12/5/15 Los Alamitos Race Course Late Pick Four - Preview

It's the first Saturday of Los Alamitos' "Just a Few More Weeks Until Santa Anita Opens" Meet.  The Soviet Problem for California bred two year old fillies is the featured race on the card; we'll be looking at that one as we take a run at The Late Pick Four at Orange County's own Los Alamitos Race Course.

RACE 6 - Md $20k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Upbeat Tempo (Morning Line 2-1)

B's

# 6 Red Toro (ML 5-1)
# 8 Magic Moon (ML 9-5)

C's

# 7 I'm a Keeper Too (ML 10-1)

Upbeat Tempo took the Place last time out at this class level, earning a Beyer's Speed Figure in the process that towers over anything his competitors have earned in their most recent starts.  But Upbeat Tempo's last race was back in June, and runners for Trainer Ron Ellis don't fare exceptionally well when returning from an extended layoff.  So some caution is advised; though the steady workout pattern that Upbeat Tempo has been following would seem to indicate that he is ready to roll.

Red Toro drops in for his cheapest price yet, and could be the quickest out of the gate.  Magic Moon, trained by Bob Baffert, is another class dropper that has shown good early speed against more expensive stock.

The best Beyer Speed Figure that I'm a Keeper Too has earned in his two race career is a six (s-i-x; six).  But he is adding blinkers today, a move with which Trainer Jerry Fanning has had some success.  I'm a Keeper Too also had that nice bullet work over the Santa Anita main track back on November 18.  I'm a Keeper Too certainly needs to show a great deal of improvement in order to contend here; but, the more I look, the more I think that maybe, just maybe, he will.

RACE 7 - (F) Clm $16k N2X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Privileged One (ML 5-2)
# 6 Private Terrace (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 3 My Silver Cat (ML 3-1)
# 4 Cause Ur My Babe (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Runningwiththelute (ML 5-1)
# 2 Smil'n From Above (ML 6-1)

I'm seeing this contest as being pretty wide open, so all six runners are being used on our tickets in some form.

Privileged One wanted no part of the grass last time out.  We'll find out today if there was an injury involved in that poor effort, as Privileged One at 100% shouldn't have too much trouble with this field.

Private Terrace takes a major class drop from open company at today's price tag to this conditioned field.  Two starts back Private Terrace defeated open $12.5k claimers over this main track.

My Silver Cat is a lightly raced three year old with a two race winning streak.  Cause Ur My Babe has shown good early speed in her recent races upstate on the synthetic stuff; should that early speed carry over to the dirt, it could put My Silver Cat in a commanding position early.

Runningwiththelute hasn't been able to find the Winner's Circle in over a year; but her recent workouts were sharp, and Runningwiththelute has yet to finish out of the Exacta in her five career starts over this main track.  Smil'n From Above has too much talent to ignore, but settles for too many minor awards to be considered and "A" or "B" Selection.

RACE 8 - (F) The Soviet Problem $100k - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Roo's Valentine (ML 3-1)
# 7 Just Google Me (ML 5-2)

B's

None

C's

None

# 5 Patriotic Diamond (ML 9-5) has been scratched.

It took four tries for Roo's Valentine to graduate; but her Beyer's Speed Figures show steady improvement, and she could be alone on the front end in today's contest.  Just Google Me, with the scratch of Patriotic Diamond, is the only runner in this field with multiple victories, one of which was in The Barretts Debutante Stakes two starts back.

RACE 9 - Md $30k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Small Town Shuffle (ML 3-1)

B's

# 7 Five Star Jack (ML 5-2)
# 8 Swiss Missile (ML 6-1)

C's

# 3 Blue Copper (ML 6-1)
# 5 Tough Spot (ML 8-1)

# 1 Sunny Truce (No Line) is a program scratch.

Small Town Shuffle has the best last out Beyer Speed Figure in this field, and projects to be the early speed.  The concern with Small Town Shuffle is that his two best races, in each of which he took the Place at this class level, were both at six furlongs or longer.

Five Star Jack drops in for the cheapest tag of his career after showing good early speed against more expensive stock.  Swiss Missile took the Place at this class level two starts back.

Blue Copper gets a change of barn after failing as the Post Time Favorite at this class level in his debut last time out.  Tough Spot is a debut runner sired by Papa Clem, whose first time starters tend to do well.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 4 with 5,6 with 3,7 with 4 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 4,6,8 with 3,4,5,6 with 3,7 with 4,7,8 $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 7 with 5,6 with 3,7 with 4 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 4 with 1,2 with 3,7 with 4 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 4 with 5,6 with 3,7 with 3,5 $4.00

Total: $48.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 5:58 EST / 2:58 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
