8/30/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 10 Chiropractor (Final Odds 2.20*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - # 11 Sunbeamsfromheaven (1.00*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 6 Full Ransom (9.90) - No Selection
Race 10 - # 10 Rockin Rhythm (6.70) - "B" Selection

Rockin Rhythm actually had company on the finish line in the finale in the form of # 6 Take It Easyplease (15.60), but Take It Easyplease was DQ'd and placed fourth.  As for our play, we were already done by that point, as we had no part of the gate to wire winner in Race 9; while our single "A" Selection in that contest, # 9 Long Hot Summer (1.30*), could do no better than fourth.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  10 / 11 / 6 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $490.15 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” – Paulo Coelho

They're running the Grade 3 Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mar today.  But since it's been placed on the front half of the card, that means that it won't be a part of our play; indeed, there wasn't a single stakes contest in either of our plays this weekend.  Be that as it may, we'll be doing that which you've come to expect, as we take yet another run at the Pick Four at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 7 - OC 80k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 4 The Gomper (Morning Line 4-1)
# 10 Chiropractor (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 6 Fritz Johansen (ML 3-1)
# 8 Peacenluvpeacenluv (ML 12-1)
# 9 Forest Blue (ML 6-1)

C's

None

None of the four Also Eligibles (# 11 Dynamite Ride (ML 12-1); # 12 Rye Patch (ML 15-1); # 13 Fooled Again (ML 20-1); and # 14 Ride Hard Kowboy (ML 20-1)) draw in, so they may be spending the afternoon in the barn playing Bridge.

The Gomper took the Show at this class level last time out despite being steadied early.  Chiropractor took the Place at this class level last time out, earning this field's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  Fritz Johansen is by Unusual Heat, whose progeny tend to do well on this turf course.

Forest Blue disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in two of his last three starts.  But Forest Blue will have blinkers off today, which just might be what he needs to have something in reserve for the stretch drive.  Speaking of taking the blinkers off, Peacenluvpeacenluv earned his first Win in over a year last time out in what was his first career start without the hood.  If he can close today as he did last time out, Peacenluvpeacenluv just may find himself in it at the wire.

RACE 8 - Md $40k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Bellamy Concerto (ML 9-2)
# 11 Sunbeamsfromheaven (ML 7-2)

B's

# 3 Visibility (ML 8-1)
# 6 Blue Anchor (ML 5-1)

C's

None

Bellamy Concerto makes his first start off the claim for Trainer Henry Dominguez after having taken that Place at this class level last time out.  Sunbeamsfromheaven, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, took the Place against more expensive last time out.

Visibility took the Show at this class level last time out.  Visibility may appreciate having to cover less ground, as each of his two prior career Place finishes were at today's distance of six and a half furlongs.  Blue Anchor drops in class after pressing the pace last time out against more expensive in his career debut.  Note also the nice move Blue Anchor made working out over this main track on the 16th, suggesting that he is ready to fire off the five month vacation.

RACE 9 - (F) OC 62k/N2X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 9 Long Hot Summer (ML 7-2)

B’s

None

C's

# 1 Royal Temptress (Ire) (ML 9-2)
# 2 Mangita (ML 6-1)
# 5 Shysheisnot (ML 12-1)

None of the four Also Eligibles (# 11 Beat of The Drum (Ire) (ML 5-1); # 12 Majestic Heat (ML 3-1); # 13 Doodetta (ML 10-1); and # 14 Intoxicating Move (No Line)) draw in, so they may be spending the afternoon out on the golf course.

Long Hot Summer took the Place in the Grace 3 Senorita last time out.  Royal Temptress (Ire) has certainly had her chances at this class level; perhaps today will be the day that she hits the wire first.

Mangita took the Show last time out in the Solana Beach Handicap.  Shysheisnot, who finished behind Mangita in the Solana Beach, should improve today with a better trip.

RACE 10 - (F) Md $20k - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 11 Altaria (ML 9-2)
# 12 Kiss My Face (ML 7-2)

B's

# 4 Lynn's Chancie (ML 12-1)
# 8 Divine Tale (ML 5-1)
# 10 Rockin Rhythm (ML 5-1)

C's

None

# 3 Wisconsin Gal (No Line) is a program scratch.

Alatria took the Show against more expensive last time out.  Kiss My Face has the best last out Beyer Speed Figure in this field.  Divine Tale has finished in the Trifecta all four times that she has competed at this class level.

Rockin Rhythm has taken the Place in each of her two career starts, both at this class level.  Lynn's Chancie did much better without the blinkers in her debut than she did in her second career start with the blinkers on; so the removal of the hood as well as the drop in class may get Lynn's Chancie into the Winner's Circle today.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4,10 with 4,11 with 9 with 11,12 $8.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,6,8,9,10 with 3,4,6,11 with 9 with 4,8,10,11,12 $50.00

$0.50 P4: 4,10 with 4,11 with 1,2,5 with 11,12 $12.00

Total: $70.00

8/29/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 3 Shallot (Final Odds 5.40) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - # 6 Who's Out (3.90) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 3 Del Mar Ann (8.70) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 7 Soul Flyer (3.20*) - "B" Selection

In a little bit of deja vu we again see our Pick Four play open with one of our "A" Selections, in this case # 12 Gold Journey (5.00), dump her rider right out of the gate; an occurrence which again gave us an early warning signal that today was not going to be our day.  Incidentally, kudos to Betamerica.com for refunding WPS wagers to their clients who bet on Gold Journey, as the Del Mar stewards clearly erred in not declaring her a non-starter.  While it had no effect on our bottom line, such an exemplary customer service act is deserving of high praise indeed.  As for our play, it falls significantly short of earning high praise; for while we had 'em all. we didn't have 'em all on any one ticket.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  3 / 6 / 3 / 7  were rewarded with a payout of $1,360.35 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/29/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Yest, it's true: there really are horse races in the United States today outside of Saratoga.  While we wish all the best to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, as well as the best of luck to all those playing the Saratoga card, we'll be focusing our attention on the opposite coast, as we take yet another run at the Pick Four at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 7 - (F) Clm $16k N2L - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Matter of Luck (Morning Line 9-2)
# 12 Gold Journey (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 10 Little But Lucky (ML 5-1)

C's

# 3 Shallot (ML 5-1)
# 5 Sweet Mz. Poppet (ML 6-1)
# 7 Rock N Bunny (ML 15-1)

# 4 Lady Dash (ML 20-1) is a program scratch; so bring in # 13 Beyond Lucky (ML 20-1) off the Also Eligible List; but let # 14 Belle Evon (ML 5-1) stay in the barn.

