8/28/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 10 Vai (Final Odds 8.00) - No Selection
Race 8 - The Torrey Pines - # 8 Belvoir Bay (GB) (7.80) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 3 Prime Issue (5.10) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 3 Complimentary (1.50*) - "A" Selection

We used six of the nine runners who left the gate in the opening leg of the sequence, and yet still managed to have no part of the Quinella, as we completely whiffed on both Vai and runner up # 11 Bernina Star (50.30).  So the day held little suspense for us, as we learned early that we would be contributing instead of collecting.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  10 / 8 / 3 / 3  were rewarded with a payout of $643.20 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/28/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

For the second day in a row three quarters of Del Mar's final four races are devoted to those on the distaff side, including today's featured race, the Grade 3 Torrey Pines.  We'll be taking a look at each of those contests below, as we take another run at The Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Jeweled (Morning Line 5-2)
# 6 My Alchemist (ML 6-1)

B's

# 4 Mo'vette (ML 6-1)

C's

# 5 Go On Mary (ML 20-1)
# 7 Demigoddess (ML 12-1)
# 8 Mopotism (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 1 Spooky Woods (ML 9-2) and # 9 Jilly (No Line)

These are juveniles, with Jeweled, My Alchemist, and Demigoddess the only experienced runners in the field.  Jeweled, trained by Bob Baffert, got off a bit slow in her debut last time out (gee, doesn't that seem to be happening to an inordinate number of Baffert debut runners this Summer?) and then had a bit of a rough trip as she disappointed as the Post Time Favorite; so she's entitled to another look.

My Alchemist showed good early speed in her debut last time out.  Mo'vette has been working well for this.  Go On Mary and Mopotism are both trained by Doug O'Neill; Go On Mary has the better works, but Mopotism has the better bloodlines for precociousness.  Demigoddess took the Show in The Landaluce last time out.

RACE 8 - The Torrey Pines (Grade 3) - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Kay Kay (ML 8-1)
# 7 Bellamentary (ML 4-1)

B's

None

C's

# 4 Nine Point Nine (ML 20-1)
# 5 She's a Warrior (ML 6-1)
# 8 Belvoir Bay (GB) (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 1 Enola Gray (ML 4-5); # 2 Uptown Twirl (ML 15-1); and # 6 Dreamarcher (ML 15-1)

Needless to say, the scratch of Enola Gray earlier today totally changed the complexion of this event; not to mention the complexion of this handicapper, who had to go back to work restructuring his Pick Four tickets.

Kay Kay and Bellamentary were just a nose apart at the wire as they were watching Songbird's backside in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks.  The "C's" are everyone else in what is now just a five horse field.

RACE 9 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Prime Issue (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 1 Boy Howdy (ML 7-2)
# 2 Kristi's Copilot (ML 8-1)
# 4 Tribal Tribute (ML 5-1)
# 5 Ultimate Luck (ML 8-1)
# 9 Storm Comin Thru (ML 9-2)

C's

# 6 Preacher Roe (ML 8-1)
# 7 Accelerant (ML 8-1)
# 8 Ladies Man (ML 10-1)

Prime Issue is a Peter Miller re-claim, having run for the Miller barn back in June at Santa Anita.  That contest was the most recent race in which Prime Issue routed on the dirt, and he missed victory by just a head at this class level.

Boy Howdy tries two turns for the first time after taking the Show at this class level two starts back.  Kristi's Copilot took the Show at this approximate class level the last time that he routed on the dirt.

Tribal Tribute could win by the length of the stretch is he can bring his recent turf form over to the main track.  Ultimate Luck took the Show against classier foes last time out.  Storm Comin Thru took the Place at this class level last time out after leading most of the way.

Preacher Roe won at this class level last time out, albeit on the grass.  Accelerant is on the ticket because everyone else is.  Ladies Man misses by just a length of entering this contest with a three race winning streak.

RACE 10 - (F) Md $62.5k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Complimentary (ML 3-1)

B's

# 6 Tinderella (GB) (ML 4-1)
# 7 Sassy Ashley (ML 7-2)

C's

# 2 Lookinforadanger (ML 4-1)

Complimentary gave the best performance of her career last time out in her first try on the turf, and now drops in a for a tag for the first time in her career.  Tinderella (GB) took the Show against classier last time out while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite.

Sassy Ashley, like Complimentary, is also dropping in for a tag for the first time in her career; but the concern with Sassy Ashley is that the three weakest efforts of her career have also been her only three races over this turf course.  Lookinforadanger took the Place against more expensive last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,6 with 3,7 with 3 with 3 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,6 with 3,7 with 1,2,3,4,5,9 with 3,6,7 $54.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 5,7,8 with 3,7 with 3 with 3 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 4,5,8 with 3 with 3 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 3,7 with 6,7,8 with 3 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 3,7 with 3 with 2 $2.00

Total: $72.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:03 EDT / 5:03 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/27/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 3 Nodiac (Ire) (Final Odds 0.80*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The Generous Portion - # 3 Miss Sunset (0.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 2 Life's Blessing (0.70*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 6 Lord of Chaos (7.60) - No Selection

