8/18/18 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Preview

It's Pacific Classic Day at Del Mar Saturday, with the featured race of the entire meet being run.  I'll be taking a look at that contest below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 8 - (F) The Del Mar Oaks (Grade 1) - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 6 Paved (Morning Line 6-1)

B's

# 4 Ollie's Candy (ML 9-2)
# 5 Fatale Bere (Fr) (ML 6-1)
# 7 Colonia (Fr) (ML 7-2)

# 8 Californiagoldrush (ML 8-1)
# 9 Ms Bad Behavior (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Ms Peintour (ML 20-1)
# 2 Streetwithnoname (ML 20-1)

# 3 Fool's Paradise (ML 20-1)
# 10 So Hi Society (Ire) (ML 12-1)
# 11 Movie Moment (ML 20-1)
# 12 Animosity (ML 8-1)

Paved and Fatale Bere (Fr) should both improve over their respective last out efforts in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks with the cutback in distance.  Ollie's Candy misses by just a neck of being undefeated in her four race career.  Colonia (Fr) was the clear best in her North American debut for Trainer Graham Motion last time out.

Californiagoldrush has done nothing wrong in her two race career, and she has the circuit's best turf rider in Jockey Flavien Prat on her back.  Ms Bad Behavior could improve going second off the layoff.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 9 - MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Dueling (ML 4-1)

B's

# 4 No Treble (ML 8-1)
# 7 Istanbul (ML 4-1)
# 9 Seven Scents (ML 8-1)
# 10 Game Winner (ML 3-1)

C's

# 6 Asano (ML 7-2)

Scratch the Also Eligibles, # 11 You Must Chill (ML 20-1) and # 12 Mind Trick (ML 20-1)

Dueling took the Place in his debut at this class level last time out for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.  No Treble has finished in the Trifecta in both of his career starts, and could move up with the increase in real estate.  Istanbul took the Place in his debut at this class level last time out.

Seven Scents ran well in his debut last time out, once he realized that there was a race going on and he was in it.  Game Winner is a first time starter trained by Bob Baffert.  Asano is a first time starter out of the same mare that produced multiple Graded Stakes winner Wild Dude.

RACE 10 - The Pacific Classic (Grade 1) - Ten Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Accelerate (ML 8-5)

B's

None

C's

# 1 The Lieutenant (ML 6-1)
# 2 Dr. Dorr (ML 6-1)
# 7 Pavel (ML 7-2)

Scratch # 6 Beach View (ML 15-1)

No surprises here; Accelerate simply looks to be a clear standout in this field.  The Lieutenant, Dr. Dorr, and Pavel strike me as the three with the best chances to upset the Favorite; but none of those three looks talented enough to justify doubling the cost of the big ticket by including them with Accelerate in this leg.  So if the big ticket is going to be cashed instead of trashed Saturday, then Accelerate must win the Pacific Classic.

RACE 11 - OC 40k/N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Ky. Colonel (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 2 Pioneer Lad (ML 8-1)
# 4 Royal Albert Hall (GB) (ML 6-1)
# 12 Avalanche (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Fritz Johansen (ML 8-1)
# 3 Morse Code (ML 4-1)
# 5 Comma Sister (ML 20-1)
# 6 Any Questions (ML 10-1)
# 7 Incredible Luck (ML 20-1)

# 9 Alsatian (ML 20-1)
# 10 Dreams of Valor (ML 6-1)
# 11 Malibu Music (ML 15-1)

Ky. Colonel enters this contest having won three of his last four contests.  Ky. Colonel has also previously visited the Winner's Circle at this course.

Pioneer Lad took the Place at this class level two starts back.  Royal Albert Hall (GB) could move up with the cutback in distance.  Avalanche consistently contends at this class level.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

Jimbo