Matter of Luck tries winners for the first time after winning by daylight last time out while earning the best dirt last out Beyer Speed Figure in this field.  Gold Journey took the Place at this class level last time out.  Little But Lucky's form looks much better if you toss out her two turf starts.

Shallot has the best last out Beyer Speed Figure in this field, though it was earned while sprinting on the grass.  Shallot showed good early speed while winning two starts back, and Trainer Ed Freeman does quite well when moving his runners from turf to dirt.

Sweet Mz. Poppet showed good early speed against more expensive stock last time out.  Rock N Bunny crossed the wire first at this class level last time out, but had her number taken down due to an inability to run in a straight line.

RACE 8 - MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Semper Fortis (ML 5-2)

B's

# 7 Oppidum (ML 12-1)

C's

# 6 Who's Out (ML 9-2)

# 1 Justin Squared (ML 3-1) and # 5 Go Ghetto (ML 12-1) are program scratches.

Semper Fortis took the Place in his debut last time out at this class level.  The concern with Semper Fortis is that runners trained by Doug O'Neill often don't move forward in their second career starts.

Oppidum, trained by Bob Baffert, was sired by Speightstown, whose progeny tend to do rather well at first asking.  Who's Out, who debuted in the same contest as Semper Fortis, is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, whose runners often improve off their initial efforts in their second career tries.

RACE 9 - (F) OC 80k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 4 Holograeme (ML 3-1)
# 6 Pammy Whammy (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 2 Foolish Ways (Ire) (ML 10-1)
# 3 Del Mar Ann (ML 12-1)

C's

# 1 Miss Boom Boom (ML 5-2)
# 5 Sweet (ML 4-1)

Pammy Whammy and Holograeme took the Place and the Show, respectively, their last time out at this class level.  Foolish Ways (Ire) has yet to finish out of the money on grass since adding the blinkers.  Del Mar Ann had to put a price tag on her head in order to graduate, but she did close exceptionally well in that contest (her first try on grass) while winning by daylight.

Miss Boom Boom took the Place against stakes company last time out, a marked improvement over her previous effort, which saw her finish out of the money at this class level.  Sweet took the Place at this class level last time out, despite losing ground on the winner in the final furlong.

RACE 10 - [S] (F) MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 10 Moonie (ML 4-1)

B's

# 7 Soul Flyer (ML 7-2)
# 12 Parasail (ML 5-1)

C's

# 5 Lacey's Rainbow (ML 6-1)
# 13 Bella Sierra (ML 5-1)

# 11 West Mid (ML 20-1) is a program scratch; so bring in Bella Sierra off the Also Eligible List.

Moonie took the Place at this class level two starts back, which was also Moonie's most recent start on dirt and with blinkers on.

Soul Flyer has finished in the money in all three of her career starts, all at this class level.  Parasail, a first time starter, has been firing bullets in her morning workouts over this main track.  Lacey's Rainbow closed well in her debut last time out.  Bella Sierra missed by less than two lengths when she competed at this class level two starts back.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6,12 with 4 with 4,6 with 10 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 6,10,12 with 4,7 with 2,3,4,6 with 7,10,12 $36.00

A's with One C

8/23/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 10 Finest City (Final Odds 0.70*) - "A" Selection
Race 8 - The Del Mar Mile Handicap - # 10 Avanzare (6.70) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 4 Gloryzapper (0.90*) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 3 With a Twist (3.30) - "A" Selection

We used four runners in the Opening Leg of the sequence just to find the 7-10 Favorite; certainly not our finest job of handicapping (see what I did there?).  We similarly used five runners in the third leg of the sequence just to find the 9-10 Favorite; but at least that contest gave us the thrill of just missing by half a length with one of our "C" Selections, # 6 Josephine's Moment (29.40), with whom we still would have cashed, as we brought home "A's" in the other three legs.

Oh, and speaking of that third leg, it looks as if we were the only ones who were curious as to how # 2 Tatum's Gold would run.  I say that because apparently everyone else wagering knew that she wouldn't, as she was heavily un-bet from her Morning Line of 4-1 up to Final Odds of 22-1.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the other runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 4 An Unusual Group (6.50) - $200.10 Finish: 4th
# 6 Redressthebalance (Ire) (3.00*) - $101.20 Finish: 6th
# 9 Aunty Pearl (4.60) - $135.00 Finish: 3rd

But that's what might have been.  The actual winning Pick Four sequence of  10 / 10 / 4 / 3  paid $92.15 for a fifty cent wager, making for the ridiculously tiny approximate odds of 3-20 on our $80 investment.  For the record, that's only slightly better than if we had just put the whole eighty bucks on Finest City to Show.  Still, tiny as our profit may be, it is still profit; and speaking as someone who has on occasion cashed at a loss, and on even more occasions not cashed at all, I will gladly take it.

I hope you all had it with me.  May God bless us as we spend our winnings.

Onto the next race!

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/23/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

It's the day after Pacific Classic Day, and all the talk is still about Beholder and her huge win and her possibly competing against American Pharoah and man what a bad break for the fans that this is the year that the Breeders' Cup is not being held in California.  But all that is well into the future; meanwhile we've got races that we need to sort out today, as we take yet one more run at the Pick Four at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Lily Pod (Morning Line 7-2)
# 10 Finest City (ML 3-1)

B's

None

C's

# 6 Ponder Lea (ML 4-1)
# 9 She'soverthemoon (ML 6-1)

Lily Pod has finished in the Trifecta in each of her first two career starts, both against non-claiming maidens.  Finest City took the Place in her debut last time out against Gloryzapper, the Morning Line Favorite in Race 9 below.

Ponder Lea is a first time starter sired by More Than Ready, whose progeny win approximately 13% of their initial tries.  She'soverthemoon, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, had to go on the shelf after her debut effort back in February; but She'soverthemoon does show steady works leading into today's contest.

RACE 8 - The Del Mar Mile Handicap (Grade 2) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Talco (Fr) (ML 7-2)
# 10 Avanzare (ML 6-1)

B's

# 1 Pure Tactics (ML 8-1)
# 4 Bal a Bali (Brz) (ML 3-1)

C's

None

# 11 Obviously (Ire) is a program scratch.  Look for Obviously's next start to be north of the border.

Talco (Fr), winner of the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile last time out, enters this contest with the best last-out Beyer Speed Figure in this field.  Avanzare, winner of the Grade 2 Arcadia last time out, has finished in the Trifecta in nine of his ten career grass starts.

Pure Tactics is taking a pretty big jump up the class ladder today, but Pure Tactics closed extremely well into incredibly soft fractions while winning The Wickerr in his last start.  Bal a Bali (Brz) defeated Talco in the Grade 3 American two starts back; the concern is that Bal a Bali failed to show anything in the drive in his last start.

