8/20/17 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

So it's Sunday, the day after the Pacific Classic; and it seems best to me to stay with Del Mar to close out the weekend, rather than shifting back upstate for closing day of the Santa Rosa meet.  Good Lord willing, I'll be back to handicapping the fair circuit next weekend, chasing after the Jackpot Pick Six carryover that will (hopefully) be waiting for me in Humbolt County/Ferndale.  But that's next weekend; let's now get to this weekend's puzzle, as I take another run at The Pick Four at The Place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Classy Tune (Morning Line 7-2)
# 6 Freedom Journey (ML 8-1)

B’s

# 9 Discatsonthesquare (ML 6-1)
# 11 Plane Lucky (ML 9-2)

C's

# 4 Go On Mary (ML 12-1)
# 10 Sandy's Surprise (ML 8-1)

Scratch #2 Vai (No Line) and # 7 Little Jude (NL)

Classy Tune graduated over this main track last time, and has yet to finish out of the Trifecta in three career starts.  Freedom Journey makes her first start against open (non-state bred restricted) company; Freedom Journey seems quick enough to handle the tougher assignment.

Discatsonthesquare seems to settle for too many minor awards; but the class is certainly there, and Discatsonthesquare looks to be the one that will be running best late.  Plane Lucky may do well off the freshening.

Go On Mary could improve with the hood being added.    Sandy's Surprise could move up with the return to the main track.

RACE 8 - The Del Mar Mile (Grade 2) - Eight Furlongs Turf

A's

# 3 Bal a Bali (Brz) (ML 5-2)
# 4 Midnight Storm (ML 2-1)

B's

None

C's

# 5 Blackjackcat (ML 6-1)

Bal a Bali (Brz) and Midnight Storm appear to be the class of this field.  Look for Midnight Storm early and Bal a Bali late.  Blackjackcat appears to be in top form, and could get first run at Midnight Storm before Bal a Bali can get into top gear.

RACE 9 - MSW - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Jungle Warfare (ML 5-2)

B's

# 3 St Patrick's Day (ML 2-1)
#10 Zatter (ML 3-1)

C's

# 1 Holy Ghost (ML 20-1)
# 7 Haulin' Freight (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 9 Honeymoonz Over (ML 8-1)

Jungle Warfare, one of the few experienced runners in this field, has finished in the Trifecta at this class level in each of his two prior career starts.  St Patrick's Day and Zatter are two first time starters that are trained by Bob Baffert.  Note that St Patrick's Day is a full brother to American Pharoah, which pretty much guarantees that he will be overbet in the Win Pool, despite the fact that his renowned older sibling did not win his debut.

Holy Ghost, sired by Ghostzapper, appears to have been working well for this, his first time out.  Haulin' Freight, trained by Doug O'Neill, had a nice gate work back on the 6th.

RACE 10 - (F) ALW N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A's

# 8 Arethusa (GB) (ML 3-1)

B's

# 5 Domestic Village (ML 10-1)
# 6 La Force (Ger) (ML 12-1)
# 9 Heavenly Thought (ML 5-1)
# 10 Pistol Packin Rose (ML 15-1)

C's

# 3 Ok Doll (ML 7-2)
# 4 Bombilate (ML 5-1)
# 11 Lucy De (ML 6-1)

Arethusa (GB) appears to be rounding into top form, and could move forward with the change in barn.  Domestic Village graduated by daylight last time out, and also performed well in her only prior try on this turf course.  La Force (Ger) is getting some class relief here.

Heavenly Thought could do well off the freshening.  Pistol Packin Rose could be quick enough to overcome the outside post.  Lucy De, Bombilate, and Ok Doll were third, fourth, and fifth (respectively) at this class level last time out, over this turf course.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 5,6 with 3,4 with 6 with 8 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 5,6,9,11 with 3,4 with 3,6,10 with 5,6,8,9,10 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4,10 with 3,4 with 6 with 8 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 5,6 with 5 with 6 with 8 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 5,6 with 3,4 with 1,7 with 8 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 5,6 with 3,4 with 6 with 3,4,11 $6.00

Total: $77.00

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:03 EDT / 5:03 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
