar.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else, as this field (typical of most first level Allowance races) contains more than a few runners who consistently hit the board at this class level while managing to avoid the Winner's Circle; suggesting that they have the talent to win, but often not the desire.

Fullbridled Jet could be the speed of the speed here.  Also note in the running lines how Fullbridled Jet's early speed has allowed her to be in front closer and closer to the wire in each successive race.  The "B" Selections are everyone else, as I go "ALL" on the big ticket for this leg.

RACE 8 - OC 62.5k/N2X - Eight and a Third Furlongs Dirt

Touched by Autism and Kitten's Royal, the only two last out winners in this field, both ran well enough to suggest that they can repeat.  Note also that Kitten's Royal is a career two-for-two over this track.

Saxon Lord, one-for-two in his career over this track, appears to be in top form.  More Power to Him has run well in the past over a Fast dirt track.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 9 - Clm $20k N2X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

Desert Express has run well over Fast dirt tracks in the past, including a Win in his only prior try over this track.  Moonlight Blue goes first off the claim for Trainer Billy Morey, who tends to do well with such.

Full Access ran well enough in victory last time out to suggest that he can handle the class rise.  Manila Mischief and Native Chieftain filled out the Exacta last time out while crossing under the wire just a nose apart.
