1/4/15 Santa Anita Pick Five - Preview

Saturday's chaos at Santa Anita has resulted in carryovers in the Pick Five, Pick Six, and Super High Five pools.  Since Pick Five Carryovers are rarely seen in SoCal, I thought I'd switch from my usual Late Pick Four play and take a shot at Sunday's early races.

RACE 1 - Clm $25k - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Oligarch (Morning Line 4-1)
# 5 When We Met (ML 5-2)
# 6 Hadfunlastnight (ML 3-1)

C’s

# 2 McKenzies Way (ML 6-1)

Oligarch just missed by a neck at this class level at today's distance last time out.  When We Met misses by just a head of entering this contest with a six race winning streak.  Yes, all those were cheaper than what he will be facing today; but When We Met has defeated more expensive in the past.

Hadfunlastnight clearly prefers synthetic to real dirt; however, the most recent Beyers earned by Hadfunlastnight over this main track would probably win today if repeated.  In addition, the class drop must be respected.

McKenzies Way has been camera shy, as he hasn't gotten his picture taken after a race in over a year; but his Beyer Speed Figures fit well in this field; and Jockey Martin Pedroza, whose last mount on McKenzies Way was McKenzies Way's last victory, will be on board today.

RACE 2 - MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Uptown Rythem (ML 3-1)
# 8 War Destiny (ML 5-2)

C’s

# 1 Logan's Moon (ML 2-1)

Uptown Rythem is a first time starter sired by Speightstown, whose progeny win approximately 15% of the time at first asking.  War Destiny took the Show in his debut last time out.  Note also that War Destiny's trainer, John Sadler, wins at a 20% clip with maidens making their second career start.

Logan's Moon took the Place at this level last time out, and therefore must be respected, even though Trainer Peter Eurton's chargers don't often move forward in their second start off an extended layoff.

RACE 3 - (F) OC 80k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Olivia's Greatdane (ML 5-2)
# 6 All Star Bub (ML 2-1)

C’s

None

Olivia's Greatdane has shown the ability to win from off the pace, a skill that should prove quite useful today.  Besides, you know Trainer Bob Baffert is going to start winning again soon; might as well get the good odds while you can.

All Star Bub needed to drop into the Maiden Claiming ranks in order to graduate, but he did so by earning the best career Beyer Speed Figure in this field.  In addition, All Star Bob switches over to the barn of Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who gets 30% winners from the runners that he's handling for the first time.

RACE 4 - MSW - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Stuffed Animal (ML 5-1)
# 7 Metaboss (ML 5-2)

C’s

None

# 14 Harmonic (ML 6-1) does not draw in from the Also Eligible list, and gets to stay in the barn.

Metaboss took the Place at this level last time out, with Stuffed Animal taking the Show right behind him.  Those two look to be far ahead of the rest of the field; we'll see if that's still true after the race is run.

RACE 5 - [S] OC 20k/N1X - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Kill Shot (ML 7-5)
# 7 Memphis (ML 5-2)

C’s

# 3 Willie B Awesome (ML 4-1)
# 4 He's On His Toes (ML 4-1)
# 5 Warren's Nicholas (ML 6-1)

Kill Shot and Memphis both took the Place at this class level in each of their respective last races.  Expect both to go straight for the lead as soon as the gates open.

Willie B Awesome has been firing bullets in his Los Al workouts in anticipation of this return to action after a layoff of over a year.  He's On His Toes won in his only prior try a fast dirt track, two starts back.  Warren's Nicholas has finished in the money in each of this two prior races over this main track.  In addition, Warren's Nicholas has a late running style that should suit him well in this contest full of speed.

OK, that's the analysis.  No need to double up on the "All A Entries", as there'll be plenty of money in pool.  So with that, and playing our tickets via the Crist method we get:

All A Entries

$0.50 P5: 3,5,6 with 5,8 with 4,6 with 3,7 with 6,7 $24.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P5: 2 with 5,8 with 4,6 with 3,7 with 6,7 $8.00
$0.50 P5: 3,5,6 with 1 with 4,6 with 3,7 with 6,7 $12.00
$0.50 P5: 3,5,6 with 5,8 with 4,6 with 3,7 with 3,4,5 $36.00

Total: $80.00

Post Time for Race 1 is 3:30 EDT / 12:30 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
