12/31/17 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 7 Little Bit Lovely (Final Odds 3.40) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 9 Tribal Dance (15.00) - No Selection
Race 8 - # 8 Bobby Abu Dhabi (4.70) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - The Blue Norther - # 10 Ippodamia's Girl (4.30) - "C" Selection

For the second day in a row no Post Time Favorites found their way to the Winner's Circle in any of the final four contests on the card.  As far as my play went, it began well enough; but my single in the second leg, # 3 Z Z Tiger (1.60*) finished out of the Superfecta, while the runners I had covered on the big ticket likewise failed to run to expectations (at least, to my expectations).

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  7 / 9 / 8 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $1,141.40 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/31/17 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

So it is that we reach the end of 2017, as this will be the final posted play prior to the new year.  Sticking with Santa Anita, the middle spot on the three day weekend has the $75k Blue Norther as its featured race; a contest for juvenile fillies going around two turns on some California grass.  I'll be looking at that event below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) Clm $25k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 7 Little Bit Lovely (Morning Line 9-2)

B’s

# 6 Arethusa (GB) (ML 8-1)
# 9 Scatterling (Ire) (ML 10-1)
# 10 Out Ofthe Ordinary (ML 8-1)
# 11 Winner's Dream (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Gift of a Star (ML 4-1)
# 2 Ryder's Starlight (ML 15-1)

# 8 Kennedie Sky (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 12 Salsita (ML 5-2) who does not draw in off the Also Eligible list

Little Bit Lovely fits well here on class, and could move up with the return to the turf.  Arethusa (GB) could improve with the class drop.  Scatterling (Ire) had no luck shipping upstate last time out, and is another that should benefit from being put back on the lawn.  Out Ofthe Ordinary should be quick enough to overcome the outside draw.  Winner's Dream looks to be on the wrong surface; but Winner's Dream does seem to fit here on class.

Gift of a Star crossed under the line ahead of Little Bit Lovely last time out; but that was on the dirt at Los Alamitos.  Ryder's Starlight took the Show at this class level charging down the hill three starts back.  Kennedie Sky could take this one if she can return to the form that she displayed this past Summer.

RACE 7 - (F) [S] MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Z Z Tiger (ML 5-2)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Judicial (ML 5-1)
# 7 Allie's Love (ML 12-1)
# 11 Inland Empire (ML 7-2)

Z Z Tiger has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of her two career starts.  Judicial ships in from Emerald Downs and moves to the barn of Trainer Mark Glatt.  Allie's Love took the Show behind Z Z Tiger in her debut last time out; perhaps the experience allows her to move up today.  Inland Empire is a first time starter that draws the services of Jockey Mike Smith.

RACE 8 - OC 62.5k/N2X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Adens Dream (ML 12-1)

B’s

# 2 Clear the Mine (ML 6-1)
# 4 Desert Law (ML 3-1)
# 5 Horse Greedy (ML 12-1)
# 6 Dr. Dorr (ML 9-2)
# 7 Aristocratic (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Lewys Vaporizer (ML 7-2)
# 8 Bobby Abu Dhabi (ML 6-1)

Adens Dream ships in from the Midwest where he has been competitive at this class level.  Adens Dream goes first time for the barn of Trainer Peter Miller, who tends to do well with such.

Clear the Mine goes first off the claim for Trainer Mark Glatt; perhaps the change of barn will allow Clear the Mine to make up the two plus lengths that he finished behind Desert Law last time out.  Desert Law is a lightly raced three year old who has been doing well climbing the class ladder.

Horse Greedy has been working lights out for his return to competition after a twelve month absence.  Dr. Dorr, trained by Bob Baffert, could be the on running best late.  Aristocratic took the Place at this class level last time out, and could benefit from the cut back in distance.  The "C's" are the rest of the field.

RACE 9 - (F) The Blue Norther $75k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Retro (ML 3-1)

B's

# 11 Multiplayer (ML 10-1)

C's

# 2 X S Gold (ML 20-1)
# 7 Silken Spy (ML 6-1)
# 9 One Fast Broad (ML 7-2)
# 10 Ippodamia's Girl (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 1 Treasuing (GB) (ML 7-2) and # 13 Mraseel (Ire) (ML 6-1).  Bring in # 12 Finess Bere (Fr) (ML 5-1) off the Also Eligible List.

Retro took the Show in the Surfer Girl over this turf course last time out.  Multiplayer picked off a Listed Stakes up at Golden Gate two starts back.

X S Gold, Silken Spy, and Ippodamia's Girl will each be facing winners for the first time; but each was also impressive enough in their respective graduations last time out to warrant consideration here.  One Fast Broad is coming off two stakes wins on the dirt after having finished fourth in the Surfer Girl; so why move One Fast Broad back to the grass?  One Fast Broad certainly fits here on class; but the surface switch is a puzzler.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 7 with 3 with 3 with 3 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 6,7,9,10,11 with 3 with 2,3,4,5,6,7 with 3,11 $30.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,2,8 with 3 with 3 with 3 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 7 with 1,7,11 with 3 with 3 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 7 with 3 with 1,8 with 3 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 3 with 3 with 2,7,9,10 $2.00

Total: $37.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:01 EST / 3:01 PST.  Good luck to all.

12/30/17 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 8 Donworth (Final Odds 3.20) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - The American Oaks - # 4 Daddys Lil Darling (2.00) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Midnight Lute - # 1 Silent Bird (3.10) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 11 Urban Bourbon (15.90) - "C" Selection

Had 'em all, but, well, not really.  Couldn't get any of my "A" Selections home Saturday; and seeing three "C" Selections make their way into the Winner's Circle means that I really didn't have a handle on the sequence.  On the positive end, I won just as much today as if I had taken it all and put it on my big ticket single to Win; as # 5 Americanize (1.10*) could do no better than third in the Grade 3 Midnight Lute.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  8 / 4 / 1 / 11  were rewarded with a payout of $937.80 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/30/17 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The card for the final Saturday of 2017 at Santa Anita features a trio of Graded Stakes, including the Grade 1 American Oaks.  I'll be taking a look at that contest below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - OC 40k/N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 9 Avanti Bello (Morning Line 10-1)

B’s

# 3 For Greater Glory (ML 6-1)
# 4 Camino de Estrella (ML 12-1)
# 5 Beaumarchais (ML 4-1)
# 10 Sheer Flatery (ML 3-1)

C's

# 6 Kristi's Copilot (ML 6-1)
# 8 Donworth (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 2 Just Kidding (ML 20-1)

Avanti Bello gets some significant class relief here, and should be quick enough to overcome the outside post.  For Greater Glory ships in from the east for Trainer David Jacobson, and could be the one running best late.

