7/16/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

It's opening weekend for The Summer Meet at Del Mar.  Sing it Bing!

Saturday's featured race is the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon.  We'll be taking a look at that contest below as we take a run at The Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - OC 75k/N1X - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 It's The Ice (GB) (Morning Line 7-2)
# 12 Lucky Bryan (ML 9-2)

B’s

# 5 Bombard (ML 5-1)

C's

# 6 Oscar Dominguez (Ire) (ML 20-1)
# 9 Chewy Round Town (Ire) (ML 20-1)
# 10 Lauren's Ladd (ML 8-1)

Scratch the two on the Also Eligible List: # 13 Free Rose (ML 10-1) and # 14 Mishegas (ML 15-1)

It's The Ice (GB) showed good early speed when graduating in his final race in Great Britain; such runners tend to do well when competing in the US.  And, sure enough, It's The Ice has finished in the Trifecta in each of his North American contests.

Lucky Bryan has been within a length and a half of the winner at the wire in each of his last two races, both listed stakes.  Bombard graduated last time out by beating Mr. Roary to the wire; Mr. Roary went on to win The Rainbow Stakes.

Oscar Dominguez (Ire) could be the one running best late.  Chewy Round Town (Ire) makes his North American and turf debuts after having shown good early speed in his contests on the synthetics overseas.  Lauren's Ladd seems to be rounding into top form; but the addition of blinkers is a concern, as it seems that Lauren's Ladd's improvement coincided with the removal of the hood.

RACE 8 - (F) MSW - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Go Baby Run (ML 4-1)

B's

# 1 Champagne Room (ML 8-1)
# 3 Noted and Quoted (ML 3-1)
# 8 Holy Mosey (ML 8-1)
# 9 Lovely Linda (ML 15-1)

C's

None

These are juveniles, and Holy Mosey is the only experienced runner in the field, having twice competed at this class level.  Holy Mosey took the Show in her debut.

Go Baby Run was sired by Smart Strike and is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.  Champagne Room had a sharp five furlong workout on the 7th.  Noted and Quoted is trained by Bob Baffert.  Lovely Linda had a sharp gate work on the 11th.

RACE 9 - (F) The Yellow Ribbon (Grade 2) - Eight and a Half Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 2 Nancy From Nairobi (GB) (ML 3-1)

B's

# 4 Prize Exhibit (GB) (ML 12-1)
# 9 Keri Belle (ML 8-1)

C's

# 6 Finest City (ML 7-2)
# 8 She's Not Here (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 5 Majestic Heat (ML 4-1)

Nancy From Nairobi (GB) won the Grade 2 Royal Heroine two starts back over several that will be competing against her again in this contest.  Prize Exhibit (GB) is a Graded Stakes winner over this turf course.  Keri Belle has been showing an improving form in her races this year.

Finest City flopped in her only prior try on the grass; but that was charging down the hill at Santa Anita, so this daughter of City Zip may take to a flat turf course.  She's Not Here is the defending champ, having won this contest last year.

RACE 10 - Md $20k - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Woodstock Memory (ML 8-1)
# 12 Alaskan Cruise (ML 5-1)

B's

None

C's

# 2 Chanito (ML 20-1)
# 9 Olimpo's Scat Cat (ML 12-1)

Scratch # 1 Hoosier Road (ML 9-2)

Woodstock Memory drops in class and cuts back in distance for his second career start.  Alaskan Cruise drops in for the lowest tag in what will be his seventh career start.  Alaskan Cruise has finished in the Trifecta against more expensive stock.

Chanito, who has taken the Show at this class level two and three starts back, is out to prove that the twenty-fifth time is the charm.  Olimpio's Scat Cat ships in from Arizona, where he twice took the Show.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:
