3/30/19 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

“Starting over is an acceptance of a past we can’t change, an unrelenting conviction that the future can be different, and the stubborn wisdom to use the past to make the future what the past was not.” - Craig D. Lounsbrough

Santa Anita was able to renew its meet Friday; and, thank the good Lord, all went well without incident.  So as re-opening weekend continues, we turn our attention to Saturday's events, which features a quartet of Graded Stakes; two of which I'll be taking a look at below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 7 - (F) The Santa Ana (Grade 2) - Ten Furlongs Turf

A's

# 7 Zaffinah (Ire) (Morning Line 4-1)

B's

# 2 Streak of Luck (ML 3-1)
# 4 Poster Girl (GB) (ML 8-1)

# 6 Elysea's World (Ire) (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Stradella Road (ML 6-1)
# 3 Lynne's Legacy (ML 8-1)
# 5 India Mantuana (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 8 Tell Me More (ML 10-1)

Zaffinah (Ire) took the Show in the Grade 3 Megahertz last time out, and could move up with the increase in real estate.  Streak of Luck, Place finisher in the Grade 2 Buena Vista last time out, is another that could improve stretching out.

Poster Girl (GB) ran incredibly well in the Wishing Well last time out; but, unfortunately, only after dumping Jockey Mike Smith to the ground.  Elysea's World (Ire) could be the one running best late.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 8 - OC 62.5k/N2X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Air Strike (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 1 Pepe Tono (ML 12-1)
# 3 Popular Kid (ML 3-1)

# 6 Kenjisstorm (ML 6-1)
# 8 Nero (ML 9-5)

C's

# 2 Top of the Game (ML 12-1)
# 4 Sheer Flattery (ML 12-1)
# 5 El Huerfano (ML 12-1)
# 9 Morse Code (ML 15-1)

Air Strike, making his 2019 debut, fits well here on class, and should be able to get a nice staking trip.  Pepe Tono has taken the Show at this class level in two of his last three races; but the rail draw does Pepe Tono no favors, as he has no early speed.  I expect Pepe Tono and Popular Kid to be the ones running best late.

Kenjisstorm could improve with the class relief.  Nero, trained by Bob Baffert, failed by a neck as the Post Time Favorite at this class level last time out.  The concern with Nero is that he appears to need to be right on the pace in order to win; and there seem to be others in  today's field who will be quicker than Nero out of the gate.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 9 - (F) The Beholder Mile (Grade 1) - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A's

# 5 Marley's Freedom (ML 4-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Secret Spice (ML 6-1)
# 2 Selcourt (ML 5-1)
# 3 Paradise Woods (ML 6-1)

# 4 Exuberance (ML 15-1)
# 6 Just a Smidge (ML 10-1)
# 7 Mopotism (ML 6-1)

I mentioned last weekend that Heavenhasmynikki, entered to run in the $100k Harry Henson at Sunland Park, had scratched from that contest with the expectation that she would run here instead.  However, as you can see above, Heavenhasmynikki is not in this field; which is unfortunate.

Among those who are expected to run, Marley's Freedom looks to be much the best.  So I'll be using Marley's Freedom as a single on the main ticket, with all others in this field slotted in as backup "C" Selections.

RACE 10 - (F) MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 13 Holly Hundy (ML 5-2)

B's

# 1 Claudelle (ML 8-1)
# 2 La Shirimp (ML 3-1)
# 3 Harmless (ML 10-1)
# 5 Ameerah B (ML 8-1)
# 6 Cairo Kiss (ML 15-1)

# 7 Hello Bubbles (ML 7-1)
# 10 Enamored (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 Crazy Sexy Munny (ML 20-1)
# 8 Shanghai Truffles (ML 20-1)
# 9 Confidently (ML 8-1)

# 12 Clochard Street (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 11 Heathers Grey (ML 20-1) and # 14 Posit (ML 4-1)

Holly Hundy showed good early speed routing on the flats last time out.  Claudelle fits well with these on class, though Claudelle is trying the turf for the first time.