RACE 9 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Exposure (ML 3-1)

B’s

# 3 Sweetrayofsunshine (ML 7-2)
# 4 Gloryzapper (ML 5-2)

C's

# 2 Tatum's Gold (ML 4-1)
# 6 Josephine's Moment (ML 12-1)

Exposure enters this contest with a two race winning streak.  Exposure projects to be the speed of the speed in this event.

Sweetrayofsunshine shares the honor of best last out Beyer Speed Figure with Exposure.  Gloryzapper, trained by Phil D'Amato, faces winners for the first time after winning her debut last time out.  Josephine's Moment should appreciate the drop in class as well as the turn back in distance.

I mentioned that Exposure is entering this contest with a two race winning streak.  What I didn't mention is that Exposure's rider for those two wins, indeed, for her entire four race career, has been Martin Garcia.  But Garcia won't be riding the Bob Baffert trained Exposure today.  That honor instead will go to Rafael Bejarano.  Meanwhile Garcia will be taking the mount today on Tatum's Gold, trained by Steve Miyadi.  Today will be the first time in her eight race career that Tatum's Gold will have Garcia on her back.

Now I have no idea whose decision (jockey, trainer, or owner) it was for Garcia to not ride Exposure today.  But it does make me more than a little bit curious as to how Tatum's Gold will run today in this, her first effort in an open (non-state bread restricted) contest.

RACE 10 - (F) Clm $25k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 With a Twist (ML 7-2)
# 4 An Unusual Group (ML 8-1)
# 6 Redressthebalance (Ire) (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 9 Aunty Pearl (ML 6-1)

C's

# 8 Zuzu's Petals (ML 10-1)

# 1 Love Blind (Arg) (No Line), # 12 Mailbaby (Ire) (NL), # 13 Wild Bella (NL), and # 14 Forever a Fan (NL) are all program scratches.

With a Twist took the Place at this class level last time out, albeit for different connections.  An Unusual Group was sired by Unusual Heat, whose progeny seem to do rather well on this turf course.  Redressthebalance (Ire) took the Show against more expensive stock two starts back.

Aunty Pearl could have things all her own way in the early going.  Zuzu's Petals is making her turf debut today.  Zuzu's Petals damsire, General Meeting, won the Grade 3 Volante Handicap on the Santa Anita grass back in 1991.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,10 with 2,10 with 8 with 3,4,6 $12.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,10 with 1,2,4,10 with 3,4,8 with 3,4,6,9 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 6,9 with 2,10 with 8 with 3,4,6 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 3,10 with 2,10 with 2,6 with 3,4,6 $12.00
$0.50 P4: 3,10 with 2,10 with 8 with 8 $2.00

Total: $80.00

8/22/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 8 - The Del Mar Handicap - # 4 Big John B (Final Odds 2.10) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - The Pacific Classic - # 9 Beholder (2.00) - No Selection
Race 10 - # 5 K Thirty Eight (11.80) - No Selection
Race 11 - # 10 Kafister (6.40) - "B" Selection

We were wrong about Beholder.

Very wrong.

Ridiculously wrong.

In a performance that can best be described as "Wow!" Beholder saw # 5 Red Vine (4.60) gaining on her in the turn and took off as if she had a rocket under her tail, going on to win the Pacific Classic by as many as she wanted.  Just a truly remarkable effort, and one that stamps her as a legitimate contender in this Fall's Breeders' Cup Classic.  Hopefully we'll do a better job then of assessing her abilities than we did today.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  4 / 9 / 5 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $1,267.80 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/22/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

It's Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar Saturday, with the featured event being one of three Graded Stakes on the card.  We'll be looking closely at two of those contests, as we take yet another run at the Pick Four at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 8 - The Del Mar Handicap (Grade 2) - Eleven Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 1 Ashleyluvssugar (Morning Line 3-1)
# 3 Flamboyant (Fr) (ML 20-1)

B's

# 2 Ganesh (Brz) (ML 4-1)
# 4 Big John B (ML 5-2)
# 5 Little Jerry (ML 12-1)

C's

# 6 Power Ped (ML 12-1)

# 8 Finnegans Wake (ML 7-2) has been scratched.

Ashleyluvssugar was simply out-classed last time out in the Grade 1 United Nations.  The scratch of Finnegans Wake puts today's contest back on a competitive level that Ashlevlussugar should handle well.

Flamboyant (Fr) is much improved since the removal of the blinkers and the removal of, well, since he was gelded back in late April.  Flamboyant has shown a closing kick that should appreciate the stretch out in distance today.  I don't know if Flamboyant can win at this level, but I am confident that he will outrun his Morning Line odds.

Ganesh (Brz) enters this contest with the best last out Beyer Speed Figure, earned while taking the Place behind Ashleyluvssugar in the Grade 2 Charlie Whittingham.  Big John B is the defending champ, having won this contest last year, earning a career best Beyer Speed Figure in the process that he has yet to equal or surpass.

Little Jerry could be all alone on the lead for a significant portion of this contest, meaning that Little Jerry is more likely to steal this one on the front end than his Morning Line odds would suggest.  Power Ped had some trouble early last time out; expect him to be more forwardly placed in the opening stages today.

RACE 9 - The Pacific Classic (Grade 1) - Ten Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Red Vine (ML 6-1)
# 7 Catch a Flight (Arg) (ML 9-2)

B's

None

C's

# 3 Bayern (ML 6-1)
# 8 Hoppertunity (ML 5-1)

Red Vine ships in from the East for Trainer Christophe Clement having earned Beyer Speed Figures in his last two races that are greater than those earned by any of the other entrants in this field in their respective last two races.  Catch a Flight (Arg) has won three of his last four contests, all Graded Stakes events.

Bayern and Hoppertunity are the uncoupled entry of Trainer Bob Baffert.  Bayern's form is easy to decipher: if he can get comfortable on the lead early, then he can win.  Hoppertunity switches back to Jockey Martin Garcia, who was on board for each of Hopperturnity's last two victories.

You'll notice that # 9 Beholder (ML 5-2) is not on any of our tickets.  I think Beholder is an exceptional horse; but I don't think she's fast enough to keep pace with this field.  So if Beholder wins, then we lose.

RACE 10 - ALW N1X - Five Furlongs Turf

A's

# 8 Roy H (ML 5-2)

B's

# 7 Labour (Arg) (ML 3-1)

C's

# 6 Native Treasure (ML 12-1)

# 11 Bluegrass Bronco (ML 6-1) and # 12 Crimson Giant (ML 20-1) do not draw in off the Also Eligible List and get the afternoon off.

