8/26/18 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Preview

The Grade 3 Torrey Pines, a two turn contest for three year old fillies, is Sunday's featured race in Southern California.  I'll be taking a look at that event below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 (F) - OC 100k B - Five Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 8 Surrender Now (Morning Line 7-2)

B’s

# 3 Mongolian Shopper (ML 15-1)
# 4 Fizzy Friday (ML 8-1)
# 6 Go On Mary (ML 3-1)

C's

# 5 Algorhythmic (ML 10-1)
# 7 Symposium (GB) (ML 10-1)
# 9 Deer Valley (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 1 Desert Steel (ML 15-1) and # 2 Rubilinda (ML 5-2)

This contest is restricted to distaff runners which have either:

1) Never won $10k three times, excluding Maiden, Claiming, Starter, or State Bred races; OR
2) Which have never won four races; OR
3) Which have not won $50k since November 21, 2017; OR
4) Are willing to run with a $100k price tag on their head.

For the record, none of the runners in this field are entered to be claimed.

Surrender Now goes second off the layoff after visiting the Winner's Circle last time out; Trainer Peter Miller, who is having a typical Peter Miller Del Mar meet, tends to be successful with both of those angles.

Go On Mary and Mongolian Shopper were first and third in the Daisycutter Handicap last time out.  Fizzy Friday fits well here on class, and appears quick enough to handle the five furlong distance.  The backup "C" Selections are everyone else.

RACE 8 - OC 40k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Mo Soul (ML 15-1)

B’s

# 3 Make It a Triple (ML 5-1)
# 7 Acceptance (ML 12-1)
# 9 Distinctive B (ML 7-2)

C's

# 10 Jungle Warfare (ML 8-1)
# 11 Paddock Pick (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 5 Street Vision (ML 9-2) and # 8 More Honor (No Line)

Mo Soul returns from a nearly two year layoff; but his works over this main track suggests that Mo Soul is ready to roll.  Make It a Triple closed well last time out while taking the scenic route around this main track.  Acceptance can win today if he can replicate either of his performances from the last two times that he sprinted over a Fast dirt track.

Distinctive B fits well here on class, and has run well in the past over this main track.  Jungle Warfare could improve getting off the grass.  Paddock Pick graduated last time out, and may have finally figured out what this racing stuff is all about.

RACE 9 - (F) The Torrey Pines (Grade 3) - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Thirteen Squared (ML 3-1)

B's

# 5 Well Hello (ML 10-1)
# 9 Just Grazed Me (ML 5-2)

C's

# 3 Spring Lily (ML 8-1)
# 4 Lemoona (ML 7-2)
# 7 Aunt Lubie (ML 20-1)
# 11 True Royalty (ML 10-1)

Scratch # 8 Wicked Storm (ML 20-1)

Thirteen Squared, trained by Bob Baffert, took the Place in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks last time out.  Well Hello, who gains the services of Jockey Mike Smith, seems to have the breeding to handle the switch to two turn racing.  Just Grazed Me, trained by Phil D'Amato, has run well enough in each of her two prior starts to suggest that she can handle the class move up to open stakes company.

Spring Lily is probably better suited to sprinting; but as a daughter of Union Rags, Spring Lily deserves another shot at route racing.  Lemoona has proven on both coasts that she can handle today's distance.  Aunt Lubie was much improved last time out with the blinkers added.  True Royalty could get a nice stalking trip with the far outside draw.

RACE 10 - Md $20k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 13 Street Zombie (ML 4-1)

B's

# 7 Russell Drake (ML 15-1)
# 8 Fast Cotton (ML 6-1)
# 12 Catch Fire (ML 7-2)

C's

# 3 Supreme Giant (ML 9-2)
# 6 Flynn (ML 5-1)
# 10 Katie's Cowboy (ML 15-1)

Scratch # 1 Victor's Show (No Line) and # 14 Serve Me a Double (ML 15-1)

Street Zombie took the Show while disappointing as the Post Time Favorite at this class level last time out.  Russell Drake is a first time starter who appears well meant in this spot.  Fast Cotton could move up off the class drop.  Catch Fire took the Show at this class level last time out.

Supreme Giant, talented enough to win at this level, will be trying to prove that the twenty-seventh time is the charm.  Flynn and Katie's Cowboy are two that could move up with the class drop.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 8 with 6 with 2 with 13 $1.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3,4,6,8 with 3,6,7,9 with 2,5,9 with 7,8,12,13 $96.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 5,7,9 with 6 with 2 with 13 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 8 with 10,11 with 2 with 13 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 6 with 3,4,7,11 with 13 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 6 with 2 with 3,6,10 $1.50

Total: $103.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:05 EDT / 5:05 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