La Shirimp, making the first start of her 2019 campaign, ran well in her debut in Ireland last time out.  Harmless was quick early in her first try charging down the hill last time out, and could be more relaxed today with the hood removed.

Ameerah B and Cairo Kiss are a pair of first time starters that could upset a field that seems to lack a true standout.  Hello Bubbles has twice taken the Show at this class level.  Enamored could improve with the freshening.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 7 with 7 with 5 with 13 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,4,6,7 with 1,3,6,7,8 with 5 with 1,2,3,5,6,7,10,13 $80.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,3,5 with 7 with 5 with 13 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 7 with 2,4,5,9 with 5 with 13 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 7 with 1,2,3,4,6,7 with 13 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 7 with 5 with 4,8,9,12 $2.00

Total: $89.50

Post Time for Race 7 is 7:28 EDT / 4:28 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

3/24/19 Sunland Park All-Stakes Pick Four - Results

Race 8 - The Harry Henson - # 6 Escape Clause (Final Odds 0.60*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - The Sunland Park Oaks - # 7 Chasing Yesterday (0.05*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - The Bill Thomas Memorial - # 9 All Out Blitz (2.60) - "B" Selection
Race 11 - The Sunland Park Derby - # 5 Cutting Humor (2.30) - "B" Selection

What to take away from the Sunland Park Derby?  Well, the Todd Pletcher trained Cutting Humor rebounded well from his disappointing effort in the Southwest.  # 2 Anothertwistafate (3.50) showed that he can compete at this level on real dirt, crossing under the wire just a neck behind Cutting Humor.  Meanwhile, yet another favored Bob Baffert runner on the Kentucky Derby trail disappointed; as # 1 Mucho Gusto (0.90*) was about a half dozen lengths back when the Win photo was being snapped.

Still, Sunday wasn't a total loss for Baffert, as Chasing Yesterday won the Sunland Park Oaks by daylight.  Likewise, Sunday wasn't a total loss for me; though the net result wasn't good.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other two runners to which I would have cashed in the Sunland Park Derby:

# 1 Mucho Gusto (0.90*) - $7.60 Finish: 3rd
# 2 Anothertwistafate (3.50) - $25.55 Finish: 2nd

But that's what might have been.  What actually came to be was a correct Late Pick Four sequence of  6 / 7 / 9 / 5  which paid $18.75 for a fifty cent wager; an amount which is somewhat less than my initial investment of $29.50.  Granted, cashing at a loss definitely beats not cashing at all; but it's certainly not what I had in mind when I placed my bets.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

3/24/19 Sunland Park All-Stakes Pick Four - Preview

The Road to the Kentucky Derby passes thru New Mexico Sunday; Sunland Park, to be exact, just minutes away from downtown El Paso, Texas.  Note that this sequence isn't The Late Pick Four, as Sunday's card contains thirteen races; so there is another Pick Four on the menu, for those who prefer a sequence not containing the Harry Henson Handicap.  So with all that let's get to it, as I take a run at The All-Stakes Pick Four at Sunland Park.

RACE 8 - (F) The Harry Henson $100k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

 # 6 Escape Clause (Morning Line 5-2)

B's

# 4 Clever Serve (ML 5-1)

C's

# 2 Baydar (ML 6-1)
# 3 Jet Away Sue (ML 8-1)
# 5 The Incident (ML 8-1)
# 7 Super Humor (ML 10-1)
# 9 Performance Review (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 1 Heavenhasmynikki (ML 2-1) and # 8 Just a Smidge (ML 4-1)

Needless to say, the scratch of Morning Line Favorite 1 Heavenhasmynikki (who is expected to run in the Beholder Mile next Saturday) certainly changes the complexion of this event.  Escape Clause showed very little last time out in the Grade 2 Santa Monica after winning the Grade 3 La Canada for fun two starts back.  So the question with Escape Clause is can she bounce back off that disappointing effort.