Roy H was squeezed at the start last time out, but was able to close well enough to just miss winning at this class level, taking the Place a half length in front of Labour (Arg).  While these two seem to be relatively equal in strength, if Roy H can get a clean break today, then he will be greatly advantaged, as this field does not contain the preponderance of early speed that one is used to seeing in turf sprints.

Native Treasure should improve with the return to turf.  Based on his Tomlinson Rating, Native Treasure should also appreciate the turnback in distance.

RACE 11 - Clm $32k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Unfettered (ML 12-1)
# 7 Buckleberry Grey (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 10 Kafister (ML 5-1)

C's

# 3 Oligarch (ML 6-1)
# 8 Second Proposal (ML 9-2)

Toss out his contests against Quarter Horses, and Unfettered has earned Beyer Speed Figures in each of his last three races that are superior to Beyer par for this class level.  While I will be very much surprised if Unfettered goes to Post at odds even half that of his Morning Line, he should still be a very nice price.

Buckleberry Grey took the Place against more expensive at today's distance last time out.  Kafister took the Show in that same contest.

Oligarch won at this class level two starts back, albeit for different connections.  Second Proposal jumps up a few rungs on the class ladder, but the Beyer Speed Figure that he earned last time out fits well with the contenders in this field.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 1,3 with 5,7 with 8 with 2,7 $8.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,3,4,5 with 5,7 with 7,8 with 2,7,10 $30.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 6 with 5,7 with 8 with 2,7 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 1,3 with 3,8 with 8 with 2,7 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 1,3 with 5,7 with 6 with 2,7 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 1,3 with 5,7 with 8 with 3,8 $4.00

Total: $52.00

Post Time for Race 8 is 8:40 EDT / 5:40 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

While we could blame our loss today on the racing luck that sometimes allows for a 33-1 shot to hit the wire first, that would be more than a little disingenuous on our part; as the fact is that we totally whiffed on the second leg of today's sequence, failing to find room on our tickets for any of the runners that filled out that contest's Superfecta.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  9 / 8 / 5 / 12  were rewarded with a payout of $986.25 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/16/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Things got pretty wild in U.S. Horse Racing yesterday.  The two coasts saw nearly identical Pick Six carryovers, as today's Saratoga pool will have $97,404 brought into the game from Saturday, while Sunday's Del Mar pool will have $97,933 fed into it from yesterday's proceedings.  Meanwhile, in the middle of the county, The Arlington Million anchored a Pick Five that paid $20,180.15 for a fifty cent wager.  So we'll see today if there'll be order out of all that chaos, as we take yet another run at the Pick Four at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 7 - ALW N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A's

# 9 Perfectly Majestic (Morning Line 3-1)

B's

# 2 Somethings Unusual (ML 7-2)

C's

# 7 Dead Easy (ML 12-1)

# 3 Saint Dermot (ML 15-1) and # 8 Lucky Views (ML 4-1) have been scratched.

Perfectly Majestic missed by less than a length at this class level over this turf course last time out.  Somethings Unusual was just a little more than a length back of Perfectly Majestic at the wire in that same contest.  Dead Easy has finished in the Trifecta in four of his five career turf starts, though all five were charging down the Santa Anita hill.

RACE 8 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Oh Great Idea (ML 2-1)

B's

None

C's

# 10 Where's the D (ML 20-1)

Oh Great Idea took the Place at this class level in her debut last time out.  Note that Trainer Peter Miller wins over twenty percent of the time when sending out a maiden for a second career start.  Where's the D was sired by Blame, whose progeny have been doing rather well in their initial tries.

RACE 9 - [S] (F) The Solana Beach $150k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Smoove It (ML 5-2)
# 8 Chaulk O Lattey (ML 5-1)

B's

# 4 Journey On (ML 12-1)
# 5 Chati's On Top (ML 7-2)
# 6 Heat Du Jour (ML 6-1)
# 7 Kathleen Rose (ML 6-1)

C's

# 10 She's Flush (ML 20-1)

# 9 Majestic Heat (ML 8-1) ran in The Del Mar Oaks yesterday, and therefore gets to rest today.

Smoove It missed winning the Grade 3 Wilshire by just a nose two starts back.  Chaulk O Lattey has finished in the Trifecta in all five of her career turf stars, the last two coming against open (non-state bred restricted) company.  Note also that all three of Chaulk O Lattey's career wins have come with today's rider, Rafael Bejarano, on her back.

Journey On returns from a nearly twelve month vacation; Trainer Richard Baltas wins with over thirty percent of those coming back from an extended holiday.  Chati's On Top took the Place in the state bred restricted Fran's Valentine last time out.

Heat Du Jour won this contest last year.  Kathleen Rose missed by just a length of taking the Grade 3 Robert J Frankel two starts back.  She's Flush misses by just a nose of having won her last three turf contests.

RACE 10 - Clm $8k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 11 No Contingency (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 4 I Will Follow (ML 6-1)
# 12 Sir Barclay (ML 4-1)
# 13 Razorbill (ML 10-1)

C's

# 1 May Weather (ML 20-1)

# 2 Dashing Ash (No Line) and # 14 Znelle (NL) are program scratches.  # 5 Jovita's Tuffy (ML 5-1) has also been scratched.

No Contingency took the Show at this class level last time out, earning this field's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  I Will Follow drops in class after taking the Show against more expensive two starts back.  Sir Barclay took the Place at this class level last time out.

Razorbill won by daylight the last time he competed over a non-sealed fast dirt track.  May Weather took the Show at this class level two starts back.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 9 with 6 with 2,8 with 11 $2.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,9 with 6 with 2,4,5,6,7,8 with 4,11,12,13 $24.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 9 with 6 with 10 with 11 $0.50
$0.50 P4: 9 with 6 with 2,8 with 1 $1.00

Total: $29.50

8/15/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 10 Run for Retts (Final Odds 27.60) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - The Del Mar Oaks - # 4 Sharla Rae (6.20) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 3 Melatonin (30.80) - No Selection
Race 10 - # 10 Artisticdifference (12.80) - "B" Selection

After the opening leg of the sequence I felt that we still had a chance.  After the second leg of the sequence I felt bad that I hadn't used Sharla Rae as an "A" Selection.  After the third leg of the sequence I no longer felt bad about not having Sharla Rae as an "A" Selection, because I wouldn't have bet on Melatonin with your money.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  10 / 4 / 3 / 10  were rewarded with a payout of $43,784.55 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/15/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Looks like everybody is having fun on the grass today.  Chicago has The Arlington Million; NYRA is running The Fourstardave; and SoCal has the Del Mar Oaks.  The latter is Race 8 on the card, so we'll be taking a look at it as we take yet another shot at the Pick Four at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 7 - [S] (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Plane Lucky (Morning Line 5-2)

B's

# 1 Sharpest One (ML 5-1)

C's

# 7 Song for Jade (ML 12-1)
# 9 Mc Hottie (ML 8-1)
# 10 Run for Retts (ML 10-1)

Plane Lucky, one of the four experienced runners in this field of two year olds, took the Show after leading the pack for most of the going in her debut last time out, earning this group's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  Plane Lucky's trainer, Peter Miller, wins over twenty percent of the time that he sends a maiden out for a second career start.

