1/31/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 4 Lady Wedge (Final Odds 1.80*) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 3 Kafister (2.80) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 10 Storm Comin Thru (3.00) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 12 Gnarly Dude (1.30*) - "B" Selection

He was the name play of the day; but while we had Storm Comin Thru on our tickets, we failed to use him prominently; so when Storm Comin Thru won the third leg of the sequence by the length of the stretch, it became a day for us to contribute rather than collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  4 / 3 / 10 / 12  were rewarded with a payout of $63.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/31/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The rains are coming with a vengeance today; indeed, the announcement has already been made that all turf races have been moved to the main track.  How bad the storms will be remains to be seen; but don't be surprised to see more scratches as the afternoon goes on.  Meanwhile, we will go on with our normal routine, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) Md $30k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Blazeinblairsden (Morning Line 5-2)

B's

# 4 Lady Wedge (ML 2-1)

C's

# 3 Presidential Air (ML 8-1)
# 5 Black Clover (ML 5-1)

# 2 Truly Yours (ML 6-1) has been scratched.

Blazeinblairsden took the Show at this class level last time out.  Lady Wedge should be forwardly placed, and does get some class relief (though not as much as the price tag would suggest, as she is moving from state bred only to open competition).

Presidential Air last all chance last time out when she hesitated at the break; the quick turnaround suggests that she's in fine shape to compete.  Black Clover would rate higher if she was still wearing the hood; but the success Trainer Charles Treece with transferees is enough to give Black Clover a spot on our tickets.

RACE 7 - OC 62k/N2X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Kafister (ML 5-2)
# 5 Papa Turf (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 7 Alpha Bird (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 Eighty Three (ML 3-1)
# 8 Chief Lion (ML 12-1)

EDIT - # 2 Texas Two Step (ML 5-1) was not scratched.  Rather, this is Texas Two Step's first start as a gelding.  My apologies for the error.

Kafister has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of his last three starts.  Papa Turf ran with Kafister most of the way last time out, and could improve going second off the layoff.  Alpha Bird gets some much needed class relief, and should be forwardly placed, even with the turnback in distance.

Eighty Three ships in from the East for Trainer David Jacobson, whose meet has not gotten off to a good beginning.  Still, the Beyer Speed Figures that Eighty Three earned on the Aqueduct inner track fit well with the contenders here, and they do show a steadily improving form.  Chief Lion seems to be rounding into the form that he showed earlier in his career.

RACE 8 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Nine Furlongs Dirt (OFF THE TURF)

A’s

# 1 Husband's Folly (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 2 Sundar Drums (ML 15-1)
# 13 Mahogany Run (ML 12-1)

C's

# 5 Zip the Monkey (ML 9-2)
# 10 Storm Comin Thru (ML 6-1)

# 6 Preacher Roe (No Line) is a program scratch.  In addition, scratch # 7 Sizzlin' Joe (ML 5-1), # 8 Sir Cal (ML 12-1), # 9 Cowboy (ML 15-1), and # 12 Tiz Futurity (ML 30-1).

Husband's Folly has finished in the Trifecta in each of his three career starts on a wet track.  Husband's Folly will be getting some significant class relief as he drops in from open company.  Sundar Drums showed good early speed two and three starts back, and could get a good rail trip.

Mahogany Run goes first off the claim for Trainer Kristin Mulhall, who tends to do well with such.  Even with the outside draw, Mahogany Run should be forwardly placed.  Zip the Monkey showed marked improvement last time out with the stretchout to two turns, though some of that improvement should be credited to the move to turf.  Storm Comin Thru is on the ticket because how do you not use a runner named Storm Comin Thru on a day like today?

RACE 9 - Clm $8k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 El Nino Terrible (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 6 I Buy Gold (ML 7-2)
# 8 Sir Barclay (ML 4-1)
# 11 So Elite (ML 10-1)
# 12 Gnarly Dude (ML 5-2)

C's

None

# 5 Tiz Jolie (NL) and # 9 Collation (NL) are program scratches.  In addition, scratch # 1 Outthink'em (ML 30-1).

El Nino Terrible took the Place against more expensive last time out.  El Nino Terrible was also a winner in his only prior career try on a wet track.  I Buy Gold took the Place against more expensive two starts back.  Sir Barclay took the Show at this class level last time out, and could be the one leading the field around the track.

So Elite has done well in his relatively few starts on dirt, though this will be his first try on an off track.  Gnarly Dude took the Place at this class level last time out, and goes first off the claim for Trainer Steve Miyadi, who tends to do well with such.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 8 with 3,5 with 1 with 3 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,8 with 3,5,7 with 1,2,13 with 3,6,8,11,12 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,5 with 3,5 with 1 with 3 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 4,8 with 1 with 3 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 3,5 with 5,10 with 3 $2.00

Total: $52.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:04 EST / 3:04 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/30/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - The Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint - # 7 Velvet Mesquite (Final Odds 2.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 1 W. Giles (3.00) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - The California Cup Turf Classic - # 7 What a View (4.10) - No Selection
Race 10 - # 6 Shy Carmelita (12.10) - No Selection

We used five runners in the opening leg just to find the Post Time Favorite; even worse, we used half the field in the third leg and managed to miss the winner entirely.  Still, we did get our big ticket non-Favorite single home in the second leg; and being knocked out in the third leg did spare us the heartache of losing in the finale when Shy Carmelita passed # 7 Desperate Chick (2.30) in the shadow of the wire.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  7 / 1 / 7 / 6  were rewarded with a payout of $610.85 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/30/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

The spotlight shines on state breds today, as it's California Cup Day at Santa Anita.  Two of the stakes have made their way into the latter portion of the card; we'll be looking at them below as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 7 - [S] (F) The Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint $150k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 3 Smoove It (Morning Line 6-1)
# 7 Velvet Mesquite (ML 7-2)

B's

# 4 Chati's On Top (ML 5-1)
# 8 Singing Kitty (ML 5-1)
# 11 Qiaona (ML 8-1)

C's

None

# 1 Yana (ML 30-1), # 2 My Fiona (ML 20-1), and # 6 Sheer Pleasure (ML 8-1) have been scratched.  Bring in # 13 Nite Delite (ML 12-1) and # 14 Princess Bertrando (ML 30-1) off the Also Eligible List.