Clever Serve could improve going third off the layoff.  Clever Serve also looks to be the one that will be running best late.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 9 - (F) The Sunland Park Oaks $200k - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A's

# 7 Chasing Yesterday (ML 9-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Victim of Love (ML 4-1)
# 2 Parade of Roses (ML 10-1)
# 3 Figure (ML 12-1)

# 4 Peaceoutyourhonor (ML 30-1)
# 5 Backflash (ML 6-1)
# 6 K P Slickem (ML 8-1)
# 8 Enlisting (ML 5-1)

Scratch # 9 Bellafina (ML 7-5)

Another scratch of a Morning Line Favorite, as Bellafina's connections decide to keep her home in California.  With that change, the Bob Baffert trained Chasing Yesterday, winner of the Grade 1 Starlet and making her 2019 debut, looks to be much the best here, and therefore will be my big ticket single, with all others being used as backup "C" Selections.

RACE 10 - The Bill Thomas Memorial $100k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Chief Cicatriz (ML 3-1)

B's

# 2 Anyportinastorm (ML 4-1)
# 4 Classy Class (ML 10-1)
# 5 Secular Nation (ML 10-1)
# 8 Minister of Soul (ML 6-1)
# 9 All Out Blitz (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Limitation (ML 8-1)
# 6 Bokeelia Island (ML 15-1)
# 7 Blame Smarty (ML 20-1)

Chief Cicatriz won easily enough in his 2019 debut last time out to suggest that he's ready to pick up right where he left off last year.  Anyportinastorm showed that he can handle the dirt well enough last time out by clearly winning the $100k Zia Park Sprint; but that was back in November, and it's possible that Anyportinastorm could need a race.

Classy Class and Secular Nation probably aren't classy enough for this bunch; but both ran well in their respective last out race, and I'm using few enough runners in the other contests that it makes sense to have them around to see if I can perhaps catch a price.

Minister of Soul has won four of his last five starts; though it may prove telling that the one bad outing in that sequence is also Minister of Soul's only prior try over this track.  All Out Blitz could rebound going third off the layoff.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 11 - The Sunland Park Derby (Grade 3) - Nine Furlongs Dirt

A's

# 1 Mucho Gusto (ML 8-5)

B's

# 2 Anothertwistafate (ML 3-1)
# 5 Cutting Humor (ML 8-1)

C's

# 3 Hustle Up (ML 5-1)
# 4 Wicked Indeed (ML 6-1)
# 6 Walker Stalker (ML 15-1)
# 7 Pasamonte Man (ML 20-1)
# 8 Collusionist (ML 25-1)

# 10 Eye Cloud (ML 30-1)

Scratch # 9 Diamond Blitz (ML 15-1)

The first thing to note is the name change for this event.  Known as the WinStar Derby for the first half dozen years of its existence (2003 - 2008, inclusive), this contest has been called the Sunland Derby since 2009; but this year its official title is the Sunland Park Derby.

Mucho Gusto showed last time out in the Grade 3 Robert B Lewis that he can win by coming off the pace as well as on the front end.  Anothertwistafate, winner of the El Camino Real Derby last time out, gets another chance to prove that he can be competitive on a real dirt track.

Cutting Humor, who disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in the Grade 3 Southwest last time out, could improve going third off the layoff.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 7 with 3 with 1 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,6 with 7 with 2,3,4,5,8,9 with 1,2,5 $18.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,3,5,7,9 with 7 with 3 with 1 $2.50
$0.50 P4: 6 with 1,2,3,4,5,6,8 with 3 with 1 $3.50
$0.50 P4: 6 with 7 with 1,6,7 with 1 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 6 with 7 with 3 with 3,4,6,7,8,10 $3.00

Total: $29.50

Post Time for Race 8 is 5:57 EDT / 2:57 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

3/16/19 Turfway Park Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - # 7 Karas (Final Odds 4.00) - "B" Selection
Race 6 - # 5 Straitouttapopcorn (1.00*) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 6 Mine N Yours (6.80) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - # 6 Oh John (1.80*) - "B" Selection

