8/14/13 Del Mar Late Pick Four - Preview

If today is Wednesday, then there must be a Pick Six carryover at Del Mar!  Anyway, I was able to take time away from the office today; so why not have a little middle-of-the-week fun with a Pick Four.

RACE 5 [S](F)MSW - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

# 3 Hot and Pleasing (Morning Line 10-1) is, like many in this field, making the move from turf to synthetic.  If her form holds, Hot and Pleasing's Beyer Speed Figures suggests she can win at this level.

# 4 Tiz a Kiss (ML 5-2) is trained by John Sadler and ridden by Julien Leparoux, a combination that has been doing quite well this meet.  Tiz a Kiss is going two sprints to a route, a move with which Sadler seems to do quite well.

# 6 Coconut Cream Pie (ML 7-2) is another moving off the grass to the Del Mar plastic.  Coconut Cream Pie has been in the money in five of her six career starts, taking the Place in each of the last three.  Consistent but disappointing; Coconut Cream Pie has failed as the Post Time Favorite in half her career starts.

# 7 Keldy (ML 5-1) flashed some early speed last time out, while taking the Show behind Coconut Cream Pie.    Trainer Dan Hendricks does quite well with the grass-to-synthetic move.  Jockey Gary Stevens gets the mount today.

# 8 Dow Diva (ML 15-1) took a step back last time out, as she ran with blinkers off in what appears to have been an attempt to get her to rate under Jockey Kevin Krigger.  The blinkers are back on today, and Edwin Maldonado is back in the saddle.

# 9 Sidepocket Run (ML 7-2) just missed last time with a late run; but, in addition to being on the grass, that was also with an extra half-furlong to work with.  She's shown that she can compete at this level; the question now is can she win.

RACE 6 - Clm $25k N2L - Eight Furlongs Synthetic

# 8 Unbridled Giant (ML 5-2) moves from the grass onto the polytrack; a move with which Trainer Bob Baffert does not succeed as often as one would expect.  Unbridled Giant gets some strong class relief today, dropping down from first level allowance company while running for a tag for the first time in his career.

# 9 Alydidit (ML 10-1) runs with a price tag for the first time since breaking his maiden back on New Year's Day.  Alydidit prefers to run late; which may prove to be an advantage in a field that holds a lot of speed.

RACE 7 - The Green Flash Handicap - Five Furlongs Turf

# 4 Distinctiv Passion (ML 5-2) will try to be the speed of the speed today and smoke the grass much as he did in his turf debut over this course his last time out.  Distinctiv Passion owns a prior stakes victory in the San Pedro over the Santa Anita Park dirt.

# 5 Strong Wind (ML 6-1) is another that won his turf debut over this course his last time out, earning a career best Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  Gary Stevens, who was on board for that trip, gets the ride again today.

# 7 Boat Trip (ML 7-2) has a late running style that may prove problematic if traffic gets tight on this narrow course.  Victor Espinoza gets the ride, his first time aboard this four year old colt.

# 8 Wiredfortwotwenty (ML 7-2) has shown the ability to win at this level; albeit primarily on dirt.  Look for him to be battling Distinctiv Passion on the front end in the early going.

RACE 8 (F)Md $20k - Six and a Half Furlongs Synthetic

# 2 Frannie'sspirittoo (ML 5-1) has been showing steady improvement, taking the Show at this level over this course at this distance last time out.

# 3 Janes Ship (ML 5-1) drops down from MSW company in an attempt to ship and win from New Mexico.

# 8 Dolphin Shorts (ML 5-1) makes her second career start for the Mike Mitchell; Mitchell gets 20% winners from runners making their second career start in Maiden Claiming events.

# 10 Party Bus (ML 7-2) is a first time Garrett Gomez in the saddle.  Party Bus missed by two at this level last time out, after taking the Show against more expensive the trip prior to that.

# 11 Rockin' Hard Gals (9-2) took the Place at this level her last time out, posting the best last out Beyer in this field.