Sharpest One, who has finished in the money each of the two times that she has competed at this class level, could be speed on the rail today, especially with the addition of blinkers.  Song for Jade and Run for Retts are a pair of first time starters from sires (Songandaprayer and Minsters Wild Cat, respectively) whose progeny tend to do well at first asking.

Mc Hottie was up on the pace in her debut last time out before being forced to steady; perhaps the rider change today will help her improve off that effort.

RACE 8 - (F) The Del Mar Oaks (Grade 1) - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Prize Exhibit (GB) (ML 5-2)

B's

# 4 Sharla Rae (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Majestic Heat (ML 15-1)
# 8 Sunset Glow (ML 3-1)

If Prize Exhibit (GB) repeats the form that she showed in winning the Grade 2 San Clemente last time out or the Grade 3 Senorita two starts back, then she will almost certainly make it three in a row today.

Sharla Rae closed well last time out in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks, but that could be explained by the fact that she did no running at all in the early going of that one.  Perhaps her rider that day, Jockey Joel Rosario, was suspect of Sharla Rae's ability to make ten furlongs.  Anyway, the last time Sharla Rae had only nine furlongs to deal with was back in May when she took the Place in the Grade 2 Honeymoon.  A repeat of that effort by Sharla Rae just might find her battling with Prize Exhibit at the wire today.

Majestic Heat is taking a huge jump up the class ladder today after defeating OC 80k/N1X company last Sunday over this turf course.  But Majestic Heat has shown incredible form in all but one of her career grass starts, and any decedent of Unusual Heat must be respected when stepping onto this turf course.

Count Sunset Glow among those who miss the synthetic surface at this race track.  Or maybe Sunset Glow just misses being a juvenile.  Anyway, Sunset Glow's three year old form has been that of a horse that's very good, but not quite good enough to win at this level.  To compound the problem Sunset Glow prefers to be up on the early lead; should Sunset Glow try to go to the front of the line today, she just may find # 2 Paulina's Love (ML 12-1) already there.  Still, Sunset Glow can't be totally ignored here, as a return to her two year old form just might be good enough for her to get her picture taken today.

RACE 9 - OC 40k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Rule He Will (ML 7-2)
# 4 Whine for Wine (ML 5-1)
# 8 Distinctive B (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 5 Allidoisdreamofyou (ML 8-1)
# 6 Unblunted (ML 15-1)

C's

None

# 1 Crimson Giant (ML 30-1) has been scratched.  Bring in # 13 Embellishing Bob (ML 10-1) off the Also Eligible List.

Rule He Will wired the field the last time that he competed on a fast dirt track, earning a Beyer Speed Figure in the process that fits well at this class level.  In addition, the scratch of Crimson Giant means that Rule He Will will be able to ride the rail today.

Whine for Wine proved to be competitive at this class level before going on the shelf in February.  Whine for Wine has been working well for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer leading up to this contest, and should appreciate that the one race "Blinkers On" experiment is over.

Distinctive B had to drop way down into the Md $20k ranks two starts back in order to graduate; but he did so by the length of the grandstand.  Last time out Distinctive B ran in an N2L Starter Allowance (and, by the way, don't strain your eyes looking for the N2L designation in the DRF Past Performances, 'cause it ain't there) and was well clear at the wire.

Now, if you're handicapping on class, then you're probably not looking to put Distinctive B on your tickets.  And because the victories in his last two starts came at such lower levels, you may also not think much of the Beyer Speed Figures that Distinctive B earned in those two wins, feeling that they must be discounted because Distinctive B was able to wire pretty weak company.

But look at those fractions that Distincitve B set in those two races.  Those numbers would fit right in at this class level.  Also look at the company lines.  The Place horse in that first victory, Soul Crusher, not only won his next time, but also the time after that, crossing the wire over two lengths in front of the rest of the field.  Maybe Distinctive B will be exposed as a pretender at this class level; but I'm betting that Distinctive B has the speed to make him live against this field, at what could be a very nice price.

Allidoisdreamofyou had a sharp work over this main track Wednesday, and runners tend to do well when switching to Trainer Ron Ellis' barn.  Unblunted took the Place at this class level two starts back, and goes third off the layoff for Trainer Michael McCarthy.

RACE 10 - (F) MSW - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Sweeter Thancandy (ML 6-1)
# 6 Illuminant (ML 7-2)

B's

# 3 Girl Downstairs (ML 12-1)
# 9 Redheads Rule (ML 3-1)
# 10 Artisticdifference (ML 6-1)

C's

# 8 Nashoba's County (ML 8-1)

# 13 Boat Drinks (ML 5-1) does not draw in off the Also Eligible List.  No word as to whether or not Boat Drinks will be spending the afternoon enjoying cocktails out on the yacht.

Sweeter Thancandy closed well at this class level last time out.  Illuminant took the Place at this class level in her only prior try on grass.

Girl Downstairs took the Place at this class level two starts back, going around two turns on the flats at Santa Anita.  Redheads Rule took the Show at this class level two starts back.  Artisticdifference closed well over this turf course in her last start.  Nashoba's County, a first time starter sired by Candy Ride (Arg), shows a steady workout pattern over the past two months leading into today's contest.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3 with 6 with 2,4,8 with 2,6 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,3 with 4,6 with 2,4,5,6,8 with 2,3,6,9,10 $50.00

8/9/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 6 - # 1 Majestic Heat (Final Odds 1.90*) - "A" Selection
Race 7 - # 10 Surfside Tiara (2.30) - "B" Selection
Race 8 - The La Jolla - # 9 Prospect Park (2.00) - "B" Selection
Race 9 - # 7 Best in Class (2.00*) - "C" Selection

For the second Sunday in a row, we had 'em all, but not all on any one ticket.  We outsmarted the public in Race 7, as we had the winner without using the Post Time Favorite, # 7 Jade Princess (1.20*) on any of our tickets; but in the end the public outsmarted us, betting Best in Class down from her Morning Line odds of 5-1 and watching her romp home over five lengths ahead of the rest of the field in the finale.

