2/18/17 Golden Gate Fields Golden Pick 6 - Preview

The Road to the Kentucky Derby passes through Golden Gate Fields Saturday, as the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby has its thirty-sixth running.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below, as we take another run at The Golden Pick Six at the place where the Bay comes to play.

RACE 4 - Clm $25k - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 1 Emmett Park (Morning Line 6-1)

B’s

# 2 Royal Banker (GB) (ML 5-2)
# 6 Indygo Bo (ML 2-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 3 Mr. Jay D (ML 3-1)

Emmett Park won by over two lengths the last time he competed at today's claiming price, which was three starts back.  Royal Banker (GB) and Indygo Bo (ML 2-1) filled out the Trifecta behind Lucky J Lane last time out under these conditions.

RACE 5 - Clm $20k N2X - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 4 Stellar Sea (ML 8-1)
# 7 Betting McCann Can (ML 5-2)

B’s

None

C's

# 1 Paynes Prairie (ML 3-1)
# 2 Nightime Olympics (ML 7-2)
# 3 Gloria's Angelo (ML 8-1)

Note that certain editions of The Daily Racing Form's Past Performances (and perhaps others) have this contest as an N2L (non-winners of two lifetime); but this is in fact an N2X (non-winners of two lifetime other than....) as certain races (maiden, as well as claiming and starter races for $16k or less) are not considered when determining each runner's lifetime wins in accordance with the conditions.  Be aware that each entrant in this field, with the exception of Paynes Prairie, has visited the Winner's Circle multiple times.

Stellar Sea returns after an extended vacation to one turn racing, which he seems to prefer over routing.  Betting McCann Can has finished in the trifecta at this class level in each of his last two starts.

Paynes Prairie didn't show much last time out in his first start on the synthetic surface.  Paynes Prairie (as mentioned above) is also the only runner in this field to have not defeated winners.  But Paynes Prairie is dropping quite a bit in class, and Trainer Doug O'Neill has been doing quite well here with the runners that he ships in from SoCal.

Nightime Olympics was just a head behind Betting McCann Can at the wire last time out.  Gloria's Angelo may get a nice stalking trip here.

RACE 6 - Md $8k - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 3 Awesome Run (ML 3-1)

B's

# 9 Italian Fling (ML 5-2)

C's

# 4 Seattle Smoke (ML 12-1)
# 10 Blitz and a Chair (ML 10-1)

Awesome Run took the Show at this class level last time out.  Italian Fling took the Place at this class level last time out, crossing under the wire a length and a half in front of the Show horse, Blitz and a Chair.  Expect Italian Fling to be leading the field out of the gate and (at least) most of the way.  Seattle Smoke could improve with the class drop, as well as the return to one turn racing.

RACE 7 - The El Camino Real Derby (Grade 3) - Nine Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 5 Sheer Flattery (ML 7-5)

B's

None

C's

# 2 More Power to Him (ML 6-1)
# 3 Ann Arbor Eddie (ML 2-1)
# 7 Kona Dreams (ML 8-1)

Sheer Flattery, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, took the Show in the Grade 3 Robert B Lewis at Santa Anita last time out.  Sheer Flattery appears to be a standout in this field; that is, provided that he handles the switch to the synthetic surface well.

More Power to Him took the Place in the California Derby over this main track last time out.  Ann Arbor Eddie has done all his winning against state bred company, though he did take the Show in the Grade 3 Bob Hope in December at Los Alamitos.  Kona Dreams, despite being a maiden, could be the speed of the speed here; especially with the blinkers being put back on.

RACE 8 - (F) ALW N1X - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A's

# 8 Meet Miss Kitty (ML 7-2)

B's

# 5 Calm the Sea (ML 5-1)
# 6 Fervent Femme (ML 3-1)

C's

# 3 Run for Retts (ML 9-2)

Scratch # 1 Claudia Mae (ML 8-1) and # 4 Rose Among Thorns (ML 6-1)

Meet Miss Kitty has taken the Place at this class level in each of her last three starts.  Calm the Sea, shipping in from downstate for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, has yet to finish out of the Trifecta in her three race career.  Fervent Femme, also shipping in from downstate, goes first time for the barn of Trainer John Martin, who tends to do well with such.  Run for Retts took the Show behind Meet Miss Kitty last time out.

RACE 9 - Clm $4k N2L - Six Furlongs Synthetic

A’s

# 4 Star Express (ML 3-1)
# 6 My Son John (ML 7-2)
# 10 Gato Pimiento (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 1 Continental Song (ML 9-2)
# 12 H R Express (ML 10-1)
# 13 Keeping the Faith (ML 4-1)

C's

None

Scratch # 2 Time On the Run (ML 20-1) and # 9 Heroes for Ghosts (ML 20-1).  Bring in # 13 Keeping the Faith off the Also Eligible list.

Note that, unlike Race 5, this is legitimately an N2L contest, as each of the entrants in this field has visited the Winner's Circle just one time apiece.

Star Express has taken the Place at this class level in each of his last two starts.  My Son John took the Place against more expensive stock last time out while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite.  Gato Pimiento took the Place at this class level last time out; and while last time out was last May for Gato Pimiento, Trainer Steve Miyadi tends to do well with those returning from an extended vacation.

Continental Song fits well at this level, but seems to settle for too many minor awards.  H R Express could be the speed of the speed here.  Keeping the Faith goes first time for Trainer Jonathan Wong, who tends to do well with such.

OK, that's the analysis.  While this is a jackpot wager, we won't be putting all our selections on one ticket.  While we still hold out hope that this could be the luckiest day of our lives, budgetary constraints must be respected.  I think it's also safe to presume that our "A" Selections won't form the basis of a unique ticket, so we should be safe in pressing those up.  So with that, playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P6: 1 with 4,7 with 3 with 5 with 8 with 4,6,10 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.20 P6: 1,2,6 with 4,7 with 3,9 with 5 with 5,6,8 with 1,4,6,10,12,13 $43.20

A's with One C

$0.20 P6: 1 with 1,2,3 with 3 with 5 with 8 with 4,6,10 $1.80
$0.20 P6: 1 with 4,7 with 4,10 with 5 with 8 with 4,6,10 $2.40
$0.20 P6: 1 with 4,7 with 3 with 2,3,7 with 8 with 4,6,10 $3.60
$0.20 P6: 1 with 4,7 with 3 with 5 with 3 with 4,6,10 $1.20

Total: $58.20

Post Time for Race 4 is 5:14 EDT / 2:14 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