For the second consecutive Saturday we went into the finale holding three Aces, but failed to collect; as Lord of Chaos makes it two in a row by emerging victorious in his first try against winners.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the six runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 1 Temple Keys (3.40*) - $38.90 Finish: 2nd
# 4 Glory Bound (3.50) - $26.15 Finish: 5th
# 5 Anatolian Heat (4.60) - $33.55 Finish: 4th
# 7 American Aristocat (10.50) - $113.35 Finish: 9th
# 8 Matriculate (7.70) - $58.40 Finish: 7th
# 10 Sir Cal (18.10) - $137.85 Finish: 6th

Note that had Glory Bound crossed the wire first we would have collected three times his above listed payoff, as that victory would have allowed us to cash our one dollar "All A Entries" ticket in addition to our big ticket.

But such was not to be.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  3 / 3 / 2 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $48.75 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/27/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Fillies dominate the final four races on Saturday's Del Mar card, with three quarters of the last four events being for females that are either two are three years old.  We'll be taking a look at each of those contests below, as we take another run at The Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 80k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Nodiac (Ire) (Morning Line 5-2)

B’s

# 6 Sutton's Smile (ML 4-1)
# 7 Well Caught (Ire) (ML 10-1)
# 8 Do the Dance (ML 6-1)
# 13 Ok Doll (ML 8-1)

C's

# 4 Roo's Valentine (ML 20-1)

Scratch # 1 Friulian (ML 15-1); # 11 Lunar Express (ML 6-1); and # 14 Gone to Bali (ML 5-1).  Bring in # 12 Crimson and Gold (ML 15-1) and # 13 Ok Doll (ML 8-1), as those two will run.

Stakes placed Nodiac (Ire) gets some class relief off the freshening for Trainer Phil D'Amato.  Sutton's Smile, also trained by Phil D'Amato, took the Show at this class level last time out.  Well Caught (Ire) drops in class as well as cuts back in distance.

Do the Dance misses by less than a length of entering this contest with a three race winning streak.  Ok Doll was victorious last time out in her first ever try on the turf.  Roo's Valentine was a winner in her only prior try on this turf course.  Look for Roo's Valentine to try to steal it on the front end.

RACE 8 - [S] (F) The Generous Portion $150k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 You're Late (ML 9-5)
# 3 Miss Sunset (ML 8-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Dixie Chick Rocks (ML 3-1)
# 4 I'll Be Around (ML 12-1)
# 5 How About Zero (ML 6-1)
# 6 Rocketann (ML 15-1)

You're Late, trained by Jeff Bonde, is the only runner among these juvenile fillies with multiple wins.  Miss Sunset, also trained by Jeff Bonde, was impressive in winning her debut last time out.  The "C's" are everyone else.

RACE 9 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Lovely Linda (ML 7-2)
# 2 Life's Blessings (ML 5-2)
# 6 Americana (ML 3-1)

B's

None

C's

# 3 Soul Singer (ML 6-1)
# 8 Hansen Tale Blues (ML 10-1)
# 10 Beautiful Becca (ML 15-1)

Scratch all the Also Eligibles: # 11 Mopotism (ML 5-1); # 12 Go On Mary (ML 20-1); # 13 Lake Time (ML 4-1); and # 14 Demigoddess (ML 10-1)

Lovely Linda, one of just two experienced runners in this field (# 7 Princess Nicole (ML 20-1) is the other) showed good early speed in her debut last time out.  Life's Blessings is trained by Bob Baffert; Americana is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer; both Life's Blessings and Americana show sharp five furlong gate works the last time that they practiced over this main track.

Soul Singer, trained by Peter Miller, will be ridden by Victor Espinoza, who is having an excellent meet.  Hansen Tale Blues and Beautiful Becca are both by sires (Hansen and Elusive Quality, respectively) whose progeny tend to do well at first asking.

RACE 10 - [S] ALW N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A's

# 4 Glory Bound (ML 7-2)

B's

# 5 Anatolian Heat (ML 5-1)
# 8 Matriculate (ML 5-1)
# 10 Sir Cal (ML 20-1)

C's

# 1 Temple Keys (ML 9-2)
# 7 American Aristocat (ML 10-1)

Scratch all the Also Eligibles: # 11 Lindante (ML 8-1); # 12 Zip the Monkey (ML 4-1); # 14 Smokey's Legacy (ML 6-1); # 14 Ace Deuce (ML 20-1)

Glory Bound took the Show at this class level two starts back.  Anatolian Heat could steal this one on the front end.  Matriculate tries the grass for the first time after proving to be competitive at this approximate class level on the dirt.

