8/19/18 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Preview

The Grade 2 Del Mar Mile is Sunday's featured race in Southern California.  I'll be looking at that event below, as well as a pair of contests for California bred non-Claiming Maidens, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - (F) [S] MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Paprika (Morning Line 7-2)
# 8 Coco Kisses (ML 4-1)
# 10 Sunrise Royale (ML 10-1)

B's

None

C's

# 1 Desired Edge (ML 3-1)
# 3 Minister'smistretss (ML 20-1)
# 7 Zillinda (ML 12-1)
# 11 I'm Sassy (ML 10-1)

Paprika has taken the Place in each of her three career races, and Trainer Leonard Powell tends to do well when taking his runners off the lawn.  Coco Kisses took the Place at this class level last time out over this main track.  Sunrise Royale disappointed as the Post Time Favorite last time out; Trainer Eric Kruljac tends to do well with such.

Desired Edge was quick early in her debut last time out, and could benefit from the reduction in real estate.  Minister'smistress appears best of the three first time starters.  Zillinda could improve with the return to the main track.  I'm Sassy took the Place at this class level last time out.

RACE 8 - The Del Mar Mile (Grade 2) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 13 Hunt (Ire) (ML 6-1)

B's

# 1 Catapult (ML 9-2)
# 4 Sharp Samurai (ML 7-2)
# 6 Bowies Hero (ML 8-1)

C's

# 10 Om (ML 12-1)
# 12 Next Shares (ML 20-1)

Hunt (Ire), winner of the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile and the Grade 2 Seabiscuit two and three starts back (respectively) may have needed that last race off the layoff.  Catapult and Sharp Samurai filled out the Quinella in the Grade 2 Eddie Read last time out.

Bowies Hero, winner of the Grade 1 Kilroe Mile back in March, fits well with the contenders here.  Om could improve going second off the layoff.  Next Shares could be the one running best late.

RACE 9 - [S] MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Anniversary Sale (ML 4-1)

B's

# 2 Twisted Plot (ML 5-2)
# 5 Policy (ML 7-2)

C's

None

Anniversary Sale and Policy are a pair of first time starters who look to be well meant here.  Twisted Plot has twice taken the Place at this class level.

RACE 10 - Clm $32k - Eight Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Secreto Primero (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 5 Dano's Dream (ML 8-1)
# 7 Rapid Red (ML 6-1)

C's

# 1 Ohio (Brz) (ML 9-2)
# 8 Vending Machine (ML 5-1)
# 9 Tiz a Billy (ML 8-1)
# 10 Cimpl Man (ML 8-1)

Scratch # 11 Upper Room (No Line) and # 13 Saxon Lord (NL)

Secreto Primero, a clear winner last time out, has finished in the Trifecta six of the seven times that he has competed over this turf course.  Dano's Dream could improve going second off the layoff.  Rapid Red, making his California debut, seems to fit well at this level.

Ohio (Brz) has been absent from the Winner's Circle for quite some time; but Ohio did take the Place against more expensive stock two starts back.  Vending Machine and Tiz a Billy are two that could move up with the class drop.  Cimpl Man, with the hood being removed, could be the one running best late.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
