1/8/15 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

Found myself with more free time than I expected today; so let's see if we can't have some mid-week fun with Thursday's Late Pick Four at Santa Anita.

RACE 5 - [S] MSW - Six and a Half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 3 Badasmywifeletsmeb (Morning Line 12-1)
# 8 Forest Chatter (ML 9-5)

C’s

# 1 Hazardous Dreams (ML 5-1)
# 6 The Custodian (ML 6-1)
# 7 Tizapalooza (ML 4-1)

# 5 Silver Spirit (ML 10-1) has been scratched; # 11 Inflationary (ML 12-1) does not draw in from the Also Eligibles.

Badasmywifeletsmeb has failed to graduate in a dozen tries; hardly the type of runner that you want as an "A" selection.  But only two of those tries where charging down the hill, and only one of those two at this class level; and he took the Show in that one.  If Forest Chatter has difficulties navigating the hill, Badasmywifeletsmeb has at least as good a chance as many others here, at what may be a very inflated price.

Forest Chatter took the Place last time out sprinting on the Del Mar grass against open non-claiming maidens.  The move back to a state bred only event marks a significant class drop for Forest Chatter, but there's no guarantees that he'll enjoy charging down the hill.

Hazardous Dreams, The Custodian, and Tizapalooza have had one prior attempt each at graduating by charging down the hill, and each had a respectable showing in their respective try.

RACE 6 - (F) Clm $12.5k N2L - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A's

# 2 Amina Perfect (ML 6-1)
# 5 Bow Tie Belle (ML 8-5)

C's

# 1 Real Bright Boots (ML 5-1)
# 7 Spoiledandentitled (ML 8-1)
# 8 Here's Bella (ML 4-1)

# 6 Sixy Eddie (ML 12-1) has been scratched.

Amina Perfect took the Place at this class level last time out.  Bow Tie Belle, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, gets some significant class relief here in this one, as well as trying real dirt in competition for the first time.

Real Bright Boots projects to be speed on the rail, which is always a danger on a fast dirt track.  Toss the last effort and the time that she tried stakes company, and Real Bright Boots has been a consistent performer regardless of surface.  The concern here is does Real Bright Boots need a race after the layoff of more than half a year.

Spoiledandentitled gets some class relief as well as going for a new barn.  Here's Bella graduated her last time out; Trainer Brian Koriner hits about 20% of the time when placing his last out winners.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 62k/C - Six and a half Furlongs Downhill Turf

A’s

# 6 Baruta (Brz) (ML 3-1)
# 7 Dutchessa (GB) (ML 8-1)
# 11 Black Bird Rock (ML 6-1)

C’s

# 3 Royal Temptress (Ire) (ML 7-2)
# 8 Sudden Sunday (ML 8-1)

# 1 Blake's Magic (ML 9-2) and # 10 Amnesia (Ire) have been scratched.

Baruta (Brz) moves up the class ladder after winning at the N1X level last time out.  Baruta has taken the Place in each of her three prior attempts charging down the hill, and her good early speed in routes on the flat lawns is what you like to see in those moving to the downhill course.

Dutchessa (GB) took the Place at this approximate level last time out, albeit on the synthetic at Golden Gate.  Dutchessa did put in a good showing in her one prior attempt charging down the hill.  Black Bird Rock has proven to be competitive at this class level.

Royal Temptress (Ire) hasn't shown the early speed on the flat lawns that you like to see in hill chargers, but if it all falls apart up front, Royal Temptress could be the one picking up the pieces late.  Sudden Sunday performed reasonably well against state bred stakes competition in her two prior times navigating this turf course.

RACE 8 - Md $20k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Preordained (ML 5-1)
# 10 Militant (ML 4-1)

C’s

# 2 Slewpy Again (ML 6-1)
# 4 Rahy's Shadow (ML 12-1)
# 8 Undergroundrailroad (ML 5-1)

# 7 Go Jeremiah (ML 7-2) has been scratched.

Preordained and Militant each took the Place in their respective last out races, both at this class level.  Slewpy Again returns after a sixteen month hiatus; the sharp drop in class after such a long vacation means don't expect much, but a return to his juvenile form could get the job done today.

Rahy's Shadow is a first time starter by a sire (Old Topper) whose progeny win approximately 15% of the time at first asking.  Undergroundrailroad showed good early speed last time out in his debut.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets via the Crist method, we get:

Jimbo