Smoove It misses by just a neck of being victorious each of the last three times that she charged down the hill.  Velvet Mesquite should appreciate the class relief.  Chati's On Top won the last time that she competed in a stakes restricted to state bred only.

Singing Kitty was a stakes winner three starts back against open company.  Qiaona has been successful of late against open company.

RACE 8 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 W. Giles (ML 4-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 8 Alpine Luck (ML 8-1)
# 9 Pray Hard (ML 7-2)

# 6 One More Roll (ML 6-1) has been scratched.

W. Giles wired the field at this class level last time out, and looks likely to do it again.  Alpine Luck tries to make it two in a row, but may not be quick enough to keep up with W. Giles early.  Pray Hard won at this class level two starts back, but for different connections.

RACE 9 - [S] The California Cup Turf Classic $250k - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 5 Alert Bay (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 1 Tamarando (ML 20-1)
# 2 G. G. Ryder (ML 4-1)
# 3 Unusually Green (ML 20-1)
# 9 Somethings Unusual (ML 12-1)
# 10 Poshsky (ML 9-2)

C's

None

# 13 Cowboy (ML 50-1) does not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

Alert Bay won this contest last year, and is the clear class of this field.  Tamarando closed well against Graded Stakes company on the synthetic surface upstate last time out, and could improve with the freshening.  G. G. Ryder was just a nose behind Alert Bay at the wire two starts back, G. G. Ryder's most recent turf start.

Unusually Green was a winner the last time that he competed against state bred company, and could be the one running best late.  Somethings Unusual defeated open company each of the last two times that he raced on the grass.  Poshky won the Grade 3 Berkeley on the synthetics upstate two starts back, and defeated open company on the turf three starts back.

RACE 10 - [S] (F) MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Desperate Chick (ML 5-2)
# 8 Who Said Lucky (ML 7-2)

B's

# 4 Dancing Sunset (ML 12-1)
# 10 Ready to Hula Lula (ML 4-1)

C's

# 2 Malibu Rum Run (ML 12-1)

Desperate Chick showed good early speed while taking the Place in her debut last time out.  Who Said Lucky has taken the Place at this class level in each of her last two starts.

Dancing Sunset missed graduating at this class level by just a neck two starts back.  Ready to Hula Lula is a first time starter who has been working well over this main track.  Malibu Rum Run didn't show much in her debut back in July; but she's had a nice freshening, and Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer does quite well with maidens making their second career start.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,7 with 1 with 5 with 7,8 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,7,8,11 with 1 with 1,2,3,5,9,10 with 4,7,8,10 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,7 with 8,9 with 5 with 7,8 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 3,7 with 1 with 5 with 2 $1.00

Total: $69.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/24/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 5 Bistraya (Final Odds 5.20) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - The Clocker's Corner - # 7 Coastline (5.10) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 7 Star of Munster (1.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 10 Intoxicating Move (2.80*) - "A" Selection

In the preview I noted that the last time they competed against each other, Bistraya crossed the wire three lengths in front of # 4 Hoffenheim (0.60*).  I felt that since today's contest was a route (whereas the prior one had been a sprint) the extra distance would allow Hoffenheim to make up the difference.  In retrospect, I should have at the very least seen these two runners as equals, and made them both "A" Selections.  Had I done so, we would have collected three times today instead of just once.

But that's just an observation; not a complaint.  For the second day in a row we find ourselves holding three Aces; except today, unlike yesterday, we cash rather than trash.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 1 L. A. Magic (9.60) - $928.40 Finish: 8th
# 7 Miss Gifted (3.30) - $198.45 Finish: 4th
# 9 Odisseia (Ire) (5.40) - $365.80 Finish: 3rd

But that's what might have been.  The actual winning Pick Four sequence of  5 / 7 / 7 / 10  paid $209.85 for a fifty cent wager.  That makes for a profit of $157.35 on our $52.50 investment, or approximate odds of 3-1.

I hope you all had it with me.  May God bless us as we spend our winnings.

Onto the next race!

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/24/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

First, let me again express my best wishes for all those affected by this snow storm in the United States.  Hopefully all of you are well and have all that you need to get by until the roads are clear.  Please be sure to check on your neighbors, especially the elderly or those with young children, and offer assistance if you can.

Downhill turf racing is the key component of the back portion of today's card at Santa Anita, as half of the final four races on the program will be charges down the hill.  We'll be analyzing them below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - MSW - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Hoffenheim (Morning Line 9-5)

B's

# 2 Eric the Trojan (ML 6-1)
# 5 Bistra (ML 3-1)

C's

None

Hoffenheim has finished in the money at this class level in each of his three career starts.  Hoffenheim gained the lead in the stretch last time out only to lose by a neck; perhaps the half furlong reduction in distance will help him this go round.

Eric the Trojan could be the speed of the speed here, and his breeding suggests that two turns should be in his wheelhouse.  Bistra took the Place last time out, hitting the wire over three lengths in front of Hoffenheim; but that was in a sprint, and this will be Bistra's first time routing.

RACE 7 - [R] The Clocker's Corner $75k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 1 Rocket Heat (ML 7-2)
# 7 Coastline (ML 4-1)

B's

# 4 County Lineman (ML 8-1)
# 8 Home Run Kitten (ML 4-1)

C's

# 9 Ocho Ocho Ocho (ML 8-1)

The restriction on this stakes is that it is open only to those runners which have not run a Graded Stakes since July 1, 2015.

Last time out, Rocket Heat and Coastline filled out the final two slots of the Trifecta in the Grade 3 Daytona, crossing the wire less than a length behind the winner.  Look for Rocket Heat early and Coastline late.

County Lineman has been in the Trifecta four of the five times that he has charged down the hill in his career.  Home Run Kitten and Ocho Ocho Ocho are a pair of Graded Stakes winners getting some much needed class relief.

RACE 8 - (F) OC 40k/Alw 40000s - Six Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Star of Munster (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 6 Dixie Space (ML 7-2)

C's

# 3 Red Stich (ML 4-1)
# 4 Yodelsong (ML 6-1)

Since I've gotten these conditions both right and wrong in the past, it seems only fair that I list them again (the correct version, hopefully):

If you're willing to put your three year old filly up for sale for $40k, you can enter her here.  That's why Yodelsong can be a part of this field despite having never run for a tag before in her career.