Sir Cal had a sharp work over the main track on the 19th; don't know if the hood was on or off for that one, but perhaps the equipment change will be the difference maker.  Temple Keys could be the one running best late; but the rail draw is a concern.  American Aristocat could be rounding up into a big effort.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3 with 2,3 with 1,2,6 with 4 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,6,7,8,13 with 2,3 with 1,2,6 with 4,5,8,10 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4 with 2,3 with 1,2,6 with 4 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3 with 1,4,5,6 with 1,2,6 with 4 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 3 with 2,3 with 3,8,10 with 4 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3 with 2,3 with 1,2,6 with 1,7 $6.00

Total: $84.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:03 EDT / 5:03 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/21/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 9 Irish Freedom (Final Odds 1.10*) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - DEAD HEAT - # 3 Well Measured (9.40) - "C" Selection / # 4 Navy Hymn (4.90) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 8 Eric the Trojan (2.30*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 9 Finallygotabentley (5.60) - "C" Selection

We've seen this before: had 'em all, but not all on any one ticket.  Quite simply a day where we thought well enough of three of the winners to include them with the contenders, but not well enough of them to fit them onto our big ticket.  And for that reason, today was a day for us to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  9 / 3,4 / 8 / 9  were rewarded with a payout of $152.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/21/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

The Grade 2 Del Mar Mile is Sunday's featured race in Southern California; but we won't be examining that one below, as it comes during the earlier portion of the card, rather than as one of the final four races of the day.  What we will be analyzing is a mixture of old and young, as we  take another run at The Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Honor and Courage (Morning Line 3-1)
# 6 Dangerfield (ML 4-1)

B's

None

C's

# 5 Pacific Surf (ML 20-1)
# 7 Swinging Star (ML 12-1)
# 8 Royal Mo (ML 8-1)
# 9 Irish Freedom (ML 7-2)

Scratch # 4 The Rule of King's (ML 8-1), but don't bring in any of those on the Also Eligible list: # 11 What'sontheagenda (ML 5-2); # 12 Unbridled Envy (ML 20-1); # 13 T. Montana (ML 8-1); # 14 Oopper Wallah (ML 8-1), as they won't be competing in this event either.

Honor and Courage showed good early speed in his debut last time out when he left the gate as the Favorite, and runners for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer tend to move forward when making their second career start.  Dangerfield took the Place at this class level last time out, when he disappointed as the Post Time Favorite.  The "C" Selections for this juvenile contest are all first time starters who, in my opinion, could hit the wire first should both Honor and Courage and Dangerfield regress significantly off their prior efforts.

RACE 8 - OC 62k/N2X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Kentuckian (ML 5-2)
# 7 Guy Code (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 5 Celebrated Talent (ML 3-1)

C's

# 2 Texas Two Step (ML 4-1)
# 3 Well Measured (ML 6-1)

Kentuckian, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, is a Graded Stakes winner prepping in a non-stakes event.  Such are always troublesome when handicapping, because a horse like Kentuckian obviously wasn't brought back into training to compete at this level; his connections have their sights set much higher.  So you have to wonder just how much effort Kentuckian will be asked to give in this spot.  At his best, Kentuckian should out-class this field; but if he runs at less than his best, then this is a much more competitive contest.

Guy Code took the Place at this class level two starts back, and should improve with the freshening.  Celebrated Talent took the Show at this class level last time out, and could improve with the cutback in real estate.

Texas Two Step missed by less than a length at this class level two starts back, and could be the one running best late.  Well Measured moves up in class after winning easily against OC 40k/N1X competition.  Well Measured is a perfect two-for-two in his career over this main track.

RACE 9 - ALW N1X - Five Furlongs Turf

A's

# 8 Eric the Trojan (ML 5-2)

B's

# 1 Gutsy Ruler (ML 8-1)
# 4 Eltiojohnny (ML 6-1)
# 9 Love My Bud (ML 5-1)
# 10 Tiz a Billy (ML 5-1)

C's

# 5 Espirito Bueno (ML 8-1)
# 6 Schillairess (ML 7-2)

Scratch the Also Eligibles, # 11 My Samurai Warrior (ML 6-1) and # 12 Wildfire Kid (ML 4-1)

Eric the Trojan missed by less than a length at this class level last time out.  Gutsy Ruler looks to be quick enough to benefit from the rail draw.  Eltiojohnny was a multiple Allowance winner in Mexico City.  Eltiojohnny looks to be well bred for turf sprinting.

Love My Bud did well in his only prior turf start, sprinting down the hill at Santa Anita.  Tiz a Billy, stakes placed on the dirt, broke his maiden on the grass.  Espirito Bueno was a winner on this turf course last time out against state-bred only competition.  Schillairess may be out-classed here; but Schillairess, sired by Artie Schiller, deserves another look after the rough trip he had when disappointing as the Post Time Favorite last time out.

RACE 10 - Clm $8k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Pat the Bear (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 2 Ain't No Other (ML 5-1)
# 3 Celebrity Status (ML 5-1)

C's

# 9 Finallygotabently (ML 6-1)
# 10 Justification (ML 6-1)

Pat the Bear won by daylight at this class level last time out.  Ain't No Other and Celebrity Status took the Place and Show, respectively, competing against each other at this class level last time out; and both Ain't No Other and Celebrity Status will be going today first off the claim for trainers who tend to do well with such.

