2/2/19 Santa Anita Rainbow Pick Six - Preview

Saturday brings us a triple header in Triple Crown preps, with the Withers in New York, the Holy Bull in Florida, and the Robert B Lewis in California.  In addition, the good folks in Arcadia have decided to make Saturday a mandatory payout day for their Jackpot Pick Six wager.  So while my better sense says to pass on the card due to the horrible weather that is being forecast for SoCal, a mandatory payout of a pool that just might hit eight figures is much too tempting to let go by.  So with all that said let's get to it, as I take a run at The Rainbow Pick Six at The Great Race Place.

RACE 5 - MSW - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Omaha Beach (Morning Line 8-5)

B's

# 8 One Bad Boy (ML 3-1)
# 9 Mo Reserve (ML 8-1)

C's

# 1 Polar (ML 4-1)
# 3 Nolde (ML 30-1)
# 4 Alleva (ML 8-1)
# 7 Moonoverthebayou (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 2 Koa (ML 15-1) and # 6 Air Boss (ML 15-1)

Omaha Beach has finished in the Trifecta in each of his four career starts, all at this class level.  One Bad Boy closed well in his debut last time out.  Mo Reserve could move up with the return to one turn racing.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 6 - The Robert B Lewis (Grade 3) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A's

# 4 Gunmetal Gray (ML 9-5)

B's

# 5 Mucho Gusto (ML 8-5)

C's

# 1 Kid Cantina (ML 20-1)
# 2 Magnificient McCool (ML 8-1)

# 3 Easy Shot (ML 8-1)
# 6 Nolo Contesto (ML 5-2)

Mucho Gusto may be the better horse, but Gunmetal Gray is the one that has already proven that he can win going around two turns.  Of course, this one could come down to who does the better job of handling the off track Saturday.  The backup "C" Selections are the rest of the field.

RACE 7 - Md $30k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 9 R B Eye (ML 7-2)

B's

# 3 Calder Vale (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Command the Moment (ML 8-1)
# 2 Camzul (ML 4-1)

# 4 Cowboy Tommy (ML 20-1)
# 5 Toby Time (ML 5-1)
# 6 Ministersdon'tlie (ML 6-1)
# 7 Blue Skye Jade (ML 12-1)

# 8 Royal Aspirations (ML 6-1)
# 10 Sword Master (ML 12-1)

I was very tempted to make R B Eye a big ticket single here, as R B Eye has shown the ability to hit the board at this level, and I really believe that R B Eye will benefit from having to go around just one turn Saturday.  But ultimately I decided that I wanted a little more coverage; so Calder Vale, who has taken the Place at this class level in the past, goes on the big ticket as well; while all other entrants will be used as backup "C" Selections.

RACE 8 - MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 My Mandate (ML 3-1)

B's

# 4 Parsimony (ML 6-1)
# 7 C Falls (ML 20-1)

C's

# 1 Time Is Now (ML 5-1)
# 2 Platinum Nights (ML 8-1)
# 3 Scalper (ML 6-1)

# 6 Whitehouse Road (ML 4-1)
# 8 Norski (ML 6-1)
# 9 Young Phillip (ML 10-1)

My Mandate has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of his last two races, and My Mandate looks to be the one that they'll have to catch if they want to win.  Parsimony could improve going second off the layoff.

C Falls is a debut runner out of the unraced Maiden America, who also foaled Graded Stakes winner Ten City.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 9 - The San Pasqual (Grade 2) - Nine Furlongs Dirt

A's

# 8 Battle of Midway (ML 5-2)

B's

# 1 Pavel (ML 8-1)
# 7 McKinzie (ML 4-5)

C's

# 2 Dalmore (ML 20-1)
# 5 Giant Expectations (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 3 Dabster (ML 5-1); # 4 Shivermetimbers (ML 30-1); and # 6 Sonneteer (ML 20-1)

Going three deep in a five horse contest with a 4-5 Morning Line Favorite is rarely a good idea; but the only poor race of McKinzie's career is also the only prior race where he wasn't facing runners that were all the same age as he; so it makes sense to be cautious of his chances here.  Therefore, I'm making Battle of Midway my top selection; and I'm including the classy Pavel on the big ticket.  The rest of the field comprise my backup "C" Selections.

RACE 10 - Clm $12.5k N2L - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Isee It in Hiseyes (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 1 Candyman Garret (ML 7-2)
# 4 Das Bear (ML 8-1)
# 10 Cayate (ML 3-1)

C's

# 2 Advantageous (ML 30-1)
# 3 Hesa Ranegade (ML 30-1)
# 6 Royal Seeker (ML 15-1)
# 7 Duke of Fallbrook (ML 15-1)
# 9 Giddymeister (ML 6-1)

# 11 Typhoon Harry (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 8 Warrior's Lullaby (ML 20-1)

Isee It in Hiseyes has taken the Place twice in his last three races at this class level; though it's fair to wonder if perhaps Isee It in Hiseyes settles for too many minor awards.  Candyman Garret could improve off the freshening.

Das Bear ships in from out of state after winning impressively last time out.  Cayate could move up with the drop in class.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
