7/4/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

"I have never had a feeling politically that did not spring from the sentiments embodied in the Declaration of Independence.  I have often pondered over the dangers which were incurred by the men who assembled here, and framed and adopted that Declaration of Independence.  I have pondered over the toils that were endured by the officers and soldiers of the army who achieved that Independence.  I have often inquired of myself what great principle or idea it was that kept this Confederacy so long together.  It was not the mere matter of the separation of the Colonies from the motherland; but that sentiment in the Declaration of Independence which gave liberty, not alone to the people of this country, but, I hope, to the world, for all future time.  It was that which gave promise that in due time the weight would be lifted from the shoulders of all men.  This is the sentiment embodied in that Declaration of Independence." - President Abraham Lincoln

Happy Independence Day, America!  Hopefully everyone has been enjoying this extended holiday weekend, and hopefully that enjoyment will be extended throughout today.  For me, a large part of that enjoyment will be playing the card at Santa Anita; a card which has a final four selection of races that includes a stakes for California bred runners, as well as a contest featuring debuting juvenile fillies.  So with that let's get to it, as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - (F) MSW - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Auntjenn (Morning Line 6-1)
# 10 Light of the Moon (ML 3-1)

B's

# 1 Lady Sophia (ML 20-1)

C's

# 3 Adorable (ML 5-2)

All entrants in this contest are juvenile fillies making their first ever start; so what do you look for?  For me, I look primarily for sires whose progeny tend to win at first asking; trainers that tend to be successful with first out runners; and a workout pattern devoid of significant gaps.  That's the criteria that guided the above four selections.

Auntjenn, trained by Kristin Mulhall, was sired by Uncle Mo.  Light of the Moon, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, was sired by Malibu Moon.  Light of the Moon's morning workouts at Los Alamitos have been especially notable.

Lady Sophia, trained by Victor Garcia, was sired by Eskendereya.  Adorable, trained by Bob Baffert, was sired by Smart Strike.  Adorable was a borderline choice between a "B" and "C" Selection, as the gap between the May 16 and June 6 work may be a cause for concern that she may not yet be in peak condition.  Or it may just mean that the clockers missed one.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Revenue Virginius (ML 2-1)

B’s

# 6 Be a Lady (ML 5-2)

C's

# 1 Discatsonthesquare (ML 7-2)
# 7 Instant Drama (ML 10-1)

Revenue Virginius was victorious at this class level three starts back.  Be a Lady missed victory by less than a length at this class level last time out.

Discatsonthesquare has proven to be competitive at this class level, but also seems to have become content with minor awards.  Instant Drama may be rounding into form.

RACE 8 - [S] The Thor's Echo $100k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Raised a Secret (ML 2-1)
# 6 Mrazek (ML 4-1)

B's

# 3 Forest Chatter (ML 5- 2)
# 5 Magic Mark (ML 7-2)

C's

# 2 Love My Bud (ML 8-1)
# 4 Nardo (ML 6-1)

Raised a Secret and Mrazek both have state bred restricted stakes wins on their respective resumes, and both have recently hit the board against Graded Stakes competition.  Forest Chatter moves over from the downhill turf course to the main track; judging by his recent workouts, Forest Chatter should have no problem with the surface switch.

Magic Mark won the state bred restricted Bertrando last time out.  Nardo defeated open (non-state bred restricted company) last time out.  Love My Bud is on the ticket because everyone else in this contest is.

RACE 9 - [S] Md $50k - Six Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 9 Worldwide (ML 8-5)

B's

# 5 Junior Gilliam (ML 6-1)
# 6 Elkhorn Crown (ML 4-1)

C's

# 1 Woodie B Awesome (ML 12-1)
# 2 Martini Up (ML 20-1)
# 3 Atomic Action (ML 8-1)

Worldwide has yet to finish out of the Trifecta in six career starts; the concern, then, is why hasn't Worldwide won yet?  Junior Gilliam showed nothing in his debut, but that was last October, on synthetic, against open, non-claiming maidens; so perhaps it's best to just toss that effort.  Elkhorn Crown showed good early speed in his debut last time out while taking the Place behind a next out winner.

Woodie B Awesome drops in from the non-claiming state bred maiden ranks for the first time.  Martini Up and Atomic Action are first time starters by sires whose progeny tend to do well at first asking.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 5,10 with 4 with 1,6 with 9 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 1,5,10 with 4,6 with 1,3,5,6 with 5,6,9 $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 3 with 4 with 1,6 with 9 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 5,10 with 1,7 with 1,6 with 9 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 5,10 with 4 with 2,4 with 9 $2.00
$0.50 P4: 5,10 with 4 with 1,6 with 1,2,3 $6.00

Total: $53.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:02 EDT / 4:02 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