Finallygotabently drops in class while going first off the claim for Trainer Kristin Mulhall.  Justification took the Show at this class level two starts back, and took the Show against slightly more expensive stock last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,6 with 6,7 with 8 with 6 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 5,6,7 with 1,4,8,9,10 with 2,3,6 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 5,7,8,9 with 6,7 with 8 with 6 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 2,3 with 8 with 6 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 6,7 with 5,6 with 6 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 3,6 with 6,7 with 8 with 9,10 $4.00

Total: $63.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:03 EDT / 5:03 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

8/20/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 8 - The Del Mar Handicap - # 8 Ashleyluvssugar (Final Odds 2.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - The Pacific Classic - # 1 California Chrome (1.10*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 3 Into The Mystic (Ire) (3.40) - "A" Selection
Race 11 - # 7 Spud Spivens (15.70) - No Selection

We couldn't have asked for better positioning entering the final leg, holding three Aces and being alive to more than half the field; but we couldn't bring it home, as we had no part of the winner; nor, for that matter, of the runner-up, # 10 Gunslinger (4.80).

But as much as we love our bankroll and hate to see any of it depart, today was not really about us; but, rather, about California Chrome, who turned the star-studded Grade 1 Pacific Classic into a romp, proving that he is, indeed, the best horse currently in training.  Congrats to horse and connections, and good luck as they continue onto this year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the six runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 2 Carlsbad Mountain (3.70*) - $105.25 Finish: 5th
# 5 Arlington House (13.80) - $670.95 Finish: 8th
# 6 Alex Rossi (Arg) (5.20) - $158.35 Finish: 6th
# 8 Missing Groom (8.50) - $219.55 Finish: 7th
# 9 J Serino (13.00) - $450.90 Finish: 3rd
# 11 Mystery Train (Arg) (4.3) - $200.90 Finish: 4th

Note that had either Carlsbad Mountain or Alex Rossi (Arg) crossed the wire first we would have collected three times the above listed payoff for each, as a victory by either would have allowed us to cash our one dollar "All A Entries" ticket as well as our big ticket.

But such was not to be.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  8 / 1 / 3 / 7  were rewarded with a payout of $443.45 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/20/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Saturday's featured race at Del Mar, the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, just may prove to be the best non-Breeders' Cup race of 2016.  We'll be taking a look at it below, as we take another run at The Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 8 - The Del Mar Handicap (Grade 2) - Eleven Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Ashleyluvssugar (Morning Line 3-1)

B's

# 7 Flamboyant (Fr) (ML 7-2)
# 9 Finnegans Wake (ML 8-1)
# 10 El Huerfano (ML 20-1)

C's

# 2 Quick Casablanca (Chi) (ML 8-1)
# 3 Wasted Gardens (ML 12-1)
# 4 Metaboss (ML 4-1)

Ashleyluvssugar took the Place as the Morning Line Favorite in last year's running of this contest.  Last time out Ashleyluvssugar took the Place in the Grade 2 Eddie Read, a neck in front of Flamboyant (Fr).  Flamboyant, a multiple Graded Stakes winner on the grass, could move up today, going second off the return from Dubai; but the added distance is a concern.

Finnegans Wake could be the one running best late in a field dominated with closers.  El Huerfano, despite losing the hood, should still be the one leading the pack for most, if not all, of this contest.

Quick Casablanca (Chi) has proven that he can run all day; perhaps he gets a good trip on the inside.  Wasted Gardens is the horse for the course in this field, with three lifetime Wins over this patch of grass.  Metaboss looked sharp defeating OC 62k/N2X company last time out, after having disappointed in his four prior contests as the Post Time Favorite.

RACE 9 - The Pacific Classic (Grade 1) - Ten Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 California Chrome (ML 8-5)

B's

None

C's

# 2 Hoppertunity (ML 8-1)
# 7 Beholder (ML 3-1)
# 8 Dortmund (ML 5-2)

In a field filled with stars, California Chrome looks to be the best of the best.  Had he not drawn the rail, the decision to single California Chrome on our big ticket would have been much easier.  But even with the rail draw California Chrome should still be able to be in good position entering the first turn, as there is no early speed drawn to his immediate outside.

Hoppertunity could pull the upset should it all fall apart up front; but this track hasn't been very kind of late to late runners.  Dortmund gave California Chrome all he could handle last time out in the Grade 2 San Diego; but I think the added distance today is much to California Chrome's benefit.

Beholder won this contest last year, and a repeat of that effort could land her in the Winner's Circle again today.  But that's exactly what I think it would take for Beholder to win today: her repeating her career best effort, combined with California Chrome regressing off his current form.  So while I respect Beholder's chances of winning this event, I don't think the likelihood of her pulling off the upset (coupled with her likely odds) justifies doubling the cost of our big ticket.

RACE 10 - (F) OC 62k/C - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Into The Mystic (Ire) (ML 4-1)
# 9 Flamingo Lane (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 4 La Berma (Ire) (ML 9-2)
# 6 Castellani (ML 8-1)
# 8 B Rockett (ML 8-1)

C's

# 5 Minster'sadventure (ML 10-1)

Into the Mystic (Ire), an Allowance winner in France, makes her North American debut for Trainer Richard Mandella, who tends to do well with such.  Flamingo Lane has taken the Show at this class level in each of her last two races.

