5/30/20 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do. - Pele

The Grade 3 Honeymoon, a turf route for three year old fillies, is the featured race on Saturday's card in Arcadia.  Hopefully when the Honeymoon is over I'll still be looking good, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 She's a Dime (Morning Line 7-2)

B’s

# 5 Eternal Endeavour (GB) (ML 8-5)

C's

# 1 Road Rager (ML 7-2)
# 2 Rather Nosy (ML 5-2)
# 3 Pink Scatillac (ML 5-1)

As can be seen above, this event did not draw well at all.  Perhaps too many connections were put off by having their runners go seven furlongs this soon into the re-start of the meet.  For the record, note that none of these five starters are in for the $40k tag.

She's a Dime ran well in her only prior try over this main track.  Eternal Endeavour (GB) should improve with the return to one turn racing.

Rather Nosy is one you definitely want to use in your intra-race exotics.  But in my opinion Rather Nosy has had enough chances to prove that she can win at this level.  So if Rather Nosy beats me Saturday, she beats me; but I'll be using Rather Nosy as a backup "C" Selection, along with the rest of the field.

RACE 7 - (F) The Honeymoon (Grade 3) - Nine Furlongs Turf

A's

# 5 Laura's Light (ML 5-2)

B's

# 8 Parkour (ML 7-2)
# 9 Stela Star (Ire) (ML 2-1)

C's

# 1 Guitty (Fr) (ML 8-1)
# 2 K P Dreamin (ML 12-1)
# 3 Fashion Royalty (GB) (ML 30-1)
# 4 Croughavouke (Ire) (ML 8-1)

# 7 Red Lark (Ire) (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 6 Little Bird (Ire) (ML 15-1)

Laura's Light is a perfect two-for-two over this turf course; and, based upon her breeding, Laura's Light should be okay with the increase in real estate.

Parkour projects to be the pacesetter, and her breeding suggests that Parkour could be the one they'll have to catch to win as the field nears the wire.  Stela Star (Ire) took the Place in the China Doll over this turf course last time out; and Stela Star could be the one running best late.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 8 - (F) [S] Md $50k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Rain Diva (ML 5-1)

B's

# 4 Awesome Alessandra (ML 6-1)

C's

# 2 Queensbeccaandjane (ML 15-1)
# 3 Rational (ML 10-1)
# 6 Tiz a Unicorn (ML 4-1)
# 8 Casillalater (ML15-1)
# 9 Lucky Daughter (ML 12-1)
# 10 Sweet Honor (ML 15-1)
# 11 La Sabalera (ML 20-1)
# 12 Keep It Classy (ML 12-1)
# 13 Capital Heat (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 1 Apache Pass (No Line) and # 5 Traffic Stopper (ML 7-2)

Rain Diva drops in for a tag for the first time; and her work over this main track on the 10th suggests that Rain Diva should do well getting off the grass.  Awesome Alessandra took the place against open (not state bred restricted) Maiden Claimers back in March.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 9 - MSW - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 11 Canadian Luck (ML 12-1)

B's

# 1 Frassard (GB) (ML 10-1)
# 2 Capital Call (ML 6-1)
# 3 Whirl Candy (ML 5-1)
# 4 Reprobate (ML 6-1)
# 5 Premier League (ML 15-1)

# 6 Tallien (Ire) (ML 6-1)
# 7 Cosmo (ML 6-1)
# 8 Rio Ocho (Ire) (ML 7-2)
# 9 Infatuate (ML 50-1)
# 10 Unusually Handsome (ML 8-1)

C's

None

The major concern when punching the "ALL" button is that when the gates open you'll sit back and watch the Favorite romp to an easy victory.  And that certainly could happen in this contest; as the Morning Line Favorite, Rio Ocho (Ire) ran quite well in his debut in his native Ireland last time out; and Rio Ocho is getting the benefit Saturday of Southern California's leading turf rider, Flavien Prat.

But Rio Ocho's debut was on synthetic, not turf.  And Rio Ocho will have to travel an additional quarter mile Saturday compared to his initial start.  Will those two things prevent Rio Ocho from getting his photo taken when the race is over?  Perhaps; perhaps not.  I lean towards perhaps; which is why I made Canadian Luck, a son of Distorted Humor, my top pick.

But, quite frankly, I would have been comfortable making any one of eight or nine runners in this field my "A" Selection; as I truly believe that this contest is incredibly wide open.  So it's everybody into the pool, as I'm going "ALL" in for this leg.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4 with 5 with 7 with 11 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,5 with 5,8,9 with 4,7 with ALL $66.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,2,3 with 5 with 7 with 11 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 4 with 1,2,3,4,7 with 7 with 11 $2.50
$0.50 P4: 4 with 5 with 2,3,6,8,9,10,11,12,13 with 11 $4.50

Total: $75.50

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:06 EDT / 3:06 PDT.  Good luck to all.

