2/28/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Today marks the final day of February racing at Santa Anita this year; just four more months left in the current meet!  More pointedly, soon it'll be Spring, and SoCal will be able to say goodbye to this wintry eighty degree weather.  And yes, you all were warned some time back that these introductions could get rather strained.  But at least this intro is done, so now we can get to examining The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 4 Zip the Monkey (Morning Line 9-2)
# 7 Los Gatos (ML 5-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 3 The Last Express (ML 5-1)
# 11 Durango Flier (ML 7-2)

# 12 Johns Journey (No Line) is a program scratch.  Also scratch # 13 Benba (ML 20-1) and # 14 Global Magician (ML 4-1), as neither draws in from the Also Eligible List.

Zip the Monkey graduated in the only prior turf route of his four race career.  Zip the Monkey took the Place at this class level last time out, albeit in a contest that was taken off the turf.  Los Gatos should improve going second off the layoff.

The Last Express returns from an extended layoff for Trainer Richard Baltas, who tends to do well with such.   Durango Flier has proven that he can compete at this level; unfortunately, Durango Flier has also proven a willingness to settle for minor awards.

RACE 7 - (F) MSW - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Georgia Blue (ML 7-2)

B's

# 5 Ghostslayer (ML 4-1)
# 6 Emmzy (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Social Column (ML 5-1)
# 4 Marina Green (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 7 Lily (ML 3-1)

Georgia Blue took the Place in her debut last time out charging down the hill.  Not sure why Georgia Blue is being switched to the main track, but her bullet work from the gate earlier this month suggests that she should handle the change in surface.

Emmzy, trained by Bob Baffert, makes her second career start after missing the break in her debut.  Ghostslayer, Social Column, and Marina Green are a trio of first time starters in a contest that doesn't appear to have a standout experienced entrant.  I give the edge to Ghostslayer over the other two due to Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's success with debut runners.

RACE 8 - Alw 40000s N2L - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 All Star Parade (ML 4-1)

B’s

# 4 Iancol (ML 3-1)
# 9 Visitation (ML 15-1)

C's

# 5 Wrightwood (ML 8-1)
# 6 Ultra Sharp (ML 7-2)
# 8 Pioneerof the West (ML 8-1)

Note for future reference that this one is for horses that have never won two races (N2L), as that information won't be included in future DRF Past Performances (at least, not until they finally fix that flaw).

All Star Parade took the Show at this class level last time out.  Iancol made a nice move forward last time out with the return to two turn racing.  Visitation took the Show at this class level last time out, albeit on the grass.

Wrightwood goes second off the layoff for Trainer Mike Harrington, who tends to do well with such.  Ultra Sharp tries winners for the first time after winning comfortably last time out.  Pioneerof the West seemed to wake up in his first drop into the open claiming ranks last time out; this move into company restricted to no more than one Win may the additional class relief that he needs.

RACE 9 - (F) Clm $25k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 1 Odisseia (Ire) (ML 5-1)
# 3 Kadesha (Fr) (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 5 Belle Et Bete (Ire) (ML 9-2)
# 8 True History (ML 6-1)
# 9 So Good to Go (ML 5-1)

C's

# 2 West Coast Storm (ML 5-1)

# 4 Kristinite (NL) is a program scratch.

Odisseia (Ire) took the Show at this class level last time out, and looks like she could be all alone up front early.  Kadesha (Fr) took the Place at this class level last time out against a next out winner.

Belle Et Bete (Ire), trained by Phil D'Amato, gets some much needed class relief.  True History took the Show at this class level last time out.

So Good to Go was a winner on the east coast the last time that she competed on the turf at this class level.  West Coast Storm should improve with the return to grass.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

Jimbo