For the record, here are the $0.50 Will Pays for the runners to which we were alive in the finale:

# 2 Rosewhitenblue (8.00) - $149.25 Finish: 2nd
# 3 Lazy Daisy May (16.80) - $525.95 Finish: 5th
# 4 Peppy Bolly (4.00) - $81.25 Finish: 4th
# 5 Rich in Tadition (37.30) - $578.45 Finish: 7th
# 9 It's Aine (8.80) - $164.95 Finish: 6th
# 11 Anima Perfect (10.40) - $198.45 Finish: 9th
# 12 Lil Cheyenne (6.20) - $152.80 Finish: 3rd

But such was not to be.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  1 / 10 / 9 / 7  were rewarded with a payout of $110.45 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/9/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

The Grade 3 La Jolla is the featured race today at Del Mar.  It's Race 8 on the card; thus making it part of the Pick Four that we'll be chasing at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 8 - (F) OC 80k/N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 1 Majestic Heat (Morning Line 7-2)

B’s

None

C's

# 5 Miss Gifted (ML 3-1)
# 6 Causeway Carolyn (ML 6-1)
# 10 Holograeme (ML 6-1)

Majestic Heat closed well against state bred company last time out, earning this field's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  Miss Gifted won her debut last time out charging down the hill at Santa Anita, albeit with a price tag on her head.  In fact, Miss Gifted got claimed in that contest, and now runs for Trainer John Sadler, who does rather well with those who go first off the claim.

Causeway Carolyn graduated last time out against non-claiming maidens.  Holograeme moves from dirt to turf for Trainer Phil D'Amato, who shows a positive ROI with such.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Dreamy Art (ML 5-2)

B's

# 10 Surfside Tiara (ML 3-1)

C's

None

# 9 Treasuring (ML 9-2) has been scratched.

Dreamy Art took the Place in her debut last time out, crossing the wire over three lengths clear of the Show finisher.  Surfside Tiara took the Place in her debut last time out, when she disappointed as the Post Time Favorite.

RACE 8 - The La Jolla (Grade 3) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Om (ML 7-2)
# 6 Papacoolpapacool (ML 3-1)

B's

# 8 Pretentious (ML 20-1)
# 9 Prospect Park (ML 5-2)

C's

# 10 Royal Albert Hall (GB) (ML 10-1)

Om was a clear winner two starts back against OC 80k/N1X company; his only prior start on the grass.  Papacoolpapacool, trained by Phil D'Amato, is a two-time stakes winner on the turf.

Pretentious is much improved since putting the blinkers on.  Prospect Park will be tough to beat if his dirt form carries over to the grass.  Royal Albert Hall (GB) closed well last time out while taking the Show in The Oceanside.

RACE 9 - (F) Clm $8k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Lazy Daisy May (ML 15-1)
# 4 Peppy Bolly (ML 4-1)
# 9 It's Aine (ML 6-1)
# 12 Lil Cheyenne (ML 6-1)

B’s

# 2 Rosewhitenblue (ML 6-1)
# 5 Rich in Tradition (ML 12-1)
# 11 Amina Perfect (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Smil'n From Above (ML 20-1)
# 6 Datwatdaddydo (ML 15-1)
# 7 Best in Class (ML 5-1)
# 8 Walloping Lula (ML 8-1)
# 10 Angel Be Quick (ML 30-1)

# 13 Lexie Arleen (ML 5-2) does not draw in off the Also Eligible List, so she'll get to watch the kick off of the NFL Hall of Fame game.

Lazy Daisy May took the Show at this class level last time out.  Lazy Daisy May is two-for-four lifetime at today's distance.  Peppy Bolly defeated more expensive earlier this year.  It's Aine has the best last out Beyer Speed Figure in this field.  Lil Cheyenne goes third off the layoff for Trainer Mark Glatt.

Rosewhitenblue has finished in the Exacta in five of her fourteen career starts on a fast dirt track.  Rich in Tradition won clear against conditioned claimers last time out.  Amina Perfect goes first off the claim for Trainer Steve Miyadi, who has a positive ROI with such.  The C's are everyone else.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 1 with 4 with 3,6 with 3,4,9,12 $8.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1 with 4,10 with 3,6,8,9 with 2,3,4,5,9,11,12 $28.00

$0.50 P4: 1 with 4 with 3,6 with 1,6,7,8,10 $5.00

8/8/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 4 Ultimate Holiday (Final Odds 6.50) - No Selection
Race 8 - The John C Mabee - # 8 Elektrum (Ire) (3.30) - No Selection
Race 9 - # 7 Nextdoorneighbor (1.30*) - "A" Selection
Race 10 - # 2 Barbs Angel (1.80*) - "A" Selection

We were wrong about # 9 Black Betsy (4.10) getting the early lead in the opening leg of the sequence.  Of course, she had to run the entire backstretch and into the turn ten wide (in a nine horse field!) to do it, but Black Betsy did have the early lead.  Anyway, we went six deep in a nine horse field and still managed to miss the winner; definitely not a good showing.  We also missed the winner of the J C Mabee; congrats to the trip handicappers who recognized Elektrum (Ire) would do better today with some running room; indeed, they thought well enough of her to bet her down to nearly half of her Morning Line 6-1 odds.

So we managed to whiff on half of our picks.  Too bad we didn't just take our bankroll and just put it all on the Late Double.  But that wasn't the pool that we were swimming in, and you don't get credit for having Gin when you're playing Hearts.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  4 / 8 / 7 / 2  were rewarded with a payout of $201.40 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/8/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Big doings on the East Coast today, as they're running The Whitney at Saratoga.  Meanwhile Del Mar is offering a pair of Graded Stakes on its card: The Best Pal for two year olds, which will be Race 5, and The John C Mabee, for fillies and mares on the grass.  The latter is carded for Race 8, which makes it a part of the Pick Four that we'll be chasing at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Power of Ten (Morning Line 6-1)
# 7 Discatsonthesquare (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 8 Fast and Foxy (ML 8-1)

C's

# 3 Frisco Fog (ML 12-1)
# 5 Pearl de Vere (ML 3-1)
# 9 Black Betsy (ML 6-1)

Power of Ten's last eleven races have been at the OC 62k/N2X level, in which she finished in the money six times, including one win.  Power of Ten now drops back down to the N1X level and gets a a change in rider, the combination of which could get her to the Winner's Circle today.

Discatsonthesquare has finished in the money at this class level in each of her last two races.  Fast and Foxy and Frisco Fog look to be the primary speed in this contest.  Black Betsy got burnt in a speed duel last time out; perhaps new rider Tyler Baze will be able to get her to sit back and wait.

Pearl de Vere earned a pair of Beyer Speed Figures in her last two races that, if either were to be repeated, could see her crossing the wire first today.  But both those Beyers were earned by charging down the hill at Santa Anita; Pearl de Vere's more recent dirt form has been much less impressive.

