1/13/18 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

"By seeing the seed of failure in every success, we remain humble. By seeing seed of success in every failure we remain hopeful." - Paul Meyer

Saturday kicks off a three day holiday weekend in the United States, and Good Lord willing I'll be partaking of the action at Santa Anita each of those three days.  Saturday's featured race is the Grade 2 La Canada; I'll be taking a look at that event below, as I take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - Clm $50k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 3 Zuri Chop (Fr) (Morning Line 4-1)
# 7 Moonlight Drive (Ity) (ML 7-2)
# 13 Rocket Fuel (ML 12-1)

B’s

# 2 Doc Curlin (ML 6-1)
# 11 Clever Royal (ML 6-1)

C's

# 4 The Critical Way (ML 20-1)
# 5 Reign On (GB) (ML 12-1)

# 6 Conquest Daddyo (ML 15-1)
# 8 Secreto Primero (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 10 Elwood J (ML 15-1).  Bring in # 13 Rocket Fuel (ML 12-1) off the Also Eligible list.

Zuri Chop (Fr) took the Place sprinting on the Del Mar turf against more expensive stock last time out.  Zuri Chop was victorious the last time that he charged down the Santa Anita hill.

Moonlight Drive (Ity), Graded Stakes placed on the grass, is being priced to sell, and looks to be classiest here.  Clever Royal and Rocket Fuel could be quickest here, and early speed has been playing well of late on this configuration.  Doc Curlin has always run well down the hill.

The Critical Way tries the turf for the first time; and while Trainer Mick Ruis hasn't been successful of late putting his runners get on the lawn, The Critical Way has the breeding to suggest that he should run well here.  Reign On (GB) and Secreto Primero filled out the Exacta sprinting at the $40 Claiming level recently.  Conquest Daddyo could move up with the cutback in distance.

RACE 7 - Clm $6.25k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 10 Lambo Luxx (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 9 Fueled by Bourbon (ML 7-2)

C's

# 1 Pat the Bear (ML 8-1)
# 7 Private Prospect (ML 4-1)

Lambo Luxx comes off a win against more expensive last time out; and while it may seem odd for a runner to drop off a victory, the purse money between the two contests is not much different ($16k vs $14k total).  Lambo Luxx has gotten his picture taken after three of his last six races, and Trainer Jack Carava tends to do well when placing his last out winners.

Fueled by Bourbon may improve with the increase in real estate.  Pat the Bear has disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of his last two starts.  Private Prospect returns on less than a week's rest after having run in that contest for trainers with few California based horses last Sunday.

RACE 8 - (F) The La Canada (Grade 2) - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Mopotism (ML 7-2)

B's

# 2 Majestic Heat (ML 9-5)

C's

# 3 Mended (ML 4-1)

Mopotism took the Show in the Grade 1 La Brea behind Unique Bella last time.  Majestic Heat has won a pair of stakes since moving to the main track, including the Grade 2 Bayokoa.  Mended is probably in over her head; but it's not easy to toss a horse with ten straight wins.

RACE 9 - Clm $25k - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 8 Coastline (ML 3-1)
# 9 General Ike (ML 5-1)

B’s

# 1 Airlite (ML 10-1)
# 6 Theycallhimthekid (ML 4-1)
# 10 Johnny Reb (ML 5-1)
# 12 Particleacelerator (ML 15-1)

C's

# 2 Zapana's Game (ML 30-1)
# 3 Zeppo (ML 50-1)

# 5 Red Carpet Cat (ML 10-1)
# 7 Bourque (ML 6-1)
# 11 Rough Passage (ML 30-1)

Scratch # 4 Highly Acclaimed (ML 15-1)

Coastline gets some significant class relief after disappointing last time out as the Post Time Favorite.  General Ike took the Place against more expensive stock the only prior time that he charged down the hill.

Airlite fits well at this class level.  Theycallhimthekid projects to be an early pace presence.  Johnny Reb goes first off the claim for Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer after just missing the Winner's Circle by a nose last time out.  Particleacelerator could improve with the return to Santa Anita.

The "C" Selections are everyone else, including the two nighttime Los Alamitos runners; because this one looks to me to be very wide open.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing my tickets in modified Crist fashion, I get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3,7,13 with 10 with 4 with 8,9 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,7,11,13 with 9,10 with 2,4 with 1,6,8,9,10,12 $60.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4,5,6,8 with 10 with 4 with 8,9 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 3,7,13 with 1,7 with 4 with 8,9 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 3,7,13 with 10 with 3 with 8,9 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 3,7,13 with 10 with 4 with 2,3,5,7,11 $7.50

Total: $86.50

Post Time for Race 6 is 6:01 EST / 3:01 PST.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
