7/9/16 Santa Anita Late Pick Four - Preview

We've made it to the final weekend of Santa Anita's "These Dates Used To Belong To Hollywood Park" Meet, and we've come to a card where the focus is on the juveniles.  Saturday's featured events are The Landaluce and The Santa Anita Juvenile, the latter of which we will be looking at below as we take another run at The Late Pick Four at The Great Race Place.

RACE 6 - Hcp 16000s - Five Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 6 Navy Hymn (Morning Line 4-5)

B’s

# 2 Wildfire Kid (ML 10-1)
# 3 Too Fast to Pass (ML 5-2)

C's

# 4 Justonemorething (ML 15-1)
# 7 Sacred Ovation (ML 7-2)

Note for future reference that there are no career Win restrictions on this contest.  Any runner that has started for a claiming price of $16k or less since March 1, 2015 (a little over sixteen months ago) is eligible to run in this race.

Navy Hymn is the type of horse that I may look back on later and wonder why I didn't just use him as a single.  Navy Hymn defeated much classier competition last time out by nearly five lengths.  Navy Hymn has yet to finish out of the Exacta in eight career starts, and he is a perfect five-for-five in his career on the Santa Anita main track.  So why isn't Navy Hymn a single here?

Well, of the three loses that Navy Hymn has experienced in his career, two were today's distance.  In addition, this will be Navy Hymn's first start against older horses.  Now it's quite possible that once this race is over it will look rather silly that we tried to beat this runner; but right now I think it's worth spreading a bit in this leg, especially since Navy Hymn is almost certain to go off at a ridiculously low price.

Wildfire Kid took the Place behind Too Fast to Pass last time out, and could improve with the cutback in distance.  Too Fast to Pass won by over five lengths last time out, and today goes first off the claim for Trainer Peter Miller, who wins with about a third of such.

Justonemorething could be the one running best late.  Sacred Ovation should run well off the freshening, and Trainer Kristin Mulhall tends to do well when sending out last out winners.

RACE 7 - (F) OC 40k/N1X - Eight Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 4 Savannah Sky (ML 5-2)

B’s

# 1 Big Break (ML 4-1)

C's

# 3 Minster'sadventure (ML 3-1)
# 5 Melanistic (ML 5-1)

Savannah Sky has finished in the Trifecta in each of his last three starts at this class level, with a series of steadily improving performances.  Big Break took the Show against more expensive two starts back, and could be speed on the rail.  Minster'sadventure and Melanistic were just a nose apart at the wire last time out while taking the Place and Show, respectively, at this class level.

RACE 8 - The Santa Anita Juvenile $125k - Five and a Half Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 2 Green With Eddie (ML 3-1)
# 3 Secret House (ML 3-1)

B's

# 1 Rebel War (ML 12-1)
# 4 Silver Assault (ML 5-2)
# 5 Right Hand Man (ML 7-2)
# 6 California Diamond (ML 4-1)

C's

None

Each of these runners has exactly one career start; and, with the exception of Rebel War, each of these runners won their respective debuts by daylight.  Trainer Doug O'Neill has expressed a great deal of confidence in his two runners (Green With Eddie and Secret House) so they're our "A" Selections.  The "B's" are the rest of the field, because my opinion is that anyone can win this race.

RACE 9 - Clm $25k N2L - Seven Furlongs Dirt

A’s

# 5 Chasintheaces (ML 2-1)
# 7 Gramsson (ML 5-1)

B’s

None

C's

# 1 Unbridled Rocket (ML 8-1)
# 6 Woody's Folly (ML 4-1)

Chasintheaces took the Show at this class level last time out.  Gramsson could be cycling up to a big number.  Unbridled Rocket took the Show against unconditioned $25k claimers two and three starts back; perhaps he can return to that level.  Woody's Folly gets some class relief, as well as a turn back in distance.

OK, that's the analysis.  Playing our tickets in Crist fashion, we get:

All A Entries

$1.00 P4: : 6 with 4 with 2,3 with 5,7 $4.00

All A Entries with All B Entries

$0.50 P4: 2,3,6 with 1,4 with ALL with 5,7 $36.00

A's with One C

$0.50 P4: 4,7 with 4 with 2,3 with 5,7 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 3,5 with 2,3 with 5,7 $4.00
$0.50 P4: 6 with 4 with 2,3 with 1,6 $2.00

Total: $50.00

Post Time for Race 6 is 7:04 EDT / 4:04 PDT.  Good luck to all.

Peace and Love,

Jimbo