RACE 8 - (F) The John C Mabee (Grade 2) - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Emotional Kitten (ML 4-1)
# 3 Fanticola (ML 5-2)

B's

None

C's

# 4 Stormy Lucy (ML 4-1)
# 5 Personal Diary (ML 15-1)

# 6 Gusto Dolce (Uru) (ML 20-1) has been scratched.

It looks like this one boils down to either Fanticola early or Emotional Kitten late.  These two strike me as the best two in this field; now it's just a matter of which performs better at their preferred running style.

Stormy Lucy could be the one catching Fanticola late if Emotional Kitten fails to fire.  Personal Diary ran the best race of her life almost one year ago today when she won the Del Mar Oaks in her only prior contest on this turf course.  Perhaps the return to this setting will inspire Personal Diary to excel today.

RACE 9 - Clm $25k - Six and a Half Furlongs

A’s

# 7 Nextdoorneighbor (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 1 War Academy (ML 8-1)
# 6 Sacred Ovation (ML 6-1)

C's

# 2 Real Heat (ML 12-1)
# 9 Expo and Fig (ML 4-1)

Nextdoorneighbor is 5-1-1 in the seven contests that he's run since being claimed by Trainer Peter Miller.  War Academy takes a huge drop down the class ladder and could be speed on the rail.  If Sacred Ovation can return to the form that he showed in his two races prior to his most recent, then he could be getting his picture taken today.

Real Heat earned a Beyer Speed Figure two starts back that could get the job done today if repeated.  However, Real Heat has earned only one Beyer within a dozen points of that number in his most recent twelve starts.  Expo and Fig has won each of his last two races convincingly, albeit against much cheaper competition.

RACE 10 - (F) Md $20k - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Barbs Angel (ML 2-1)

B's

# 9 Unwarrented (ML 20-1)
# 12 Chicago Angel (ML 5-2)

C's

# 3 My Moment Too (ML 20-1)
# 5 Lady Juliet (ML 8-1)
# 7 Miss Green Pond (ML 10-1)

# 13 Felicity Doll (ML 20-1) and # 14 Stormys' Blazer (ML 20-1) do not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

Barbs Angel took the Place last time against more expensive, earning this field's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  Unwarrented is a home bred debut runner who looks to be well meant.  Chicago Angel has finished in the money at this class level in each of her last four races, and seeks to prove that the fourteenth time is the charm.

My Moment Too took the Show at this level two starts back, albeit some sixteen months ago.  Lady Juliet drops in for the lowest price tag of her career.  Miss Green Pond took the Show at this class level last time out.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6,7 with 2,3 with 7 with 2 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 6,7,8 with 2,3 with 1,6,7 with 2,9,12 $27.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,5,9 with 2,3 with 7 with 2 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 6,7 with 4,5 with 7 with 2 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 6,7 with 2,3 with 2,9 with 2 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 6,7 with 2,3 with 7 with 3,5,7 $6.00

Total: $46.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:10 EDT / 5:10 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

Race 8 - # 7 One More (9.50) - "C" Selection
Race 9 - # 5 Flat Gone (1.50*) - "A" Selection

As sometimes happens, we had 'em all, but not all on any one ticket.  Our failure to recognize I'll Wrap It Up and Blameitonthelaw as "A" contenders doomed our play to failure.  Yes, upgrading One More from a "C" to a "B" would also have led us to the cashier's window; but failing to recognize the winners of the first two legs as top contenders seems in retrospect to have been the more egregious error.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  9 / 3 / 7 / 5  were rewarded with a payout of $271.85 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

8/2/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

Big doings on the East Coast, as Triple Crown winner American Pharoah returns to competition in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.  As for us, we'll be turning our attention to the West, as we take yet another run at the Pick Four at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 6 - Alw 40000s N2L - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Cervaro (Morning Line 3-1)

B’s

# 2 Silver Torch (ML 8-1)
# 4 All Run (ML 6-1)
# 9 I'll Wrap It Up (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Apostle Paul (ML 12-1)
# 11 Commander King (ML 6-1)

# 7 Lambo Luxx (No Line) is a program scratch.   That allows Commander King to draw in off the Also Eligible List; but # 12 Derby Glass (ML 5-1) and # 13 Mister Blue (ML 8-1) don't draw in, and get to hang out in the barn.

Note for future reference that this one is for horses that have never won two races (N2L), as that information won't be found in future DRF Past Performances (at least not until they finally fix that flaw).

Cervaro goes first off the claim for Trainer Mike Puype, who wins with approximately 35% of such.  Silver Torch closed well two starts back while taking the Show at this class level.

I'll Wrap It Up and All Run took the Place and Show, respectively, their last time out, charging down the Santa Anita hill at this class level.  Apostle Paul and Commander King finished a head apart while filling out the Superfecta last time out at this class level.

RACE 7 - MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Semper Fortis (ML 4-1)
# 9 Who's Out (ML 3-1)

B's

# 3 Blameitonthelaw (ML 5-2)

C's

# 7 Global Event (ML 7-2)

# 1 Street Rules (ML 12-1) has been scratched.

This one's for juveniles, with all but one of the entrants (# 4 Phantom Heat (ML 20-1)) being first time starters.

Semper Fortis is sired by Distorted Humor; Who's Out is sired by Tale of Ekati; the get of both those sires do quite well in their first attempts.

Blameitonthelaw is trained by John Sadler, who wins a little over twenty percent of the time that he sends out a debut runner.  Blameitonthelaw is sired by Blame, whose progeny win about eighteen percent of the time at first asking.  The concern with Blameitonthelaw is distance, as he may need more than five and a half furlongs to show his best stuff.

Global Event is trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Martin Garcia; the Baffert / Garcia combo scored with first time starter One Last Shot in yesterday's Race 7 here at Del Mar at odds of 5-1.

RACE 8 - (F) OC 62k/N2X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 1 Artistic Charm (GB) (ML 5-2)
# 4 Royal Temptress (Ire) (ML 3-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 6 Mangita (ML 12-1)
# 7 One More (ML 6-1)

# 5 All Star Bub (ML 12-1) has been scratched.

Artistic Charm (GB) steps up in class after defeating OC N1X company on the turf by daylight last time out.  Artistic Charm does her best running on the front end, so the rail draw should suit her well.

Royal Temptress has taken the Place at this class level in each of her last two races.  Expect Royal Temptress to be running well late.

Mangita turned in a fine effort two starts back and could improve off that effort if she can avoid an early pace due.  One More has finished in the money each of the last two times that she competed at this class level.