If you don't want to say goodbye to your horse to someone willing to give you $40k, then your runner must:

1) Have started for a claiming price of $40k or less (make it $50k or less if the horse is California bred or sired);

AND

2) Have never won two races

Besides Yodelsong, the other fillies in this field running with a price tag on their head are # 2 Octofy (ML 8-1) (two career Wins) and Star of Munster (three career Wins).

Star of Munster has won two of the three career races that she has run under these conditions; and the one that she lost was by just a nose.  Dixie Spaces won her debut by three lengths last time out, and could get a nice stalking trip behind Star of Munster.

Red Stich has finished in the money at this class level in each of her last three races.  As mentioned above, Yodelsong runs for a tag for the first time in her career; perhaps the class drop will help her return to the form that she showed in her debut, the only prior time that she has competed at today's distance.

RACE 9 - Clm $25k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 10 Intoxicating Move (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 1 L. A. Magic (ML 20-1)
# 7 Miss Gifted (ML 3-1)
# 9 Odisseia (Ire) (ML 4-1)

C's

None

Nobody draws in off the Also Eligible List; so take out # 11 Dutchessa (GB) 15-1); # 12 Altaira (ML 12-1); # 13 Ride the World (ML 6-1); and # 14 Summer Lady (ML 30-1).

Intoxicating Move was within two lengths of the winner at the wire charging down the hill against more expensive stock last time out.  L. A. Magic, on the early lead in that same contest, ran out of gas late; expect L. A. Magic to have more stamina going second off the layoff.

Miss Gifted graduated in her debut charging down the hill, and gets some much needed class relief.  Odisseia (Ire) has shown good early speed against more expensive while routing on the flat turf course; such horses tend to do well when moving to the downhill course.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4 with 1,7 with 7 with 10 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,4,5 with 1,4,7,8 with 6,7 with 1,7,9,10 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4 with 9 with 7 with 10 $0.50
$0.50 P4: 4 with 1,7 with 3,4 with 10 $2.00

Total: $52.50

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/23/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 9 It Is Living Water (Final Odds 1.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 1 Avanti Bello (5.90) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The Santa Monica - # 4 Lost Bus (64.60) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 12 True Brilliance (2.40*) - "A" Selection

We used four of the nine runners in the Santa Monica, and yet somehow managed to not have any part of, not just the winner, but any of the top three finishers.  So, despite getting "A" Selections home in the other three legs, today was our day to contribute rather than collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  9 / 1 / 4 / 12  were rewarded with a payout of $3,532.85 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/23/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

If you're somewhere in the eastern portion of the United States that's being hit by the current snow storm, I hope that you're warm and safe and in possession of all the provisions you need.  The featured race on today's card at Santa Anita is the Grade 2 Santa Monica; we'll be taking a look at it below as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 9 It Is Living Water (Morning Line 5-2)

B’s

# 11 Johns Journey (ML 12-1)

C's

# 2 Wade (ML 5-1)
# 6 Odin (ML 8-1)

# 13 Eleven Zip (ML 12-1) and # 14 Luckbox Sam (ML 12-1) do not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

It Is Living Water goes first off the claim for Trainer Peter Miller, who does exceptionally well in that category.  It Is Living Water has finished in the Trifecta each of the last five times that he has competed against state-bred only company.

Johns Journey returns from a three month freshening and could steal this one on the front end.  Wade tries winners and grass for the first time.  Wade's dirt form is sharp, and Trainer Peter Eurton does very well placing his last out winners; but the surface switch is a concern.  Odin's lone career win came charging down the hill; but Odin did not look sharp in his last three outings, and may need a race off the layoff.

RACE 7 - OC 40k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Avanti Bello (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 5 Logan's Moon (ML 8-1)
# 8 Wolf Rocket Man (ML 5-2)

C's

# 6 Doyouknowsomething (ML 12-1)
# 7 J Serino (ML 8-1)

# 11 Oligarch (No Line) is a program scratch.

Avanti Bello took the Show at this class level last time out, and could improve with the cutback in distance.  Logan's Moon and Wolf Rocket Man both disappointed last time out in the same contest when neither did very much running.  Perhaps they both just needed a race to get back to their prior form.

Doyouknowsomething has been showing steady improvement, and fired that nice bullet work back on the 9th; but he may be just a half-step below the top contenders here.  J Serino fits at this class level, though he seems to settle for too many minor awards.

RACE 8 - (F) The Santa Monica (Grade 2) - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Room for Me (ML 3-1)
# 7 Living The Life (Ire) (ML 6-1)

B's

# 2 Ben's Duchess (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Prize Exhibit (GB) (ML 4-1)

Room for Me is a lifetime three-for-four over this main track and looks to be in peak condition.  Living the Life (Ire) is a Graded Stakes winner on the synthetic; and since Living The Life has been working well over this main track, she may carry that form with her.

Ben's Duchess won the Grade 3 LA Woman two starts back over this main track.  Prize Exhibit (GB) is on the wrong surface; but Prize Exhibit is a multiple Graded Stakes winner on the grass, and these aren't exactly world beaters.

RACE 9 - [S] MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Lymebyrd (ML 4-1)
# 12 True Brilliance (ML 3-1)

B's

# 1 Etailer (ML 6-1)
# 4 Woodie B Awesome (ML 20-1)
# 9 Reliable Source (ML 4-1)

C's

# 7 Sudden Sam (ML 6-1)
# 10 Tribal Fighter (ML 8-1)

# 11 Awesome Journey (NL) is a program scratch.

Lymebyrd, True Brilliance, Etailer, and Reliable Source have all finished in the money at this class level in all seven of their combined career starts.  Woodie B Awesome showed good early speed in his debut last time out, and Trainer Gary Sherlock has had some success with runners making their second career start.  Sudden Sam and Tribal Fighter are a pair of first time starters sired by Tribal Rule, whose progeny tend to do well in their debuts.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 9 with 1 with 6,7 with 8,12 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 9,11 with 1,5,8 with 2,6,7 with 1,4,8,9,12 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,6 with 1 with 6,7 with 8,12 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 9 with 6,7 with 6,7 with 8,12 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 9 with 1 with 1 with 8,12 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 9 with 1 with 6,7 with 7,10 $2.00

Total: $60.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/18/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 5 Mr. Coker (Final Odds 0.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 3 Cougar Country (10.40) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - The Megahertz - # 7 Keri Belle (12.90) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 12 Red Hot Info (19.00) - No Selection

We had the winner of the opening leg of the sequence; but, then again, so it everyone else.  We were just a nose away from being alive heading into the final leg, as that was the margin of defeat for "A" Selection # 9 Stormy Lucy (3.40) in The Megahertz.  But we were totally embarrassed in the finale, as we failed to have either half of the Exacta, despite using 75% of the field.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  5 / 3 / 7 / 12  were rewarded with a payout of $3,259.70 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/18/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." - Martin Luther King Jr.

