7/17/16 Del Mar Pick Four - Preview

The Sandy Blue and The Eddie Read are a pair of nine furlong turf stakes being featured at Del Mar on Sunday; and they've both managed to make their way onto the final four races on the card.  So with that let's get to it, as we take a run at The Pick Four at the place Where The Turf Meets The Surf.

RACE 7 - (F) The Sandy Blue $75k - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 3 Cheekaboo (ML 5-2)

B's

None

C's

# 2 Riri (ML 7-2)
# 9 Nine Point Nine (ML 6-1)

Scratch # 11 Kay Kay (No Line)

We had no part of Cheekaboo when she lit up the Santa Anita tote board last time out by winning the Grade 2 Honeymoon at 23-1.  How much of a class drop it is from that contest into this one is uncertain at this point; but it seems pretty clear that a repeat of that effort gets Cheekaboo back into the Winner's Circle today.

Riri makes her first start of 2016 for Trainer Phil D'Amato, who tends to do well when sending out runners coming off an extended vacation.  Nine Point Nine looks to be the speed of this field, and could steal it on the front end.

RACE 8 - MSW - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 1 Law Abidin Citizen (ML 3-1)
# 4 The All Button (ML 7-2)
# 8 Chasing Aces (ML 5-2)

B's

None

C's

# 7 Blame Joe (ML 12-1)

Law Abidin Citizen, The All Button, and Chasing Aces are all making their second career start after having finished in the Trifecta in their respective debuts.  Blame Joe is a first time starter that has fallen into a tough field for one making their debut; but progeny of his sire, Blame, tend to do well at first asking, so maybe Blame Joe can pull the upset today.

RACE 9 - The Eddie Read (Grade 2) - Nine Furlongs Turf

A’s

# 5 Midnight Storm (ML 5-2)
# 6 Finnegans Wake (ML 6-1)

B's

# 1 Ashleyluvssugar (ML 6-1)
# 2 Flamboyant (Fr) (ML 9-2)
# 3 Texas Ryano (ML 15-1)
# 4 Si Sage (Fr) (ML 12-1)
# 7 Ohio (Brz) (ML 8-1)
# 8 Patentar (Fr) (ML 20-1)
# 9 Bolo (ML 3-1)

C's

None

Midnight Storm early; Finnegans Wake late.  The "B's" are everyone else.  God bless you if you know who's going to win this race, because I sure don't.

RACE 10 - Clm $16k N2L - Six and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 3 Fans On the Run (ML 7-2)

B’s

# 1 Motoring Around (ML 15-1)
# 4 Kristi's Copilot (ML 3-1)
# 11 Que Christoso (ML 5-1)
# 12 It's Just Bob (ML 6-1)

C's

# 6 Ballado's Banker (Arg) (ML 12-1)
# 7 Steel Plank (ML 15-1)

Scratch the Also Eligibles: # 13 What We Doing (ML 30-1) and # 14 Redneck Crazy (ML 10-1)

Fans On the Run adds the hood while taking a huge class drop, as Fans On the Run is not only going for a cheaper price tag, but is also going from open to conditioned claimers.

Motoring Around could improve with the cut back in distance.  Kristi's Copilot should improve with the return to dirt.  Que Chistoseo and It's Just Bob are taking big class drops, though I would say that their appearances against more expensive were just overly optimistic placings by their respective connections.

Ballado's Banker (Arg) showed good early speed last time out, which was last August.  Note that Trainer Mike Puype has had some success bringing runners back from an extended layoff.  Steel Plank may move forward with the change in surface.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: 3 with 1,4,8 with 5,6 with 3 $6.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 3 with 1,4,8 with ALL with 1,3,4,11,12 $67.50

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 2,9 with 1,4,8 with 5,6 with 3 $6.00
$0.50 P4: 3 with 7 with 5,6 with 3 $1.00
$0.50 P4: 3 with 1,4,8 with 5,6 with 6,7 $6.00

Total: $86.50

Post Time for Race 7 is 8:03 EDT / 5:03 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