RACE 9 - Clm $16k N2L - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 With the Breeze (ML 6-1)
# 5 Flat Gone (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 8 Cowtownmary (ML 15-1)
# 12 Go First (ML 5-1)

C's

None

# 13 Dive Down (ML 10-1) does not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

With the Breeze has had only one prior race on a fast dirt track.  That race went around two turns; and despite fading badly in the stretch, With the Breeze earned a Beyer Speed Figure in that contest that tops the career best for most of his opponents in this field.  A repeat of that effort could land With the Breeze in the Winner's Circle today.

Flat Gone took the Place against more expensive last time out, earning this field's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  Cowtownmary could be the quickest out of what looks to be a pretty paceless group.  Go First looks like he's positioned to move forward off his last race.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 6 with 8,9 with 1,4 with 3,5 $8.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,4,6,9 with 3,8,9 with 1,4 with 3,5,8,12 $48.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 1,11 with 8,9 with 1,4 with 3,5 $8.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 7 with 1,4 with 3,5 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 8,9 with 6,7 with 3,5 $4.00

Total: $70.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:40 EDT / 4:40 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/1/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Results

Race 7 - # 4 One Last Shot (Final Odds 5.10) - "C" Selection
Race 8 - The Clement L Hirsch - # 1 Beholder (0.30*) - "A" Selection
Race 9 - # 8 Smooth Roller (2.30*) - "B" Selection
Race 10 - # 2 Win the Space (5.50) - No Selection

We managed to get an "A" Selection home, and a single "A" at that.  But that's about it for the good news today; as we underestimated the winner of the opener, and totally whiffed on the winner of the finale.  Today would have been a good day to just put all our money on our single "A", as that play would have given us profit, while our Pick Four play today brings us nothing but heartache.

Oh well; onto the next race.

Meanwhile, those who had the correct Pick Four sequence of  4 / 1 / 8 / 2  were rewarded with a payout of $241.20 for their fifty cent wager.  May God bless them as they spend their winnings.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo

8/1/15 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

A new month begins; and, as with all things new, hope is re-born.  The featured race today at Del Mar is the Clement L Hirsch, a Grade 1 for older fillies and mares.  The C L Hirsch is Race 8 on the card, so it's part of the Pick Four that we'll be chasing at the place where the turf meets the surf.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Seaside Glory (Morning Line 12-1)
# 2 Oh Great Idea (ML 5-2)
# 8 Corps de Ballet (ML 15-1)
# 10 Shakti (ML 7-2)

B's

# 5 Flying Tinkerbell (ML 15-1)
# 9 Two Steps of Glory (ML 8-1)

C's

# 3 Forever Darling (ML 8-1)
# 4 One Last Shot (ML 3-1)

None of the horses on the Also Eligible List (#11 Miss Priss (ML 20-1); # 12 Asian's Way (No Line); # 13 My Dynamo (ML 20-1); # 14 Touch and Smile (ML 5-1)) draw in.

This one is for two year old fillies, with eight of the ten runners going to the post for the first time in their respective careers.  There seems to be a lot of young talent here; I'll be very much surprised if this contest doesn't turn into a key race.

Seaside Glory is a first time starter trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who wins approximately thirty percent of the time that he sends out a debut runner.  Oh Great Idea and Shakti are two first time starters trained by Peter Miller.  Both Oh Great Idea and Shakti have posted bullet workouts over this main track within the past two weeks.  Corps de Ballet, another first time starter, is sired by Speightstown, whose progeny win approximately seventeen percent of their debut tries.  Note that Seaside Glory is also sired by Speightstown.

One Last Shot, a debut runner trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Martin Garcia, is sired by Any Given Saturday, whose progeny win at first asking slightly less than eleven percent of the time.  The concern with One Last Shot is the almost two week gap between her works of 7/11 and 7/24.

Flying Tinkerbell is a first time starter that has earned a pair of bullet works over the Del Mar main track.  Two Steps of Glory is sired by Two Step Salsa, whose get win nearly twenty percent of their debuts.  Forever Darling is a first time starter sired by Congrats, whose offspring win approximately twelve percent of their debuts.

RACE 8 - (F) The Clement L Hirsch (Grade 1) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Beholder (ML 6-5)

B's

None

C's

None

# 9 Gusto Dolce (Uru) (ML 20-1) has been scratched.

Beholder is the best horse in this race.  If Beholder brings her "A" game, she wins.  If Beholder brings her "B" game, she probably still wins.  So this is our play; if Beholder loses, then so do we, as she's going to be the only runner from this contest on our tickets.

RACE 9 - OC 40k/N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Old Man Lake (ML 8-1)
# 6 Downtown C. T. (ML 10-1)

B’s

# 5 Just Kidding (ML 5-1)
# 7 Perfect Set (ML 3-1)
# 8 Smooth Roller (ML 7-2)

C's

# 1 Yahoo Tahoe (ML 10-1)
# 4 Seeking the West (ML 5-1)
# 10 Red Button (ML 10-1)

Old Man Lake took the Show against state-bred stakes company last time out.  Downtown C. T. took the Place at this approximate class level last time out.

Just Kidding is trying winners for the first time; but he has been showing consistent steady improvement since moving to two turn races on the dirt.  Perfect Set, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, has shown sharp improvement since donning the blinkers.  Smooth Roller won his career debut last time out, earning a Beyer Speed Figure in the process that fits in well with these.

Yahoo Tahoe fits well with this group on class; but the switch to real dirt from the synthetic surface is a concern.  Seeking the West has settled for a lot of minor awards in the past; maybe the light bulb turns on today.  Red Button is getting some huge class relief here; though Red Button's best races heretofore have been on the grass.

RACE 10 - MSW - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 4 Second Summer (ML 6-1)
# 7 Dylan Ward (ML 3-1)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Rosicky (ML 7-2)
# 5 Mixio (ML 20-1)
# 11 Tirpitz (ML 5-1)

Second Summer closed well and took the Show at this class level in his only prior career try on the grass, which was over this turf course.  Dylan Ward, now trained by Phil D'Amato, took the Place at this class level last time out.

Rosicky, who finished in the money in all four of his prior career starts, tries the grass for the first time.  Mixio is a first time starter sired by Arch, whose progeny win approximately eleven percent of the time at first asking.  Tirpitz has twice finished in the money at this class level, both times charging down the Santa Anita hill.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 1,2,8,10 with 1 with 3,6 with 4,7 $16.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,2,5,8,9,10 with 1 with 3,5,6,7,8 with 4,7 $30.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3,4 with 1 with 3,6 with 4,7 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 1,2,8,10 with 1 with 1,4,10 with 4,7 $12.00
$0.50 P4: 1,2,8,10 with 1 with 3,6 with 1,5,11 $12.00

Total: $74.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:10 EDT / 5:10 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