Camino de Estrella missed victory by just a head at this class level last time out.  Beaumarchais enters this contest with a four race winning streak.  Sheer Flatery has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of his last three outings.

Kristi's Copilot took the Show at this class level (albeit on the turf) last time out.  Donworth should be prominent early, and could get loose on the lead should Avanti Bello falter.

RACE 7 - (F) The American Oaks (Grade 1) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 9 New Money Honey (ML 7-2)

B's

# 1 Madam Dancealot (Ire) (ML 6-1)
# 4 Daddys Lil Darling (ML 3-1)

C's

# 3 Bernina Star (ML 30-1)
# 6 Beau Recall (Ire) (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 8 Rymska (Fr) (ML 5-2)

With the scratch of her stablemate Rymska (Fr), this becomes New Money Honey's race to win or lose.  If New Money Honey runs her race, she wins.  The concern is that New Money Honey didn't run her race last time out in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup.  Perhaps it was because New Money Honey doesn't care for the Keeneland grass; perhaps it was because of some other reason.  Therefore, I thought it best to spread here, and place Daddys Lil Darling and Madam Dancealot (Ire), the Place and Show finishers, respectively, in the aforementioned QE II Cup, on the big ticket with New Money Honey.

Bernina Star could improve with the move back to the grass, and Bernina Star's breeding suggests that the distance should not be a problem.  Beau Recall (Ire) could work out a nice stalking trip.

RACE 8 - The Midnight Lute (Grade 3) - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Americanize (ML 2-1)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Silent Bird (ML 5-2)
# 6 Solid Wager (ML 10-1)
# 7 Tough Sunday (ML 8-1)
# 8 Calculator (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 4 Masochistic (ML 5-2) and # 9 Smokey Image (ML 12-1)

Americanize should benefit from the cutback in distance and class.  If Americanize doesn't run to his true talent level, then this becomes a pretty wide open affair, with Tough Sunday and Calculator being the ones to look for early, while Silent Bird and Solid Wager should be the ones running best late.

RACE 9 - Clm $25k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Comes the Dream (ML 6-1)
# 13 Banze No Oeste (Brz) (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 4 Rye Patch (ML 4-1)
# 7 Orino (ML 8-1)
# 12 Lewis Vale (ML 7-2)
# 14 Conquest Sabre Cat (ML 9-2)

C's

# 2 Proud Piece (Ire) (ML 15-1)
# 11 Urban Bourbon (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 6 Fishel (ML 15-1) and 9 Gonna Fly Now (ML 15-1).  Bring in # 13 Banze No Oeste (Brz) and # 14 Conquest Sabre Cat off the Also Eligible List

Comes the Dream fits well on class in his return from a twelve month absence.  Banze No Oeste (Brz) was victorious at this class level last time out, as well as three starts back.  Rye Patch was a winner at this class level two starts back.

Orino, shipping in from the east for Trainer David Jacobson, has been showing steady improvement over each of his most recent races.  Lewis Vale, also trained by David Jacobson, should be quickest early; but Lewis Vale could be compromised by the outside post.  Conquest Sabre Cat was just a head behind Banze No Oeste at the wire last time out.

Proud Piece (Ire) could move up off the freshening.  Urban Bourbon could work out a nice stalking trip.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 9 with 9 with 5 with 3,13 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,5,9,10 with 1,4,9 with 5 with 3,4,7,12,13,14 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 6,8 with 9 with 5 with 3,13 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 9 with 3,6 with 5 with 3,13 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 9 with 9 with 1,6,7,8 with 3,13 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 9 with 9 with 5 with 2,11 $1.00

Total: $56.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:00 EST / 3:00 PST.  Good luck to all.

12/26/17 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - The Mathis Brothers Mile - # 5 Bowies Hero (Final Odds 3.40) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - The La Brea - # 3 Unique Bella (1.30*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The Malibu - # 1 City of Light (7.50) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 5 Spanish Hombre (2.50*) - "A" & "C" Selection*

*In Race 9, the winner, Spanish Hombre, was an "A" Selection.  # 4 Midnight Pleasure, a "C" Selection, was a late scratch, so I received Spanish Hombre, the Post Time Favorite, in his stead.

City of Light won the Malibu by rushing up to grab the early lead, and then never being headed.  In retrospect, projecting City of Light to be the pacesetter in Race 8 was not a difficult chore; and while City of Light's form may not have justified making him an "A" Selection, he certainly warranted a spot in my play.  So while his exclusion in and of itself was not what kept me from collecting Tuesday, it was an error that hopefully I will not repeat any time soon.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  5 / 3 / 1 / 5  were rewarded with a payout of $128.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/26/17 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Happy Boxing Day, a.k.a. Opening Day at Santa Anita, as the Arcadia racetrack beings its half year meet.  As per tradition, the featured race on Tuesday's card is the Grade 1 Malibu; one of four Graded Stakes on the card.  I'll be taking a look at that contest below, as I take a run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - The Mathis Brothers Mile (Grade 2) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Big Score (Morning Line 5-2)

B's

None

C's

# 2 B Squared (ML 5-1)
# 3 Colonist (ML 4-1)
# 5 Bowies Hero (ML 7-2)

Big Score appears classiest here, and he could improve with the cutback in real estate.  B Squared should move up with the return to turf.  Colonist could get first run at the leaders before Big Score gets rolling.  The last time Bowies Hero's finished in front of Big Score was in an eight furlong contest; perhaps lightning will strike twice.

RACE 7 - (F) The La Brea (Grade 1) - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Unique Bella (ML 9-5)
# 7 Paradise Woods (ML 8-5)

B's

# 4 Mopotism (ML 12-1)

C's

None

Unique Bella and Paradise Woods are clearly two quality runners, certainly the tops in this field; but it strikes me as fair to question how they will run in this spot today.  Unique Bella, much heralded (and rightly so) entering the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, just didn't have it that day; and while this is obviously a much softer spot, there's no guarantee that Unique Bella will return to top form.  As for Paradise Woods, Show finisher in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, one has to wonder if seven furlongs is enough distance for her to perform her best.

Therefore, based on the above, it strikes me as reasonable to add a third runner in this field to the big ticket.  For that reason I've made Mopotism a "B" Selection rather than a "C" Selection here.  I believe Mopotism, three lengths behind Paradise Woods at the wire in the BC Distaff, will benefit greatly from having to go around just one turn today; and I believe that Mopotism's works over this main track earlier this month and back in October show that she can pick 'em up and put 'em down quick enough to be competitive at the seven furlong distance.  Do I think Mopotism will win today?  Probably not; but I think the question marks surrounding the top two contenders, coupled with Mopotism's likely price, justify using her in my play.