5/25/20 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 8 - # 1 Secret Keeper (Final Odds 10.60) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - The Shoemaker Mile - # 8 Raging Bull (Fr) (2.90) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 1 Studly Perfection (1.70*) - "C" Selection
Race 11 - The Gamely - # 11 Keeper Ofthe Stars (7.30) - "B" Selection

Congrats to Trainer Jonathan Wong, as Keeper Ofthe Stars, winner of the Grade 2 Buena Vista last time out and the Grade 3 Autumn Miss over this turf course last October, gives Wong his first Grade 1 winner in Monday's Gamely.  As regards my play, I did well on the turf and not on the dirt, making Monday a day for me to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  1 / 8 / 1 / 11  were rewarded with a payout of $686.90 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

5/25/20 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

"I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration [Memorial] Day.  I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it.  We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did." - Benjamin Harrison

It's Memorial Day (formerly Decoration Day) in the USA; and, despite the circumstances which each of us are currently facing world wide, hopefully all of you have found at least some time to celebrate those who have given their lives in service to others, and to enjoy at least some time, in some way, doing that which you love with those for whom you care.  For me, one of the things that I love to do is play the ponies; so with that, let's get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 8 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Buyer's Remorse (Morning Line 7-2)

B's

# 8 Via Angelica (ML 6-1)
# 9 Fierce for Sul (ML 9-5)

C's

# 1 Secret Keeper (ML 6-1)
# 3 Queen of Aces (ML 15-1)

# 4 With This Vow (ML 15-1)
# 5 Queen Verrazano (ML 12-1)
# 7 Frose (ML 30-1)
# 10 River Girl (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 6 Favorite Daughter (ML 12-1)

The Past Performances that I have give this contest as being written for three years old and upward; but all entrants here are three years old; which would be beyond coincidental if older fillies and mares were, in fact, eligible to run here.

Buyer's Remorse, trained by Doug O'Neill, is one of just two experienced runners in this field (Frose is the other, for those curious).  Buyer's Remorse took the Place in her debut at Del Mar three starts back, the only other time that Buyer's Remorse has competed against fellow non-winners.

Via Angelica and Fierce for Sul are a pair of first time starters trained by Bob Baffert, who tends to do well with such.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 9 - The Shoemaker Mile (Grade 1) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A's

# 11 River Boyne (Ire) (ML 4-1)

B's

# 1 Without Parole (GB) (ML 4-1)
# 3 Next Shares (ML 12-1)
# 8 Raging Bull (Fr) (ML 7-2)
# 9 March to the Arch (ML 6-1)

C's

# 2 True Valour (Ire) (ML 20-1)
# 4 Voodoo Song (ML 12-1)
# 5 War of Will (ML 4-1)
# 6 Blitzkrieg (ML 20-1)
# 10 Neptune's Storm (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 7 Majestic Eagle (ML 20-1)

River Boyne (Ire) enters this contest having won each of his last two contests; both Graded Stakes; both over this turf course; and both at today's distance.

Without Parole (GB) took the Show in the Breeders' Cup Mile over this turf course back in November.  Next Shares was just a neck behind River Boyne at the wire last time out in the Grade 1 Kilroe Mile.

Raging Bull (Fr) was roughed up pretty good in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile last time out, and could do better with a cleaner trip.  March to the Arch could be the one running best late.

I will not be using War of Will on my main ticket.  God bless him and his connections if War of Will can be victorious here; because that would mean that War of Will is one of the best, if not the best, turf milers in the country.  To be honest, I don't see that happening.  In my opinion this event came up quite strong, even for a Grade 1; which means I don't think it's wise to waste a spot on the big ticket using a turf maiden.  So in my play War of Will will be relegated to backup "C" Selection status, along with the rest of the field.

RACE 10 - Clm $12.5k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Camino de Estrella (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 4 Fire When Ready (ML 5-2)
# 9 Imagineiamfastest (ML 8-1)

C's

# 1 Studly Perfection (ML 5-1)
# 3 Will Dancer (ML 8-1)
# 5 Original Intent (ML 20-1)
# 6 Impression (ML 4-1)
# 7 Rockandahardplace (ML 15-1)
# 8 Wilshire Dude (ML 5-1)

Camino de Estrella was hitting the board against more expensive stock at Turf Paradise this past Winter and Fall; and while form gained in Arizona doesn't often hold up in Southern California, Camino de Estrella has made it into the Trifecta in the majority of his races over this main track, which suggests that he'll run just fine today.

Fire When Ready has disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of his last four starts; not what you want to see when checking out a runner's resume.  But Fire When Ready tends to do well at today's distance; and that, combined with the class drop, could propel Fire When Ready into the winner's circle.

Imagineiamfastest took the Show against more expensive stock the last time that he competed over this main track.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 11 - (F) The Gamely (Grade 1) - Nine Furlongs Turf

A's

# 3 Lady Prancealot (Ire) (ML 6-1)

B's

# 1 Etoile (Fr) (ML 5-2)
# 7 Beautiful Lover (ML 5-1)
# 11 Keeper ofthe Stars (ML 8-1)

C's

# 4 Giza Goddess (ML 20-1)
# 5 Mucho Unusual (ML 8-1)
# 6 Simply Breathless (GB) (ML 8-1)
# 8 Tiny Tina (ML 15-1)
# 9 Siberian Iris (Ire) (ML 15-1)
# 10 Bodhicitta (GB) (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 2 Ollie's Candy (ML 4-1)

Lady Prancealot (Ire) was two and a half lengths back of Keeper Ofthe Stars in the Grade 2 Buena Vista last time out.  While I will be using both, I think that the added distance Saturday just might give Lady Prancealot the edge.