La Berma (Ire) should be forwardly placed early; though it would be nice to know what went wrong last time out.  Castellani just missed victory by a neck two starts back at this class level upstate.  B Rockett shows a steadily improving form over her last few races.  Minster'sadventure finished in the Quinella in each of her two prior career starts over this turf course.

RACE 11 - Clm $25k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Carlsbad Mountain (ML 7-2)
# 6 Alex Rossi (Arg) (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 5 Arlington House (ML 20-1)
# 8 Missing Groom (ML 6-1)
# 11 Mystery Train (Arg) (ML 5-1)

C's

# 9 J Serino (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 1 Ladies Man (ML 4-1) and # 12 Indygo Bo (ML 8-1)

Carlsbad Mountian goes first off the claim for Trainer Peter Miller, who tends to do well with such.  Carlsbad Mountain has won two of his career starts over this main track, and could be the speed of the speed in this contest.

Alex Rossi (Arg) took the Place against more expensive last time out.  Arlington House returns to California and could improve going second off the layoff.  Missing Groom drops in class for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Mystery Train (Arg) drops in for a tag for the first time since coming to the US.  J Serino drops into a more realistic class level.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 8 with 1 with 3,9 with 2,6 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 7,8,9,10 with 1 with 3,4,6,8,9 with 2,5,6,8,11 $50.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,3,4 with 1 with 3,9 with 2,6 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 2,7,8 with 3,9 with 2,6 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 1 with 5 with 2,6 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 1 with 3,9 with 9 $1.00

Total: $68.00

Post Time for Race 8 is 8:43 EDT / 5:43 PDT.  Good luck to all.

8/14/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 5 Hobbits Hero (Final Odds 3.50) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 8 American Gal (1.40*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The Solana Beach - # 11 Majestic Heat (1.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 3 Legitimate (1.30*) - "B" Selection

We found ourselves on the winning end of a photo finish, as Majestic Heat hit the wire just in front of # 9 Tiz A Kiss (14.60) to win The Solana Beach.  So that was nice, as our play would have ended then and there had that result been reversed.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other two runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 5 Star Express (5.60) - $103.20  Finish: 3rd
# 11 Awesome Image (2.80) - $67.75  Finish: 2nd

Note that had Awesome Image crossed the wire first we would have collected $203.25 ($67.75 x 3) as his victory would have allowed us to cash our one dollar "All A Entries" ticket as well as our big ticket.

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct Pick Four sequence of  5 / 8 / 11 / 3  which paid $47.40 for a fifty cent wager.  Since our investment was $65.00, we cash at a loss; and while that definitely beats not cashing at all, it certainly isn’t what we had in mind when we placed our wagers.

Ironically, our error lay in liking the final race winner, Legitimate, not enough or too much.  Had we thought enough of Legitimate to make him an "A" Selection we would have collected thrice, thus giving us a profit for the play.  However, had we though less of Legitimate and made him a "C" Selection we still would have collected (thanks to having "A" Selections win the other three legs) but our initial outlay would have been twenty-nine dollars less; which would have also made our play profitable.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/14/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

The Solana Beach, an event for state bred fillies and mares run on some California grass, is Sunday's featured race at Del Mar.  As it's one of the final four contests on the card we'll be taking a look at it below as we take another run at the Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 6 - ALW N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A's

# 5 Hobbits Hero (Morning Line 4-1)

B's

# 3 Act (ML 10-1)
# 4 Tuco (Ire) (ML 7-2)
# 7 Zinvor (ML 3-1)

C's

# 10 Reflected Star (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 1 Bronzino (Fr) (No Line); # 13 Da Jenius (ML 30-1); and # 14 Deep Consideration (ML 20-1)

Hobbits Hero took the Place on this turf course at this class level last time out, and may improve with the cutback in real estate.  Tuco (Ire) showed good form in each of his two prior North American starts, and could move forward off the freshening.  Act fits well with this field on class; the question for Act is how he will handle the added distance.

Zinov is two-for-two lifetime on this turf course.  Zinov also goes first off the claim for Trainer Mark Glatt, who tends to do well with such.  Reflected Star took the Show behind Zinov last time out, but the plethora of early speed in this contest may benefit late runner Reflected Star.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Grand Prix (ML 7-2)
# 8 American Gal (ML 5-2)

B's

# 4 Partyinthepaddock (ML 4-1)
# 5 Fact of Life (ML 4-1)
# 7 Cho Has Zip (ML 20-1)

C's

None

Scratch all the Also Eligibles: # 11 Soul Singer (ML 5-1); # 12 Lovely Linda (NL); # 13 Dumont (NL); and # 14 With Love (ML 5-1)

These are juveniles, and Grand Prix is the only entrant with any experience, having taken the Show at this class level in her debut last time out.  For the others, what I wrote regarding yesterday's Race 7 holds true for this contest as well: examine the sire and trainer stats with regard to debut runners; check the workouts for noticeable gaps in conditioning; and if you can afford it, just punch the "ALL" button.

RACE 8 - [S] (F) The Solana Beach $150k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 11 Majestic Heat (ML 5-2)

B's

# 3 Singing Kitty (ML 3-1)
# 6 Lily Kai (ML 5-1)

C's

# 1 Mangita (ML 20-1)

Scratch # 4 Minster'sadventure (NL)

Majestic Heat defeated open OC 62k/N2X company last time out by daylight.  Singing Kitty missed by victory by less than a length each of the last two times that she competed in a state bred only stakes.  Lily Kai is trained by Michael Machowsky, who is having a great meet thus far.  Mangita may improve with the return to state bred only competition.

RACE 9 - Md $20k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 11 Awesome Image (ML 4-1)

B's

# 3 Legitimate (ML 3-1)

C's

# 5 Star Express (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 8 Resistanceisfutile (ML 5-2)

Awesome Image ships in from upstate after taking the Place against more expensive stock.  Legitimate and Star Express have shown that they can compete at this class level; but they have also both shown a strong aversion to the Winner's Circle.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 5 with 1,8 with 11 with 11 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,5,7 with 1,4,5,7,8 with 3,6,11 with 3,11 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 10 with 1,8 with 11 with 11 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 5 with 1,8 with 1 with 11 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 5 with 1,8 with 11 with 5 $1.00

Total: $65.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:33 EDT / 4:33 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/13/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 9 Superior Status (Final Odds 14.80) - No Selection
Race 8 - The Best Pal - # 5 Klimt (1.00*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 Brainspin (9.80) - No Selection
Race 10 - # 5 X S Heat (10.80) - No Selection

Not a good day for the home team, as the only winner we catch in the sequence is the even money favorite.  Not much to say about such a performance except

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  9 / 5 / 4 / 5  were rewarded with a payout of $2,553.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/13/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Juveniles are at the forefront of Saturday's card at Del Mar, with the best of them (so far) competing in the Grade 2 Best Pal.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at the Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Big Gray Rocket (Morning Line 5-2)
# 8 Antioch (ML 6-1)

B's

# 3 Budokan (ML 8-1)
# 4 Gemstorm (ML 6-1)
# 7 Tybee Island (ML 3-1)
# 10 Cut (ML 20-1)

C's

None

Scratch the Also Eligible, # 11 T. Montana (ML 10-1), as he does not draw in.

These are all juveniles, and every runner in the field is a first time starter.  So what do you look for when making selections?  Personally, I focus on sire stats and trainer stats with debut runners.  I also check the workouts; not so much for recorded times, but primarily to see which runners have been working on a consistent schedule; that is, those showing very few (if any) noticeable extended breaks between dates worked.  Otherwise, these type races (where every runner is making their debut) are about as close to outright gambling as you can get when playing the horses (as opposed to playing a slot machine or the roulette wheel); and if you can do so while staying within your budget, you just might be better off punching the "ALL" button.

RACE 8 - The Best Pal (Grade 2) - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Klimt (ML 9-5)

B's

# 6 Big League (ML 2-1)

C's

# 4 Thirstforlife (ML 5-2)

Klimt, trained by Bob Baffert, was much improved last time out, graduating in his second career start.  Big League was impressive winning his debut last time out.  Thirstforlifewas, shipping in from Kentucky, showed the ability to pass other runners on his way to victory last time out; a trait that is always nice to see in juveniles.

RACE 9 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Fantasy of Luck (ML 7-2)
# 6 Mysterious Miracle (ML 9-2)

B’s

None

C's

# 9 Call to Congrats (ML 8-1)
# 11 Ashley's Sassy (ML 5-1)
# 12 Street Surrender (ML 12-1)

Fantasy of Luck moves up to open company after showing steady improvement in her races this year against state bred only competition.  Mysterious Miracle took the Place at this class level last time out.

Call to Congrats took the Place at this class level two starts back, and now goes first time for the barn of Trainer Phil D'Amato, who tends to do well with such (as well as those, like Call to Congrats, who are returning from an extended layoff).  Ashley's Sassy could improve with the return to one-turn sprinting on dirt.  Street Surrender, who won her debut by coming off the pace, has found herself caught in a pace battle in each of her next three starts.  Perhaps today, with the wide draw, Street Surrender will hang back early and swoop in late.

RACE 10 - (F) MSW - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Georgia Blue (ML 6-1)
# 10 Special Gal (ML 7-2)

B's

# 1 Exuberante (GB) (ML 5-1)
# 3 Onzaway (ML 9-2)

C's

None

Scratch # 2 Kihei Sunset (ML 5-1)

Georgia Blue took the Place at this class level last time out, and she could find herself all alone on the front end for most, if not all, of this contest.  Special Gal, trained by Phil D'Amato, tries some California grass for the first time after finishing within two lengths of the winner on dirt in her debut last time out.