We've made it to the final day of our three day holiday weekend; and as was true for each of the two prior days, the Feature Race at Santa Anita is a distaff offering; in this case the Grade 3 Megahertz.  We'll be looking at that contest below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Mr. Coker (Morning Line 8-5)

B's

None

C's

# 2 Twirling (ML 3-1)
# 6 Horse Greedy (ML 12-1)
# 8 Mischievous Bull (ML 6-1)

Mr. Coker took the Place in his debut last time out at this class level for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.  Mr. Coker was over ten lengths clear of the Show horse at the wire in that contest.

Twirling is a first time starter for Trainer Bob Baffert; Rafael Bejarano gets the mount.  Horse Greedy adds the blinkers for his second start; Trainer Brian Koriner does well when making this move.  Mischievous Bull, trained by Doug O'Neill, was sired by Into Mischief, whose progeny tend to do well at first asking.

RACE 7 - Clm $16k N3L - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 12 Eagle Rock (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 5 Bandido Too (ML 5-1)
# 6 Inspired Wisdom (ML 10-1)

C's

# 1 Monsieur Power (Ire) (ML 6-1)
# 3 Cougar Country (ML 9-2)

Last time out Eagle Rock, at today's class level, won the speed duel but lost the race.  The half length shaved off today's distance should help, as should the rider change to Rafael Bejarano.

Bandido Too gets some much needed class relief.  Inspired Wisdom moves up the class ladder after defeating N2L company last time out.  Inspired Wisdom's trainer, Marty Jones, tends to do well when placing his last out winners.

Monsieur Power (Ire), trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, fits at this class level, based upon his efforts upstate.  The question with Monsieur Power is how well will he handle real dirt.  Cougar Country made a nice move forward last time out while competing against less expensive stock.  The question with Cougar Country is can he build on that effort with the change in barn.

RACE 8 - (F) The Megahertz (Grade 3) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Glory (ML 7-2)
# 8 Gender Agenda (GB) (ML 6-1)
# 9 Stormy Lucy (ML 4-1)

B's

# 6 Tiz a Kiss (ML 20-1)

C's

None

# 5 Sweet as a Rose (No Line) and # 13 Oscar Party (NL) have been scratched.

Gender Agenda (GB), Stormy Lucy, and Glory all exit the Grade 3 Bobby Frankel, where they were all within a neck of each other at the wire .  It would not surprise me to see the same finish in this contest today.  Tiz a Kiss could be the one running best late in a turf field that seems to have a disproportionate amount of early speed.

RACE 9 - [S] Md $50k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Star Express (ML 4-1)

B's

# 1 Discreetlyhumorme (ML 7-2)
# 3 Remember Clement (ML 8-1)
# 7 Gambler's Wish (ML 30-1)
# 9 Tribe of Gamblers (ML 6-1)
# 11 Calvert Street (ML 15-1)

C's

# 2 Da Brooklyn Kid (ML 10-1)
# 5 Bobby Z (ML 6-1)

Star Express has already had ten attempts at graduating; but his recent efforts have been showing steady improvement, and today will be his first time competing with Rafael Bejarano on his back.

Discreetlyhumorme broke well in his debut last time out, before he lost his rider.  Remembering Clement just missed graduation by a neck at this class level last time out.  Gambler's Wish should be more relaxed with the blinkers coming off.  Even without the hood, Gambler's Wish could be quickest out of the gate.

Tribe of Gamblers runs for a pricier tag, but moves from open to state-restricted company; at worst a lateral move.  Tribe of Gambles should improve with the return to a one turn contest.

Calvert Street has carried his speed further with each effort; perhaps today he'll carry it all the way to the Winner's Circle.  Da Brooklyn Kid and Bobby Z both broke well in their respective debuts last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 5 with 12 with 2,8,9 with 8 $3.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 5 with 5,6,12 with 2,6,8,9 with 1,3,7,8,9,11 $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,6,8 with 12 with 2,8,9 with 8 $4.50
$0.50 P4: 5 with 1,3 with 2,8,9 with 8 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 5 with 12 with 2,8,9 with 2,5 $3.00

Total: $49.50

1/17/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 6 Black Tie (Final Odds 2.60) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - The Astra - # 3 Havanna Belle (Ire) (10.10) - No Selection
Race 8 - # 7 Nine Point Nine (2.60) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 2 Nodiac (Ire) (1.10*) - "A" Selection

We started well and ended well; but we failed to connect on the middle portion of the sequence.  Havanna Belle (Ire) had finished eighth her last time out behind two of the runners in today's field; perhaps the added distance was all that she needed.  Nine Point Nine had finished over eight lengths behind # 9 Pico Chick (1.80*) in their last contest prior to today; perhaps the shortened distance was all that she needed.  As for us, all that we needed was to have those two winners on our tickets; but we did not, so for that reason today was our day to contribute rather than collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  6 / 3 / 7 / 2  were rewarded with a payout of $248.15 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/17/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

We're right smack in the middle of a three day weekend here in the USA, and the good people at Santa Anita have given us the three turn on the turf Astra Stakes as our featured race.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - Clm $25k N2L - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 L's Choice (Morning Line 5-2)

B’s

# 6 Black Tie (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 Exemplar (ML 5-1)

L's Choice drops in class after taking the Show in an N2L Starter Allowance.  Black Tie should improve with the stretchout, and can be expected to be forwardly placed.  Exemplar is another that could improve going to two turns from one, as Exemplar earned his career best Beyer Speed Figure in his only career route.