RACE 8 - The Malibu (Grade 1) - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Favorable Outcome (ML 3-1)

B's

# 2 Edwards Going Left (ML 8-1)
# 3 Irish Freedom (ML 5-1)
# 6 Pavel (ML 4-1)

C's

None

Favorable Outcome, trained by Chad Brown, appears to be in top form.  Edwards Going Left showed steady improvement in each of his Fall races.  Irish Freedom and Pavel are two that could benefit from the turnback in distance.

RACE 9 - OC 40k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 5 Spanish Hombre (ML 5-2)
# 11 Lazzam (GB) (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 2 Incredible Luck (ML 12-1)
# 6 Temple Keys (ML 6-1)
# 9 Chris and Dave (ML 10-1)
# 12 Winning Element (ML 8-1)

C's

# 3 Tule Fog (ML 15-1)
# 4 Midnight Pleasure (ML 10-1)
# 8 Accountability (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 13 Mongolian Greywolf (ML 6-1) and # 14 Any Questions (ML 6-1) as they do not draw in off the Also Eligible list

Spanish Hombre was a half length behind Lazzam (GB) at the wire last time out, when those two filled out the bottom rungs of the Trifecta at this class level.  Incredible Luck could improve with the return to turf and with the blinkers being taken back off.

Temple Keys could move up going third off the layoff.  Chris and Dave has won on the grass in the past, so the surface switch should cause no problems.  Winning Element may be in over his head; but Winning Element sure looked much improved last time out with the move from east coast to west.

Tule Fog tries winners for the first time after graduating by charging down the hill; expect Tule Fog to be the one that they'll have to catch to win.  Midnight Pleasure is probably on the wrong surface; but Midnight Pleasure certainly fits here on class.  Accountability has run well in the past over this turf course, albeit against state bred only competition.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 8 with 3,7 with 4 with 5,11 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 8 with 3,4,7 with 2,3,4,6 with 2,5,6,9,11,12 $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,3,5 with 3,7 with 4 with 5,11 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 3,7 with 4 with 3,4,8 $3.00

Total: $49.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 5:40 EST / 2:40 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Merry Christmas!

“Christmas is not just a time for festivity and merry making. It is more than that. It is a time for the contemplation of eternal things. The Christmas spirit is a spirit of giving and forgiving.” - J. C. Penney

Here's hoping that Santa brought you plenty of sure things that you'll be cashing throughout the New Year.  Merry Christmas!

12/23/17 Delta Downs Late Pick Four - Preview

What's this?  A Saturday with no thoroughbred racing in California?  Well, what to do?  Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park are running; but that's much too early in the day for my tastes.  Likewise the other daytime tracks.  So considering all my options, I decided to take my play Saturday to just outside Vinton, Louisiana.  So with that let's get to it, as I take a run at The Late Pick Four at Delta Downs.

RACE 7 - Clm $15k N3L - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Q' Mark (Morning Line 6-1)

B’s

# 1 Colt Silver Bullet (ML 5-1)
# 2 Saved by Zero (ML 5-2)
# 3 Smart Prospector (ML 6-1)
# 4 Arlen's Prospect (ML 3-1)
# 7 Walking in Faith (ML 15-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 5 Go Gone Gone (ML 7-2)

Q' Mark, ambitiously placed last time out, drops back down to a more realistic class level.  Q'Mark's late running style should serve him well in this field, and the outside draw adds to the appeal.

Colt Silver Bullet should move up by getting off the lawn.  Saved by Zero took the Show at this class level last time out.  Smart Prospector may have needed that last race.  Arlen's Prospect may improve with the change of scenery.  Walking in Faith is on the ticket because everyone else is.

RACE 8 - OC 10k - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Forerun (ML 1-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 3 Say Charlie (ML 6-1)
# 5 River Bobcat (ML 5-1)
# 9 It's Time to B (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 1 He's All Ours (ML 12-1) and # 11 Prince Isaac (ML 15-1).  Bring in # 1A Red Production (ML 12-1) off the Also Eligible List.  #1A Red Production will run as an uncoupled entry.

Note that entry in this contest without being eligible to be claimed is not based upon lifetime Wins; that's why there's no "N1X" or "N2L", etc. following the claiming price above.  Rather, this contest is written more as a Optional Claimer / Starter Allowance hybrid, as any runner that has started for a claiming price of $5k or less, either this year or last, is eligible to run here without fear of changing hands at the claiming box.  As near as I can tell, all runners in this field fit under the Starter Allowance condition, as it doesn't appear that any of these are running Saturday for a tag.

Forerun, trained by Tom Amoss, enters this contest with a three race winning streak, the most recent at a class level similar to today's event.  Say Charlie, a well beaten Place behind Forerun last time out, could be the one running best late.

River Bobcat finished in the Exacta under similar conditions in two of his last three starts.  It's Time to B may have needed that last race, and could improve going second off the layoff.

RACE 9 - (F) [S] ALW N3L - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A's

# 2 Kiss That Dude (ML 5-2)

B's

# 5 Sashimi Blaster (ML 8-5)

C's

None

Scratch # 6 My Gal Layla (ML 3-1)

Kiss That Dude returns to Delta Downs after a visit to the Fair Grounds turf course last time, and should improve upon that outing.  Sashimi Blaster took the Place at this class level last time out; but the cutback in distance Saturday may compromise Sashimi Blaster's late running style.  My Gal Layla may have needed that last one, and she could improve going second off the layoff.

RACE 10 - (F) Md $10k - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 D D's Delight (ML 5-2)
# 8 Andale Girl (ML 7-2)

B's

# 2 Carellie's Candy (ML 6-1)
# 4 Anydayoftheweek (ML 15-1)
# 7 Itsbouttime (ML 5-1)
# 9 Aprojectformike (ML 15-1)
# 10 Ginky Lou Winky (ML 9-2)

C's

None

Scratch the Also Eligibles, # 11 Tax Money (ML 7-2) and # 12 Tania's Song (ML 15-1)

D D's Delight missed graduation by just a neck at this class level last time out.  Andale Girl has been working reasonably well for her return from an extended layoff.

Carellie's Candy seems to prefer the turf; but if Carellie's Candy can bring her grass form to this track Saturday, then she can certainly win.  Anydayoftheweek could move up with the drop in class and change of scenery.