Etoile (Fr) is a Group Stakes winner in her native France.  Beautiful Lover could be the one running best late.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2 with 11 with 2 with 3 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,8,9 with 1,3,8,9,11 with 2,4,9 with 1,3,7,11 $90.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,3,4,5,7,10 with 11 with 2 with 3 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 2 with 2,4,5,6,10 with 2 with 3 $2.50
$0.50 P4: 2 with 11 with 1,3,5,6,7,8 with 3 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 2 with 11 with 2 with 4,5,6,8,9,10 $3.00

Total: $102.50

Post Time for Race 8 is 7:07 EDT / 4:07 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

5/23/20 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 6 Diamond of Value (Final Odds 3.10) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 4 Biddy Duke (5.20) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Charles Whittingham - # 5 United (1.20) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 My Journey (3.10) - "B" Selection

As he was the ultimate winner, it could indeed be said that I should have singled United on the big ticket in the Charles Whittingham, as I mentioned in the preview that I was tempted to do.  Still, it's not easy to say just how much that would have lowered the cost of my play; as singling in the third leg would have undoubtedly led to me going wider in the other contests; which, as can be seen, would have been unnecessary, despite the fact that none of the four winners was a Post Time Favorite.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other three runners to which I would have cashed in the nightcap:

# 2 Vodka Twist (7.30) - $373.35 Finish: 4th
# 9 Dr. Hoffman (1.70*) - $136.80 Finish: 2nd
# 12 Salah (3.00) - $142.60 Finish: 6th

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct Late Pick Four sequence of  6 / 4 / 5 / 4  which paid $190.05 for a fifty cent wager.  That makes for a profit of $115.05 on my initial $75.00 investment; or approximate odds of 1.53-1.

I hope you all had it with me.  May God bless us as we spend our winnings.

Onto the next race!

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

5/23/20 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

"You will never do anything in this world without courage.” - Aristotle

Saturday kicks off a three day holiday weekend in the US, and the card at Santa Anita certainly seems worthy of the occasion, featuring as it does a pair of Graded Stakes; the Daytona and the Charles Whittingham.  I'll be taking a look at the latter of those two contests below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) Clm $12.5k N2L - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Way too Sweet (Morning Line 3-1)

B’s

# 2 Sybil's Kitty (ML 7-2)
# 3 Real Good Deal (ML 5-2)
# 6 Diamond of Value (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Midnight Garden (ML 7-2)
# 5 At the Margin (ML 30-1)
# 7 Drop the Mic (ML 6-1)

Way too Sweet was way outclassed last time out (though she still managed to grab the early lead) and should move up with the class drop.  Real Good Deal and Sybil's Kitty filled out the bottom two rungs of the Superfecta at this class level last time out.

Diamond of Value could improve with the return to one turn racing.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 7 - (F) Alw 50000s - OC 40k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Vegan (ML 12-1)

B’s

# 2 Rstars and Stripes (ML 12-1)
# 4 Biddy Duke (ML 4-1)
# 7 Lovely Lilia (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Sugar Pickel (ML 6-1)
# 3 Bluegrass Sky (ML 12-1)
# 6 Too Much Heaven (ML 4-1)
# 8 Galwalksintoabar (ML 8-1)
# 9 Samurai Charm (ML 6-1)

This contest is a Starter Optional Claimer; an Optional Claimer / Starter Allowance hybrid, if you will.  A three year old filly is eligible to run here tag free if she has ever started for a claiming price of $50k or less.  That's the Starter Allowance provision, which must be met in order to enter.  The Optional Claiming piece of the conditions is that runners with fewer than two lifetime Wins can run without fear of being claimed.  Those fillies with multiple career victories are competing with a $40k price tag on their heads.  Note for future reference that the runners in this field that are eligible to be claimed are: # 4 Biddy Duke; # 5 Vegan; # 6 Too Much Heaven; and # 7 Lovely Lilia.

Vegan took the Show last time out against much classier competition; albeit on the turf in a short field.  But Vegan defeated classier competition three starts back; and Trainer Bill Spawr tends to do well when moving his runners from turf to dirt.

Rstars and Stripes could improve with the reduction in real estate; besides, who wants to be defeated by Rstars and Stripes on Memorial Day weekend?  Biddy Duke has been staying in shape by sprinting at Los Alamitos; before that, Biddy Duke took the Place against classier competition over this main track back in March.

Lovely Lilia could improve going second off the layoff.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 8 - The Charles Whittingham (Grade 2) - Ten Furlongs Turf

A's

# 5 United (ML 6-5)

B's

# 7 Rockemperor (Ire) (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Desert Stone (Ire) (ML 8-1)
# 2 Multiplier (ML 10-1)
# 4 Synthesis (ML 30-1)
# 6 Originaire (Ire) (ML 5-2)

Scratch # 3 Bold Endeavor (ML 20-1)

United and Rockemperor (Ire) look to be the two clear best here.  I give the edge to United as Rockemperor has yet to find the winner's circle against Graded (or Group) Stakes competition.  Indeed, I was very tempted to make United a big ticket single here; and not doing so may prove to be a decision that I will later regret.  But Rockemperor is trained by Chad Brown, who does quite well when shipping his runners to the West Coast; so it's two deep in this leg, with all others being used as backup "C" Selections.