There's a word for when you hit the "ALL" button in a contest, as I did in Saturday's second leg, just to see the even-money Favorite get under the wire first; a word which I'll refrain from using here.  Anyway, there's no guarantee that freeing up those slots that I wasted in the second leg would have allowed me to make room on the big ticket for Mine N Yours, winner of the third leg; as Mine N Yours had finished behind others in Race 7 in his prior start, and two starts back failed to graduate over this main track against cheaper stock.  So no matter how you slice it, the bottom line is that Saturday was a day for me to contribute instead of collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  7 / 5 / 6 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $197.45 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

3/16/19 Turfway Park Late Pick Four - Preview

"The best luck of all is the luck you make for yourself." - Douglas MacArthur

Greetings one and all on this Saint Patrick's Day weekend.  As the situation with California horse racing remains in a state of flux, I thought it might be a good idea to try my hand in another state.  So with that, let's turn our attention to Florence, Kentucky, as I take a run at The Late Pick Four at Turfway Park.

RACE 5 - Md $7.5k - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 1 Loud Brand (Morning Line 7-2)

B's

# 2 Discreet Technique (ML 5-2)
# 7 Karas (ML 4-1)
# 9 Rock Werks (ML 12-1)

C's

# 3 Russian to Tapit (ML 12-1)
# 4 Harlinsdale (ML 5-1)
# 5 Road to Cairo (ML 8-1)
# 6 Signsofawarrior (ML 20-1)

# 8 Pepper's Concord (ML 6-1)

Loud Brand, Discreet Technique, and Karas all exit a common race at this class level; and while Discreet Technique and Karas crossed the wire about a length in front of Loud Brand in that contest, I think Loud Brand has the better chances Saturday, as he projects to be speed on the rail.

Along with the above trio I'll also be using first time starter Rock Werks on the big ticket, as none of the experienced runners in this field were within ten lengths of the winner at the wire last time out.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 6 - (F) ALW N3L - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A's

# 2 Ethyl Ether (ML 2-1)

B's

# 1 Momenta Kat (ML 12-1)
# 3 Flawsome (ML 8-1)
# 5 Straitouttapopcorn (ML 5-2)
# 6 Starving Artist (ML 9-5)

C's

None

Scratch # 4 Sugar Shack (ML 8-1)

Ethyl Ether has failed as the Post Time Favorite in each of her last three races; which should probably be a giant red flag regarding using her as my "A" Selection here.  But it's pretty clear to me that Ethyl Ether is the most talented runner in this field, which makes it difficult to slot her anywhere other than the top spot in my picks.

Flawsome took the Show behind Ethyl Ether last time out.  Straitouttapopcorn, another who disappointed as the Post Time Favorite last time out, could improve with the stretch out in distance.  Starving Artist is trying a synthetic track for the first time; but if Starving Artist can take to the surface, then she could do well here with the class relief.  Momenta Kat is on the big ticket because everyone else is.

RACE 7 - Md $15k - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 7 My Kinda Kid (ML 7-2)

B's

# 4 Crescent Warrior (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Tommy C Me (ML 7-2)
# 2 Sir Yarnallton (ML 6-1)
# 3 Celestial Orb (ML 5-1)
# 5 Roaring Ocean (ML 15-1)
# 6 Mine N Yours (ML 5-1)
# 8 Eagle Two (ML 12-1)

Sir Yarnallton drops back down to a more realistic class level.  My Kinda Kid and Crescent Warrior filled out the bottom two slots of the Trifecta at this class level last time out; though it could be argued that My Kinda Kid and Crescent Warrior have already had more than enough chances to graduate.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 8 - Clm $5k N3L - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 4 Fearless Kitty (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 6 On John (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Southern Cross (ML 15-1)
# 2 Jennysregalman (ML 5-1)
# 3 Vreeland (ML 15-1)
# 5 Hoosier Zip (ML 4-1)
# 7 Rontos Society (ML 12-1)
# 8 Silver Forked Sky (ML 30-1)
# 9 Balizar (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 10 Ain't in No Hurry (ML 30-1)

Fearless Kitty took the Place at this class level while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite last time out.  On John could improve going third off the layoff.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 1 with 2 with 7 with 4 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,7,9 with ALL with 4,7 with 4,6 $40.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,4,5,6,8 with 2 with 7 with 4 $2.50
$0.50 P4: 1 with 2 with 1,2,3,5,6,8 with 4 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 1 with 2 with 7 with 1,2,3,5,7,8,9 $3.50