Itsbouttime could improve with the cutback in distance.  Aprojectformike is a first time starter for Trainer Alan Klanfer, who tends to do well with such.  Ginky Lou Winky took the Show at this class level last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 8 with 2 with 1,8 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: ALL with 8 with 2,5 with 1,2,4,7,8,9,10 $42.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 6 with 3,5,9 with 2 with 1,8 $3.00

Total: $47.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 9:27 EST / 6:27 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/17/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 6 Lindante (Final Odds 5.10) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 5 Dangerously Close (2.40*) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 8 Tasunke Witco (2.60) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 2 Southern Thunder (5.90) - "B" Selection

I had strongly considered making # 4 Li'l Grazen (2.90) in the second leg of the sequence my big ticket single, either along with or instead of Tasunke Witco, who was my big ticket single in the third leg.  Fortunately I decided against that move and instead used two others in addition to Li'l Grazen in Race 8; and since one of those two was Dangerously Close, Sunday became a day for me to collect rather than contribute.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other four runners to which I would have cashed in the nightcap:

# 3 Royal Seeker (12.00) - $588.50 Finish: 8th
# 5 Spend It (5.50) - $225.45 Finish: 6th
# 8 Is Trevor Clever (2.00*) - $135.40 Finish: 3rd
# 10 Mr. Matlock (2.90) - $213.70 Finish: 5th

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct Late Pick Four sequence of  6 / 5 / 8 / 2  which paid $301.75 for a fifty cent wager.  That makes for a profit of $265.75 on my initial $36 investment, or approximate odds of 7.38-1.

I hope you all had it with me.  May God bless us as we spend our winnings.

Onto the next race!

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/17/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

And so we come to the closing day of the Winter Meet at Los Alamitos Race Course.  I don't know why they call it the Winter Meet, as it's still Fall.  But then again, they can't call it the Fall Meet, because that's what they call their September Meet, even though all those dates are in the Summer.  Ideally, the September Meet should be called the Fairgrounds Meet, because Los Al took over the dates that used to be run over at Fairplex / Pomona / Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, and the December Meet should be called the Fall Meet.  But I imagine I may be one of only about a half dozen people on the planet who actually care about such things.  Anyway, whatever you call it, it ends Sunday.  So with all that let's get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 7 - Clm $16k N2X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Lindante (Morning Line 9-2)

B’s

# 3 American League (ML 3-1)
# 4 Flash Henry (ML 4-1)
# 8 Harrovian (ML 8-1)

C's

None

Lindante seems to settle for too many minor awards; but he's one-for-five lifetime over this track, and is certainly in top form.  American League won the speed duel at this class level last time out but lost the race, having to settle for the Show.  Flash Henry is getting some much needed class relief, while Harrovian moves up the class ladder after winning convincingly last time out.

RACE 8 - (F) Alw 50000s N2L - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Li'l Grazen (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 5 Dangerously Close (ML 5-1)
# 7 Troublesome (ML 6-1)

C's

# 2 Yalisha (ML 9-2)
# 3 Coalinga Hills (ML 4-1)
# 8 Lady's War Dress (ML 20-1)

Note for future reference that this one is for fillies and mares which have not won two races in their career; no exemptions.  Each of these runners have visited the Winner's Circle once, and only once, in their career.

Li'l Grazen took the Show at this class level last time out at Del Mar.  Dangerously Close goes first off the claim for Trainer Genaro Vallejo, who has been having a very impressive meet.  Troublesome took the Show last time out against stiffer competition.

Yalisha was first under the wire the last time she competed on a Fast dirt track, but a DQ moved her back to second.  Coalinga Hills may be better suited to turf than dirt; but Coalinga Hills has been working well over this main track.  Lady's War Dress was impressive winning her debut over this main track last time out; but last time out twelve months ago.

RACE 9 - Alw 12500s - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Tasunke Witco (ML 3-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 2 Seeking the West (ML 5-2)
# 3 Sense of Glory (ML 4-1)
# 5 Mon Mousse (ML 5-1)

We saw the distaff version of this contest in Race 5 on Friday.  Note for future reference that, unlike many Starter Allowances run in California, this event has no lifetime Win restrictions for entry; but it does have a class/recency Win restriction.  So in addition to the requirement that the runner seeking to be entered must have started for a claiming price of $12.5k or less, either this year or last, he must ALSO have not won a claiming, starter, or optional claiming race exceeding that $12.5k price tag in the time period after competing in that $12.5k claiming contest.

So the two questions to answer if you wanted to run your horse here are:

1)  Did he run for a claiming price of $12.5k or less in either 2016 or 2017?  If "Yes", then proceed to:
2)  Has he won since, in a race where he was entered for more than that $12.5k tag?  If "No", then you're good to go.

So in this field, every runner excepting # 1 Hot Perfection (ML 10-1) was eligible to be claimed for $12.5k or less last time out.  Since (obviously) none of those have won since their last race, they're eligible to run here.  As for Hot Perfection, he was eligible to be claimed (and, indeed, was claimed) for $6.25k back on July 23.  Since Hot Perfection did not get his picture taken in any of the three races that he ran since that July 23 contest, he's good to go here.

Tasunke Witco appears to have a clear class edge here, having won at the $12.5k Claiming level last time out over this main track.  Tasunke Witco also won for $16k three starts back at Del Mar.

Seeking the West took the Place behind a next out winner last time out.  Sense of Glory fought back hard after being passed to take the Place in front of a next out winner last time out.  Mon Mousse can be expected to be quick early; but the concern with Mon Mousse is will his early speed stay with him as he moves up the class ladder.

RACE 10 - Md $20k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Spend It (ML 4-1)

B's

# 2 Southern Thunder (ML 9-2)
# 3 Royal Seeker (ML 10-1)
# 8 Is Trevor Clever (ML 3-1)
# 10 Mr. Matlock (ML 7-2)

C's

# 1 Vow's Son (ML 6-1)
# 4 Haylord (ML 15-1)
# 6 Sun Kingdom (ML 30-1)
# 7 Downside Up (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 9 Hailey's Kid Comet (ML 20-1)

Spend It crossed under the wire first at this class level last time out, but had to settle for the Place due to a DQ.  Southern Thunder took the Show at this class level last time out.  Royal Seeker may be settling for too many minor awards; but Royal Seeker fits well with the contenders here.