RACE 9 - Md $20k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 12 Salah (ML 3-1)

B's

# 2 Vodka Twist (ML 5-1)
# 4 My Journey (ML 4-1)
# 9 Dr. Hoffman (ML 7-2)

C's

# 1 Meadway (ML 30-1)
# 3 Fabio (ML 20-1)
# 5 Papa Lorenzo (ML 50-1)
# 6 Sharp Speaker (ML 20-1)
# 7 Mongolian Wind (ML 12-1)

# 8 Posty (ML 5-1)
# 10 Starship Chewy (ML 30-1)
# 13 Ziyanair (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 11 Beaumont Beaux (No Line) and # 14 Royally Big (ML 20-1)

Salah took the Show against more expensive stock last time out; albeit in a small field.  Vodka Twist could improve dropping in for a tag for the first time, as well as moving from turf to dirt.

My Journey has taken the Show at this class level in each of his last two starts.  Dr. Hoffman could move up with the drop in class.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4 with 5 with 5 with 12 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,4,6 with 2,4,5,7 with 5,7 with 2,4,9,12 $64.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,5,7 with 5 with 5 with 12 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 4 with 1,3,6,8,9 with 5 with 12 $2.50
$0.50 P4: 4 with 5 with 1,2,4,6 with 12 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 4 with 5 with 5 with 1,3,5,6,7,8,10,13 $4.00

Total: $75.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:12 EDT / 3:12 PDT.  Good luck to all.

5/16/20 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 7 Dogtag (Final Odds 2.70) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The Evening Jewel - # 1 Smiling Shirlee (3.80) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 1 Heywoods Beach (2.30*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 5 Sorriso (1.20*) - "B" Selection

My main ticket single, # 5 Bulletproof One (1.80*) in the Evening Jewel, broke in front and was leading the field heading into the stretch; but Bulletproof One didn't have enough left for the drive, and finished well out of it in sixth.  Still, one could say that singling Bulletproof One was the right move, as I would not have been on the eventual winner even if I had gone three deep.  So the main ticket winds up with three out of four winners; and we all know what that pays.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  7 / 1 / 1 / 5  were rewarded with a payout of $153.70 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

5/16/20 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who'll decide where to go." - Dr. Seuss

Once upon a time, the running of the Preakness was scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020.  And while that is obviously not happening, Saturday is still a very bright day for horse racing; as, for the first time in a couple of months, there are enough venues operating that I feel as if I have legitimate choices regarding where I will wager.  Ultimately I landed on Santa Anita; not so much because I feel that I have a greater expectation of cashing by playing the Arcadia racetrack; but mainly because playing Santa Anita has a "comfort food" type feeling for me.  So with that let's get to it, as I take a run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 62.5k/N2X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 5 Desert Oasis (GB) (Morning Line 4-1)

B’s

# 1 Don't Blame Judy (ML 6-1)
# 2 She's Our Charm (ML 4-1)
# 3 Strike At Dawn (ML 3-1)
# 4 Sold It (ML 10-1)
# 6 Out of Balance (ML 8-1)
# 7 Dogtag (ML 5-2)

C's

None

Were I so inclined, I could narrow it down to where I was using five runners in this leg on the main ticket.  But if the best you can do is only toss two in a seven horse field, then you just have to admit that you really don't have a handle on the race.  So it's everybody into the pool, as I go "ALL" in to kick off the sequence.

RACE 8 - (F) [S] The Evening Jewel $150k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Bulletproof One (ML 5-2)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Smiling Shirlee (ML 10-1)
# 2 Bella Vita (ML 6-1)
# 3 Been Studying Her (ML 7-2)
# 4 Dim Lights (ML 15-1)
# 6 Speedy Gigi (ML 12-1)
# 7 Warrior's Moon (ML 12-1)
# 8 Florentine Diamond (ML 20-1)

# 9 Warren's Showtime (ML 3-1)
# 10 Homehome (ML 15-1)

Seven of the ten runners in this field competed on a surface other than dirt their last time out; just one more factor making this contest a challenge to handicap.  Like the initial leg in this sequence, going deep on the main ticket would be understandable.  But ultimately I decided to single here with Bulletproof One.  Bulletproof One was dominate in each of her last two contests, both run over the synthetic surface at Golden Gate Fields.  As Bulletproof One has won previously on Fast dirt tracks, I suspect that she will perform just fine Saturday.

Been Studying Her is a three time winner on the dirt, albeit for a different barn; and the barn change was the deciding factor in my decision not to used Been Studying Her on the main ticket.

Warren's Showtime looks classiest here; and Warren's Showtime would probably be a big ticket single if this contest was being run over the turf course.  In addition, Warren's Showtime is probably better suited to a longer distance.  So while it's a real tough toss, I'm going to relegate Warren's Showtime to backup "C" Selection status, along with Been Studying Her and the rest of the field.