Total: $50.00

Post Time for Race 5 is 8:12 EDT / 5:12 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

3/9/19 Golden Gate Fields Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 5 Brilliant Richie (Final Odds 1.60*) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - # 5 California Canter (4.00) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 5 Drinkin and Dialin (1.50*) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 1 Builder (5.70) - "C" Selection

The Finish Line in the nightcap proved to be a couple of strides too late in arriving, as # 8 Katie's Cowboy (2.40) had the lead in the stretch, but was just a neck too slow in getting under the wire.  And that neck was the difference Saturday between me cashing and trashing, as the other three victors in the sequence were all to be found on my main ticket.

Oh well; onto the next race.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the three runners to which I would have cashed in the finale:

# 2 Concur (2.00*) - $142.30 Finish: 8th
# 3 Mr. Gee's Journey (3.00) - $133.25 Finish: 3rd
# 8 Katie's Cowboy (2.40) - $142.10 Finish: 2nd

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  5 / 5 / 5 / 1  were rewarded with a payout of $221.85 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

3/9/19 Golden Gate Fields Late Pick Four - Preview

It's Big 'Cap Day; but, as I'm sure nearly all of you are already aware, racing has been cancelled indefinitely at Santa Anita.  Hopefully the track testing which is currently underway in Arcadia will result in increased safety for horses and riders, and all necessary changes will be implemented prior to reopening.  And if it's determined that one of those necessary changes is a return to a synthetic main track, then so be it; but if that is to be done, then let it be done because all available evidence points to that as a real solution, and not just a dramatic gesture designed to deflect public criticism.

In the meantime the world continues to turn, and horse continue to run around in circles.  So with all that said let's get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Bay's Best Bet.

RACE 7 - (F) Clm $6.25k N2L - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 2 Classic Champ (Morning Line 5-2)

B’s

# 1 She's a Spy (ML 10-1)
# 5 Brilliant Richie (ML 8-5)

C's

# 3 Cutie Leah (ML 8-1)
# 6 Canaveral Bay (ML 20-1)

# 7 Ticketed (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 4 Boisterous Boy (ML 8-1)

I added the N2L designation to the race conditions above, even though it is not included in my copy of the Past Performances.  I don't know if the N2L omission was due to a printing error, or if it was just an amazing coincidence that every entrant in this field has visited the Winner's Circle just once in their respective career; but either way, this event is for non-Winners of Two Races Lifetime.

Classic Champ is getting some much needed class relief.  She's a Spy took a nice step forward in her first try around  two turns last time out.  Brilliant Richie goes first time for the barn of Trainer Jonathan Wong, who tends to do well with such.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 8 - (F) [S] MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 1 Aleda Lutz  (ML 8-5)

B's

# 5 California Canter (ML 8-1)
# 10 Check Out (ML 6-1)

C's

# 2 Sarah's Smirk (ML 20-1)
# 3 Donveras Cat (ML 30-1)
# 4 Tamaraandtheboys (ML 7-2)
# 6 Thunder Woman (ML 20-1)
# 7 Sweet Susan B (ML 12-1)
# 8 Rebalation (ML 9-2)
# 9 Oligarchy (ML 20-1)

Aleda Lutz was within a length of the winner at the wire last time out against open (non-state bred restricted) company.  Check Out and California Canter filled out the bottom two rungs of the Trifecta at this class level last time out.

Tamaraandtheboys is one that you might want to give more prominence to in your play, as she's run well in each of her three career starts, all on different surfaces.  Ultimately I decided against using Tamaraandtheboys on the big ticket as runners for Trainer Bob Hess Sr tend to need a race when returning from an extended layoff, as Tamaraandtheboys is.  So I've placed her, along with the rest of the field, in the backup "C" Selection section.