Is Trevor Clever took the Show against winners three starts back, albeit on the grass.  Mr. Matlock drops in for a tag for the first time.  The "C" Selections are everyone else.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 4 with 8 with 5 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,6,8 with 4,5,7 with 8 with 2,3,5,8,10 $30.00

12/16/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 10 Bow and Arrow (Final Odds 6.50) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - # 2 Rick's Dream (2.30) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - The King Glorious - # 2 Intimidate (4.00) - "C" Selection
Race 10 - # 6 Kaleidoscope Kid (6.70) - No Selection

For the second day in a row (and third in his last four tries) Jockey Mike Smith nails his solo, getting his picture taken in the Winner's Circle with Intimidate, his only mount of the day.  My "A" Selection in that contest, The King Glorious, just didn't have it Saturday, as # 6 Bookies Luck (1.20*) was able to beat just one runner home, without ever being seriously involved in the running.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  10 / 2 / 2 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $1,713.15 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/16/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

When California Chrome won the King Glorious in 2013, he became the last stakes winner ever at Hollywood Park.  I don't know if the field in Saturday's renewal of the King Glorious at Los Al contains a California Chrome; but I do know that Bookies Luck looks like a solid standout on paper.  Whether or not Bookies Luck will be a solid standout on the track remains to be seen, as do the results of the other races on the tail end of Saturday's card, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 7 - Clm $8k N2X - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 9 Bargaining (Morning Line 6-1)

B’s

# 6 Chromium (ML 3-1)
# 8 Justonetimebaby (ML 20-1)

C's

# 5 Summer Buddha (ML 8-1)
# 10 Bow and Arrow (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 11 Shining Hope (ML 12-1), who does not draw in off the Also Eligible list

Chromium was a convincing winner last time out one rung down on the class ladder, with Justonetimebaby grabbing the Show behind him.  Bargaining took the Place at this class level last time out, and looks to be quickest here.  Bow and Arrow and Summer Buddha filled out the bottom two slots of the Trifecta at this class level last time out, albeit around two turns.

RACE 8 - Clm $12.5k N2L - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Rick's Dream (ML 7-2)
# 4 Rocky's Show (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 1 You're a Daisy (ML 12-1)
# 5 Mostly Cloudy (ML 20-1)
# 6 Mr. Louis (ML 5-2)
# 7 Cal Cal Li Gowchis (ML 8-1)
# 8 Where's Bubba (ML 15-1)

# 9 Julia's Summer (ML 20-1)
# 10 Informality (ML 3-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 3 Justice Rules (ML 15-1)

It appears to me that Rick's Dream and Rocky's Show are the two best in this field, with Rocky's Show being the one to look for early, while Rick's Dream seems to be the one that will be running best late.  Beyond that you have a mixed collection of possibilities, from those who are dropping in for the cheapest price tag of their career, to those that have run well against less expensive stock, but without getting the Win.  While I could probably winnow at least a couple in this field off the big ticket, the fact is that I really don't have a handle on this race; and since I'm already going short in other legs in this sequence, it seems best to just run up the white flag here and punch the "ALL" button.

RACE 9 - The King Glorious $100k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Bookies Luck (ML 8-5)

B's

None

C's

# 2 Intimidate (ML 4-1)
# 3 Minoso (ML 12-1)
# 4 Lucky Romano (ML 6-1)
# 7 Campaigner (ML 6-1)

Bookies Luck is trying two turns for the first time; which is pretty much the only concern that I have with this pick.  If Bookies Luck can make the distance without losing form, then he should be an easy winner Saturday.  If not; well, that's why I play backup tickets.

Intimidate should improve with a cleaner trip.  Minoso closed well while graduating last time out.  Lucky Romano looks poised to make a move forward.  Campaigner could improve with a better start.

RACE 10 - Md $30k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Dare to Enter (ML 5-2)

B's

# 2 Swallows Inn Gal (ML 15-1)

C's

# 1 Magnum Maduro (ML 6-1)
# 5 Super Classic (ML 20-1)

# 7 Charming Ruler (ML 7-2)
# 9 Desert Black (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 11 High Rise, who does not draw in off the Also Eligible list

Dare to Enter took the Place at this class level in his debut two starts back.  Swallows Inn Gal is a filly taking on the boys; and she just might be quick enough to do it.

Magnum Maduro was well regarded in his debut last time out, leaving the gate as the Post Time Favorite.  Super Classic is getting some much needed class relief.  Charming Ruler took the Show at this class level at Santa Anita two starts back.  Desert Black took the Show at this class level last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 9 with 2,4 with 6 with 3 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 6,8,9 with ALL with 6 with 2,3 $27.00

12/15/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - # 1 Tizway That Way (Final Odds 1.30*) - "C" Selection
Race 6 - # 2 Four Gaels (21.90) - No Selection
Race 7 - # 4 Princess Kendra (8.80) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - # 1 Ahimsa (3.60) - "B" Selection

When a jockey of the caliber of Mike Smith (and, trust me, there are extremely few jockeys of the caliber of Mike Smith) comes to the track to ride just one mount, and that mount is a first time starter, you have to figure that mount is live.  And while I did have that mount (Ahimsa) on the big ticket, not fully appreciating just how well regarded she was by her connections was a pretty big mistake on my part.  Sadly, that was just one of many mistakes that I made with Friday's play.  So let's just say that, based upon the results, I needed one over the track, and that I should improve next time out.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  1 / 2 / 4 / 1  were rewarded with a payout of $2,120.30 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

12/15/17 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

Last weekend it was Golden Gate that wrapped up their Fall season; now this weekend it's Los Alamitos' turn, as they enter the home stretch of their Fall Meeting.  So with these being the final days for California Thoroughbred racing until after Christmas, I thought it would be a good idea to squeeze another day of fun from the proceedings; which is why Friday I'll be taking another run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 5 - (F) Alw 12500s - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Backintheacademy (Morning Line 4-1)
# 5 Jill Madden (ML 6-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 1 Tizway That Way (ML 5-2)
# 7 Ryder's Starlight (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 2 Fly Far Away (ML 15-1) and # 3 Exactamente (ML 3-1)

Note for future reference that, unlike many Starter Allowances run in California, this event has no lifetime Win restrictions for entry; but it does have a class/recency Win restriction.  So in addition to the requirement that the filly or mare seeking to be entered must have started for a claiming price of $12.5k or less, either this year or last, she must ALSO have not won a claiming, starter, or optional claiming race exceeding that $12.5k price tag in the time period after competing in that $12.5k claiming contest.

So the two questions to answer if you wanted to run your filly or mare here are:

1)  Did she run for a claiming price of $12.5k or less in 2016 or 2017?  If "Yes", then proceed to:
2)  Has she won since, in a race where she was entered for more than that $12.5k tag?  If "No", then you're good to go.

So in this field, # 3 Exactamente (ML 3-1), # 4 Backintheacademy (ML 4-1), # 5 Jill Madden (ML 6-1), and # 6 Sheswildnfree (ML 6-1) all ran for a $12.5k or less claiming price last time out.  Since that was their most recent race, they obviously have not won since that race, heading into Friday.

# 1 Tizway That Way (ML 5-2) won while competing with a $5k price tag on her head two starts back, at Arlington Park.  Since Tizway That Way failed to win the next time out, the only race between the running for the $5k claiming price and today, then she's good to go here.  # 7 Ryder's Starlight (ML 4-1) ran for a claiming price of $12.5k back on September 16, 2016; and while Ryder's Starlight has visited the Winner's Circle twice since that contest, both of those Wins came when she was competing in a $12.5k Starter Allowance (much like Friday's event).