RACE 9 - MSW - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 1 Heywoods Beach (ML 7-2)

B's

# 6 Lemonade Stand (ML 6-1)
# 8 Capital Call (ML 8-1)
# 9 Dominant Soul (ML 8-1)

C's

# 2 Eastern Ocean (ML 8-1)
# 3 No Slo Mo (ML 20-1)
# 4 Leprino (ML 5-1)

# 5 Port Saint Joe (ML 12-1)
# 7 Perseverance (ML 20-1)
# 10 Istanbul (ML 6-1)
# 11 Fire Polish (ML 12-1)
# 12 Summer Invasion (ML 12-1)

Scratch the Also Eligibles; # 13 Frasard (GB) (ML 4-1) and # 14 I'm Leaving You (ML 20-1)

Heywoods Beach missed graduation by just a neck at this class level last time out.  Lemonade Stand is a debut runner for Trainer Tim Yakteen, who has been doing well with first time starters on the turf.

Capital Call's one race experiment with blinkers on is over, and I suspect that Capital Call will run better without the hood.  Dominant Soul took the Show at this class level last time out.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 10 - [S] Md $50k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Handsome Cat (ML 6-1)

B's

# 5 Sorriso (ML 7-2)
# 6 War Maker (ML 8-1)
# 11 Desert Swarm (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Hoop Dream (ML 8-1)
# 2 Bodega (ML 15-1)
# 3 Street Demand (ML 8-1)

# 7 El Chapin (ML 50-1)
# 8 Hapi Hapi (ML 20-1)
# 9 U. S. Danger (ML 15-1)

# 10 With Due Cause (ML 8-1)
# 12 Jungle Roar (ML 8-1)

Scratch the Also Eligibles; # 13 Mobjack (No Line) and # 14 Endless Tale (NL)

Note that this contest is for California sired as well as Cal bred; which is why the Texas bred Street Demand, son of Street Life, is eligible to compete here.

Handsome Cat, one of several in this field dropping in for a tag for the first time, ran well the last time that he competed on a Fast dirt track.  Sorriso and Desert Swarm were just noses apart at the wire against non-Claiming State Bred Maidens on the turf last time out as they fought for the Show.

War Maker took the Show at this class level in his debut last time out.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 5 with 5 with 1 with 4 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 with 5 with 1,6,8,9 with 4,5,6,11 $56.00

$0.50 P4: 5 with 5 with 1 with 1,2,3,7,8,9,10,12 $4.00

Total: $69.50

5/9/20 Gulfstream Park Late Pick Four - Results

Race 9 - The Sunshine Forever - # 6 Hallady (Final Odds 1.30*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 6 Battle Of Blenheim (1.20*) - "A" Selection
Race 11 - # 3 Tap It to Win (5.20) - "B" Selection
Race 12 - # 4 Areyoutalkingtome (27.50) - "C" Selection

I did not anticipate that Areyoutalkingtome would be the one running best late in the final leg of Saturday's sequence.  Which was rather unfortunate, as I did have the three prior winners on my main ticket.  But three out of four doesn't get it done, making Saturday a day for me to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the five runners to which I would have cashed in the final leg:

# 2 Trappezoid (2.60*) - $151.50 Finish: 3rd
# 3 Peppi the Hunter (5.20) - $154.00 Finish: 9th
# 6 The Queens Jules (4.00) - $184.20 Finish: 7th
# 8 Discreet Heat (20.00) - $959.10 Finish: 5th
# 9 Dexter Road (10.30) - $402.55 Finish: 10th

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  6 / 6 / 3 / 4  were rewarded with a payout of $1,225.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

5/9/20 Gulfstream Park Late Pick Four - Preview

“Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it.” - Salvador Dali

It's been exactly six months since I last handicapped a turf contest on this site; so it'll be interesting to see how I do with the pair of grass events contained within Saturday's sequence, including the featured Sunshine Forever Stakes.  So with that let's get to it, as I take a run at The Late Pick Four at Gulfstream Park.

RACE 9 - The Sunshine Forever $75k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Halladay (Morning Line 4-1)

B's

# 9 Social Paranoia (ML 3-1)
# 11 Admission Office (ML 5-2)

C's

# 2 Sand Dancer (ML 20-1)
# 3 El Tormenta (ML 12-1)
# 4 Aquaphobia (ML 10-1)
# 5 Cullum Road (ML 20-1)

# 7 Hawkish (ML 10-1)
# 10 Highland Sky (ML 15-1)

Scratch the Main Track Only entrant, # 1 Just Whistle (ML 8-1), as well as # 8 Regally Irish (ML 20-1), and # 12 War of Will (ML 10-1)

Those hoping to see War of Will compete Saturday will need to wait a little longer to watch him run, as Trainer Mark Casse has decided to point War of Will towards the Shoemaker Mile, scheduled to be held later this month at Santa Anita.

