10/11/15 Santa Anita Pick Five - Preview

It's Opening Day at Santa Anita, one of the most anticipated race days of the year; and in honor of the excitement surrounding the event, we're going to ambitiously attempt to cover the full card.  The next post will spell out how we'll be playing The Late Pick Four; while this post will detail the run that we'll be taking at The Pick Five at The Great Race Place.

RACE 1 - Clm $20k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Airfoil (Morning Line 3-1)

B’s

# 5 Sacred Ovation (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 El Nino Terrible (ML 7-2)

Airfoil goes first off the claim for Trainer Jonathan Wong for a price cheaper than that for which he was purchased.  Generally such a move is a red flag, but while Airfoil has finished in the money in his last two tries against move expensive, this step down the class ladder gives him a more realistic shot at finding the Winner's Circle.

Sacred Ovation goes first off the claim for Trainer Peter Miller, who tends to do well with such.  Sacred Ovation won last time out against much less expensive stock; but that was a pretty steep drop from where Sacred Ovation had been competing, as he has hit the board recently at this class level.

El Nino Terrible drops in class and removes the blinkers, a move which Trainer Doug O'Neill has frequently been successful.  El Nino Terrible had been claimed from the O'Neill barn last time out earlier this month, but that claim was subsequently voided; so it is fair to question if El Nino Terrible's health is at one hundred percent.

RACE 2 - [S] Md $50k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 12 Little Mustard (ML 7-2)
# 13 Star Express (ML 5-1)

B's

# 5 Gambler's Wish (ML 10-1)

C's

# 7 Bobby Z (ML 6-1)
# 8 Mike's Benchmark (ML 6-1)
# 10 Da Brooklyn Kid (ML 4-1)

# 6 Salah Loves Teagan (ML 50-1) is scratched.  # 14 Roaln With Bolen (ML 15-1) does not draw in off the Also Eligible List, but Star Express will run.

Little Mustard has taken the Show at this class level in each of his prior two starts.  Star Express just missed graduating by a neck last time out, earning this field's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.

Gambler's Wish fought for the early lead against more expensive last time out against non-claiming state bred maidens before throwing in the towel.  The step back down the class ladder should bring about a return to form, and the quick turnout by Trainer Cesar Dominguez is intriguing.

Bobby Z and Da Brooklyn Kid are a pair of first time starters from sires (Marino Marini and Decarchy, respectively) whose offspring tend to do well at first asking.  Mike's Benchmark took the Show at this class level in his debut two starts back.

RACE 3 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Everqueen (ML 20-1)

B’s

# 9 Quigley's Corner (ML 8-1)

C's

# 7 Cobia (ML 8-1)
# 10 Josie the E F Five (ML 6-1)

# 8 Power Cat (No Line) is a program scratch.  # 11 Candy Boss (ML 9-2) has also been scratched.

Everqueen showed good early speed in her debut at Del Mar last time out.  Everqueen has been moved to the barn of Trainer Ron Ellis, who tends to do well with new chargers.

Quigley's Corner and Cobia are a pair of first time starters going for Trainer Tom Proctor.  Both are by sires whose progeny tends to do well at first asking.  Giving the edge to Quigley's Corner as she she seems to be the one with the better morning workouts.

Josie the E F Five looked sharp in her debut, but disappointed last time out as the Post Time Favorite.  Perhaps the change of time zone will bring about a return to form.

RACE 4 - The Daytona (Grade 3) - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 1 Richard's Boy (ML 6-1)

B's

# 7 Alert Bay (ML 5-1)

C's

# 9 Holy Lute (ML 9-2)
# 12 No Silent (ML 7-2)

# 6 Plainview (NL) is a program scratch.  # 3 Mystery Train (Arg) (ML 30-1) has also been scratched.

Richard's Boy, trained by Peter Miller, is a perfect two-for-two in his career charging down the hill, and appears to be rounding nicely into form.  Alert Bay is this field's top earner, and is a career four-for-five on the Santa Anita turf course.  But all five of those were on the flats; so it is a concern as to how Alert Bay will handle charging down the hill.

Holy Lute seems to settle for too many minor awards, and looks to be trending downward; but his back class must be respected.  No Silent won the Grade 3 Eddie D charging down the hill two starts back; but it's unlikely that a repeat of that effort would be good enough to get the job done today.

RACE 5 - MSW - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Weirdhaircut Seth (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 3 Danzing Candy (ML 7-2)
# 4 Mr. Coker (ML 8-1)
# 7 Prince of Arabia (ML 12-1)
# 9 Mad Bum (ML 12-1)
# 11 An Khe Pass (ML 10-1)

C's

# 2 Speed Check (ML 12-1)
# 5 Oppidum (ML 6-1)

# 13 Full of Hope (ML 8-1) and # 14 Eric the Trojan (ML 6-1) do not draw in off the Also Eligible List.

Weirdhaircut Seth, trained by Bob Hess Jr., moves up in company after taking the Place in his debut last time out, earning this field's best last out Beyer Speed Figure in the process.  Danzing Candy and Prince of Arabia earned respectable Beyers in their respective debuts last time out; but both come from barns that don't often see their runners move forward when making their second attempt at graduation.

Mr. Coder and An Khe Pass are a pair of first time starters trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, whose debut runners tend to do well.  Speed Check and Oppidum, both trained by Bob Baffert, seem likely to improve off their respective freshening.