Which leaves # 2 Fly Far Away (ML 15-1); which is somewhat problematic.  See, Fly Far Away ran for a claiming price of $12.5k back on September 27, 2015, and she hasn't won since.  But September 27, 2015 wasn't in either 2016 nor 2017; at least, not on my calendar.  So how did Fly Far Away sneak into Friday's contest?

Well, while I can't know for sure, I think the answer lies in Race 3 at Emerald Downs on August 15, 2016; a contest in which Fly Far Away took the Place.  That race was a $15k Waiver Claiming contest; but runners could get a three pound weight allowance by entering the gate with a $12.5k price tag on their head.  Now, according to the Equibase chart of the race, Flay Far Away did not run for the $12.5k price tag; indeed, Fly Far Away didn't run for any price tag because, having been inactive for nearly eleven months at that point (and thus making her 2016 debut), she was eligible to compete without threat of being claimed (hence the "Waiver" in the Waiver Claiming title above).

So the Los Alamitos stewards either choose to look the other way at that one, deciding that having a $12.5k claiming price in the conditions for that race was close enough; or the connections of Fly Far Away simply slipped one past them, as those in the racing office who are supposed to check such things just had something else to do.  Anyway, whatever the reason, Fly Far Away will be running in this contest Friday.  At least, as I type this.  EDIT: Fly Far Away has now been scratched.

Okay; enough with the conditions.  Backintheacademy and Jill Madden were each convincing winners in their respective contests last time out.  Tizway That Way and Ryder's Starlight both fit well here with the contenders as far as talent goes; but neither Tizway That Way nor Ryder's Starlight have done well in the past when competing over a Fast dirt track.

RACE 6 - Clm $6.25k - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Pat the Bear (ML 5-2)

B’s

None

C's

# 1 Quantum Force (ML 4-1)
# 5 Johns Journey (ML 7-2)
# 7 Warren's Cole (ML 8-1)
# 8 My Secret Affair (ML 3-1)

Pat the Bear took the Place against more expensive two starts back.  Quantum Force could romp here if he could return to the form that he showed two starts back in his debut.  But that contest was back on Independence Day, 2015; and if Quantum Force's connections thought that he could return to that form, they wouldn't be running him here for $6.25k.

Johns Journey won by daylight against classier foes back in July.  Warren's Cole may be the one running best late.  My Secret Affair is getting some significant class relief here; but My Secret Affair may need this race to get back into shape off the layoff, as she faded badly in her return last time out.

RACE 7 - (F) [S] OC 20k/N1X - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Plane Lucky (ML 5-2)
# 7 Dreamy Gal (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 2 Be a Lady (ML 3-1)
# 5 Tuscany Beauty (ML 8-1)

C's

# 1 No Comparison (ML 20-1)
# 3 Bold At Night (ML 5-1)
# 4 Princess Kendra (ML 5-1)

Plane Lucky looks to be the speed of the speed here; perhaps Plane Lucky can last 'til the wire today.  Dreamy Gal had a rough go of it last time out; perhaps she improves with a cleaner trip today.

Be a Lady goes first off the claim for Trainer Mark Glatt, who tends to do well with such.  Tuscany Beauty could benefit from the cutback in distance.  The "C" Selections are everyone else, as there's no notable standout in this field, and three of the four runners on the big ticket failed as the Post Time Favorite in their most recent contests.

RACE 8 - (F) MSW - Six and a Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Raising Aida (ML 9-2)

B's

# 1 Ahimsa (ML 7-2)
# 2 Star Dreamin (ML 8-1)
# 3 Cowboytakemeaway (ML 6-1)
# 5 Gracious Me (ML 6-1)
# 6 Loving Moment (ML 6-1)
# 7 Ride Lady Ride (ML 5-1)
# 8 D D's Lute (ML 6-1)
# 9 Jazzy (ML 20-1)

C's

None

These are juveniles, with only three experienced runners in the field: Star Dreamin, D D's Lute, and Jazzy.  None of the three has ever left the gate as the Post Time Favorite; indeed, of the three, D D's Lute is the only one to have gone to the post at single digit odds.  In addition, none of the three has ever finished in the Trifecta.  For that matter, D D's Lute is the only one of the three to have been as good as third at the stretch call.

But these are juveniles; so there's no telling who's grown up since the last time that they competed.  There are also several first time starters whose breeding suggests that will run well at first asking.  So I'm just going to take the easy way out in this leg and punch the "ALL" button on the big ticket and hope that I catch a price.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4,5 with 4 with 6,7 with 4 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,5 with 4 with 2,5,6,7 with ALL $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,7 with 4 with 6,7 with 4 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 4,5 with 1,5,7,8 with 6,7 with 4 $8.00
$0.50 P4: 4,5 with 4 with 1,3,4 with 4 $3.00

Total: $53.00

Post Time for Race 5 is 5:28 EST / 2:28 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/10/17 Golden Gate Fields Golden Pick 6 - Results

Race 5 - # 5 Broken Up (Final Odds 2.80*) - "A" Selection
Race 6 - # 4 Our Favorite City (7.20) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - The Miss America - # 5 Kathy's Song (1.70*) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - # 9 Sunset Dragunn (6.20) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 10 Brookes All Mine (6.70) - "C" Selection
Race 10 - # 1 Country Road (2.00*) - "B" Selection

Yeah, I had 'em all, etc., etc.; but, seriously, it really wasn't that sharp a play.  My single, # 5 She Sang (1.30*) in the second leg, took the Place, but was well beaten by the winner; and besides, if half your winners are "C" Selections, then you really didn't have a good handle on the sequence.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Golden Pick Six sequence of  5 / 4 / 5 / 9 / 10 / 1  were rewarded with a payout of $8,095.90 for their twenty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

12/10/17 Golden Gate Fields Golden Pick 6 - Preview

Sunday marks the end of the Fall meet at Golden Gate, meaning everything must go; and a big part of everything that is going is the carryover pool in the Jackpot Golden Pick six.  Well, maybe not that big a part, as the pool going into Sunday is just $3,861; but that's what'll happen when your pool gets scooped the Friday before your closing Sunday.  So with that as backdrop let's get to it, as I take another run at The Golden Pick Six at The Bay's Best Bet.

RACE 5 - Alw 12500s - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 5 Broken Up (Morning Line 7-2)
# 8 Dixie Pistol (ML 10-1)

B’s

# 3 Monsajem Accrete (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Taelyns Prince (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 4 My Discretion (ML 20-1), # 7 Junior G Man (ML 20-1), and # 10 Sir Vronski (ML 4-1)

Note for future reference that, unlike many Starter Allowances run in California (like Race 10 below) this event has no lifetime Win restrictions for entry.  So any runner that has started for a claiming price of $12.5k or less, either this year or last, is eligible to run here.