RACE 7 - (F) The Astra $75k - Twelve Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Gaga A (Uru) (ML 5-2)

B's

# 1 Fresh Feline (ML 4-1)
# 5 Generosidade (Uru) (ML 6-1)

C's

# 8 Nancy From Nairobi (GB) (ML 4-1)

Gaga A (Uru) was a Graded Stakes winner in his final start in France.  In her North America debut two starts back Gaga A won a listed stakes over this turf course at today's distance off a layoff similar to the one that she's coming off today.  Fresh Feline closed well in each of her last two starts, and could improve with the added distance.  Generosidade (Uru) get some much needed class relief.

Nancy From Nairobi (GB) showed much improvement overseas when she added the blinkers, so it's unclear why they have been removed for her North American outings.  However, even without the hood, Nancy From Nairobi should be forwardly placed in what could be a pretty paceless affair.

RACE 8 - (F) Clm $25k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 One Bye Two (ML 6-1)
# 9 Pico Chick (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 3 Sooner Time (ML 6-1)
# 8 Heed to Speed (ML 8-1)

C's

# 6 Mazboot (ML 6-1)

# 10 Tribal Headdress (ML 7-2) has been scratched.

One Bye Two defeated more expensive at Los Alamitos last time out.  Pico Chick took the Show against classier competition last time out, and could improve with the cutback to just one turn.

Sooner Time took the Place behind One Bye Two last time out.  Heed to Speed graduated over this main track last time out; Trainer Peter Miller tends to do well placing his last out winners.  Mazboot was a winner in her only prior race on a fast dirt track.

RACE 9 - (F) MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 2 Nodiac (Ire) (ML 5-2)
# 7 Lady Valeur (Ire) (ML 3-1)
# 9 Albeit (ML 8-1)

B's

None

C's

# 3 Lethal Legacy (ML 12-1)
# 6 How Unusual (ML 8-1)

Nobody draws in off the Also Eligible List; so scratch # 11 Miss Injustice (ML 15-1); # 12 Coronado Cool (ML 8-1); # 13 Newcomb (ML 3-1); and # 14 Macalla (No Line).

Nodiac (Ire) took the Place at this class level routing on the Del Mar grass last time out.  Lady Valeur (Ire) took the Place in her debut in her native Ireland last time out.   Albeit ran the best race of her six race career the only prior time that she competed on grass.

Lethal Legacy and How Unusual are a pair of first time starters trained by Barry Abrams and sired by Unusual Heat; so both have the proper breeding for the grass, and both look to have been working well in preparation for this event.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 8 with 2 with 2,9 with 2,7,9 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 6,8 with 1,2,5 with 2,3,8,9 with 2,7,9 $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4 with 2 with 2,9 with 2,7,9 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 8 with 2,9 with 2,7,9 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 2 with 6 with 2,7,9 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 8 with 2 with 2,9 with 3,6 $2.00

Total: $51.50

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/16/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 5 Analog Girl (Final Odds 16.40) - "C" Selection
Race 7 - The La Canada - # 7 Taris (1.00*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 1 Dreamologist (2.40*) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 11 Two Steps of Glory (2.80) - "B" Selection

We failed to appreciate just how great an early speed advantage Analog Girl had over her rivals in the opening leg today, as she was never challenged at any point in the race by any of the other entrants.  Analog Girl breezed home to an easy victory, looking much more like an odds-on favorite than a 16-1 longshot.  And while we did use Analog Girl in our play we did not have her on our big ticket, and for that reason today was our day to contribute rather than collect.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  5 / 7 / 1 / 11  were rewarded with a payout of $326.50 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/16/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Once again fillies and mares dominate the latter portion of the card at Santa Anita, including the day's featured race, the Grade 2 La Canada.  So with that as our backdrop let's get to it as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) Clm $40k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Belle Et Bete (Ire) Morning Line 6-1)
# 8 Doodetta (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 6 Vanlose Stairway (ML 5-1)
# 7 Bottle Blonde (GB) (ML 7-2)
# 9 Augustina de Aragon (ML 4-1)

C's

# 5 Analog Girl (ML 15-1)
# 10 Summer Lady (ML 20-1)
# 11 Native Heart (ML 20-1)

Belle Et Bete (Ire), trained by Phil D'Amato, defeated more expensive stock two starts back.  Doodetta drops in for a tag for the first time in her career.  Both Belle Et Bete and Doodetta seem to be advantaged by the probable pace shape of this race, as it looks as if it all could collapse late.

Vanlose Stairway defeated N1X Optional Claimers two starts back.  Bottle Blonde took the Show against more expensive last time out.  Augustina de Aragon won at this class level two starts back.

Analog Girl could be the speed of the speed here.  While that's not as important on grass as it is on dirt, it could be a factor if no one challenges her early.  I expect several runners to be up on the lead during the opening stages of this contest; but if Analog Girl breaks loose without burning herself out, she could get her picture taken today.

Summer Lady is trying grass for the first time.  The breeding is there and her trainer, Steve Miyadi, does quite well with first time turfers.  Native Heart gets some much needed class relief here.

RACE 7 - (F) The La Canada (Grade 2) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Yahilwa (ML 5-2)
# 7 Taris (ML 2-1)

B's

None

C's

# 2 Illuminant (ML 8-1)
# 3 Oscar Party (ML 20-1)
# 6 Birdatthewire (ML 3-1)

# 1 Tara's Tango (ML 4-1) and # 4 Honey Ride (ML 12-1) have been scratched.

Yahilwa and Taris are the two best horses in this contest, and they can be expected to go at each other as soon as the gates open.  Yahilwa has the home field advantage, and Taris' best efforts have been around just one turn.  For those reasons, if I had to pick one over the other I would go with Yahilwa; but, fortunately, I don't have to pick one over the other.

Illuminant was sired by Quality Road, who won multiple Graded Stakes on the dirt; so if Illuminant's turf form should carry over, she could upset here.  Birdatthewire has been showing steady improvement and could get there late if the two favorites battle each other into the ground.  Oscar Party is on the ticket because history has shown that using all but one of the runners in any given leg of a multi-race wager is not conducive to getting a good night's sleep.