Halladay and Social Paranoia, both trained by Todd Pletcher, were each daylight winners last time out, and both appear to be entering Saturday's contest in top form.  Admission Office should benefit from the drop in class, as well as the turn back in distance.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 10 - OC 25k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Battle of Blenheim (ML 2-1)

B’s

# 5 Harbour Master (GB) (ML 12-1)

C's

# 1 Counter Offer (ML 8-1)
# 2 Stealth (ML 15-1)
# 3 Sublime Appeal (ML 12-1)
# 7 Basha (ML 20-1)
# 8 Gray's Fable (ML 5-1)
# 9 Honey Won't (ML 4-1)
# 10 Strong One (ML 30-1)
# 11 Shootin the Breeze (ML 8-1)
# 12 Surf Shack (ML 30-1)
# 13 Urban Light (Ire) (ML 20-1)

Scratch # 4 Extra Extra (ML 20-1); # 14 Christopher (ML 15-1); along with the Main Track Only entrants, # 15 Jay's Way (ML 7-2) and # 16 War Giant (ML 4-1)

Battle of Blenheim took the Place at this approximate class level last time out while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite.  Harbour Master (GB) could move up with the drop in class.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 11 - [S] OC 16k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 R Mercedes Boy (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 3 Tap It to Win (ML 5-1)
# 4 I'll Fight Dempsey (ML 3-1)

# 7 Hauntedbythemusic (ML 6-1)
# 8 Cryogenic (ML 10-1)

C's

# 1 Septemberten (ML 10-1)
# 9 Chinomadito (ML 30-1)
# 10 More Than Striking (ML 12-1)
# 11 Whiskey Sunrise (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 2 Unpublished (ML 20-1); # 6 Vincero (ML 12-1); and # 12 Game Boy Benny (ML 20-1)

R Mercedes Boy took the Place at this class level last time out.  Tap It to Win and I'll Fight Dempsey could both move up with the drop in class.

Hauntedbythemusic won by as many as he wanted in his debut last time out against open company non-Claiming Maidens.  Cryogenic has won at this class level on both turf and dirt; albeit while covering less ground.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 12 - Alw 8000s - OC 10k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 9 Dexter Road (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 2 Trappezoid (ML 5-1)
# 3 Peppi the Hunter (ML 9-5)
# 6 The Queens Jules (ML 4-1)
# 8 Discreet Heat (ML 20-1)

C's

# 1 The Robert (ML 12-1)
# 4 Areyoutalkingtome (ML 20-1)
# 5 Il Faraone (ML 15-1)
# 7 Mr Chaplin (ML 20-1)
# 10 Starship Apollo (ML 8-1)

# 11 She Takes Heart (ML 20-1)

Scratch # 12 Mr. Creative (ML 20-1)

This contest is a Starter Optional Claimer; an Optional Claimer / Starter Allowance hybrid, if you will.  Your horse is eligible to run here tag free if it is three years old or older and started for a claiming price of $8k or less in the past 366 days.  That's the Starter Allowance provision.  If your horse doesn't meet that condition, you can still run it here, but it will be eligible to be claimed for $10k.  Note that # 8 Discreet Heat is the only entrant here running with a price tag on his head; though I'm not sure why, as Discreet Heat has definitely run for a claiming price under $8k in the past twelve months.

Dexter Road and Trappezoid filled out the bottom two rungs of the Trifecta at this class level last time out.  Peppi the Hunter and The Queens Jules are two that have recently defeated Dexter Road; but it's my opinion that Dexter Road's steadily improving form makes him a more probable winner Saturday than those two.

Discreet Heat tends to run well over a fast dirt track.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 6 with 5 with 9 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 6,9,11 with 5,6 with 3,4,5,7,8 with 2,3,6,8,9 $75.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 6 with 6 with 5 with 1,4,5,7,10,11 $3.00

Total: $89.00

Post Time for Race 9 is 4:59 EDT / 1:59 PDT.  Good luck to all.

5/2/20 Oaklawn Park Late Pick Four - Results

Race 11 - The Arkansas Derby (First Division) - # 1 Charlatan (Final Odds 0.40*) - "A" Selection
Race 12 - The Oaklawn Handicap - # 12 By My Standards (4.50) - "C" Selection
Race 13 - The Arkansas Derby (Second Division) - # 5 Nadal (0.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 14 - # 9 Take Charge d'Oro (18.80) - "C" Selection

There's not much to say regarding the results of my play on Saturday, as I again found myself alive entering the final leg, only to fall short of cashing.  So I will instead use this space to congratulate the runners and connections who were victorious, and hope that Trainer Bob Baffert winning with three year olds on the first Saturday in May is a sign that things will soon be back to normal.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here is the $0.50 Will Pay for the runner to which I would have cashed in the final leg:

# 1 Dangerfield (5.40) - $68.10 Finish: 3rd

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  1 / 12 / 5 / 9  were rewarded with a payout of $232.25 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

5/2/20 Oaklawn Park Late Pick Four - Preview

“Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.” – Will Rogers

It's the first Saturday in May, and, needless to say, a lot has changed since the last first Saturday in May.  A lot.  But while it's not what we were expecting, there's no complaints as to what we have; for what we have Saturday is, not one, but two Derbies, as twenty-two entrants caused the good folks in Hot Springs to split their featured contest into two divisions.  So with that let's get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at Oaklawn Park.