Broken Up, a winner with a $40k price tag on his head last time out, has run well in the past over this turf course, and should have enough pace to chase in this contest.  Dixie Pistol looks to be quickest here, and he could take this field all the way.

Monsajem Accrete, ambitiously placed last time out, should appreciate the class relief.  Taelyns Prince could be running well late; but the rail draw means Taelyns Prince may have to fight through traffic to get to the line first.

RACE 6 - (F) Clm $12.5k B - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 5 She Sang (ML 3-1)

B's

None

C's

# 4 Our Favorite City (ML 6-1)
# 9 Our Renee (ML 5-2)

This contest is restricted to fillies and mares four years old and upward which have never won two races OR fillies which are three years old.  So if your distaff runner is four years old or older, then she must have fewer than two wins in her career.  However, if your filly is three years old, then she can have as many wins as she pleases, and still be eligible to run here.  Note that there are no qualifiers for the win totals (that is, no exceptions for maiden victories, or wins where the purse was less than a certain dollar amount).

She Sang, a three year old filly with four career victories in thirteen tries heading into Sunday. won by daylight under these conditions last time out.  Our Favorite City, a three time winner in ten attempts, has failed as the Post Time Favorite in two of her last three starts; but Our Favorite City could be quickest early.  Our Renee, a three year old with just one lifetime Win, is racing above her conditions here.  Our Renee is talented enough where she could get her picture taken today; but she does not appear to have been well severed by being entered in this contest.

RACE 7 - (F) Miss America $50k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Lady Valeur (Ire) (ML 7-2)

B's

# 5 Kathy's Song (ML 4-1)
# 9 Central Heat (ML 8-1)

C's

# 8 Coachwhip (ML 20-1)
# 10 Dreamarcher (ML 5-1)

Lady Valeur (Ire) disappointed as the Post Time Favorite last time out, crossing under the wire a little more than three lengths behind Dreamarcher; but that was a contest moved off the turf.  With Sunday's race being run on some California grass, Lady Veleur should regain her edge.

Kathy's Song ships in from downstate, and seems well meant here.  Central Heat has run well in the past over this turf course.  Coachwhip may be outclassed here; but seeing how Coachwhip had little trouble finding the Winner's Circle in each of his two prior career races, perhaps Coachwhip is something special.

RACE 8 - ALW N1X - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A's

# 5 Sweet River Baines (ML 9-5)

B's

# 7 Brownie Finale (ML 8-1)

C's

# 3 Oil (ML 9-2)
# 6 Stellar Sea (ML 8-1)
# 9 Sunset Dragon (ML 10-1)

Sweet River Baines is the new shooter here, moving up in class after winning last time out with relative ease.  Most of the rest of this field is the N1X Allowance class in this circuit that seems to just take turns finishing in front of each other.  It's difficult to pick one from that group without using them all, as they are all pretty much evenly matched, as evidenced by their blanket finish in trying to grab the minor placings last time out.  I landed on Brownie Finale as a "B" Selection because I like the angle of using a runner that won the duel but lost the race last time out; but, really, if you have the budget, just use them all.

RACE 9 - (F) Clm $12.5k N2X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Gilded (ML 6-1)
# 8 Letmetakeaselfie (ML 15-1)
# 11 Annisquam (ML 12-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 1 Well Caught (ML 5-2)
# 9 Sparkle Shine (ML 15-1)
# 10 Brookes All Mine (ML 9-2)

Scratch # 5 Winter's Nest (ML 10-1)

Gilded looked strong while winning by daylight over this turf course last time out.  Letmetakeaselfie looked much improved coming off the freshening last time out.  Annisquam could steal this one on the front end.

Well Caught ships in from downstate and gets some much needed class relief.  Sparkly Shine could be the one running best late.  Brookes All Mine took the Show against classier foes two starts back.

RACE 10 - Alw 40000s N2L - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 6 Out At Eight (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 1 Country Road (ML 9-2)
# 4 Twice as Fast (ML 5-1)
# 5 Royal Opera House (Ire) (ML 6-1)
# 8 Hello Bourbon (ML 6-1)

C's

# 2 Divulge (ML 12-1)
# 3 Stocked (ML 6-1)
# 7 Many Moods (ML 8-1)
# 9 One Son of a Chief (ML 10-1)

Note for future reference that this one is for horses which have not won two races in their career; but with one exemption, as runners get a pass by having one (and just one) win not considered, if one of their two career wins was for $16k or less.  For the record, # 1 Country Road (ML 9-2) and # 9 One Son of a Chief (ML 10-1) are the only two runners in this field to have visited the winner's circle more than once.

Out At Eight and Twice as Fast filled out the bottom two slots in the Trifecta at this class level last time out.  Country Road was much improved last time out with the cutback in distance; perhaps he can do it again.

Royal Opera House (Ire) could be well placed early with the addition of blinkers.  Hello Bourbon, despite having never crossed under the wire first in his career, seems to fit well with the contenders here.  The "C" Selections are everyone else because in my opinion this one looks to be very wide open.

OK, that's the analysis.  Since this is a mandatory payout day, there are no concerns about having pressed up a single winning selection multiple times.  So with all that, playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P6: 5,8 with 5 with 3 with 5 with 6,8,11 with 6 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.20 P6: 3,5,8 with 5 with 3,5,9 with 5,7 with 6,8,11 with 1,4,5,6,8 $54.00

A's with One C

$0.20 P6: 1 with 5 with 3 with 5 with 6,8,11 with 6 $0.60
$0.20 P6: 5,8 with 4,9 with 3 with 5 with 6,8,11 with 6 $2.40
$0.20 P6: 5,8 with 5 with 8,10 with 5 with 6,8,11 with 6 $2.40
$0.20 P6: 5,8 with 5 with 3 with 3,6,9 with 6,8,11 with 6 $3.60
$0.20 P6: 5,8 with 5 with 3 with 5 with 1,9,10 with 6 $1.20
$0.20 P6: 5,8 with 5 with 3 with 5 with 6,8,11 with 2,3,7,9 $4.80

Total: $75.00

Post Time for Race 5 is 5:15 EDT / 2:15 PDT.  Good luck to all.