RACE 8 - (F) OC 40k/C - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 7 Perdona (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 1 Dreamologist (ML 3-1)
# 2 Hard Night's Day (ML 7-2)

C's

# 5 Entrechat (ML 7-2)
# 10 Sea Mona (ML 15-1)
# 11 Demonica (ML 8-1)

Rather than list all the conditions, I'll just note that all twelve entrants in this contest have one career Win apiece except for the California bred Demonica, who has two.   Also note that none of the twelve  entrants will be running with the $40k price tag on their head.

Perdona took the Show at this approximate class level last time out.  Perdona has shown good early speed in the past when routing on the flat turf, a trait which is often shown by runners who perform well when they first try charging down the hill.

Dreamologist took the Show at this class level last time out, and, like Perdona, has shown good early speed when routing on the flats.  Hard Night's Day graduated last time out charging down the hill.

Entrechat returns from an extended vacation after having disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of her prior three races.  Sea Mona seems to settle for too many minor awards; but she certainly fits at this class level.  Demonica was showing a steadily improving form before she went on the shelf; perhaps Demonica can pick up where she left off.

RACE 9 - (F) Md $30k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Sharpest One (ML 6-1)

B's

# 10 Old Hollywood (ML 7-2)
# 11 Two Steps of Glory (ML 3-1)

C's

# 2 Evening Again (ML 12-1)
# 8 B K Miss (ML 30-1)
# 12 Death Valley Girl (ML 15-1)

# 9 Avaudrey (ML 6-1) has been scratched.

Sharpest One drops in for a tag for the first time in her career.  Old Hollywood took the Place at this class level last time out.  Two Steps of Glory has disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of her last three starts; taking the Place at this class level each time.  But note that Two Steps of Glory's margin of defeat in those three contests decreased with each try.

Evening Again showed good early speed in her debut last time out.  B K Miss showed an ability to rate in her debut two starts back; perhaps she can do that again today.  Death Valley Girl gave a quality effort in her debut, and the sharp workout that she turned in her last time on the track suggests that she could return to that form.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 2,8 with 5,7 with 7 with 4 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,6,7,8,9 with 5,7 with 1,2,7 with 4,10,11 $45.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 5,10,11 with 5,7 with 7 with 4 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 2,8 with 2,3,6 with 7 with 4 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 2,8 with 5,7 with 5,10,11 with 4 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 2,8 with 5,7 with 7 with 2,8,12 $6.00

Total: $67.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/10/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 6 Cadet Roni (Final Odds 1.40*) - "B" Selection
Race 7 - # 2 Ain't Misbehavin (2.10*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 9 Lily Pod (2.00) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 9 Moonie (3.20*) - "A" Selection

We used six of the eight starters in the opening leg on our tickets, only to find the Post Time Favorite.  Even worse, we didn't have the winner as an "A" Selection; for had we done so we would have collected three times instead of just once, as our "A" Selections won the subsequent three legs.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 6 Briartic Gal (14.10) - $364.25 Finish: 3rd
# 7 Ballerina Headline (4.10) - $83.95 Finish: 8th
# 8 Major Rager (6.50) - $181.80 Finish: 6th
# 10 Chalk Of The Town (6.20) - $167.70 Finish: 7th

But that's what might have been.  The actual winning Pick Four sequence of  6 / 2 / 9 / 9  paid $72.15 for a fifty cent wager (almost exactly half what yesterday's Late Pick Four paid).  That makes for a profit of $10.15 on our $62 investment; which ain't much.  I mean, we're talking approximate odds of 0.16-1; that really ain't much.  It's certainly much less than we would have gotten just by putting the sixty-two bucks on our single in the second leg, Ain't Misbehavin.  But it is profit; and if there's one thing you can be sure of, I will never turn my nose up at profit at the track.

I hope you all had it with me.  May God bless us as we spend our winnings.

Onto the next race!

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/10/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Fillies and mares dominate the latter portion of today's card at Santa Anita, including today's feature, which drew enough entrants that it'll be run in two divisions.  So with that, let's jump right in as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Bad Ju Ju (Morning Line 9-2)

B’s

# 1 So Sweetitiz (ML 4-1)
# 3 Yana (ML 7-2)
# 6 Cadet Roni (ML 3-1)
# 8 Girl Downstairs (ML 12-1)

C's

# 5 Nite Delite (ML 6-1)

This is the earlier division of today's feature, having the identical conditions as Race 8 below.

Bad Ju Ju took the Show at this approximate class level last time out.  Bad Ju Ju puts the hood back on, which may give her a jump on the rest of the speed signed up for this one.

So Sweetitiz tries winners for the first time; she also has to be careful not to get trapped on the rail, as she seems to do better when she presses rather than leads.  However, if So Sweetitiz can run her race, she can contend here.

Yana took the Place two starts back, the last time that she competed at this class level.  Yana's workouts show that she should be in fine form for this contest.  Cadet Roni took the Show at this class level last time out, and could improve with the turn back in distance.  Girl Downstairs, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Martin Garcia, may have just needed that last race.  Besides, who can pass up 12-1 on Baffert / Garcia?

Nite Delite has shown nice improvement her last two races after moving to the turf and adding the blinkers.  If her recent success is dependent on the grass, then she won't fare well in this contest on the main track; but if it's the blinkers that caused her recent wake-up, then Nite Delite could do well today.

RACE 7 - Clm $16k N3L - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Ain't Misbehavin (ML 5-2)

B’s

None

C's

# 4 Celebrity Status (ML 7-2)
# 5 Aventador (Fr) (ML 8-1)
# 6 Benba (ML 5-1)

Ain't Misbehavin took the Place last time out against $25k unconditioned claimers.  Two starts back Ain't Misbehavin won running at this price level, but again against unconditioned.  This is quite a drop down the class ladder for Ain't Misbehavin, and if he can repeat the effort that he gave in either of those two contests, then he should get his picture taken today.

Celebrity Status and Benba should provide for an honest pace in the early going.  The problem with Celebrity Status and Benba is that they both seem to settle for too many minor awards.