RACE 11 - The Arkansas Derby (Grade 1) (First Division) - Nine Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Charlatan (Morning Line 1-1)

B's

None

C's

# 2 My Friends Beer (ML 20-1)
# 3 Mo Mosa (ML 30-1)
# 4 Gouverneur Morris (ML 9-2)

# 5 Jungle Runner (ML 30-1)
# 8 Anneau d'Or (ML 6-1)
# 9 Winning Impression (ML 15-1)
# 10 Crypto Cash (ML 20-1)

# 11 Basin (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 6 Shooters Shoot (ML 8-1) and # 7 Wrecking Crew (ML 20-1)

If you're going to single, it's best to do it in the opening leg and get it out of the way.  The only question in my mind with the Bob Baffert trained Charlatan is how he'll handle the distance; and I hope that if Charlatan struggles getting all nine furlongs, that he'll at least be so far in front that he'll still be un-catchable.   So Charlatan gets the solo spot on my main ticket, with all others being used as backup "C" Selections.

RACE 12 - The Oaklawn Handicap (Grade 2) - Nine Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Mr Freeze (ML 6-1)

B's

# 2 Trophy Chaser (ML 12-1)
# 7 Combatant (ML 4-1)
# 9 Tacitus (ML 9-2)

C's

# 1 Chess Chief (ML 30-1)
# 3 Bravazo (ML 30-1)
# 5 Identifier (ML 20-1)

# 6 Warrior's Charge (ML 8-1)
# 8 Sky Promise (ML 20-1)

# 10 Captivating Moon (ML 20-1)
# 11 Tax (ML 15-1)
# 12 By My Standards (ML 9-2)
# 13 Night Ops (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 14 Improbable (ML 8-1)

Mr Freeze has finished in the Trifecta in each of his last five Graded Stakes starts, and Mr Freeze appears to be entering this contest in top form for Trainer Dale Romans.  Trophy Chaser, winner of the Grade 3 Challenger last time out, fits well here with the contenders.

Combatant, winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap last time out, has been working well for this event.  Tacitus can be expected to improve with the return to the US.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 13 - The Arkansas Derby (Grade 1) (Second Division) - Nine Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Nadal (ML 5-2)

B's

# 4 King Guillermo (ML 3-1)
# 7 Silver Prospector (ML 10-1)
# 10 Farmington Road (ML 12-1)
# 11 Wells Bayou (ML 7-2)

C's

# 1 Finnick the Fierce (ML 15-1)
# 3 Storm the Court (ML 6-1)
# 6 Code Runner (ML 50-1)
# 9 Taishan (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 2 Saratogian (ML 50-1) and # 8 Fast Enough (ML 12-1)

Insert your favorite tennis pun here, as Nadal, undefeated in three career starts (including two Graded Stakes) looks to be best here.  King Guillermo, winner of the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby last time out on the front end, might actually be the one running best late; though Farmington Road also appears to be a candidate for that title.

Silver Prospector, winner of the Grade 3 Southwest two starts back, could improve off his last start with a cleaner trip.  Wells Bayou, winner of the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby and second behind Silver Prospector in the Southwest two starts back, has consistently run well over this track.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 14 - Alw 10000s - Fourteen Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Dangerfield (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 5 Carlos Sixes (ML 4-1)
# 7 Wickets Way (ML 8-1)
# 11 The Rouge Diesel (ML 15-1)
# 13 Curlin Grey (ML 10-1)
# 14 River Echo (GB) (ML 8-1)

C's

# 3 Stuart Hall (ML 20-1)
# 4 Magic Vow (ML 5-1)

# 6 Whole Lotta Luck (ML 20-1)
# 8 Ghostly Who (ML 12-1)
# 9 Take Charge d'Oro (ML 10-1)
# 10 Wild About You (ML 10-1)

# 12 She Might Tell (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 2 Hard to Impress (ML 50-1)

This is a pretty straight forward Starter Allowance, as far as conditions go, as any runner that has started for a claiming price of $10k or less, this year or last, is eligible to run here.

Dangerfield and Carlos Sixes are a pair of last out winners going for trainers (Jerry Hollendorfer and Karl Broberg, respectively) who tend to do well when going for two in a row.  Wickets Way, Show runner behind Dangerfield last time out, could improve with the added distance.

The Rouge Diesel won the running of this event last year, at a very nice price.  Curlin Grey seems well bred to run all day.  River Echo (GB) is going first off the claim for Trainer Cipriano Contreras, who tends to do well with such.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 1 with 4 with 5 with 1 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1 with 2,4,7,9 with 4,5,7,10,11 with 1,5,7,11,13,14 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,3,4,5,8,9,10,11 with 4 with 5 with 1 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 1 with 1,3,5,6,8,10,11,12,13 with 5 with 1 $4.50
$0.50 P4: 1 with 4 with 1,3,6,9 with 1 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 1 with 4 with 5 with 3,4,6,8,9,10,12 $3.50

Total: $75.00

Post Time for Race 11 is 6:29 EDT / 3:29 PDT.  Good luck to all.