RACE 9 - Clm $12.5k N2X - Five and a Half Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 7 Knust (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 2 King's Peak (ML 7-2)
# 4 King Eddie (ML 5-2)
# 5 Drinkin and Dialin (ML 9-2)

C's

# 1 Older Brother (ML 20-1)
# 6 Candy Crew (ML 15-1)
# 8 Bob's All In (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 3 Wicked Ultimatum (ML 10-1)

Knust misses by just a neck of entering this contest with a three race winning streak.  Knust is also going first off the claim for Trainer Billy Morey, who tends to do well with such.

King's Peak, coming off a daylight win last time out, re-joins the barn of Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.  King Eddie took the Place at this class level last time out, and could benefit from the shortened distance.  King Eddie is also going first off the claim for Trainer Air Herbertson, who tends to do well with such.

Drinkin and Dialin's claim was voided last time out; otherwise this leg of the big ticket would be an even quartet of runners going first off the claim.  Drinkin and Dialin was less than a length behind Knust at the wire last time out.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 10 - Alw 50000s N2L - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 8 Katie's Cowboy (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 2 Concur (ML 2-1)
# 3 Mr. Gee's Journey (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Builder (ML 8-1)
# 4 Gryffindor (ML 15-1)
# 5 Indian Head Nickle (ML 20-1)
# 6 Royal Charm (ML 12-1)
# 7 Brioso (ML 8-1)

Note for future reference that this contest is for runners which have not won two races in their career; with one exception: one win, and only one win, for $20k or less will not be considered when determining eligibility.  For the record, Mr Gee's Journey and Katie's Cowboy are the only two runners in this field who have visited the Winner's Circle more than once.

Katie's Cowboy is two-for-four lifetime over this main track, and is going first off the claim for Trainer Ari Herbertson, who tends to do well with such.  Concur ships in from downstate for Trainer Phil D'Amato, and could move up with the class drop.  Mr. Gee's Journey took the Show at this class level behind a next out winner last time out.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2 with 1 with 7 with 8 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,5 with 1,5,10 with 2,4,5,7 with 2,3,8 $54.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,6,7 with 1 with 7 with 8 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 2 with 2,3,4,6,7,8,9 with 7 with 8 $3.50
$0.50 P4: 2 with 1 with 1,6,8 with 8 $1.50

3/3/19 Golden Gate Fields Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 5 Respect My Candor (Final Odds 3.10) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - # 4 Bill's Happy Hour (0.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 1 Native Chieftain (3.40) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 3 Lucky Antares (11.80) - "B" Selection

So as it turned out Respect My Candor in the opening leg was indeed one to respect, as Respect My Candor did wake up off the class drop; and just in time, no less, as Respect My Candor had to charge late to get to the wire a half length in front of "B" Selection # 1 Get None (2.40).  So hopefully those of you who read my preview had enough sense to use Respect My Candor more prominently than I did.  As far as my play went, even had I given Respect My Candor a slot on the big ticket it still would have been trashed instead of cashed, as Native Chieftain, victor in the third leg, was another that I had used as a backup "C" Selection only.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Late Pick Four sequence of  5 / 4 / 1 / 3  were rewarded with a payout of $241.85 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

3/3/19 Golden Gate Fields Late Pick Four - Preview

The rains continue in California, which makes for a nice excuse to play the synthetic surface upstate.  So with that let's just get to it, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Bay's Best Bet.

RACE 6 - (F) Clm $12.5k - Five and a Half Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 6 Heavenly Holiday (Morning Line 5-2)

B’s

# 1 Get None (ML 9-5)

C's

# 3 Frisky Fox (ML 5-1)
# 4 Dafne Wildcat (ML 12-1)
# 5 Respect My Candor (ML 4-1)

Scratch # 2 Priest Lake (ML 9-2)

Heavenly Holiday and Get None were victorious in separate contests at this class level last time out.  Respect My Candor is one you might consider as she is running for a tag for the first time; but I have decided to designate her a backup "C" Selection, along with the remainder of the field.  Respect My Candor has yet to defeat winners; and the combination of her last race being such a clunker followed by her being put up for sale at such a cheap price strikes me as somewhat suspicious.  Still, Trainer Bill MacLean could just be bluffing in order to grab an easy purse; so if she looks good to you in the Post Parade you may want to give Respect My Candor more prominence in your play than I will be in mine.