Exuberante (GB) finished in the Trifecta at this class level two and three starts back, before trying stakes company last time out.  Onzaway hit the wire just two lengths behind the winner last time out at this class level, and seems capable of moving forward with the added distance today.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2,8 with 5 with 5,6 with 8,10 $8.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,4,7,8,10 with 5,6 with 5,6 with 1,3,8,10 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,8 with 4 with 5,6 with 8,10 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 2,8 with 5 with 9,11,12 with 8,10 $6.00

Total: $66.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:03 EDT / 5:03 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/7/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 4 Tribal Jewel (Final Odds 2.40) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - The Osunitas - # 2 Sobradora Inc (Arg) (9.20) - No Selection
Race 8 - # 8 Dis Smart Cat (2.40) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 9 Midnight Swinger (2.50) - "A" Selection

On the one hand, we managed to use five of the eight runners in The Osunitas without landing on the winner; not exactly stellar handicapping on our part.  On the other hand, one of our "B" Selections in that contest, # 5 Prize Exhibit (GB) (9.90), despite being boxed in and having to be steadied, was only a half length behind Sobradora Inc at the wire (those curious as to what a half length looks like in a photo finish can click here) with # 3 Elektrum (Ire) (2.50), another of our "B" Selections, crossing the wire just a nose behind Prize Exhibit.  So we were close; but, as you all already know, close doesn't get it done.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  4 / 2 / 8 / 9  were rewarded with a payout of $238.35 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/7/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

The Osunitas, a restricted stakes for fillies and mares on the turf, is Sunday's featured race at Del Mar.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at the Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 6 - OC 40k/N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Saint Dermot (Morning Line 5-2)

B’s

# 4 Tribal Jewel (ML 3-1)

C's

# 2 Go Long (4-1)
# 3 Foxtrot Romeo (Ire) (ML 5-1)
# 5 Got Even (ML 5-1)

Saint Dermot and Tribal Jewel crossed the wire one-two (respectively) last time out in The Bottom Line Starter Handicap.  Tribal Jewel has lost ground in the stretch in each of his last three races; but Tribal Jewel is the only runner in this field with multiple victories over this main track.

Go Long goes first off the claim for Trainer John Sadler, who is having an excellent meet.  Foxtrot Romeo (Ire) ships in from upstate; his work on the 3rd suggests that Foxtrot Romeo should take well to this track.  Got Even is probably the best horse in this field, so I can't leave him completely off my ticket; but Got Even has proven to be extremely camera shy while scooping up a plethora of minor awards.

RACE 7 - [R] (F) The Osunitas$75k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 7 Havanna Belle (Ire) (ML 6-1)
# 8 Entrechat (ML 5-1)

B's

# 1 Juno (Brz) (ML 9-2)
# 3 Elektrum (Ire) (ML 5-2)
# 5 Prize Exhibit (GB) (ML 7-2)

C's

None

This contest is restricted to fillies and mares that have not won a stakes in 2016 (except for state bred) where the distance was eight furlongs or more AND the winner's share of the purse was $50k or more.

Havanna Belle (Ire) has been over-matched in her recent Graded Stakes tries; but Havanna Belle seems to fit well at this level.  Entrechat did well in her stretchout over this turf course last time out, and should be forwardly placed.

Juno (Brz) could be speed on the rail on a turf course that seems to favor early speed.  Elektrum (Ire) and Prize Exhibit (GB) are the classiest runners in this field, but both could be compromised their late running style.

RACE 8 - [S] (F) OC 20k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Chao Chom (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 8 Dis Smart Cat (ML 9-2)

C's

# 2 Yodelsong (ML 8-1)
# 3 Plane Lucky (ML 5-1)
# 5 Q' Viva (ML 8-1)
# 6 Surfing the Menu (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 4 Easter Fever (ML 12-1)

Chao Chom took a big step forward while graduating in her second career start last time out.  Dis Smart Cat has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of her last two starts.  Yodelsong could be the one running best late in a field that seems to be loaded with early speed.

Plane Lucky won by the length of the stretch last time out in her first start for Trainer Richard Baltas.  Q' Viva has finished in the Trifecta in each of her six career starts over this main track.  Surfing the Menu has shown a steadily improving form in each of her 2016 starts.

RACE 9 - (F) Md $75k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 5 Lookinforadanger (ML 8-1)
# 9 Midnight Swinger (ML 3-1)

B's

# 3 Angel On Point (ML 8-1)
# 4 Sweet Treat (ML 5-1)
# 6 Tinderella (GB) (ML 5-2)

C's

# 2 Carnival Lights (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 1 Sapodilla (ML 12-1)

Lookinforadanger, Midnight Swinger, and Angel On Point all exit the same last out contest where Midnight Swinger missed graduation by just a neck.  Expect Lookinforadanger and Angel On Point to be forwardly placed on a turf course that has been favoring early speed.

Sweet Treat tries the turf for the first time; as a daughter of Candy Ride (Arg) and a Storm Cat mare, Sweet Treat could move forward with the move off the main track.