5/1/20 Oaklawn Park Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - The Arkansas Breeders' Championship - # 11 Man in the Can (Final Odds 4.90) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - The Gardenia - # 2 Piece of My Heart (8.60) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - The Fantasy - # 3 Swiss Skydiver (16.10) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 6 Spend Spend Spend (2.00*) - "B" Selection

Having won the first three legs of the sequence only to lose the nightcap in each of my previous two publicized attempts at Oaklawn Park's Late Pick Four, I decided to switch things up a bit Friday and connect on the final three contests after failing to have to winner of the curtain jerker on my main ticket.  So that makes three tries in a row in which I've connected on three quarters of the sequence; and I'm sure you all already know how much that pays.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  11 / 2 / 3 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $2,123.35 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

5/1/20 Oaklawn Park Late Pick Four - Preview

“The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg.  It’s what you’re made of.  Not the circumstances.” - Anonymous

And so we arrive at the closing weekend for the meet at Hot Springs, with Friday's card featuring a trio of stakes, the most prominent being the Grade 3 Fantasy for three year old fillies.  I'll be taking a look at all three contests below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at Oaklawn Park.

RACE 7 - [S] The Arkansas Breeders' Championship $165k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 K J's Nobility (Morning Line 5-2)

B's

# 10 Glacken's Ghost (ML 15-1)

C's

# 1 Promising Shoes (ML 5-1)
# 2 Souixper Charger (ML 8-1)
# 4 Hamazing Vision (ML 9-2)
# 5 Prospector Fever (ML 8-1)
# 6 J. E.'s Handmedown (ML 15-1)
# 7 Destiny Way (ML 20-1)
# 8 Heritage Park (ML 20-1)
# 9 Bandit Point (ML 10-1)

# 11 Man in the Can (ML 6-1)

K J's Nobility has won three of his last four contests, including an open length victory last time out in the $100k Nodouble Breeders' Stakes (which, like today's contest, was restricted to state bred entrants only).  Glacken's Ghost, soundly defeated by K J's Nobility last time out, could turn the tables on that rival with the added distance.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 8 - (F) The Gardenia $80k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Gingham (ML 3-1)

B's

# 2 Piece of My Heart (ML 8-1)
# 5 Daphne Moon (ML 4-1)
# 7 Strong Flag (ML 9-2)
# 10 Antoinette (ML 8-1)

C's

# 4 Turnstone (ML 30-1)
# 8 Comical (ML 15-1)

# 11 His Glory (ML 8-1)
# 12 Shanghai Keely (ML 30-1)

Scratch # 1 Black Kat Taps (ML 30-1); # 6 Quick Decision (ML 12-1); # 9 Ice Princess (ML 10-1); # 13 Kiss the Girl (ML 30-1); and # 14 Punk Rock (ML 30-1)

Gingham took the Place behind Venetian Harbor last time out in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes at Santa Anita.  Piece of My Heart and Strong Flag filled out the Exacta over this main track against Optional Claiming company (OC 80k N2L) last time out, and both Piece of My Heart and Strong Flag have been progressing well so far in their respective three year old campaigns.

Daphne Moon could improve going second off the layoff.  Antoinette took the Show last time out in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 9 - (F) The Fantasy (Grade 3) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Venetian Harbor (ML 2-1)

B's

# 3 Swiss Skydiver (ML 6-1)
# 4 Lake Avenue (ML 15-1)
# 5 Harvey's Little Goil (ML 12-1)
# 10 British Idiom (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Ice Princess (ML 20-1)
# 6 Kansas Kis (ML 30-1)
# 7 Shedaresthedevil (ML 12-1)
# 8 Ring Leader (ML 30-1)
# 9 Lady Glamour (ML 50-1)
# 11 Fire Coral (ML 15-1)

# 12 New York Groove (ML 20-1)
# 13 Lazy Daisy (ML 20-1)
# 14 Alta's Award (ML 12-1)

Venetian Harbor, trained by Richard Baltas, won the Grade 2 Las Virgenes at Santa Anita last time out by as many as she wanted.  Swiss Skydiver led the field all the way around the track last time out while winning the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks by open lengths.

Though she was convincingly defeated in the Gulfstream Park Oaks by Swiss Skydiver, I'm going to use Lake Avenue on the main ticket because I think Lake Avenue can improve off that effort.  Harvey's Little Goil, trained by Bill Mott, seems to fit well with the contenders.

British Idiom was better than Swiss Skydiver by daylight in the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra back in February.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 10 - (F) OC 40k/N2X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Wholehearted (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 6 Spend Spend Spend (ML 7-2)
# 8 La Chancla (ML 4-1)

C's

# 3 Sara Sea (ML 15-1)
# 5 Rahway (ML 30-1)
# 9 Profound Legacy (ML 30-1)
# 10 Unique Factor (ML 12-1)
# 11 Raintree Starlet (ML 30-1)
# 12 Fugitive Lady (ML 30-1)
# 13 Stirred (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 1 Miss Imperial (ML 4-1); # 2 Violation (ML 30-1); # 4 Full of Grace (ML 8-1); and # 14 Timely Tradition

Wholehearted, winner of the $50k Wilma Mankiller at Will Rodgers Downs last time out, has finished in the Trifecta in eight of her ten career starts at Oaklawn Park.  Spend Spend Spend goes first off the claim for Trainer Richard Baltas, who tends to do well with such.

La Chancla, victorious by daylight the last time that she competed at today's distance, has been working well for Trainer Steve Asmussen in preparation for her 2020 debut.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries
