1/1/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

"Each New Year's Day is like starting a treasure hunt again from scratch, with a slightly altered map." - Terri Guillemets

Happy New Year everyone, and Happy Birthday to all North American thoroughbreds.  We begin the new year engaging in familiar activity with an expectation of happier results, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) OC 40k/Alw 40000s - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Miss Fireball (Morning Line 4-1)
# 7 Star of Munster (ML 4-1)
# 8 Noble Edition (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 4 Red Stitch (ML 4-1)
# 5 Jen's Tribe (ML 20-1)
# 6 Be a Lady (ML 3-1)

C's

None

The conditions for these fillies who just hours ago were two year olds are as follows:

1) Have started for a claiming price of $40k or less (make it $50k or less if the horse is California bred or sired);

AND

2) Have never won two races;

OR

3) Claiming price of $40k.

So (and this corrects what I've written previously, so my apologies for the earlier error) the first condition is the key.  In order to compete in this contest, your filly must have started for the claiming price listed in the conditions ($50k for Cal breds; $40k for all others).  Once that condition is met, then it's the number of career wins that determines whether or not she's eligible to run without a price tag on her head.

Miss Fireball won her debut last time out by as many as she pleased at what was once known as Calder Race Course.  This will be Miss Fireball's first start under the guidance of Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Star of Munster has twice won under these conditions and will be running with the $40k price tag on her head.  Noble Edition, like Miss Fireball, was an easy winner in her debut last time out.  Noble Edition is the possessor of this field's best last out Beyer's Speed Figure.

Red Stitch has taken the Place at this class level in each of her last two starts, last time out crossing the wire just a half length behind Star of Munster.  Jen's Tribe made a late run to graduate in her second attempt last time out, and should appreciate the added distance.  Be a Lady is the only runner in this field besides Star of Munster to have defeated winners.  Note that Rafael Bejarano, who rode Be a Lady to victory last time out, keeps the mount despite the change in barns.

RACE 7 - (F) Clm $32k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 9 Pearl de Vere (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 3 Grazenette (ML 9-2)

C's

# 10 Dissension (ML 6-1)
# 11 L. A. Magic (ML 20-1)

# 6 Conquest So True (No Line) is a program scratch.  # 12 Into Oblivion (ML 15-1), # 13 Sky Forever (ML 10-1), and # 14 Summer Lady (ML 20-1) do not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

Pearl de Vere, trained by Peter Eurton, defeated $25k open claimers charging down the hill last time out, earning this field's best last out Beyer's Speed Figure in the process.  Grazenette has finished in the Trifecta in each of her two prior career tries charging down the hill, both times competing against more expensive stock than what she is facing today.

Dissension took the Show at this class level last time out.  L. A. Magic showed good early speed routing on the flats last time out, and gets some much needed class relief.

RACE 8 - OC 62k/N2X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 12 Kafister (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 3 Oligarch (ML 4-1)
# 5 Cautious Giant (ML 9-2)

C's

# 1 Serbian Syclone (ML 6-1)

# 6 Bluegrass Bronco (NL) is a program scratch.

Kafister finished in the money at this class level in each of his last two starts.  Oligarch, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, disappointed last time out as the Post Time Favorite in the Zia Park Sprint Stakes.  Expect Oligarch to improve with the freshening.

Cautious Giant won at this class level last time out; but he may not appreciate today's shorter distance.  Serbian Syclone has been within two lengths of the winner at the wire in two of his previous three starts, albeit on the turf.

RACE 9 - (F) Clm $10k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Bench Ruling (ML 3-1)
# 3 Flyin for a Livin (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 2 Bar Car (ML 8-1)

C's

# 5 Tell Her Yes (ML 7-2)
# 6 Individual Design (ML 6-1)

# 11 Hidden Reality (ML 5-1) and # 12 Private Terrace (NL) do not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

Bench Ruling moves down in claiming price but not in class, as that last contest was N2X while today's race has no conditions.  But Bench Ruling is going first off the claim for Trainer Jonathan Wong, who does quite well with such; and Bench Ruling could be speed on the rail.

Flyin for a Livin, trained by Bob Hess Jr., moves up in class after having earned this field's best last out Beyer's Speed Figure.  Bar Car took the Show against more expensive last time out.

Tell Her Yes took the Place against more expensive last time out against a next out winner, though that was more of a case of Tell Her Yes backing up slower than the rest of the field was against a well meant runner.  This is a more realistic class level for Tell Her Yes.  Individual Design goes third off the layoff, and could be rounding into form.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

$1.00 P4: 3,7,8 with 9 with 12 with 1,3 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,5,6,7,8 with 3,9 with 3,5,12 with 1,2,3 $54.00

$0.50 P4: 3,7,8 with 9 with 1 with 1,3 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3,7,8 with 9 with 12 with 5,6 $3.00

Total: $72.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:03 EST / 3:03 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