Tinderella (GB) drops in for a tag for the first time since coming to North America.  Carnival Lights could come swooping in late if it all falls apart up front.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 7,8 with 1 with 5,9 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,6 with 1,3,5,7,8 with 1,8 with 3,4,5,6,9 $50.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,3,5 with 7,8 with 1 with 5,9 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 7,8 with 2,3,5,6 with 5,9 $8.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 7,8 with 1 with 2 $1.00

Total: $69.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:33 EDT / 4:33 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/6/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 10 Curlin Rules (Final Odds 5.30) - No Selection
Race 8 - # 7 Straight Fire (0.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - The La Jolla - # 1 Free Rose (28.90) - No Selection
Race 10 - # 8 Rideo (4.20) - "A" Selection

We had no part of either of the grass winners (Curlin Rules and Free Rose) each of whom led their respective fields all the way around the track; and, to be honest, if you had told me before the start of each of those two events that the eventual winner was going to lead the pack from gate to wire, I still probably wouldn't have had those two on my ticket, as neither looked to be the probable front runner in their respective contests.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  10 / 7 / 1 / 8  were rewarded with a payout of $1,327.35 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/6/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

The Grade 3 La Jolla is today's featured race at Del Mar; we'll be taking a look at it below, as we take another run at the Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - OC 80k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Bombard (Morning Line 3-1)
# 5 Tristan's Trilogy (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 3 Alaskan Son (Ire) (ML 7-2)
# 8 Chewy Round Town (Ire) (ML 20-1)
# 9 Lauren's Lad (ML 5-1)

C's

# 4 Trinitas Soldier (ML 12-1)
# 7 Annie's Candy (ML 15-1)

Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 11 Mishegas (ML 11-1) and # 12 Arcature (ML 4-1)

There are four here that are exiting the same OC 75k/N1X from July 16; and it's not easy to determine exactly what to make of that contest.  Bombard and Trintas Soldier crossed the line virtually simultaneously in that event; but Trintas Soldier had the much smoother trip.  Lauren's Lad was steadied in the stretch; but Lauren's Lad may have already been out of it at that point.  Chewy Round Table (Ire) was never really in that race, but I think Chewy Round Table deserves another chance as he didn't show any of his usual front-running style.

Tristan's Trilogy missed winning The Singletary by just a head two starts back.  Alaskan Son (Ire), trying winners for the first time, is the only runner here with a victory over this turf course.  Annie's Candy makes a quick return to competition after taking the Show in a sprint just last week.

RACE 8 - MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Straight Fire (ML 8-5)

B's

# 4 Excavation (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Plum Dandy (ML 10-1)
# 6 Saldamente (ML 8-1)
# 9 James River (ML 5-1)

Straight Fire took the Place in his debut at this class level last time out; the only question is how Straight Fire will handle the additional real estate that he'll have to cover today.  Excavation took the Show at this class level in his debut last time out.

Plum Dandy, Saldamente, and James River are a trio of first time starters. Plum Daddy is trained by Simon Callaghan, who tends to do well when sending out runners for their debut.  Saldamente had a sharp work over this main track back on the 7/30.  James River, trained by Bob Baffert, was sired by Union Rags, whose progeny have shown themselves to be ready to roll at first asking, in a limited sample size.

RACE 9 - The La Jolla (Grade 3) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Monster Bea (ML 5-2)

B's

# 4 Dressed in Hermes (ML 8-1)
# 5 Mr. Roary (ML 20-1)
# 6 Lucky Bryan (ML 9-2)

C's

# 3 Moonlight Drive (Ity) (ML 3-1)
# 9 Ebadan (Ire) (ML 12-1)

Monster Bea won The Oceanside over this turf course last time out.  Dressed in Hermes is the only prior Graded Stakes winner in this field.  Mr. Roary won The Rainbow two starts back.  Lucky Bryan has displayed a steadily improving form in his 2016 starts.

Moonlight Drive (Ity) was a well beaten second behind Monster Bea last time out in the Oceanside; but it's possible that Moonlight Drive may move up going second off the layoff; while  Ebadan (Ire), who was never a factor in The Oceanside, may just have not felt like running that day.

RACE 10 - Md $20k - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Rideo (ML 3-1)

B's

# 5 Yet Another Nate (ML 6-1)
# 9 Alaskan Cruise (ML 5-2)

C's

# 6 Cause I'm Bad (ML 12-1)
# 7 Woodstock Memory (ML 10-1)
# 10 Gavination (ML 5-1)

Rideo took the Show at this class level last time out, and now goes first off the claim for Trainer Doug O'Neill.  Yet Another Nate could be quickest early.  Alaskan Cruise took the Place at this class level last time out.

Cause I'm Bad drops in class and switches surfaces after showing nothing last time out in his debut.  Woodstock Memory flashed some early foot last time out before fading.  Gavination has proven to be competitive, albeit camera shy, at this class level.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2,5 with 7 with 8 with 8 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,5,8,9 with 4,7 with 4,5,6,8 with 5,8,9 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4,7 with 7 with 8 with 8 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 2,5 with 1,6,9 with 8 with 8 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 2,5 with 7 with 3,9 with 8 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 2,5 with 7 with 8 with 6,7,10 $3.00

Total: $71.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:03 EDT / 5:03 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