12/9/17 Golden Gate Fields Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - The Bear Fan - # 6 Fast and Foxy (Final Odds 1.50*) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - # 5 Unusually Green (3.80*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 Macalla (2.60*) - No Selection*
Race 10 - # 1 Sizzlin' Joe (1.10*) - "A" Selection

* # 10 Pequena Maty (6.60) crossed under the wire first in Race 9, but was disqualified and placed last

Macalla had finished behind both # 10 Pequena Maty (6.60) and # 7 Exciting Dixie (31.10) last time out, so there was little reason to expect her to finish in front of those two today.  And she didn't; well, she did finish in front of Exciting Dixie; but Pequena Maty was comfortably ahead of her at the Finish Line.  But because Pequena Maty had interfered with  # 3 Lady Chrome (33.60) in the stretch,  which in turn created a chain reaction involving several runners, including Exciting Dixie, it was Macalla's number that got put up as the winner of Race 9.

Not that any of that really mattered to my play; as my only chance to collect Saturday was to have # 6 Chocolate Goddess (9.00) win Race 9.  So once Chocolate Goddess faded in the stretch after having led the field through the opening half mile, my last remaining ticket turned into trash.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  6 / 5 / 4 / 1  were rewarded with a payout of $128.50 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

12/9/17 Golden Gate Fields Late Pick Four - Preview

I'm sure by now nearly all of you are aware of the devastation caused by the Lilac fire, which consumed the San Luis Rey Downs Training Center this past Thursday.  Allow me please to express my deepest sympathies to all those who have suffered loss from this tragic event.  I pray that all who are now mourning will be comforted, that all who have been injured will be healed, and that all those that have perished will forever be remembered fondly.

I'd also like to give a special word of thanks and praise for the oh so many in the horseracing community who have done oh so much in oh so many ways to help during this most trying of times.  May you all be blessed, always, for the way that you have stepped forward during this difficult period.

I'd also like to mention, for anyone that is still seeking a way to help those in need, please consider visiting the official Go Fund Me page for the San Luis Rey Downs Fire Relief Effort, sponsored by Santa Anita Park, The Stronarch Group, and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.  You can reach the Go Fund Me page via the Del Mar home page (which will also provide you with additional information as to how you can help) or by going directly to this web address: https://www.gofundme.com/thoroughbredcare  Again, thanks to all for all that you have done.

Saturday's featured event is the $75k Bear Fan for California bred or sired Fillies and Mares.  That contest is slated for Race 7, and I'll be taking a look at it below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Bay's Best Bet.

RACE 7 - (F) [S] The Bear Fan $75k - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 7 Dis Smart Cat (Morning Line 4-1)

B's

# 4 Cuddle Alert (ML 3-1)

C's

# 3 Spring Heat (ML 20-1)
# 6 Fast and Foxy (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 2 Princess Ashlyn (ML 7-2) and # 9 Precious Time (ML 20-1)

Dis Smart Cat and Cuddle Alert are both trying the synthetic surface for the first time; but despite the change in footing, these two shippers from downstate seem well meant here.  Spring Heat and Fast and Foxy can be expected to be prominent early; and while it's expected that they will wear each other down prior to the wire, it's possible that one breaks free from the other and has things all her own way right to the Winner's Circle.

RACE 8 - Clm $32k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 4 Saxon Lord (ML 4-1)
# 5 Unusually Green (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 8 Anythingscookin (ML 10-1)

C's

# 2 Belisarius (Ire) (ML 12-1)
# 3 Freedom Hill (ML 20-1)

# 10 Hay Dude (GB) (ML 5-1)

Scratch # 1 Lovenseek (ML 9-2)

Saxon Lord and Unusually Green are a pair of class droppers exiting the same contest; they both seem to be evenly matched, and either could prevail simply by replicating their most recent turf performance.  Anythingscookin has found the Winner's Circle often enough against classier foes this year that I think that Morning Line of 10-1 is a mirage; but you never know.

Belisarius (Ire) looks like the one that will be running best late.  Freedom Hill may be outclassed here; but Freedom Hill has enough tactical speed that he can't be easily tossed.  Hay Dude (GB) showed an affinity for this turf course last time out; perhaps he can repeat.

RACE 9 - (F) ALW N1X - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A's

# 6 Chocolate Goddess (ML 9-2)

B's

# 7 Exciting Dixie (ML 20-1)
# 8 Missionelle (ML 5-1)
# 10 Pequena Maty (ML 8-1)

C's

# 5 Vronilla Parfait (ML 15-1)
# 9 Bella Luma (ML 10-1)
# 11 Propeppy (ML 8-1)

Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 13 Robin's Love (ML 3-1) and # 14 Discatsonthesquare (ML 6-1)

Chocolate Goddess goes first off the claim for Trainer Aggie Ordonez, and looks capable enough to handle the step up in class. Pequena Maty took the Place at this class level last time out, with Exciting Dixie grabbing the Show behind her.  Missionelle has finished in the Trifecta in each of her last two races, both at this class level.

Vronilla Parfait has been showing steady improvement since beginning her 2017 campaign.  Bella Luma returns from a nine month vacation; and while Bella Luma is classy enough to win at this level, it's fair to presume that this contest is to just prep her for her next start.  Propeppy could be the one running best late.

RACE 10 - Clm $4k B - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 1 Sizzlin' Joe (ML 8-5)

B's

# 2 Zorrito (ML 10-1)
# 5 Abbey Vale (Ire) (ML 5-2)
# 9 Lucky Shoes to Win (ML 12-1)

C's

# 3 Silver Jester (ML 12-1)
# 10 Union Legend (ML 15-1)

Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 11 Colour Me Happy (ML 3-1) and # 12 Jens de Ville (ML 12-1)

This contest is restricted to runners which have either:

1) Not won a race since September 1, 2017; OR
2) Which have never won four races.

So as long as a runner has fewer than four career Wins, he's eligible to run in this race.  If a horse has four career Wins or more, then none of those Wins could have come since the end of August (note that Claiming and Starter Races for $3.5k or less don't count when computing the Win totals).  For the record, # 3 Silver Jester (ML 12-1), # 8 Burger and Fries (Fr) (ML 10-1), and # 10 Union Legend (ML 15-1) are the three runners in this field with fewer than four career Wins.

Sizzlin' Joe could move up with the drop in class.  Zorrito took the Place at this class level last time out, with Lucky Shoes to Win grabbing the Show behind him.  Abbey Vale (Ire) could improve with the change in surface.

Silver Jester could steal this one on the front end.  Union Legend could contend if he can rate early.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 7 with 4,5 with 6 with 1 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,7 with 4,5,8 with 6,7,8,10 with 1,2,5,9 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 4,5 with 6 with 1 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 2,3,10 with 6 with 1 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 7 with 4,5 with 5,9,11 with 1 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 4,5 with 6 with 3,10 $2.00

Total: $58.50

Post Time for Race 7 is 6:15 EST / 3:15 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