Aventador (Fr), a stakes winner and Graded Stakes placed in his native France, returns to action off a layoff of over sixteen months.  If Aventador can run to his prior form, then he's an easy winner here; but if his connections thought that Aventador could run back to his prior form, they wouldn't be offering him for sale for $16k.  Still, Aventador's back class must be respected, so we can't totally ignore his presence.

RACE 8 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 My Fiona (ML 6-1)
# 9 Lily Pod (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 2 Conquest Flatterme (ML 6-1)
# 5 Gracie Ragazza (ML 8-1)

C's

None

This is the later division of today's feature, having the identical conditions as Race 6 above.

My Fiona took the show at this class level last time out, albeit back in June.  Still, My Fiona does show a steady work pattern of late, and should be ready heading into this contest.

Lily Pod graduated over this main track, and could be the quickest in this field.  Conquest Flatterme won her debut last time out, albeit on the fake stuff; but she has been working well over this main track.  Gracie Ragazza has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of her last two starts; and while those two starts were around two turns, Gracie Ragazza has won at today's distance in the past.

RACE 9 - [S] (F) MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Major Rager (ML 6-1)
# 9 Moonie (ML 7-2)

B's

# 6 Briartic Gal (ML 6-1)
# 7 Ballerina Headline (ML 9-2)
# 10 Chalk of the Town (ML 8-1)

C's

None

# 1 Don't tell Judy (ML 15-1) has been scratched.

Major Rager has finished in the Trifecta in all three of her career starts, all against non-claiming maidens (state-bread and open).  Moonie has taken the Place in six of her ten career starts, including her last two.  Perhaps today will be the day that she decides to lead the pack.

The only thing we learned from Briartic's debut back in April was that she didn't like running on some California grass.  Briartic's gate work on 1/3 suggests that she should do much better on the dirt.

Speaking of doing better on the dirt, Ballerina Headline and Chalk of the Town both ship in from upstate after doing quite well in their respective last time out on the synthetic.  If either one can transfer their game onto real dirt then they can win here.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 7 with 2 with 6,9 with 8,9 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,3,6,7,8 with 2 with 2,5,6,9 with 6,7,8,9,10 $50.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 5 with 2 with 6,9 with 8,9 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 7 with 4,5,6 with 6,9 with 8,9 $6.00

Total: $62.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/9/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - The Sham - # 9 Collected (Final Odds 1.50*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 6 Follow Me Crev (3.80*) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The San Pasqual - # 4 California Chrome (0.60*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 6 Justonemorething (5.00) - "B" Selection

California Chrome may not have been at his best, but he ran well enough to win by daylight.  Likewise for Collected; indeed, we could have saved a significant amount of money on our play by just singling these two runners.  But that's twenty-twenty hindsight talking, as the job of handicapping tends to be much easier once the race has been run.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 4 Love De Car (4.30*) - $116.20 Finish: 10th
# 13 Razorbill (9.60) - $227.30 Finish: 7th
# 14 Gnarly Dude (5.20) - $210.40 Finish: 2nd

But that's what might have been.  The actual winning Pick Four sequence of  9 / 6 / 4 / 6  paid $146.30 for a fifty cent wager.  That makes for a profit of $90.80 on our $55.50 investment, or approximate odds of 1.64-1.

I hope you all had it with me.  May God bless us as we spend our winnings.

Onto the next race!

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/9/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Big doings at Santa Anita today, as the card features a pair of Graded Stakes: The Sham and The San Pasqual.  We'll be taking a look at both as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - The Sham (Grade 3) - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 I'malreadythere (Morning Line 5-1)
# 9 Collected (ML 3-1)

B's

# 4 Found Money (ML 6-1)
# 6 Laoban (ML 15-1)

C's

# 3 Let's Meet in Rio (ML 6-1)

# 2 Dressed in Hermes (ML 7-2) has been scratched.

I'malreadythere, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and ridden by Rafael Bejarano, has twice hit the board in Graded Stakes.  Collected, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Martin Garcia, shows enough dirt in his pedigree that his form should carry over onto the main track.

Found Money, trained by Doug O'Neill, is two-for-two over this main track.  It looked like Jockey Mario Gutierrez was able to get Found Money to rate last time out on his way to winning The King Glorious.  If Gutierrez can get Found Money to sit just off the lead again today, then he should be in the mix at the wire.

Laoban and Let's Meet in Rio exit the same maiden contest.  Let's Meet in Rio was the one that graduated, but Laoban was the one that did all the heavy lifting.  Laoban could also be the one leading the pack early in today's event.

RACE 7 - OC 62k/N2X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Motown Men (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 3 Ground Rules (ML 7-2)
# 4 Highway Boss (ML 12-1)
# 6 Follow Me Crev (ML 8-1)
# 8 Verraco (ML 15-1)
# 9 Just Kidding (ML 12-1)

C's

# 1 Melatonin (No Line), # 12 Fooled Again (NL), and # 13 Slim Shady (GB) (NL) are all program scratches.

Motown Men drops in class after taking the Show in two of his last three races against stakes competition.  The last time Motown Men ran at this class level he won for fun.  The bullet work Motown Men turned in over this main track on 12/26 suggests that he's ready to roll off the layoff.

Ground Rules missed the Winner's Circle by just a neck the last time that he competed at this class level.  Highway Boss is three-for-five in his career over this main track, and was less than a length away from the winner at the wire at this approximate class level last time out.

Follow Me Crev moves up the class ladder, but the Beyer Speed Figure that he earned while winning last time out is the best last out Beyer in this field.  Verraco is a lifetime three-for-three over this main track.  Just Kidding has been in the Trifecta in each of his last two starts, both at this approximate class level.

RACE 8 - The San Pasqual (Grade 2) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 California Chrome (ML 4-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Alfa Bird (ML 20-1)
# 5 Hoppertunity (ML 5-2)
# 6 Hard Aces (ML 8-1)

# 7 Mystery Train (Arg) (ML 30-1) has been scratched.

From here California Chrome most likely goes onto The Dubai World Cup; after that, perhaps they move him to the turf, which they were planning to do last Summer.  As for today, if California Chrome runs his race, he wins.  If not, perhaps nobody catches Alfa Bird as he rides the rail to an upset win.

