6/25/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

They've got a pair of Grade 1 stakes running at Santa Anita Saturday; indeed, they make up the final Double on the card.  So we'll be taking a look at those two contests below as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - [S] OC 20k/C - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 8 Family Code (Morning Line 3-1)

B’s

# 1 Hye I'm Jack (ML 4-1)
# 7 Taman Guard (ML 9-5)

C's

# 4 Devils Informer (ML 9-2)

Family Code took the Show against more expensive two starts back.  All three of Family Code's career Wins have come against non-state restricted company.

Hye I'm Jack could be the one running best late.  Devils Informer and Taman Guard look to be the quickest in this field.  Devils Informer may have the early edge with the addition of blinkers; but the question is will Devils Informer be able to hold on late.

RACE 7 - MSW - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Westfest (ML 5-2)

B's

# 7 Giant Expectations (ML 9-5)
# 9 Curlin Road (ML 12-1)

C's

# 3 Thermopylae (ML 12-1)
# 5 Tiz No Bluff (ML 6-1)

Westfest has disappointed as the Post Time Favorite in each of his three prior career starts; but Westfest did run well enough in each of those contests to finish in the Trifecta.  This will be Westfest's first try around two turns.

Giant Expectations took the Place at this class level last time out.  Curlin Road has been showing steady improvement in each of his races.  Curlin Road could make another move forward with the return to dirt despite his prior failures on the surface, as Trainer Steve Knapp tends to do well when his runners get off the grass.

Thermopylae is a first time starter that shows a nice, steady workout pattern leading up to this contest.  Tiz No Bluff lost all chance in his debut last time out when he hopped at the start.  A better break could put Tiz No Bluff in the mix today, though it would have been nice to have seen at least one gate work on the tab.

RACE 8 - The Triple Bend (Grade 1) - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Lord Nelson (ML 3-1)
# 6 Subtle Indian (ML 3-1)

B's

# 2 Kobe's Back (ML 5-2)

C's

# 7 Home Run Kitten (ML 12-1)

Lord Nelson looked ultra-sharp last time out, his first race of 2016; if he holds that form, then he should win here.  Subtle Indian could have things all to himself in the early going even without having to run the opening quarter as if his tail was on fire, as he did last time out.  Kobe's Back should be the one running best late.  Home Run Kitten is on the wrong surface; but Home Run Kitten's works on the main track warrant him a spot on the backup ticket.

RACE 9 - The Gold Cup (Grade 1) - Ten Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Bal a Bali (Brz) (ML 9-2)
# 2 Second Summer (ML 4-1)
# 3 Hard Aces (ML 6-1)

B's

# 4 Lieutenant Colonel (ML 8-1)
# 7 Melatonin (ML 7-2)

C's

# 5 Win the Space (ML 20-1)
# 6 Hoppertunity (ML 3-1)
# 8 Imperative (ML 6-1)

Everybody goes on the ticket in this one.  That's because in my opinion the two best horses in this field (Hoppertunity and Imperative) settle for far too many minor awards, while the entrants with the best form coming into this contest (Lieutenant Colonel and Melatonin) stand an excellent chance of running each other into the ground before they reach the finish line.  So with that, I think this race has an excellent chance of turning into chaos.

Bal a Bali (Brz) is trying dirt for the first time.  Bal a Bali's works show that he can handle the surface, and he has the stamina to still be running well when they hit the wire.  Second Summer enters this contest having won his last three, and his breeding suggests that Second Summer should have no problems with the added distance.  Hard Aces took this event last year, and appears to be rounding into top form.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4:  8 with 2 with 4,6 with 1,2,3 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,7,8 with 2,7,9 with 2,4,6 with 1,2,3,4,7 $67.50

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4 with 2 with 4,6 with 1,2,3 $3.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 3,5 with 4,6 with 1,2,3 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 8 with 2 with 7 with 1,2,3 $1.50
$0.50 P4: 8 with 2 with 4,6 with 5,6,8 $3.00

Total: $87.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:05 EDT / 4:05 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