RACE 7 - Md $25k - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 4 Bill's Happy Hour (ML 7-5)

B's

# 7 Qman'sspecialmagic (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Rustic Canyon (ML 6-1)
# 2 Clarence Heads (ML 15-1)
# 3 Glory Call (ML 10-1)
# 5 Hawthorne Lane (ML 20-1)
# 6 Getaloadofthis (ML 5-2)

Bill's Happy Hour drops in for a tag for the first time; and this looks to be a more realistic class level for his abilities.  Qman'sspecialmagic took the Place (albeit a well beaten Place) at this class level last time out.

Glory Call also took the Place at this class level last time out; but last time out for Glory Call was over a year ago, and I suspect that he may need a race.  Getaloadofthis is shipping in from downstate after disappointing three times in his six race career as the Post Time Favorite.  Getaloadofthis could find the competition easier in the Bay Area, but I think that Getaloadofthis needs more distance to show his best.  So I will be slotting Glory Call and Getaloadofthis, along with the rest of the field, in the backup "C" Selection section.

RACE 8 - Clm $4k B - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 7 Press Baron (GB) (ML 5-2)

B's

# 2 Freddies Dream (ML 9-5)
# 5 Make Money for Me (ML 3-1)
# 6 Sojourn (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Native Chieftain (ML 4-1)
# 3 Gurnick (ML 12-1)
# 4 On the Wings Of (ML 30-1)

This contest is restricted to runners which have either:

1) Not won a race since December 1, 2018; OR
2) Which have never won four races.

So as long as a runner has fewer than four career Wins, then he's eligible to run in this race.  If a horse has four career Wins or more, then none of those Wins could have come since the end of November (note that Claiming and Starter Races for $3.5k or less don't count when computing the Win totals).  For the record On the Wings Of, Make Money for Me, and Sojourn are the three runners in this field with fewer than four career Wins.

Press Baron (GB) has finished in the Trifecta in eleven of his last thirteen starts, including five Wins.  Freddies Dream and Sojourn were just a head apart at the wire while filling out the Exacta last time out.  Make Money for Me, three-for-six lifetime over this main track, has that on again / off again pattern going, which, if it continues, suggests that Make Money for Me will run big today.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 9 - (F) ALW N1X - Five and a Half Furlongs Synthetic

A's

# 8 I Love Romance (ML 9-2)

B's

# 1 Maycee Jo (ML 7-2)
# 2 Ziarah (Ire) (ML 8-1)
# 3 Lucky Antares (ML 12-1)
# 7 Bezzy (ML 6-1)
# 9 Coco Bee (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 Kelly (ML 8-1)
# 5 Plum Wild (ML 15-1)
# 6 Well Hello (ML 5-1)
# 10 Silken Queen (ML 20-1)
# 11 My Sweet Lou (ML 15-1)

I Love Romance, Mayce Jo, and Lucky Antares were just a neck apart at the wire while filling out the Trifecta at this class level last time out.  Coco Bee was fourth in that contest; but Coco Bee could return to the form that she showed two starts back when she was victorious at this class level.  And for those of you curious why I Love Romance and Coco Bee are still eligible to compete in an N1X contest after having already won an N1X, it's because they are California bred, and the conditions allow for Cal-bred runners that have won an N1X Allowance Race (but just one) to stay at that level.

Zirah (Ire) could move up with the return to one turn racing.  Bezzy, another Cal-bred who has previously won at this class level, would be my big ticket single in this leg if this event was being held early in the morning, because that's when Bezzy seems to run her best.  The rest of the field comprise the backup "C" Selections.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 4 with 7 with 8 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,6 with 4,7 with 2,5,6,7 with 1,2,3,7,8,9 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,4,5 with 4 with 7 with 8 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 6 with 1,2,3,5,6 with 7 with 8 $2.50
$0.50 P4: 6 with 4 with 1,3,4 with 8 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 6 with 4 with 7 with 4,5,6,10,11 $2.50

Total: $57.00