The last time Hoppertunity won was the 2015 running of this event.  The last time Hard Aces won was last June, when he stuck his nose in front of Hoppertunity's at the wire in the Grade 1 Used to be Hollywood Gold Cup.  If either of these horses were to run to their true potential then they could be visiting the Winner's Circle today.  But while that's possible, it's not very likely.

RACE 9 - Clm $8k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Love de Car (ML 9-2)

B’s

# 6 Justonemorething (ML 5-1)
# 13 Razorbill (ML 5-1)
# 14 Gnarly Dude (ML 8-1)

C's

# 2 Shame On Alex (ML 6-1)
# 8 Where's My Voucher (ML 20-1)

# 10 Okaad (NL) is a program scratch.

Love de Car drops in for the lowest tag of his career, after taking the Place against more expensive last time out.  Justonemorething and Gnarly Dude exit the same contest where they completed the back half of the Superfecta against more expensive.  Razorbill won for fun at this class level last time out; but Razorbill will be facing more than double the number of opponents today than he competed against in that race.

Shame on Alex returns to action after a vacation of about four and a half months.  Shame on Alex's work tab is a little light; but he has won right off the bench before.  Where's My Voucher defeated more expensive up north three starts back.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

All A Entries with All B Entries

1/8/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Results

Race 5 - # 4 Warren's Cracker (Final Odds 9.90) - "B" Selection
Race 6 - # 1 Sweetrayofsunshine (1.70*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 7 Jade Princess (3.70) - No Selection
Race 8 - # 10 Jazzed (4.70) - "B" Selection

We got a nice price in the opening leg, which is what you hope for when you hit the "ALL" button; and we got our single home in the second leg.  So we were looking pretty good going into Race 7; but despite using more than half the field, we could not find the winner in that leg.  So when Jade Princess crossed the wire a length and three quarters in front of # 6 Annie's Curls (5.60) our play came to an inglorious end.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  4 / 1 / 7 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $522.20 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

1/8/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Don't have much in the way of an introduction today, other than to note that the final four races on the card are all for runners on the distaff side.  So with that, let's see if we can get a nice head start to the weekend by taking a run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 5 - (F) Clm $12.5k N2L - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Stellata (ML 5-1)
# 7 Sayitright Kat (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 1 Unusual Storm (ML 8-1)
# 2 Annisquam (ML 15-1)
# 4 Warren's Cracker (ML 6-1)
# 5 Summer Veil (ML 4-1)
# 6 Flowinwiththebreez (ML 4-1)
# 8 Kelbaker (ML 4-1)

C's

None

This one looks pretty wide open, at least to me; so everyone gets used in some form.

Stellata gets some much needed class relief after making the early lead against more expensive stock last time out.  Sayitright Kat has been getting improved results with each drop down the class ladder.  Unusual Storm took the Show against more expensive last time out.

Annisquam took the Show at this class level last time out and appears to be rounding into form. Warren's Cracker and Summer Veil both fit well at this class level; the concern with both is that they each seem to settle for too many minor awards.  Flowinwiththebreez and Kelbaker both graduated last time out, and are each conditioned by a trainer (Philip D'Amato and Peter Miller, respectively) who does well placing their last out winners.

RACE 6 - (F) Clm $25k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Sweetrayofsunshine (ML 9-5)

B’s

None

C's

# 3 Sky Forever (ML 6-1)
# 7 Vocalist (ML 9-2)

Sweetrayofsunshine, a convincing winner last time out against cheaper, has hit the board against more expensive in her recent form.  Sweetrayofsunshine has finished in the Exacta in seven of her eight career starts over the Santa Anita main track.  If there is a concern, it's that Sweetrayofsunshine does not show a public work since her last out win.

Sky Forever, as a daughter of Vronsky, probably prefers the grass; but she seems capable of holding her form when competing on the main track.  Vocalist was outclassed last time out, and should improve with this move back to lesser company.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 80k/C - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Right There (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 3 Daring Darling (ML 6-1)
# 4 Mokat (ML 9-5)
# 6 Annie's Curls (ML 5-1)

C's

# 1 Mrs. Norris (ML 6-1)

Rather than list all the conditions, I'll just note that all seven entrants in this contest have one career Win apiece, and that none of them will be running for the $80k tag.

Right There is the only entrant is this field to have defeated winners, having graduated by winning The Landaluce Stakes in her second career start.  Right There should appreciate competing in a field that does not include Songbird.

Daring Darling, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, won her debut last time out, and could improve with the increased distance.  Mokart has finished in the Exacta in each of her last two races; but both of those were on the grass.  On the other hand, Trainer Richard Baltas does rather well when moving his runners from turf to dirt, and he's been doing everything else right so far this meet.

Annie's Curls made a nice move forward last time out in her first start after joining Trainer Kristin Mulhall's barn.  Mrs. Norris rode the rail to victory last time out; perhaps she can do that again today.

RACE 8 - (F) Md $20k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 7 Sweeter Thancandy (ML 2-1)

B's

# 1 Mad Mango (ML 3-1)
# 10 Jazzed (ML 5-1)

C's

# 2 Miss Napper Tandy (ML 20-1)

# 6 Secret Chords (ML 5-2) and # 8 Wired for Fun (ML 30-1) have been scratched.

Sweeter Thancandy attempts to prove today that the twelfth time's the charms.  This is the cheapest tag that Sweeter Thancandy has run for, and she did take the Show last time out against more expensive.

Mad Mango runs for her third different trainer in her third career start.  In addition to being popular at the claim box, Mad Mango has also been popular with the public, having left the gate as the Post Time Favorite in each of her two career starts.

Jazzed took the Place at this class level last time out.  Jazzed may move forward today; but it's starting to appear that she is quite content with settling for minor awards.  Miss Napper Tandy is a first time starter that is a complete dark horse.  I have no idea what to expect from this horse; but at this class level, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,7 with 1 with 2 with 7 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: ALL with 1 with 2,3,4,6 with 1,7,10 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,7 with 3,7 with 2 with 7 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 3,7 with 1 with 1 with 7 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 3,7 with 1 with 2 with 2 $1.00

Total: $54.00

Post Time for Race 5 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
